Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has infected millions of people globally. Many recent studies have suggested that the ABO blood type may contribute to COVID-19 infection immunopathogenesis. We aimed to determine the proportional distribution of COVID-19 infection among ABO blood types. Methodology: This retrospective research was conducted in the city of Jodhpur (Rajasthan), India. The research involved 1140 COVID-19 patients, whose medical records were available in blood banks. The data was evaluated statistically using IBM SPSS 26. Results: The proportion of blood group B among infected patients was highest (37.36%). Among all the cases, blood group A had the highest odds ratio of 1.062 (CI 95%, 0.92-1.21, p = 0.412). All versus one blood group analysis also showed that blood group A (odds ratio = 1.062 [CI 95%, 0.92-1.22] p = 0.412) was more likely to be infected with COVID-19 than the remaining blood groups. In the year 2021, blood group B had the highest risk of COVID-19 infection (odds ratio = 1.138). Conclusions: Based on our findings, the blood groups A and B are more likely to be infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The overall average age for COVID-19 infection was lower, and the number of incidences in female patients was higher in 2021, relative to 2020. Background: Association between the ABO blood group and patient outcomes in COVID-19 patients is still unexplored. A known association may help to understand possible risks in advance to the management of such COVID-19 patients. The present study was designed to test such association if there is any, between the ABO blood group and the severity of COVID-19 patients. Methods: The present hospital-based observational study was conducted at a COVID-19 dedicated tertiary care hospital in North India over a period of six months during the first wave of the pandemic in the country. Five hundred consecutive patients, who tested positive for COVID-19 using RT-PCR on oropharyngeal/nasopharyngeal swabs, admitted to the hospital were included in the study. ABO and Rhesus (Rh) blood grouping was done on leftover hematology blood samples using gel column agglutination technology. Required clinical details of patients including age, gender, clinical symptoms, comorbidities, outcomes, etc., were obtained from the patient’s case sheets. Results: The most common blood group was ‘B’ (42.8%) followed by ‘O’ (23.4%), and ‘A’ (22.4%) while the least common was ‘AB’ (11.4%). Rh positive was seen in 96.2% while 3.8% were negative. Baseline characteristics were comparable including length of hospital stay, duration of symptoms, and associated comorbid illnesses. The need for intensive care unit (ICU) admissions (P = 0.05) and intubations (P = 0.20) was similar across all four blood groups. Differences in the severity of COVID-19 disease and mortalities among the groups were non-significant. Conclusion: There was no observed association found between the ABO blood group and COVID-19 infection requiring hospitalization, ICU admission, intubation, and outcomes. Introduction: The Palmprint, a dermatoglyphic marker, is defined as the print of a palm, which is mainly composed of the palmar flexion creases and ridges. The palm print patterns and blood groups are unique, stable and remain unchanged throughout the life. Hence, the present study was undertaken to investigate association between Palm print patterns and ABO and Rh blood groups in both the genders of the North Indian population. Material and Method: The sample for the cross-sectional study was consist of palmprints from 300 (Male: female 1:1,150 each) medical students of North India. The palmprints of both the hands of the subjects were recorded by the ink and roller method. Result: The distribution of palmprint patterns of both hands showed a high frequency of Category 5, moderate of category 4, small of category 6 & 3 and none of category 1 &2. The study also show gender discrimination as category 5 was more common in males while Category 4 was more common in females (P-value for Right hand is.012 and for Left hand is <.001). Positive correlation was found between palm print patterns and blood group but was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The findings of present study revealed statistically significant sexual dimorphism in the study population. Palm print patterns also showed a positive correlation with ABO blood groups. Novel coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) has spread worldwide, and to date presence of the virus has been recorded in 215 countries contributing 0.43 million of death. The role of blood groups in susceptibility/resistance to various infectious diseases has been reported. However, the association of blood groups with susceptibility to COVID-19 infections or related death are limited. In the present report, we performed an epidemiological investigation in the Indian population to decipher the importance of blood groups concerning susceptibility or