In November 2020, we observed several individuals and collected one juvenile of an unidentified anthiadine fish (Serranidae) between depths of 250 and 307 m near vertical walls of rocky reefs in the northern Red Sea. Further morphological and molecular analyses revealed that the collected specimen matches Sacura boulengeri, a species previously reported only from the Gulf of Oman to India., (© 2022 Fisheries Society of the British Isles.)

Thirteen species of the serranid fish genus Plectranthias Bleeker (1873) are recognized in the Western Indian Ocean (including the Red Sea and Persian Gulf): Plectranthias bauchotae Randall 1980, P. gardineri (Regan 1908), P. inermis Randall 1980, P. intermedius (Kotthaus 1973), P. klausewitzi Zajonz 2006, P. longimanus (Weber 1913), P. maugei Randall 1980, P. morgansi (Smith 1961), P. nanus Randall 1980, P. pelicieri Randall & Shimizu 1994, P. vexillarius Randall 1980, P. winniensis Tyler 1966, and a new species, P. elaine sp. nov., from the east coast of South Africa is described. The present paper reports the first record of occurrence in the Arabian Sea and extension of distribution of Meganthias filiferus from the Thailand coast of the eastern Indian Ocean. A single specimen measuring 211 mm SL was collected from a commercial trawler operating in the Arabian Sea off the south-western coast of India during August 2008.
