The association of socio-economic-demographic (SED; e.g., income-related) factors with depression is widely confirmed in the literature. We conducted a hospital-based case-control study of 160 patients with psychiatrist-diagnosed clinical depression. The control group comprised 160 participants recruited from local communities. We used a questionnaire to collect SED data from all participants. We replaced missing values using multiple imputation analyses and further analyzed the pooled data of five imputations. We also recorded the results from the original analysis and each imputation. Univariate analyses showed income was associated with depression. Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that, among all SED variables, high income (odds ratio = 2.088 [95% confidence interval = 1.178-3.700]; p = 0.012), middle-level (completed junior or senior high school) education (1.688 [1.042-2.734]; p = 0.033) and cohabitating with four or more family members (1.632 [1.025-2.597]; p = 0.039) were significant predictors for the case group. We conclude that cash income is a determinant of depression in hospital outpatients in Indonesia. This study suggests health policy implications toward better hospital access and service for people with depression in middle- or low-income households, and recommends considering high income as correlated with a high risk of depression, owing to socio-cultural changes., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency and Southeast Asian ovalocytosis (SAO) caused by a 27-bp deletion in the band 3 gene (Band3Delta 27) are well-documented genetic traits resistant to malarial diseases; however, relationships between these traits and asymptomatic malaria infection hitherto had not been investigated. Filter-blotted blood samples were collected from a total of 210 healthy individuals, 100 males and 110 females, aged 6-17 years, in Sumba island, Indonesia, to survey for the presence of Plasmodium parasites, G6PD activity and the Band3Delta 27 mutation. Presence of P. falciparum and/or P. vivax was identified in 25 subjects (11.9%). In all, 24 subjects (11.4%) showed Band3Delta 27 heterozygously. In males and females, eight and nine subjects, respectively, showed G6PD deficiency. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of asymptomatic malaria infection between individuals with or without these traits (P>0.05). No alterations in the prevalence of asymptomatic malaria infection suggest that parasite invasion into erythrocytes is unlikely to be a target phase in which the two polymorphisms demonstrate possible protective effects against malaria.

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a maternally inherited late-onset form of blindness characterized by acute or subacute bilateral retinal degradation resulting in a permanent loss of central vision. G11778A, C3460A, and T14484C mutations on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are specific for LHON and account for most, but not all, worldwide LHON cases. A six-generation Indonesian LHON family with the T14484C mutation was analyzed. Polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis showed that all of the maternal lineages had the T14484C mutation in a homoplasmic form. Penetrance of the disease (33.3%) and male predominance (3:1) was similar to other worldwide LHON with the T14484C mutation. The incidence of offspring born to affected mothers was no different from that of unaffected mothers, and the age distribution of cases was no higher than that of asymptomatic carriers. Eight secondary mutations were sought but not detected. The patients of this family belonged to haplogroup M. These findings support the idea that the mtDNA backgrounds involved in the expression of LHON mutations in southeast Asians are different from those of Europeans.

To evaluate the resistance of SAO against species specific malaria infection, relationships between parasite species and the 27-bp deletion in the band 3 gene were studied in malaria endemic Sumba Island, eastern Indonesia. Thick blood films were prepared from patients with malaria symptoms (n=129) and healthy controls (n=231). Species of Plasmodium was identified by microscopic observation. The 27-bp deletion was screened by the PCR method. Among 231 healthy controls, 29 (12.6%) had the 27-bp deletion, whereas 14 (10.9%) among 129 patients confirmed with malaria infection harbored the 27-bp deletion. No significant difference was observed in the prevalence of the 27-bp deletion between controls and patients (p>0.8). There was no significant difference in the frequency of the 27-bp deletion between P. vivax and P. falciparum infected subjects at 5% level by Fisher's exact test. The present result showing no correlation between the presence of the 27-bp deletion and infected parasite species is consistent with the post-invasion resistance hypothesis that may involve not a single malaria species.

Duffy blood group was studied among malaria-endemic Thai and Indonesian populations: Hmong (n = 103), Akha (n = 218), Lisu (n = 44), Bugis (n = 95), Toraja (n = 77), Dani (n = 44), Mee (n = 80) and Irianese (n = 81). Phenotypes were studied by the ordinal indirect Coombs' test and genotypes were determined by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) test. DNA analysis was used to type the Duffy blood group system. Deduced allele frequencies of Fya (0.958-1.0) based on the phenotypes were similar to those in other populations in Southeast Asia and Oceania. The study revealed the presence of Fya-antigens showing weak reactivity to antisera as well as a discrepancy between the genotype shown by the PCR-RFLP study and that predicted by the phenotype. The PCR-RFLP study also suggested the presence of an alternative genetic basis for the Fy(a- b-) phenotype, which differs from the African type.

