Feed is a very important factor in the world of animal husbandry. Subang Regency is one of the beef cattle breeding centers in West Java and even in Indonesia and occupies the top 5 beef cattle populations in Indonesia. In Subang Regency, 1,500 families depend on beef cattle and other livestock businesses for their income, with an average of 3 to 4 livestock per family. but breeders in Subang Regency only focus on conventional livestock production processes and have not touched modern livestock. so that the level of welfare of farmers in Subang Regency is still not optimal. The biggest cost for livestock in Subang Regency is still the high price of concentrate and forage feed. This research aims to increase the knowledge of beef cattle breeders through counseling and coaching regarding the management of beef cattle in terms of improving the quality of feed so that it has added value. The research was carried out in Cibogo District, Subang Regency from July to November 2022 using the focus group discussion, training and monev methods. The results of this study are that the feed problem at the smallholder farmer level is the poor quality of the feed due to the lack of knowledge of breeders on how to process and store feed. Processing and storage are applied at the farmer level, namely storing forage fodder using the silage method and increasing knowledge of feed management. Breeders who are members of a group of beef cattle and are able to develop institutional management with standards for the production and management of feed in the group. Indonesia has the fourth largest population in the world and in the coming years food production will need to catch up with its growth. To fulfill the protein demand of this growing population, the productivity of the Indonesian agricultural sector should be increased. This can be achieved either by expanding the agricultural land or by increasing the productivity of existing agricultural land and protein use efficiency. An expansion of agricultural land is not always possible or desirable: large parts of Indonesia comprise forest areas, including tropical rain forests. Consequently, the optimization of the use of existing agricultural land is inevitable. The present manuscript describes and discusses the current protein consumption and production in Indonesia. It presents the levels predicted for 2035, which would imply a strong gap between consumption and production. Alternatives therefore need to be considered to avoid protein shortage in the future. Background: Inadequate access to affordable, safe, desirable and convenient nutrient-dense food is one of the underlying causes of child stunting. While targeted nutrition-sensitive interventions (eg, backyard 'nutri-gardens') may increase dietary diversity within farming households, such interventions have limited scalability across the wider food system where markets remain underdeveloped. This research aims to develop and assess market-based interventions for key nutrient-dense foods to help improve the diets of women and children in the first 1000 days of life., Methods: Data collection uses four parallel approaches in each of the three study countries (India, Indonesia and Senegal). (1) A novel food environment tool will be developed to characterise the accessibility and affordability of nutrient-dense foods in the study countries. The tool will be validated through pretesting using cognitive interviewing and piloting in purposively sampled households, 10 (cognitive interviewing) and 30 (piloting) households in each country; (2) stakeholder interviews (eg, with producers, intermediaries and retailers) will be conducted to map out nutrition-sensitive entry points of key value chains (eg, animal-sourced foods), before hotspots of potential food safety hazards will be identified from food samples collected along the chains; (3) the Optifood and Agrifood tools will be used to identify foods that can address food system nutrient gaps and engage key stakeholders to prioritise market interventions to improve nutrition outcomes. Optifood and Agrifood parameters will be informed by publicly available data, plus interviews and focus groups with value chain stakeholders; (4) informed by the previous three approaches and a campaign of participatory 'group model building', a novel system dynamics model will evaluate the impact of alternative market-based solutions on the availability and affordability of nutrient-dense foods over time., Ethics and Dissemination: The study has received ethical approval in the United Kingdom, Senegal, Indonesia and India. Hydrogen sulfide or H2S was a chemical compound which is colorless, flammable, explosive, corrosive, dangerous, and poisonous with the smell like rotten eggs. The source of H2S came from human activities namely industrial activity and waste. The animal feed industry and the seafood processing industry were industries that produced waste containing H2S gas. This research was done to determine the safe concentration of H2S which had the potential to disrupt the health of the community around Medan industrial area. This was an observational research, cross sectional and descriptive. The research population was residential community around the industrial area of animal feed and seafood processing at a radius of 300m and 800m. The number of research sample was 104 people. The data analysis used quantitative data analysis manually to decide the safe concentration (C safe) of H2S for community which were obtained from the data of experimental animal weight that was white mice(Wanimal), body surface area of white mice(BSA