mortality in COVID-19 infection. Data on COVID-19 infection and mortality was obtained from the website of the Government of India. Prevalence of ABO blood groups in different states and union territories of India were searched using different databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar. Relevant articles were downloaded, and data were extracted. Spearman's rank coefficient analysis was employed to study the correlation between blood group frequencies and COVID-19 infection or mortality rate. A significant inverse correlation was observed between the frequency of O blood group and the COVID-19 mortality rate (Spearman r = −0.36, P = 0.03), indicating a possible protective role of O blood group against COVID-19 related death. In contrast, the prevalence of blood group B was positively correlated with COVID-19 death/million (Spearman r = 0.67, P < 0.0001), suggesting B blood type as a deleterious factor in COVID-19 infection. ABO blood group system is associated with poor prognosis of COVID-19 infection. Blood group O may protects, and subjects with blood type B could be susceptible to COVID-19 mortality. CONTEXT: Dengue fever (DF) has been steadily increasing in India with outbreaks in certain areas taking the proportion of epidemics. Along with secondary dengue, several risk factors predispose to dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. Very few studies associating the relationship between dengue and its severity with ABO blood group have been documented. AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine the association between distribution of ABO Rh blood groups and DF and DF with thrombocytopenia. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This was a retrospective descriptive study conducted at the clinical laboratory of the department of microbiology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dengue patients whose case record contained information on blood group were screened for details of blood group and confirmed dengue diagnosis. Randomly 384 case records were selected. These were divided into two groups; Group 1 included DF cases (platelet count >20,000) and Group 2 included DF cases with thrombocytopenia (platelet count <20,000). Control group consisted of patients other than dengue, whose blood grouping had been done; randomly 390 were selected and analyzed. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: P value was calculated using the Chi-square test. Odds ratio were calculated using the Fisher's exact test. RESULTS: DF was higher in 23% of individuals with AB blood group as compared to 8.5% of controls (P = 0.0004), whereas patients with blood group O were significantly less affected with DF (P = 0.0048). Disease severity was not associated with any of the blood groups. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with AB blood group are more prone to DF, whereas individuals with blood group O are less prone. BACKGROUND: Molecular genotyping of ABO blood group system has identified more than 60 "O" group alleles based on the single-nucleotide polymorphisms present in the ABO gene. Heterogeneity of O group alleles has been observed in various countries from South America, Europe, Middle East, and Asia. India is a vast country with more than 1300 million population which is divided into various ethnic and tribal groups. However, very little is known about the heterogeneity of O alleles in Indians. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 116 O group individuals from the mixed population of Mumbai, India, were enrolled in the present study. DNA was extracted using the standard phenol-- chloroform method. The exons 6 and 7 of the ABO gene were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-single-strand conformation polymorphism and/or DNA sequencing. The genotyping results were compared with our earlier findings. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Overall, ten different genotypes were identified. Three rare alleles, namely, O05, O11, and O26 were seen in the mixed group category. These results suggest that there is an internal heterogeneity in the mixed group while Dhodias and Parsis, the groups which were screened earlier, seem to be more homogenous groups. An important piece of information emerges out from this study, that is, O01O02 genotype is expressing some selective force in population groups screened in India as well as many other groups worldwide. CONCLUSION: In the future, molecular genotyping of the ABO blood group system among different ethnic and tribal Indian groups would help in generating data to fill up the gaps in the molecular ABO map of the world. This study aimed to find an association between ABO blood groups with presence and severity of Coronary artery disease (CAD) among Indian population. 