Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of first-time pregnant women regarding hearing loss in infants, and to identify the key factors that influence their perceptions. Methods: After validating and ensuring the reliability of a well-structured questionnaire consisting of 15 items, it was distributed to a total of 400 pregnant women who were experiencing their first pregnancies. Utilizing a cluster sampling method, participants were selected from both public hospitals and private gynecologist offices across diverse geographic regions in Tehran, Iran. Participants were asked to respond on a three-point scale (No, Not Sure, Yes). The results were analyzed using both descriptive and analytic statistics. Results: The translated questionnaire exhibited suitable face validity, test–retest reliability, and internal consistency. Findings revealed the highest maternal knowledge for "newborns can be born with hearing loss "(77.5%) and the lowest knowledge score was observed for "delayed birth cry can lead to hearing loss" (23.8%). Regarding attitudes, 72.5% of mothers scored above the mean of 5.65 out of 6, indicating a preference for early diagnosis and intervention. Several factors, such as education level and the mother's city of residence, showed a significant correlation with certain knowledge and attitude-related questions. Notably, individuals receiving care at public hospitals showed greater knowledge compared to those visiting private clinics. Conclusions for Practice: Mothers play a crucial role in child health and need to have a thorough understanding of pediatric diseases in order to make informed decisions. One particular condition that mothers should be well-informed about is hearing loss, as it has a significant impact on language development. However, this study reveals that there are gaps in maternal knowledge when it comes to the specific causes of hearing loss. Significance: Multiple studies have been conducted so far, particularly among mothers that have examined individuals' attitudes and knowledge about newborn hearing loss and the factors that contribute to it. However, this study looks into Iranian mothers' attitudes regarding screening and hearing aids, as well as their awareness about hearing loss and its risk factors, and it compares these findings to earlier research. Background: Ovarian granulosa cells (GCs) are essential for follicular development. Ovarian advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) accumulation is related to GCs dysfunction. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) illustrates therapeutic capabilities for infertility-related disorders. Therefore, this study assessed the effects of ALA on AGEs-induced GCs hormonal dysfunction. Methods: The study was conducted from October 2021 to September 2022 at the Department of Medical Genetics, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. Isolated GCs (n=50) were divided into control, human glycated albumin (HGA), HGA+ALA, and ALA treatments. Steroidogenic enzymes and AGE receptor (RAGE) genes were assessed by qRT-PCR. Steroid hormones and RAGE protein were evaluated using ELISA and Western blotting. Data were analyzed using GraphPad Prism software (ver. 9), and P<0.05 was considered significant. Results: Our findings showed that HGA treatment significantly (P=0.0001) increased RAGE (by 140.66%), STAR (by 117.65%), 3β-HSD (by 165.68%), and 17β-HSD (by 122.15%) expression, while it decreased CYP19A1 (by 68.37%) expression. RAGE protein level (by 267.10%) was also increased in HGA-treated GCs. A significant decrease in estradiol (by 59.66%) and a slight and sharp elevation in progesterone (by 30.40%) and total testosterone (by 158.24%) levels was also observed. ALA treatment ameliorated the HGA-induced changes in steroidogenic enzyme mRNA levels (P=0.001) and steroid hormone secretion (P=0.010). Conclusion: This work shows that ALA therapy likely corrects hormonal dysfunctions caused by AGEs in luteinized GCs. This effect is probably achieved by decreased RAGE expression. Clinical research is needed to understand how AGEs and ALA interact in the ovary, which might lead to a more targeted ovarian dysfunction therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Hand hygiene adherence is highly important in clinical practice and is influenced by various factors. Aims: This study investigated the effect of multimodal intervention on nursing students' adherence to hand hygiene in clinical practice. Methods: Internship nursing students were randomized into control (n = 20) and intervention (n = 26) groups. Adherence to hand hygiene was measured by self-report questionnaire and by observation. The intervention group received multimodal interventions for 1 week. Findings: Results showed significant effects of multimodal intervention on adherence to hand hygiene in "before contact with the patient," "before and after contact with the patient" situations, and at the beginning of medication administration, catheterization, vital sign measurement, and blood sugar testing. Conclusion: The