animal), workerweight(W), workerheight (h), workerrespiratory rate (BR), body surface area of worker (BSA), length of working time(t), concentration of H2S (C), NOAEL, animal Km, human Km, and safe human dose of toxin(SHD). The results showed measurements of H2S concentrations in the industrial area of animal feed and seafood processing at 300m was 0.0022ppm while at 800m was 0.0064 ppm, which means that both were above the Threshold Limit Value (TLV) of 0, 0005 ppm according to the ATSDR provisions regarding the Odor TLV H2S. According to KepMenLH No. KEP-50/MENLH/1996 concerning standard level of odor with TLV of 0.02 ppm, then only for the community around industrial areas at radius 300 m with a concentration of 0.022 ppm which was above the TLV. Coleus amboinicus Lour., Lamiaceae, is a perennial herb that is native to Indonesia and also cultivated in Africa, Asia and Australia. The major phytochemicals responsible for its bioactivity are rosmarinic acid (RA) and its analogues, flavonoids and abietane diterpenoids. The possibility of cultivation in a colder climate would extend the use of this herb and provide new opportunities to herb growers and livestock farmers. Our study to compare feed value and phytochemical composition of C. amboinicus plants cultivated in its original region, Indonesia, and in Poland. The crude protein content was significantly higher in plants cultivated in Indonesia compared to those cultivated in Poland—21% and 13% of dry matter, respectively. The higher ADF contents were detected in C. amboinicus cultivated in Indonesia, 38–41%, in comparison to 34% in plants cultivated in Poland. The phytochemical composition was also significantly influenced by the cultivation location. Polish samples were higher in polyphenols (RA and its analogues), and also had 1.5–2-fold higher antioxidant potential, as measured by DPPH scavenging, phosphomolybdenum reduction and Fenton reaction driven lipid peroxidation. The Indonesian samples contained more diterpenoid compounds, such as dihydroxyroyleanone, and the sum of terpenoids was ca. 10 times higher than in samples from Poland (15.59–23.64 vs. 1.87 µg/g of extracts). In conclusion, C. amboinicus is suitable for cultivation in non-optimal climatic conditions but some nutritional properties and bioactivity are significantly affected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In pasture-based dairy systems, feeding a complex concentrate mix in the parlor during milking that contains cereal grains and protein supplements has been shown to have milk production advantages over feeding straight cereal grain. This experiment had the aim of testing whether further milk production advantages could be elicited by adjusting the composition of the concentrate mix in an attempt to match the expected nutrient intake from pasture during late spring. The experiment used 96 lactating dairy cows, grazing perennial ryegrass pasture offered at a target allowance of 30 kg of dry matter/cow per day (to ground level) during late spring (mid October to November) in southeastern Australia. Cows were allocated into 3 replicates of 4 treatment groups, with 24 cows in each treatment. Each treatment group was offered 1 of 4 dietary treatments in the parlor at milking: control consisting of crushed wheat and barley grains; formulated grain mix (FGM) consisting of crushed wheat, barley, and corn grains and canola meal; designer grain mix 1 (DGM1) consisting of the same ingredients as the FGM grain mix but formulated using the CPM Dairy nutrition model to take into account the expected nutrient intake from pasture; and designer grain mix 2 (DGM2) consisting of the same ingredients as DGM1 but with canola meal replaced by urea and a fat supplement (Megalac, Volac Wilmar, Gresik, Indonesia). Concentrate mixes were offered at 8.0 kg of dry matter/cow per day, except for DGM2 cows, which were offered 7.5 kg of dry matter/cow per day. The experiment ran for a total of 28 d; after a 14-d adaptation period, nutrient intake, milk production, and body weight were measured over a 14-d measurement period. Milk yield (kg) of cows fed the FGM diet was greater than that of the control cows but was not different from that of the DGM1 and DGM2 cows. However, milk fat and protein yields (kg) were greater for cows fed the FGM diet than for all other diets. There was no difference in estimated daily pasture or total dry matter intakes between the 4 treatment groups, despite cows fed the DGM2 treatment consuming less of the concentrate mix (average 6.5 kg of dry matter/cow per day when offered 7.5 kg of dry matter/cow per day). This research has demonstrated the potential for using a nutrition model to take into account the expected nutrient intake from pasture to formulate a concentrate mix (DGM1) to achieve similar milk yields, but also highlighted the need for near real-time analyses of the pasture to be grazed so as to also capture benefits in terms of milk fat and protein yield., (Copyright © 2021 American Dairy Science Association. Background: Giant gourami ( Osphronemus goramy, Osphronemidae ), belonging to the gurami sago strain, is an important economic fish species that was newly released for domestication in 2018 in Indonesia. The present study aimed to determine the growth, production and feed conversion efficiency of gurami sago strain in different aquaculture systems. Methods: A mean of 240 juveniles were stocked (mean, 54.53 g and 13.88 cm) into concrete ponds, floating net cages and earthen freshwater ponds (12 m 3 ) with three replicates of each. The juveniles were fed a floating commercial pellet diet containing 30% crude