As a country, Pakistan is mostly dependent on fossil fuels for fulfilling its energy demand, which is expensive, as well as being environmentally unfriendly. It is high time that the country decides to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy resources like geothermal, wind, solar, etc., to cater for global warming issues. Pakistan has a lot of potential geothermal sites, as the location of Pakistan lies on several fault lines and hot springs, thus making it very easy to extract the temperature from deep inside the earth and harness it for Geothermal Energy. Also, a sound knowledge of ground temperature is essential to use geothermal energy, which is obtained by drilling boreholes and putting in sensors. However it becomes a very expensive and labor intensive procedure. Therefore, to avoid the huge cost for drilling boreholes, particularly for ground temperature analysis, a numerical approach has been considered for determining ground temperature. Furthermore, correlation charts between air and ground temperatures have been developed, as there were no proper studies on the ground temperature of Pakistan. Then, with the help of a boreholes drilled in the National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan, the actual ground and numerically calculated temperatures have been compared. The results show a temperature error margin in the range between 0.27% for higher depths of about 5.6 m and 7.3% near the surface of about 2.7 m. Thus, it is shown that the proposed method is easy to implement and better than large scale testing methods for the depths at which geothermal energy is extracted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Earthquakes are one among the highly dangerous geological hazards. The damage from earthquakes is greatly influenced by the local geological conditions. The history of Pakistan is full of severe earthquakes that caused the mass destruction at national scale. Major earthquake-affected areas in Pakistan are mainly concentrated in the north and western sections of the country. Site response analysis is an initial step towards seismic risk assessment. The present study aims at local site effects by acquiring data along 105 sites of Rawalpindi-Islamabad, the twin cities of federal capital of Pakistan, by applying H/ V spectral ratio method. Out of the data acquired for 105 sites, data for 88 sites were considered reliable after observing reliability conditions determined by SESAME guidelines devised in 2004. Fundamental frequency f of soft sediments, amplitude A of corresponding H/ V spectral ratios, thickness of soft sediments residing on the bedrock and soil vulnerability index K over 88 reliable data sites within the study area were estimated and analysed. The results show that the fundamental frequency of the sediments reflects variation and lies within a wide range between 0.6 and 14.4 Hz. Similarly, amplification factor A up to 5.5 was observed at a site. Overburden thickness of soft sediments H also indicates high variation and has been calculated in the range of 1.7-316.5 m. As far as K is concerned, it is also highly variable and is lying in the range of 0.30-62.7. These results will help in designing a policy to mitigate the impact of seismic hazard in the study area. Introduction: Two patients with jaundice reported to the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad from Shakrial, Rawalpindi in April 2017. An outbreak investigation team was formulated to assess the disease magnitude, risk factors and control measures. Methodology: A case-control study was conducted in 360 houses in May 2017. The case definition was: onset of acute jaundice with any symptom including fever, right upper-quadrant pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, nausea and vomiting among Shakrial residents from March 10 - May 19, 2017. Four age and gender matched controls were selected for each case. Blood samples were sent to the NIH for laboratory confirmation. Frequencies, attack rates (AR), odd ratios, and logistic regression were computed at 95% confidence interval and p < 0.05. Results: A total of 25 cases (23 new) were identified with mean age 8 years and male to female ratio 1.5:1. Overall AR was 1.39% and the most severely affected age-group was 5-10 years (AR of 3.92%). Multivariate analysis revealed that raw vegetable consumption, lack of awareness and poor handwashing practices had significant association with disease spread. All blood samples were positive for hepatitis A, and no resident was previously vaccinated. Lack of awareness of disease spread among the community was the most probable reason for the outbreak. There were no new cases during follow up until May 30, 2017. Conclusions: Healthcare departments should implement public policies towards the management of hepatitis A in Pakistan.
