Millets are small‐seeded annual crops grown as cereal grains. They are known for their nutritional benefits and their role in preventing health problems. These grains are classified into major and minor millets. Kodo millet (Paspalum scrobiculatum), one of the minor millets, originated from Africa as a drought‐resistant crop and was domesticated in India in 3000 BC. It is grown in various states of India and is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The Kodo seed is rich in phytochemical compounds and dietary fibers with remarkable storage properties. It can be stored for extended periods under normal storage conditions and is found as a famine crop, which means it can be used as an alternative to major cereals. Kodo millet is a rich source of phenolic compounds known for their antioxidant properties. It also contains antinutritional factors that can limit its use, but these can be reduced by proper processing methods to enhance its food applications. Different traditional methods, such as milling, decortication, roasting, germination, and fermentation, along with novel techniques such as microwave, cold plasma and ultrasound treatment significantly impact the value addition of Kodo millet and the development of various food products. Background: Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) is one of the oldest spices crop of the world. It is the third largest seed spice in India after coriander and cumin. It is a Rabi season crop, mostly grown in sandy loam soil. The present study was carried out to get better information regarding GCV, PCV, heritability and genetic advance, pre requisite for formulating an effective breeding programme. Methods: Fifty-two accessions of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) including four checks viz., (AFg-1, AFg-2, AFg-3 and RMt-1) were evaluated in augmented complete block design (ACBD) in Rabi 2021-2022 for nine quantitative traits. Analysis of variance for agro-morphological characters showed in significant differences among the studied accessions indicating existence of wide variability. Adjusted mean values were used for estimation of genetic variability parameters. Result: The high to medium magnitude of genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV), high heritability coupled with high genetic advance were expressed by traits viz., number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant seed yield per plant and test weight. On the basis of per se performance of fifty-six accessions including checks it is concluded that selection of number of branches per plant and number of pods per plant could be effective in EC510598 and AFg-1. Likewise effective selection could be made in IC0624520 for early maturing. For pod length, accession EC510631 and for seed yield per plant EC510737, EC510536 and AFg-1 could be efficiently utilized for improvement of respective trait in fenugreek. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jujube or ber (Ziziphus spp.) is one of the most important fruit crops of India's arid and semi-arid regions because of its high adaptability to resource constraints hot (semi)arid region. Jujube is a rich source of minerals, vitamins and dietary antioxidants to arid zone dwellers, where it is known as poor man's apple. Given the present rising trends in discovering and exploiting plant-based health-promoting compounds, it is imperative to know the extent of variability with respect to fruit nutritional compositions present in the jujube germplasms. In this study, we assessed genetic variability for fruit nutritional and functional quality traits in eighteen jujube accessions belonging to three species (Z. mauritiana, Z. rotundifolia and Z. oenoplia) from an ex-situ collection from Indian arid and semi-arid regions in two consecutive fruiting seasons (2020-21 and 2021-22). Results revealed significant variability among eighteen jujube genotypes for important fruits physico-biochemical parameters. The IC 625864 (Z. oenoplia) identified as a superior accession for fruit antioxidant potential with having high levels of total phenols (256.2 mg/100 g dry weight) and total antioxidants (423 mg/100 g in FRAP). Moreover, IC 625849 (Z. mauritiana) and IC 625848 (Z. rotundifolia) were other genotypes containing high levels of phenols and total antioxidant (FRAP). Thus, while aiming for simultaneous improvement for total antioxidants with phenols, IC 625848, IC 625849 and IC 625864 genotypes can be considered as valuable resource for jujube fruit quality improvement program. Further, the high levels of phenotypic variance with high genotypic variance coupled with high heritability and genetic advance particularly for total antioxidants, total phenols, and ascorbic acid contents in fruits, indicating them to be considered