multimodal intervention improved adherence to hand hygiene in the intervention group. Given the importance of hand hygiene adherence by nursing students in all situations, designing and implementing context-based multimodal interventions are recommended as part of nursing students' educational programs. Background and aim: Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. Several studies have investigated the effects of dietary patterns on prostate cancer risk, but this topic is still a matter of debate. This study aimed to examine the association between dietary patterns and prostate cancer risk. Methods: In a case-control study, 60 newly diagnosed prostate cancer cases and 60 hospital-based controls were selected from two main hospitals of Shiraz, Iran. Data on dietary intakes, anthropometric features, and demographic characteristics were collected. To determine the dietary patterns factor analysis, and to estimate the odds ratios (ORs), multivariable logistic regression was performed. Results: Two major dietary patterns were identified: Western dietary (WD) pattern and Mediterranean dietary (MD) pattern. After adjusting for potential confounders, men who had higher scores for WD pattern (above the median) were more likely to have prostate cancer (OR = 5.15; 95% CI (1.44-18.47); P = 0.01) compared with men who had lower scores. A nonsignificant inverse association was found for MD pattern (OR = 0.62; 95% CI (0.22-1.77); P = 0.37). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that WD pattern may increase the risk of prostate cancer and the beneficial effects of MD pattern on prostate cancer risk need further research. Background and Aim: This paper reports on the predictors of high school students' oral health behaviors (OHBs) based on the Pender's Health Promotion Model (HPM) in an attempt to identify effective factors that may be addressed through intervention efforts. Materials and Methods: A multistage cluster sample of 403 high school students were recruited from 8 high schools in Marivan County, Iran. The study was conducted between April and July, 2010. Appropriate instruments were used to measure the relevant variables. The statistical analysis of the data included bivariate correlations, t-test, one-way ANOVA and linear regression. Results: All HPM variables (perceived self-efficacy, perceived benefits and barriers, activityrelated affects, interpersonal and situational influences and commitment to a plan of OHBs) were significantly related to OHBs among the respondents (p < 0.01), and a negative association was found between OHBs and perceived barriers (p < 0.01). All HPM variables were statistically significant predictors of OHBs and accounted for 42.2% of the variance. Conclusion: Promotion of interpersonal influences and the students' perceived self-efficacy and also commitment to a plan of action should be priorities of any program aimed at promoting OHBs among students. School health care providers should suggest strategies to overcome the barriers of performing OHBs, rather than noting the benefits of these behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cephalometry or skull measurement are used in pediatrics, forensic medicine, plastic surgery, oral surgery and diagnostic comprehension between patient and normal populations. Cephalic index is an important parameter for detecting the race and sex of an individual whose identity is unknown. The most important of cephalometric dimension are height and width of head which determine cephalic index. On the basis of cephalic index four head shapes are determined in international categories, that including dolichocephal, brachycephal, mesocephal and hyperbrachycephal. With noticing the lack of documented research about 14-18 years old girls and boys in this area, this study was planned for determining normal range of head shapes in 867girls and 960 boys in the age of 14-18 in fars-Iran. In regards of cephalic index our results showed that dominent type of head in girls was brachycephalic with 42.5% and in boys was hyperbrachycephalic with 34.3%, rare type of head shape in girls was dolicocephalic with 4.80% and in boys was 7.5%. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare disorder that affects both upper and lower motor neurons. Mutations in Alsin Rho Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factor (ALS2) correlates with three similar but distinctive syndromes, including the juvenile form of ALS. An Iranian Kurdish family was involved in this study and all members were evaluated with relevant clinical guidelines. Whole exome sequencing and sanger sequencing were applied to all family members to undermine the possible genetic factors. A substitution c. 2110 C>T (p. Arg704X) identified in the ALS2 gene. Bioinformatics analysis indicated the mutation is located in the well-conserved and functional domain of the protein. This study recognized a novel mutation in the ALS2 gene in a proband with the juvenile form of ALS. To our knowledge, this is the first identified ALS2 mutation among the Iranian population.

