Dolomitization and related anhydrite cementation can complicate the characterization of carbonate reservoirs. Both processes have affected the Permo-Triassic Upper Dalan – Kangan carbonates, the main reservoir at the South Pars gasfield, offshore Iran. The carbonates were deposited in a shallow-marine ramp or epeiric platform and, according to previous studies, underwent intense near-surface diagenesis and minor burial modification. Detailed petrographical and geochemical analyses indicate that dolomitization and anhydrite precipitation can be explained in terms of the sabkha/seepage-reflux models. The early dolomites then re-equilibrated or re-crystallized in a shallow burial setting. Evaluation of poroperm values in different reservoir intervals indicates that replacive dolomitization in the absence of anhydrite precipitation or with only patchy anhydrite has enhanced the reservoir quality. Where anhydrite cement is pervasive and has plugged the rock fabric, poroperm values are significantly decreased. As emphasized in previous studies and confirmed here, dolomitization and anhydrite cementation, together with original facies type, are the major factors controlling reservoir quality in the Dalan – Kangan carbonates at South Pars. When associated with minor anhydrite cementation, replacive dolomitization has enhanced reservoir quality by increasing permeability. However, porosity in fabric-retentive dolomite was apparently inherited from the precursor rock and therefore reflects the original depositional environment. Low-temperature dolomitization is commonly fabric-selective and partially fabric-retentive. Whole rock stable isotope thermometry indicates that fabric-destructive dolomites in the reservoir rocks formed at temperatures above 22°C, whereas fabric-retentive dolomites and associated anhydrites formed in surface and near-surface conditions. Fabric-destructive dolomite or dolomite neomorphism post-date fabric-retentive dolomite and continued to form in deep burial conditions (∼1400m). The Caspian Sea, as a land-locked basin, is more sensitive to environmental changes compared with world oceans. The Pliocene to the present sediments of the Caspian coast recorded repeated seawater fluctuations. The South Caspian coast surrounding the main water body of the sea (i.e. South Caspian sub-basin), has recorded basin-wide environmental changes, rather than local oscillations. An outcrop of the Holocene sediments in the South Caspian coast, Iran, provided new palaeoenvironmental records for this region. Field study (along with mollusc content, shell mineralogy, oxygen and carbon isotopic composition of the shells) was used to constrain the main changes in the Caspian environment during the Late Holocene. This molluscan-rich lagoonal sediment is located around four metres above the present Caspian sea-level and distanced 2 km from the present shoreline. Oxygen and carbon stable isotope data retrieved from diagenetically unaltered shells show mean values of -2.87‰ and -1.64‰, respectively. General trend of δ18O and δ13C are similar through the sedimentary sequence, except for minor changes in the mid-section. These well-preserved isotopic records demonstrate cyclic variations along the outcrop that reflect past environmental changes. The paleotempreture curve calculated by δ18O shows that the range of seawater temperature variations was similar to last century's instrumental records. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The central Guilan coast along the Iranian Caspian coastline is characterized by sandy beaches and the development of spit–lagoon complexes, which are prone to preserve past sea-level fluctuations. The morphology of three spit–lagoon complexes along the central Guilan coast was studied using ground penetrating radar (GPR) and sediment sequences to understand the effects of past sea-level changes on spit–lagoon development. The results showed the prominent role of coastal setting in conditioning the development of spit–lagoon formation in response to sea-level change. When the Caspian Sea experienced a highstand in the Little Ice Age, the coast of central Guilan recorded fluctuations in sedimentation which are reflected, for example, by river avulsion and beach ridge formation depending on physical setting. In the western half of the central Guilan, eastward longshore currents and strong wave action on a W–E coastline coupled with sea-level changes shaped the Anzali spit–lagoon complex; while in the eastern part of the studied area river avulsion and changing the coastline orientation are responsible for development of the Amirkola and Kiashahr spit–lagoon complexes under the same sea-level fluctuations. Although sea-level change has a major role in spit–lagoon development, an increase in the frequency of storms, changes in sediment supply due to more precipitation, and river avulsion are other players in spit–lagoon development in the central Guilan during the Little Ice Age and more recent times. Abstract: Two internationally important Ramsar lagoons on the south coast of the Caspian Sea (CS) have been studied by palynology on short sediment cores for palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic investigations. The sites lie within a small area of very high precipitation in a region that is otherwise dry. Vegetation surveys and geomorphological investigations have been used to provide a background to a multidisciplinary interpretation of the two sequences covering the last four centuries. In the small lagoon of Amirkola, the dense alder forested wetland has been briefly disturbed by fire, followed by the expansion of rice paddies from AD1720 to 1800. On the contrary, the terrestrial vegetation reflecting the diversity of the Hyrcanian vegetation around the lagoon of Anzali remained fairly complacent over time. The dinocyst and non-pollen palynomorph assemblages, revealing changes that have occurred in water salinity and water levels, indicate a high stand during the late Little Ice Age (LIA), from AD <1620 to 1800–1830. In Amirkola, the lagoon spit remained intact over time, whereas in Anzali it broke into barrier islands during the late LIA, which merged into a spit during the subsequent sea level drop. A high population density and infrastructure prevented renewed breaking up of the spit when sea level reached its maximum (AD1995). Similar to other sites in the region around the southern CS, these two lagoonal investigations indicate that the LIA had a higher sea level as a result of more rainfall in the drainage basin of the CS. This study is aimed at assessing the ecological risk of heavy metals (HMs) in the International Hamoun wetland, southeastern Iran. Twenty sediment samples were collected from the wetland surface for geochemical analysis of 23 HMs. The inverse distance weighting (IDW) technique was used to map the HMs. The single and multi-element pollution indicators and PER index (PERI) were respectively used to determine the contamination intensity and PER level. The principal components analysis (PCA) was performed to identify the HM source. The mean concentration of cesium (Cs: 5.2 µg/g), selenium (Se: 0.9 µg/g), and tellurium (Te: 0.2 µg/g) was higher than their mean values in the Earth's crust. The enrichment factor (EF) showed the Hamoun was high to extremely enriched by Te, As, and Se. The geo-accumulation index (GeoI) revealed the highest level of contamination caused by As, barium (Ba), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), cuprum (Cu), ferrum (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), rubidium(Rb), titanium (Ti), vanadium(V), yttrium (Y), and zinc (Zn) in most study sites. The sediment contamination factor in more than 55% of the sediment samples was between 8 and 16, indicating very high contamination intensity in the studied wetland. The PER values were between 80 and 160 in more than 60% of the sediment samples, suggesting a considerable risk in the wetland. The PCA showed both anthropogenic and crustal activities were effective in increasing the concentration of HMs in the wetland. The largest ecological risk was due to arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd).