as reliable biochemical markers to identify the productive genotypes having higher amounts of dietary antioxidants. Depending on the identified genotypes for their richness in the particular phytonutrients, these can be exploited either for table purpose or biofortification of other products, or using in jujube breeding program for quality improvement. Summary: Water deficiency is one of the most severe abiotic stresses in rainfed dry lands and limits crop productivity. Exogenous applications of salicylic acid (SA) have been applied to mitigate the adverse effects of water-deficit stresses, but the relative efficacy of different derivatives of SA in enhancing water-deficit tolerance along with the underlying physio-biochemical mechanism and yield of crops is not well documented. Field experiments were conducted to ascertain the relative efficacy of exogenous application of three plant bioregulators (PBRs) [SA, thiosalicylic acid and 5-sulfosalicylic acid (SSA)], each at three concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mM), on the growth, physio-biochemical characteristics and yield of cluster bean under rainfed conditions. Based on a 2-year field experiment, the application of PBRs enhanced yield (from 8 to 16%). The yield enhancement with the application of PBRs was associated with elevated water content (from 9 to 17%), membrane stability (from 12 to 18%) and antioxidant enzyme activity (from 12 to 33%) and reduced lipid peroxidation (from −15 to −34%) in leaves. The effects of PBRs were conditionally type and concentration dependent. The application of SSA at a rate of 1 mM was more effective in enhancing water-deficit tolerance and improving the yield of cluster bean under water shortage conditions. This study provides empirical evidence of the potential for the application of SA and its derivatives to enhance crop yields under drought conditions. Two-year field experiments were conducted to study the effect of different levels of inorganic fertilizers, farmyard manure (FYM), and bio-inoculants on wheat productivity and profitability. Results specified that judicious application of inorganic fertilizers, FYM, and bio-inoculants significantly increased the productivity and profitability of wheat. Data suggested that the aggregate levels of fertilizer up to 100% NPK ha−1 resulted in significant increases in all growth attributes, grain yield (+206%), straw yield (+177%), and harvest index (+7%) as compared to control. Meanwhile, plots with the application of 10 t ha−1 FYM significantly (p < 0.05) increased grain yield (+26%) and straw yield (+22%) as compared to the control. Similarly, significant enhancement in grain and straw yields was observed with the application of PGPR + VAM over no-inoculation. Results showed that the significantly higher grain and straw yield attained by application of 75% NPK fertilizer + 10 t ha−1 FYM was at par with the application of 100% NPK fertilizer alone. Further, net returns (profitability) and B:C ratio (2.37) were significantly higher with fertilization with 75% NPK + 10 t ha−1 FYM along with PGPR + VAM as compared to 100% NPK alone. Overall, it can be concluded that the combination of 75% NPK and 10 t ha−1 FYM along with PGPR + VAM represented the optimum for net return and B:C ratio and reduced (25%) dose of NPK as compared to the rest of the treatment combinations. The performance of reciprocal crosses of Rhode Island red (RIR) and Kadaknath was studied for comparison with the performance of purebred RIR and Kadaknath. A total of 292 birds comprising of purebred RIR and Kadaknath and reciprocal crosses were divided into four groups, viz., 74 birds of purebred Rhode Island red (R), 70 birds of purebred Kadaknath (K); and 72 birds of Rhode Island Red x Kadaknath (R x K) and 76 birds of Kadaknath x Rhode Island Red (K x R) as reciprocal crosses. The body weight (BW) at day-old, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 28, 36, and 40 weeks of age, age at first egg (AFE) and total egg number (TEN) up to 40th week of age were recorded for each group. The phenotypic characteristics of birds and their egg quality parameters were recorded at the 40th week of age. The phenotypic and carcass qualities were recorded at the 28th week of age for male and female birds. The results of the study indicated that the body weight (BW), egg weight (EW), TEN, and dressed weight (DW) for purebred RIR were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than purebred Kadaknath. The EW of both the reciprocal crosses was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than the purebred Kadaknath. Use of RIR female in a cross with Kadaknath males significantly (p < 0.05) increased TEN and BW. The use of RIR male in crosses with purebred Kadaknath female resulted in higher