1500 patients undergoing elective coronary angiogram (CAG) at a tertiary care hospital in Karnataka were enrolled in the study. Baseline demographic data and the presence of cardiac comorbidities were documented. Data from baseline echocardiography and angiographic studies were compiled. The incidence of CAD was higher among patients with blood group A. Background: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is one of the most common premalignant conditions in Indian subcontinent due to the traditional use of Areca nut and its various preparations. The genetic predisposition has also been reported in its etiopathogenesis. The rate of malignant transformation is between 7% to 14%.Aim: To evaluate whether ABO blood group is related to OSMF risk.Subjects and Methods: It was a cross-sectional hospital-based study. A convenient sample of 164 study subjects constituted the cases and 180 subjects constituted the comparison group.Statistical Analysis Used: The results were analyzed using chi-square test and odds ratio.Results: The chi-square analysis could not establish any significant relationship between OSMF and ABO blood group. But, when the strength of the association was measured using odds ratio, subjects with blood group A had 1.181 times higher risk of developing OSMF in comparison to other groups.Conclusion: The subjects with blood group A were at higher risk of developing OSMF in comparison to others. By performing blood group determination using a routine method at outreach programs, the susceptible individuals can be identified and counselled to quit the habit, thereby avoiding potential complications. Summary: There is increasing evidence that the ABO blood group phenotypes modulates Plasmodium falciparum rosetting and may influence the clinical manifestation of severe malaria. Whether blood group phenotypes are associated with risk of severe falciparum malaria in Odisha, we analyzed 343 adult malaria patients. The results showed high prevalence of blood group B in both mild (n=110) and severe malaria (cerebral malaria [CM]; n=130 and non-cerebral severe malaria [NCSM]; n=103) categories among the non-O group and while type O is significantly associated with protection against CM, patients with type A and B group had increased risk for developing CM. Further, the strength of association for B group (p=< 0.0001) was high and has double the risk of (OR=5.0) of developing CM compared to blood group A (OR=2.5). Such findings may probably be due to strain specific blood group preferences of P. falciparum and high prevalence of B group. However, the ABO blood group distribution of mild malaria was comparable with that of the NCSM group of patients. The lack of association of ABO phenotypes with NCSM is evidence for the hypothesis that the underlying pathogenesis cascades are different in CM and NCSM clinical presentations. Objective This study was conducted to document the frequency ABO & rhesus blood groups in potential male blood donor belong to south area of Karnataka. Design: Observational cross sectional study. Settings: Blood transfusion center at Davangere, Karnataka. Methods The data of blood donors from July 2009 to December 2009. Results Total number of donors studied was 3, 048. The commonest blood group was O present in 37. 87% followed by B in 29. 98%,A in 23. 88% and AB in 8. 29%. While 95. 41% donors were Rh positive and 4. 59% was Rh negative. The maximum donors were between in age group 20-39 years. The maximum prevalence of hemoglobin % ranges from 13. 0-13. 9 about 2, 983(75. 11%). The maximum prevalence of weight among the donors was between 60 to 69 kg about 1, 201(39. 40%) and the least weight appears between 80 to 90 kg about 254(8. 4%). Conclusion Blood group O is the commonest ABO blood group and 95. 41% are Rh + in this area,the maximum prevalence of donors in age group, Hb% and Weight are 20. 39 years, 13. 0-13. 5 gm% and 50-69 kg respectively. Background: ABO blood group has been linked with a number of diseases including cancer. Association of ABO blood type with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has been sparsely reported and the results are inconsistent. We undertook this study to analyze if any association exists between the ABO and Rh blood groups and ESCC risk., Methods: We conducted a hospital-based case control study to analyze ABO and Rh blood groups in patients with histologically proven diagnosis of ESCC and compared them with healthy donors from the same population. ABO and Rh blood group status of general population was obtained from the blood bank at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) and from original articles published from time to time. Chi-Square test was performed to look for statistical significance., Results: For this study, 206 patients were prospectively enrolled. Seventy-four (35.9%) patients had blood group O. Blood groups type A and type B was found each in 59 (28.6%) patients. In 108,014 healthy donors, 35.3% had blood type O followed by type B (33.66%). There was no significant difference in any of the blood types between patients with ESCC and donors (P = 0.31)., Conclusion: No association exists between ABO blood type and the risk of ESCC.
