The aquaculture industry is considered a key sector for the supply of high quality, nutritious food. However, growth of the aquaculture sector has been slow, particularly in Europe, and this is amongst others linked to concerns about environmental impacts of this industry. Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (IMTA) has been identified as an important technology to sustainably improve freshwater fish production. In IMTA, economically valuable extractive species feed on waste produced by other species, remediating wastewater, and minimising the environmental impact of aquaculture. This study presents quantitative information on the nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency of a duckweed-based, pilot, semi-commercial IMTA system. Duckweed species are free-floating freshwater species belonging to the family of Lemnaceae. The aim of this study was to test the potential of duckweed-based IMTA under realistic environmental conditions. Three different approaches were used to assess remediation capacity; 1) assessment of water quality pre and post treatment with duckweed showed that the system can remove 0.78 and 0.38 T y−1 of Total Nitrogen (TN) and Total Phosphorus (TP), respectively 2) based on nitrogen and phosphorus content of newly grown duckweed biomass, it was shown that 1.71 and 0.22 T y−1 of TN and TP can be removed, respectively 3) extrapolation based on laboratory established nitrogen and phosphorus uptake rates determined that 0.88 and 0.08 T y−1 of TN and TP can be removed by the system. There is substantive agreement between the three assessments, and the study confirms that duckweed can maintain good quality water in an IMTA system, while yielding high protein content (21.84 ± 2.45%) biomass. The quantitative data on nitrogen and phosphorus removal inform the design of further IMTA systems, and especially create a scientific basis to determine the balance between aquaculture and extractive species. Purpose of the study: To increase public awareness about mouth cancer, the Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH) hosted an awareness day and free mouth check-up in September 2010. The messages of information, self-examination and risk management, and the importance of early detection, were available to all attendees. The role of general dental and medical practitioners in examination of the mouth was stressed. Material and methods: A questionnaire regarding knowledge about the causes of and risk factors for mouth cancer, and a clinical check-up, were completed. Results: A total of 1,661 individuals (675 male, 986 female) were examined. The mean age was 59.6 years. Just over one-third (36.5%) of those examined required no action, and slightly less (30%) were advised to return to their general dental or medical practitioner (GDP/GMP). Some 21% were advised about self-examination of the mouth, and 8% about smoking cessation. Of the remainder, 52 people (3.5%) were sent for a second opinion. Of these, 30 individuals were referred for further investigation, including biopsy in 27 cases. Following biopsy, five individuals were diagnosed with carcinoma in situ or carcinoma. Conclusions: The diagnosis of five people with mouth cancers, who may not otherwise have been identified for early treatment, highlights the need for regular mouth examination. It is inappropriate that such an exercise would remain the preserve of the dental teaching hospitals, and it is vital that all dentists take on the responsibility for regular mouth checks for all of their patients. More should be done to encourage those identified as high risk to visit their dentist. The article discusses the development of mouth, head and neck cancer awareness in Ireland and the results of the Mouth Cancer Awareness Day (MCAD) 2011 held in September 21. It cites the importance of prevention and early diagnosis in controlling mouth, head and neck cancer. The MCAD is a joint initiative by the Irish Cancer Society, the Dental Health Foundation, the Cork and Dublin Dental Schools and the Irish Dental Association (IDA).

Background: The 'ABC for life' programme was designed to facilitate the wider dissemination of basic life support (BLS) skills and knowledge in the population. A previous study demonstrated that using this programme 10-12-year olds are capable of performing and retaining these vital skills when taught by medical students. There are approximately 25,000 year 7 school children in 900 primary schools in Northern Ireland. By using a pyramidal teaching approach involving medical students and teachers, there is the potential to train BLS to all of these children each year., Aims: To assess the effectiveness of a programme of CPR instruction using a three-tier training model in which medical students instruct primary school teachers who then teach school children., Settings: School children and teachers in the Western Education and Library Board in Northern Ireland., Methods: A course of instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)--the 'ABC for life' programme--specifically designed to teach 10-12-year-old children basic life support skills. Medical students taught teachers from the Western Education and Library Board area of Northern Ireland how to teach basic life support skills to year 7 pupils in their schools. Pupils were given a 22-point questionnaire to assess knowledge of basic life support immediately before and after a teacher led training session., Results: Children instructed in cardiopulmonary resuscitation using this three-tier training had a significantly improved score following training (57.2% and 77.7%, respectively, p<0.001)., Conclusion: This study demonstrates that primary school teachers, previously trained by medical students, can teach BLS effectively to 10-12-year-old children using the 'ABC for life' programme.

The autopsy rate has been declining worldwide for decades. This study determined the overall and differential autopsy rates for the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast for the years 1997-1999 inclusive. Trends were examined by comparison with previously collected data for the years 1990, 1991 and 1993. Reasons for the decline in autopsy rates as perceived by hospital clinicians were assessed by means of a questionnaire. Over the last decade, there has been a steady decline in the overall autopsy rate from 30.4% in 1990 to 18.4% in 1999. This is due to a decrease in the hospital autopsy rate from 21.6% in 1990 to 7.9% in 1999. The coroner's autopsy rate has remained comparatively unchanged at around 11%. The decline in the overall and hospital autopsy rates involves all of the principal bedholding directorates, but is most dramatic in medicine, surgery and intensive care, where hospital autopsy rates are currently 7% or less. The main reasons for this decline as perceived by clinicians are difficulty in obtaining consent from relatives and advances in modern diagnostic techniques. The findings of this enquiry are in keeping with trends elsewhere, despite repeated studies which clearly demonstrate the continuing value of the autopsy in clinical practice. Recent publicity concerning the retention of organs can only have an adverse affect. Pathologists and clinicians who value the autopsy must become actively engaged in both public and medical education. Renewed emphasis must be placed on the importance of the autopsy in teaching, training and clinically relevant research, and as a means of medical audit.