DW for their crossbred male. Use of either male or female purebred RIR in crosses with Kadaknath did not affect crossbred female DW. Red-breasted black plumage, white skin, and mixed-colored ear lobe were observed in R x K crosses. Silver laced black breast, black plumage color, black colored skin, and black ear lobes were observed in K x R crosses. The results of the study indicated that reciprocal crossing between RIR and Kadaknath breeds improved egg shape index (SI), albumen index (AI), yolk weight (YW), albumen weight (AW), shell weight (SW), shell thickness (ST). The overall acceptance of crossbred birds' meat was higher when RIR female was used in a cross with Kadaknath. Deficit irrigation (DI) has been emerging as an important technique for enhancing crop water productivity (WP). However, advantage of DI under varying nitrogen (N) application rates remains unclear. Field experiments were conducted during 2012–2014 to investigate the impacts of six irrigation levels[FI (full irrigation), DI10, DI20, DI30, DI40 and DI50, with irrigation amount of 100, 90, 80, 70, 60 and 50% of ETc, respectively) and four N application rates (N0, N10, N20 and N30, with 0, 10, 20 and 30 kg N ha−1, respectively) on WP, yield, quality, and net economic return of peanut in hot arid region of India. We used Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method to obtain the optimal combination of irrigation and N rates. Both irrigation level and nitrogen dose had significant effects on yield and quality parameters examined in the study. Relative to FI, DI40 and DI50 significantly reduced yield (40.2–62.1%), economic benefit (70.8–118.5%), WP (8.2–33.0%), and kernel oil content (7.5–11.9%), but DI20 increased WP by 17.1% with only marginal reduction in economic benefit (2.6%), and yield (3.2%). Compared to N0, the N30 had 1.7, 1.1, and 1.6-folds increased yield, oil content in the kernel, and WP, respectively. Among all treatments, DI0N30 had the greatest yield and net return; DI20N30 had greatest WP and oil content in the kernel. TOPSIS analysis showed that DI20N30 was optimal in balancing of WP, yield, net return, and quality of peanut in northwestern arid India. The article presents a report on standardized precipitation index (SPI) for drought severity assessment of Almora, Uttarakhand, India. Topics include that SPI gives the accurate results by using only monthly rainfallas input even without using other climatic parameters like minimum and maximum temperature, humidity, evapo-transpiration and sunshine hours; and that this method gives better results when used for agricultural applications since it is simple and effective.

A thorough knowledge of the effects of land use systems (LUS) on the soil carbon pool and soil total nitrogen (STN) are critical to planning effective strategies for adaptation and mitigation in future scenarios of global climate and land use systems. This study conducted with the objectives of investigating soil carbon, nitrogen storage and carbon management index (CMI) in different LUS under middle Indian Himalayan ecosystem, four LUS: barren land (BL), cultivated land (CL), grass land (GL) and forest land (FL) were selected in Indian mid-Himalaya. A total of 111 composite soil samples [4 treatment (land use systems) 3- soil depths (0–15, 15–30 and 30–45 cm) and 8, 11, 8 and 10 replication for BL, CL, GL and FL systems, respectively] were collected for laboratory analyses. Forest land use system has the highest Walkley-Black Carbon (WBC), total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), carbon and nitrogen (C and N)-storage and CMI values while barren land use system having least amount of WBC, TC, TN, CN-storage and CMI. Land use system had minimum effect on non-labile carbon (NLC), lability of carbon (LC), lability index (LI) and carbon pool index (CPI) of the ecosystem. Moreover, TC and TN were increase in the grass and forest land as compared to barren and cultivated land. The TC concentration was highly correlated with TN (R 2  = 0.88, p < 0.01) and soil N-sequestration (R 2  = 0.93, p < 0.01) concentrations. However, carbon storage and NSP relationship (p < 0.01) was NSP = 0.0916× + 0.7088 (R 2  = 0.93). Overall results indicated that LUS and C-storage were associated with N-storage and CMI. These results suggest restoration of degraded barren and cultivated land to grass and forest land and decrease in intensity of land use could increase carbon and nitrogen storage in the study area as well as other similar mountainous regions of Indian mid-Himalayas. Rapid decline in groundwater table due to excessive withdrawal of water for irrigation has been posing a serious threat to sustainable agricultural production in hot arid region of India. Alternative cropping systems having low irrigation