Background: Frontline nurse managers influence the implementation of evidence-based practices (EBP); however, there is a need for valid and reliable instruments to measure their leadership behaviors for EBP implementation in acute care settings., Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Implementation Leadership Scale (ILS) in acute care settings using two unique nurse samples., Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of ILS data obtained through two distinct multisite cross-sectional studies. Sample 1 included 200 registered nurses from one large Californian health system. Sample 2 was 284 registered nurses from seven Midwest and Northeast U.S. hospitals. Two separate studies by different research teams collected responses using written and electronic questionnaires. We analyzed each sample independently. Descriptive statistics described individual item, total, and subscale scores. We analyzed validity using confirmatory factor analysis and within-unit agreement (awg). We evaluated factorial invariance using multigroup confirmatory factor analyses and evaluating change in chi-square and comparative fit index values. We evaluated reliability using Cronbach's alpha., Results: Confirmatory factor analyses in both samples provided strong support for first- and second-order factor structure of the ILS. The factor structure did not differ between the two samples. Across both samples, internal consistency reliability was strong (Cronbach's alpha: 0.91-0.98), as was within-unit agreement (awg: 0.70-0.80)., Linking Evidence to Action: Frontline manager implementation leadership is a critical contextual factor influencing EBP implementation. This study provides strong evidence supporting the validity and reliability of the ILS to measure implementation leadership behaviors of nursing frontline managers in acute care. Internet technology holds potential as a valuable educational tool, but several challenges continue to impede its use. This article describes the use of a web-based course to educate staff nurses regarding evidence-based acute pain management practices for older adults. Specific areas highlighted include: the steps involved in creating the web-based course; the materials and support required to disseminate the course; the challenges encountered in promoting use of the course; and responses to and evaluations of the course. The authors' experiences provide knowledge to assist other healthcare professionals on the use of a web-based course to educate staff nurses.

Implementing evidence-based practice is a complex but valued process that requires support for nurses to make it a reality in care delivery. To address this, an Evidence-Based Practice Staff Nurse Internship was developed at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in the United States., Program Overview: The objective of this internship is to promote use of evidence by staff nurses to improve patient outcomes. Through a competitive application process, six nurses are accepted in each cohort. The program provides didactic content and dedicated work time on topics interns select (e.g., family pet visitation, sedation management, bowel sounds assessment, guided imagery, family transition to pediatric floor). Interns receive paid clinical release time for participating., Roles and Responsibilities: Teams include the staff nurse, the nurse manager, and an advanced practice nurse. Responsibilities for each step are assigned to the person with the appropriate expertise., Evaluation: Interns report understanding the process, appreciate the opportunity for professional growth, and report their objectives are being met. Participants evaluated the program very positively and also provided recommendations for revision (e.g., revising class content). The program resulted in improved quality of care such as increased patient and family satisfaction, decreased length of stay, and cost savings., Implications: Programs that support practitioners through the evidence-based practice process are needed for use in a variety of settings internationally. This unique program supports staff nurses in making evidence-based practice a reality for their work and patients and might be transferable across settings.

The UIHC Department of Nursing is nationally known for its work on use of research to improve patient care. This reputation is attributable to staff members who continue to question "how can we improve practice?" or "what does the latest evidence tell us about this patient problem?" and to administrators who support, value, and reward EBP. The revisions made in the original Iowa Model are based on suggestions from staff at UIHC and other practitioners across the country who have implemented the model. We value their feedback and have set forth this revised model for evaluation and adoption by others.

Delivery of quality patient care and management of patient outcomes is critical to the success of academic medical centers in the ever-changing health care market. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) promotes quality care through the provision of organizational structures and processes that are described in this article. In addition, quality of care and outcomes management are described by members in various roles within the UIHC health care system. It is the authors' belief that understanding quality from these various perspectives helps UIHC work across departments to achieve excellence in patient care.
