Ousting former Iraqi President Saddam Hussain removed one important player who was always jockeying for leadership, and working against Israel, Kuwait and Iran. Ironically, three weeks later, Iraq's interim government ordered Al Jazeera's Baghdad office closed for a month, charging that by showing images of hostages in Iraq, the TV network incites violence and hatred. The National City Christian Church, located near Washington D.C. held an interfaith service of prayer and remembrance on May 27, 2004 honoring those who have died in the conflict in Iraq. Bob Edgar, general secretary of the National Council of Churches of Christ, called for a new commitment from attendees to end the war in Iraq.

Nearly 800 pairs of combat boots tagged with the name, state of origin, age, and rank of every fallen U.S. soldier stretched across Upper Senate Park, in the shadows of the Capitol dome, on May 25 and 27, 2004. Alongside the boots, a 24-foot wall listed the thousands of names, and the ages, of Iraqi civilians who have been killed in the U.S.-led war on their country. San Diego resident Fernando Suarez del Solar, lost his only son, a 20-year-old Marine named Jesus, when he stepped on a U.S. cluster bomb on March 27, 2003, while fighting in Iraq. He wanted to learn all he could about the war, and attended anti-war protests and met other military families. Ivan Medina, a 22-year-old former U.S. soldier who served 11 months in Iraq, lost his twin brother, Irving, in Baghdad on November 14, 2003.

On the eve of war, U.S. President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair told their people that Iraq's weapons of mass destruction posed a real and present danger to Americans, their British cousins, indeed the entire planet. Some 1,500 American investigators are now searching Iraq for evidence to back up those controversial claims. Anyone who watches TV knows that, in investigating a crime, it first is necessary to secure the crime scene. One has to wonder why U.S. forces never bothered to do this, or to guard from looters the Tuwaitha Nuclear Research Center, or six other nuclear sites in Iraq.

Kathy Kelly, co-founder of Voices in the Wilderness, has helped organize over 70 delegations to Iraq as part of a campaign of civil disobedience.

The article reports that Rotary International District #7620, in partnership with Physicians for Peace, has launched a prosthetics project in Basra, Iraq as part of their "Friendship in the Arab World" initiative. Tax-deductible donations will be used to help send medical staff, equipment and supplies to Iraq and, even more importantly, help train Iraqi nationals. There are nearly 5,000 known amputees in the Basra area alone, and the number grows monthly. Many are children who have been injured by landmines or other consequences of war. This worthy project also is collecting used prosthetics devices, which are also tax-deductible.

Antoon asks Iraqis of various ethnic and political backgrounds, as well as the U.S. soldiers, what they think about the post-war situation and the complex relationship between the U.S. and Iraq.

A March 14, 2004 memorial procession began with a ceremony at Camden Friends Meeting House at Dover, Delaware, then marched to the gates of Dover Air Force Base, where caskets containing the war dead arrive. The following day, mourners gathered at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington D.C., where many of the wounded are treated. The procession ended at the White House, with the delivery of a memorial message and a call for an end to the war on Iraq. Marchers said they wanted to honor the fallen men and women-Americans, Iraqis, and increasing numbers of people from other countries who have been killed or wounded. Many of them chided U.S. President George W. Bush's administration, which refuses to honor the dead soldiers by receiving their caskets or acknowledging the terrible cost in lives.

Iraqis will find it hard to forget the second U.S.-led war on their country in little more than a decade. While the debris and scorched wreckage eventually will be cleaned up and rebuilt, the lives lost and national treasures and government records looted are irreplaceable. It was inevitable that the U.S., with its weapons and resources, would win a war against Iraq. Unless Iraq had used weapons of mass destruction or chemical weapons, which it appears it did not even possess, the war was a rout before it even began. Why, then, did the U.S. use cluster bombs in population centers? These 1,000 pound, 14-foot-long weapons explode and release hundreds of smaller bomblets the size of soda cans, which can then scatter over an area the size of a football field. Each bomblet can tear through a quarter-inch of steel. They are designed to saturate a large area with explosives and flying shards of metal. So much for precision. Sometimes cluster bombs land intact and blow up later. Most of the deaths and injuries Iraqis suffered were caused by cluster bomb shrapnel.

A counter-demonstration numbering fewer than 200 gathered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C. on April 27, 2003. Republican Representative of Indiana, Steve King, called nearby anti-war demonstrators. Iraqi immigrant Shalal Al Jubri described the Iraqi government's massacre of 152 people from his village. Former Republican Representative of California, Robert K. Dornan, said Saddam Hussain's followers had cut off the legs of 444 Iraqi soldiers who had tried to surrender during the first Iraq war. Other speakers recited the many crimes Saddam Hussain committed against his people and predicted Iraqis one day will appreciate this war to liberate them from his evil regime.