Background: Endemic foci of HTLV-1 carriers have been found in the world, however, the origin of HTLV-1 in humans is still unclear. Since a distinct type of virus strain was isolated from the Solomon Islands, detailed surveys on HTLV-1 prevalence in New Guinea are important to shed light on its history of dissemination., Objective: To clarify the seroprevalence of HTLV-1 in different regions of New Guinea Island., Study Design: Sera from 1221 individuals (649 males, 454 females and 118 unknown) in New Guinea Island were studied for the presence of antibodies to HTLV-1 by a particle agglutination and the Western blot (WB) tests. Two different sets of criteria, proposed by WHO and Kiyokawa et al., were employed to interpret the WB test. Since the latter seemed to lack adequate specificity, the WHO criteria was used for the evaluation of the seroprevalence throughout the study., Results: Seroprevalence of HTLV-1 differed by the WB criteria. By the more stringent criteria, HTLV-1 carriers were found in Madang, Chimbu and one hinterland province, Enga, in Papua New Guinea. An overall seroprevalence rate in different regions ranged from 0 to 14.6%. No seropositive individuals were found in Irian Jaya., Conclusions: To avoid overestimating the seropositivity rates, the WHO criteria would be more appropriate to employ for WB test by using the samples obtained from tropical and/or malaria endemic areas. This study is the first to show HTLV-1 infected individuals in the hinterland of New Guinea Island.

We employed in situ hybridization of chromosome-specific DNA probes ("chromosome painting") of all human chromosomes to establish homologies between the human and the silvered lead monkey karyotypes (Presbytis cristata 2n = 44). The 24 human paints gave 30 signals on the haploid female chromosome set and 34 signals on the haploid male chromosome set. This difference is due to a reciprocal translocation between the Y and an autosome homologous to human chromosome 5. This Y/autosome reciprocal translocation which is unique among catarrhine primates has produced a X1X2Y1Y2/X1X1X2X2 sex-chromosome system. Although most human syntenic groups have been maintained in the silvered leaf monkey chromosomes homologous to human chromosomes 14 and 15, 21 and 22 have experienced Robertsonian fusions. Further, the multiple FISH signals provided by libraries to human chromosomes 1/9, 6/16 indicate that these chromosomes have been split be reciprocal translocations. G-binding analysis shows three different forms of chromosome 1 (X2) which differ by a complex series of inversions in the 10 individuals karyotype. Comparisons with the hybridization patterns in hylobatids (gibbons and siamang) demonstrate that resemblances in chromosomal morphology and banding previously taken to indicate a special phylogenetic relationship between gibbons and colobines are due to convergence.

Through bioassay-guided separations of the chemical constituents of the Indonesian medicinal plant Beilschmiedia madang BL. a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid was obtained as the major antimalarial principle. The physicochemical properties of the alkaloid were consistent with the proposed structure of dehatrine. However, the alkaloid isolated by us was shown to be a mixture of two rotational isomers. The X-ray crystallographic analysis of 1 has shown that two rotamers are incorporated in a single crystal in 1:1 ratio. The complex NMR spectrum of 1 has also been defined as a mixture of two rotamers by extensive use of 2D (COSY and COLOC) techniques. Dehatrine has been shown to significantly inhibit the growth of cultured Plasmodium falciparum K1 strain (cholorquine resistant) with similar activity to quinine.

Asian nonhuman primates were surveyed seroepidemiologically for natural infection with human T-cell leukemia virus (ATLV/HTLV) or a closely related agent. Materials from various primates (three genera [Macaca, Presbytis, and Hylobates], 17 species, totalling 1,079 animals) under natural conditions were obtained in the field study. Virus infection was determined by the indirect immunofluorescence test using HTLV-specific antigens. Animals seropositive for HTLV were found only among macaques originating from various localities, toque monkeys in Sri Lanka (17.5%), crab-eating macaques in Thailand (1.3%), stumptailed macaques in Thailand (1.5%), rhesus monkeys in Thailand (3.3%), and Celebes macaques in Indonesia (16.9%). Langurs and gibbons were seronegative. Thus the wide distribution of HTLV in nature among various macaques suggests that the introduction of this virus into primates occurred in ancient times.