Purpose: Primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) (OMIM#231,300) can be caused by pathogenic sequence variations in CYP1B1, LTBP2, MYOC and PXDN genes. The purpose of this study was to investigate mutations in the CYP1B1 gene in families affected with primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) using linkage analysis and Sanger sequencing., Methods: A total number of four families with nine affected PCG patients during six months were included in this study. The mutations were identified by homozygosity mapping to find the linked loci and then direct sequencing of all coding exons, the exon-intron boundaries and the 5' untranslated region of CYP1B1 using genomic DNA obtained from affected family members and their parents. Moreover, bioinformatic tools were applied to study mutation effect on protein structure and function., Results: A total of four mutations were identified, and three of these were novel. Two were missense mutations: One was truncating mutation, and the other was an in-frame deletion. Mutations in CYP1B1 could fully explain the PCG phenotype in all of the patients. Also, the bioinformatic study of the mutations showed the structure of the protein is affected, and it is well conserved among similar species., Conclusion: In this study, we identified 4 CYP1B1 mutations, 3 of which were novel. In silico analysis of identified mutations confirmed their molecular pathogenicity. Purpose: Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS: OMIM 209,900) is a rare ciliopathic human genetic disorder that affects many parts of the body systems. BBS is a genetically heterogeneous disorder with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations which makes its diagnosis and management more challenging. RetNet reports 18 genes that cause BBS and each of genes has had several known mutations. Genetic studies suggesting that serologically defined colon cancer antigen 8 (SDCCAG8) gene mutations are a major cause of BBS., Materials and Methods: In this section, we investigated the consanguineous Iranian family members with BBS. Whole-exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing, were performed to screen and confirm the suspicious pathogenic mutations. The identified mutation was investigated using bioinformatics tools to predict the effect of the mutation on protein structure., Results: Sequential analysis identified a novel splice site mutation c.1221 + 2 T > A in the SDCCAG8 gene in BBS patients. Structure-based approaches have predicted significant structural alterations in SDCCAG8 protein., Conclusions: This study was conducted to show the aberrant alternative splicing as one of the single splicing mutations identified can cause BBS by affecting the function of SDCCAG8 protein.

The WOMAC Osteoarthritis Index and Lequesne Algofunctional Index have not been translated and validated for Iranian patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee or hip. The aim of this study was to validate the Persian form of WOMAC OA Index and Lequesne Algofunctional Index and to assess their test-retest reliability and convergent validity. Forward/backward translations and consensus panels were conducted to obtain the Persian versions of WOMAC OA Index and Lequesne Algofunctional Index. A non-probability sample of 116 patients with knee/hip osteoarthritis was asked to complete the WOMAC OA Index and Lequesne Algofunctional Index as well as Medical Outcomes Study-20-Item Short Form (SF-20) questionnaires, a visual analogue scales (VAS) of pain and demographic information form. Internal consistency (using Cronbach's alpha) and convergent validity (by examining the Pearson's correlation coefficients) were evaluated to determine the psychometric properties of the questionnaires. In order to evaluate test-retest reliability, 20 randomly selected patients completed the questionnaires, on a second occasion, 7-10 days later. Cronbach's alpha coefficients and intraclass correlation coefficients for the WOMAC OA Index and Algofunctional Index subscales ranged from 0.63 to 0.94 and from 0.53 to 0.96, respectively. Statistically significant correlations were found between WOMAC OA Index, Algofunctional Index and SF-20 subscales and VAS for pain. The Persian version of WOMAC demonstrated a more acceptable validity, internal consistency and reliability compared with the Lequesne Algofunctional Index. However, both indices are valid and reliable instruments for evaluating the OA severity of knee/hip in Iran.
