The government of India implemented social distancing interventions to contain the COVID‐19 epidemic. However, effects of these interventions on epidemic dynamics are yet to be understood. Rates of laboratory‐confirmed COVID‐19 infections per day and effective reproduction number (Rt) were estimated for 7 periods (Pre‐lockdown, Lockdown Phases 1 to 4 and Unlock 1–2) according to nationally implemented interventions with phased relaxation. Adoption of these interventions was estimated using Google mobility data. Estimates at the national level and for 12 Indian states most affected by COVID‐19 are presented. Daily case rates ranged from 0.03 to 285.60/10 million people across 7 discrete periods in India. From 18 May to 31 July 2020, the NCT of Delhi had the highest case rate (999/10 million people/day), whereas Madhya Pradesh had the lowest (49/10 million/day). Average Rt was 1.99 (95% CI 1.93–2.06) and 1.39 (95% CI 1.38–1.40) for the entirety of India during the period from 22 March 2020 to 17 May 2020 and from 18 May 2020 to 31 July 2020, respectively. Median mobility in India decreased in all contact domains during the period from 22 March 2020 to 17 May 2020, with the lowest being 21% in retail/recreation, except home which increased to 129% compared to the 100% baseline value. Median mobility in the 'Grocery and Pharmacy' returned to levels observed before 22 March 2020 in Unlock 1 and 2, and the enhanced mobility in the Pharmacy sector needs to be investigated. The Indian government imposed strict contact mitigation, followed by a phased relaxation, which slowed the spread of COVID‐19 epidemic progression in India. The identified daily COVID‐19 case rates and Rt will aid national and state governments in formulating ongoing COVID‐19 containment plans. Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is increasingly recognized as a significant risk factor in the development of head and neck cancers (HNCs), with varying prevalence and impact. This study aims to systematically review and analyze the prevalence of HPV in HNCs in India, providing insights into regional variations., Methods: A comprehensive literature search was carried out using PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science up to November 10, 2023. Inclusion criteria focused on original research reporting HPV-positive cases among HNC patients in India. We used Nested-Knowledge software, for screening, and data extraction. The modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used for quality assessment of included studies. We pooled the prevalence of HPV among HNC patients and performed a random-effects model meta-analysis using R software (version 4.3)., Results: The search yielded 33 studies, encompassing 4654 HNC patients. The pooled prevalence of HPV infection was found to be 33% (95% CI: 25.8-42.6), with notable heterogeneity (I² = 95%). Analysis of subgroups according to geographical location indicated varying prevalence rates. Specifically, the prevalence was 47% (95% CI: 32.2-62.4) in the eastern regions and 19.8% (95% CI: 10.8-33.4) in the western regions. No evidence of publication bias was detected., Conclusion: The observed considerable regional disparities on the prevalence of HPV in HNC patients in India emphasizes the need for integrated HPV vaccination and screening programs in public health strategies. The findings underline the necessity for further research to explore regional variations and treatment responses in HPV-associated HNCs, considering the impact of factors such as tobacco use and the potential benefits of HPV vaccination., (© 2024. The accelerating epidemics of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in India call for a comprehensive public health response which can effectively combat and control them before they peak and inflict severe damage in terms of unaffordable health, economic, and social costs. To synthesize and present recent evidences regarding the effectiveness of several types of public health interventions to reduce NCD burden. Interventions influencing behavioral risk factors (like unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco and alcohol consumption) through policy, public education, or a combination of both have been demonstrated to be effective in reducing the NCD risk in populations as well as in individuals. Policy interventions are also effective in reducing the levels of several major biological risk factors linked to NCDs (high blood pressure; overweight and obesity; diabetes and abnormal blood cholesterol). Secondary prevention along the lines of combination pills and ensuring evidenced based clinical care are also critical. Though the evidence for health promotion and primary prevention are weaker, policy interventions and secondary prevention when combined with these are likely to have a greater impact on reducing national NCD burden. A comprehensive and integrated response to NCDs control and prevention needs a "life course approach." Proven cost-effective interventions need to be integrated in a NCD prevention and control policy framework and implemented through coordinated mechanisms of regulation, environment modification, education, and health care responses. Despite significant progress in medical research, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) continue to be the largest contributors of morbidity and mortality both in developed and developing countries. The status of public health interventions related to CVDs prevention was reviewed to identify actions that are required to bridge the existing gap between the evidence and the policy. We used a framework comprising two steps - "bench to bedside" and from "bedside to community" to evaluate translational research. Available literature was reviewed to document the current status of CVD prevention and control at national level in India. Case studies of risk factor surveillance, tobacco control and blood pressure measurement were used to understand different aspects of translational research. National level initiatives in non-communicable diseases surveillance, prevention and control are a recent phenomena in India. The delay in translation of research to policy has occurred primarily at the second level, i.e., from 'bedside to community'. The possible reasons for this were: inappropriate perception of the problem by policy makers and programme managers, lack of global public health guidelines and tools, and inadequate nationally relevant research related to operationalization and cost of public health interventions. Public health fraternity, both nationally and internationally, needs to establish institutional mechanisms to strengthen human resource capacity to initiate and monitor the process of translational research in India. Larger public interest demands that focus should shift to overcoming the barriers at community level translation. Background: Quick scaling-up of innovative and promising interventions in health systems of low and middle-income countries to rapidly achieve population level benefits is a key challenge. While there is consensus on the need for rigorous scientific evidence on effectiveness of interventions before considering scale-up, there can be significant time lag for the want of gold-standard evidence. The Safe Childbirth Checklist (SCC) programme in India, demonstrated how an innovation was robustly evaluated and scaled up nationally, within a short span of time. In this narrative review, we describe the strategies discussed in various published scale-up frameworks and map them against the strategies adopted by the SCC programme to identify accelerators which facilitated its rapid scale up.Methods: The narrative review - done from May to June 2017 - involved keyword searches of electronic databases of PubMed, Ovid Medline and Google Scholar. It included the key words 'pilot', 'health innovations', 'scale-up', 'replication', 'expansion', 'increased coverage', 'conceptual models for scale-up', 'frame-works for scale-up', 'evidence for scale-up' in the title of publications,. This search was limited to publications in English after the year 1995. We used snowball sampling approach (by referring to bibliographies of shortlisted publications) to identify additional publications related to scale-up. We then screened the identified publications independently and relevant publications that discussed attributes for a conceptual model for scale-up of public health interventions in low and middle-income countries were shortlisted. We then mapped the strategies we used in SCC program scale up against those described in the shortlisted frameworks to identify seven accelerators which facilitated rapid scale up.Results: The identified accelerators were: testing the intervention in real world, resource constrained settings; using an appropriate and time sensitive research design; testing the intervention at substantial scale and in diverse settings; using an adaptive and iterative prototyping approach for implementation; sharing data and evidence with key stakeholders on an ongoing basis; targeting bridge resources through strategic engagement of stakeholders and timely integration of scale-up plans with annual planning and budgeting cycles and systems.Conclusion: These accelerators will complement current frameworks and provide guidance to future scale-up initiatives in India and elsewhere.