protein and 5% crude lipids. Feed was supplied at 3% of fish biomass per day throughout the 90 days of the experiment. The research was conducted in the area surrounding Lake Maninjau of West Sumatera Province, Indonesia. Results: After 90 days, the mean weight of fish reared in concrete ponds was 166.86 g, floating net cages was 179.51 g and earthen freshwater ponds was 149.89 g. The mean final biomass was 37.64 kg for concrete ponds, 41.27 kg for floating net cages, and 33.72 kg for earthen freshwater ponds. The specific growth rates (%/day) for concrete ponds, floating net cages and earthen freshwater ponds were 0.67, 0.75 and 0.62, respectively. The feed conversion rates were 1.45 for concrete ponds, 1.30 for floating net cages and 1.87 for earthen freshwater ponds. The net yields (kg m -3 ) were 2.05 for concrete ponds, 2.27 for floating net cages, and 1.73 for earthen freshwater ponds. The exponents (b) of the length-weight relationship were calculated for concrete ponds (1.0146), floating net cages (1.2641), and earthen freshwater ponds (1.0056). Pig farming is a common practice among smallholder farmers in Nusa Tenggara Timur province (NTT), eastern Indonesia. To understand their production systems a survey of smallholder pig farmers was conducted. Eighteen villages were randomly selected across West Timor, Flores and Sumba islands, and 289 pig farmers were interviewed. Information on pig management, biosecurity practices, pig movements and knowledge of pig health and disease, specifically classical swine fever was collected. The mean number of pigs per herd was 5.0 (not including piglets), and total marketable herd size (pigs≥two months of age) did not differ significantly between islands (P=0.215). Chickens (71%) and dogs (62%) were the most commonly kept animal species in addition to pigs. Pigs were mainly kept as a secondary income source (69%) and 83% of farmers owned at least one sow. Seventy-four percent (74%) of pigs were housed in a kandang (small bamboo pen) and 25% were tethered. Pig feeds were primarily locally sourced agricultural products (93%). The majority of farmers had no knowledge of classical swine fever (91%) and biosecurity practices were minimal. Forty-five percent (45%) reported to consuming a pig when it died and 74% failed to report cases of sick or dead pigs to appropriate authorities. Sixty-five percent (65%) of farmers reported that a veterinarian or animal health worker had never visited their village. Backyard slaughter was common practice (55%), with meat mainly used for home consumption (89%). Most (73%) farmers purchased pigs in order to raise the animal on their farm with 36% purchasing at least one pig within the last year. Predominantly fattener pigs (34%) were given as gifts for celebratory events, most commonly for funerals (32%), traditional ceremonies (27%) and marriages (10%). Understanding the complex relationship between primates and their habitats is essential for effective conservation plans. Peat-swamp forest has recently been recognized as an important habitat for the Southern Bornean gibbon (Hylobates albibarbis), but information is scarce on the factors that link gibbon density to characteristics of this unique ecosystem. Our aims in this study were firstly to estimate gibbon density in different forest subtypes in a newly protected, secondary peat-swamp forest in the Sabangau Catchment, Indonesia, and secondly to identify which vegetation characteristics correlate with gibbon density. Data collection was conducted in a 37.1 km(2) area, using auditory sampling methods and vegetation "speed plotting". Gibbon densities varied between survey sites from 1.39 to 3.92 groups/km(2). Canopy cover, tree height, density of large trees and food availability were significantly correlated with gibbon density, identifying the preservation of tall trees and good canopy cover as a conservation priority for the gibbon population in the Sabangau forest. This survey indicates that selective logging, which specifically targets large trees and disrupts canopy cover, is likely to have adverse effects on gibbon populations in peat-swamp forests, and calls for greater protection of these little-studied ecosystems., ((c) 2010 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

Studies were undertaken on the viability of the metacercariae of Fasciola gigantica when stored in water at 13 degrees C for periods up to 23 weeks, exposed to the sunlight for up to 8 h or stored at a range of temperatures and humidities for up to 10 weeks. Excysted metacercariae were catergorized microscopically as viable (motile and undamaged), dubious (not motile and undamaged) or dead (visible necrosis). The infectivity of viable and dubious metacercariae and unselected reference metacercariae held in water at 7 degrees C for 20 days or longer was assessed by comparing numbers of flukes recovered from infected Merino sheep. Mean recovery rates were 54.6%, 7.2% and 37.2%, respectively, for viable, dubious and unselected metacercariae. Metacercariae immersed in water remained viable longer than those allowed to desiccate. Viability was promoted by decreasing temperature and increasing humidity. Exposure to direct sunlight killed metacercariae within 8 h. Results indicated that in lowland Indonesian irrigated rice paddies, metacercariae immersed in water are likely to survive for less than 5 weeks while those that become desiccated will survive less than 2 weeks. This information, together with the option of exposing fresh rice stalks to direct sunlight before feeding them to livestock, can assist farmers in reducing infection with F gigantica.

Sixty-four lambs in North Sumatra were used in a factorial experiment comprising two systems of management (grazing and stall-feeding), four levels of legume supplementation (0, 250, 500 and 1,000 g/d Pueraria javanica) and two anthelmintic treatments (none and albendazole every four weeks). The experiment lasted five months. The mortality rate for lambs not given anthelmintic was 28%, significantly higher (P less than 0.05) than for animals given anthelmintic which had zero mortality. Anthelmintic treatment increased growth rate from only 2 g/d to 29 g/d (P less than 0.05) and reduced faecal egg count from 1,700 epg to 270 epg. When not given anthelmintic grazing lambs had a higher mortality rate (38%) than stall-fed lambs (19%) but this difference was not significant. When given anthelmintic grazing lambs has a slightly higher growth rate (32 g/d) than stall-fed lambs (26 g/d). System of management had no apparent effect on egg count. Legume supplementation reduced the egg count of lambs not given anthelmintic but had no significant effect on mortality or growth rate.

Research conducted since 1980 on the nutrition and feeding of Kacang goats and Javanese Thintail sheep for meat production in Indonesia is reviewed. Feeding practices in three villages were monitored, along with animal production criteria, to better understand the limitations imposed by feed resource availability. Village and experiment station data showed that native or cultivated tropical grasses fed alone did not support growth of young goats and that lambs fed napier grass alone grew at no more than 20 to 25 g/d. Supplementing these grasses with tree legume foliage or wilted cassava leaves at modest levels improved ADG to about 50 g for lambs and 20 g for kids. Faster gains were obtained with higher intakes of tree legume foliage, or with combinations of higher-energy supplements such as rice bran, cassava meal and molasses. A response to mineral supplementation also was shown. Reproductive performance of North Sumatran ewes grazing a native pasture under rubber trees also was improved with supplementation. These experiments show that economically effective options exist for improving small ruminant diets in the humid tropics.

The extent to which ewe reproduction could be improved by supplementary feeding around lambing time was investigated with four groups each of 16 ewes which were run continuously with fertile rams until they had lambed three times. One group was fed at a maintenance level throughout and the other three groups were given supplementary feed during the last four week of each pregnancy only, or during the last four weeks of pregnancy plus the first six weeks after each lambing, or during the last four weeks of pregnancy plus the first 12 weeks after each lambing. The average body weight of lambs weaned at 13 weeks of age increased (P less than 0.001) progressively from 6.0 to 9.1 kg with increasing duration of supplementary feeding. There were however no significant differences between treatment groups in mean interval between successive lambings (202 days), ovulation rate (2.26), litter size (1.58), lamb birth weight (1.8 kg), preweaning lamb mortality (37%) or number of lambs weaned per lambing (0.99).

Lamb production in relation to total feed consumption was recorded in Javanese thin tail (JTT) ewes and in first cross Suffolk x JTT (SX), Wiltshire Horn x JTT (WX) and Poll Dorset x JTT (DX) ewes over three successive lambings or for 21/2 years after joining with rams of the same genotypes in a continuous mating system. For the JTT, SX, WX and DX genotypes respectively, total numbers of lambs weaned per ewe joined were 3.77, 2.50, 2.08 and 1.33, mean lamb body weights at weaning were 12.8, 18.8, 18.6 and 20.9 kg, total weights of lamb weaned per ewe joined were 48.4, 46.9, 38.8 and 27.9 kg, and average weights of feed consumed by the whole production system per kg of lamb weaned were 16.4, 21.9, 23.5 and 32.8 kg. Thus cross-bred ewes required more feed to produce fewer though heavier lambs without any real increase in total productivity.