requirement have been proposed to resolve unsustainable groundwater use but trade-off with other dimensions such as yield, profitability, and environmental impacts is not well-documented. An integrated analysis of amount of groundwater use, productivity, profitability, resource-use efficiency (RUE), and environmental impacts of three cluster bean-based cropping systems [conventional cluster bean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba)–wheat (Triticum aestivum) (CB–W), and two alternative cropping systems, namely cluster bean-Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) (CB–IM) and cluster bean–blond psyllium (Plantago ovata) (CB–BP)] under different soil management practices [two tillage types, i.e., conventional (CT), and deep tillage (DT); and three farmyard manure (FYM) application rates, i.e., 0, 5, 10 Mg ha-1] was carried out. Based on a three-year field experiment, compared to conventional CB–W, alternative cropping systems produced 28.6–47.4 % lower seed yield, but enhanced economic returns (7.6–31.1 %), while reduced amount of irrigation (− 27.9 to − 37.2 %), energy (− 22.4 to − 37.0 %), and nutrient (− 17.4 to − 46.1 %) used, global warming potential (− 20.2 to − 45.9 %) and greenhouse gas intensity (− 27.3 to − 57.7 %). Alternative cropping systems saved 1.87–2.50 × 103 m3 per year per hectare of groundwater than conventional cropping systems. Soil management practices influenced agro-economic and environmental dimensions of cropping systems. Deep tillage (DT) enhanced yield (14.0 %), economic profit (18.8 %), RUE (13.2 %, 13.8 % and 8.5 % for nutrient, water and energy use efficiency, respectively). Addition of FYM increased yield (up to 23.0 %), economic net return (up to 21.8 %), RUE (up to 22.7 %, 16.5 %, 91.0 % in water, energy and nutrient use efficiency), and reduced global warming potential (up to − 7.9 %). The CB-BP cropping system with DT and FYM addition offered the best balance of yield, profit, saving of irrigation water, energy and nutrient, while minimizing GWP. This study provides empirical evidence of the opportunities for alternative cropping systems which balance the multiple objectives of sustainable groundwater use, farmer profitability and environmental sustainability for arid region of India. Introduction: Burn injuries are a serious public health problem. In our study we have identified different epidemiological factors based on 10 years of our experience at a burn unit in central India and recommend some strategies to prevent burn injuries. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective analysis (2001-2010) of database from burn unit of S.S. Medical College, Rewa, India. Results: 2499 patients with burn injury were analysed. 66.8% and 38.2% patients were females and males respectively, with a median age of 25 years. Flame (80.1%) was most common cause, home (96%) was most common place, traditional Indian stove (28.8%), kerosene lamp (26.7%), hot liquid (12.2%) and kerosene stove (10.4%) were common causes. Median Total Body Surface Area (TBSA) burn was 40.0%; females had significantly greater (P < 0.001) burn than males (median 50% vs 26.0%). High mortality (40.3%) seen; female sex (OR 3.22, 95% CI 2.65-3.92); young age (15-29 year) (OR 3.48, 95% CI 2.45-4.94); flame burn (OR 12.9, 95% CI 1.69-98.32); suicidal burn OR 6.82 95%CI 4.44-10.48) and TBSA > 76% (OR 3099, 95%CI 1302-7380) were significant risk factors for death. Median hospital stays was 8 days; shorter hospital stays seen among TBSA burn > 76% (2 days), suicidal intent (4 days), and those who expired (4 days). Septicemia (45.8%) and burn shock (41%) were the major cause for death. Conclusions: Cooking and lighting equipments are major cause of burn injury among females and young age group. Equipment modification to improve safety features and public awareness programs are necessary to reduce burn incidents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A long-term field study was commenced in 1995-96 to assess the impact of continuous application of inorganic fertilizers and organic manure on sustainability, productivity and chemical indicators of soil quality in an irrigated soybean-wheat cropping system (SWCS). Six treatments comprised inorganic fertilizers (NPK) and manure (M) either alone or in combination. Soybean yield indicated declining trend −22.50, −56.0 and −25.0 kg ha −1  year −1 under unfertilized control, sole nitrogen and NPK treatments, respectively while addition of organic manure resulted in a positive yield trend. Plot receiving NPK had positive yield trend of 118 kg ha −1  year −1 in wheat crop. The highest positive yield trend was obtained with manure (M) and NPK treatment, values being 17.60 and 191 kg ha −1  year −1 in soybean and wheat, respectively. Significantly (p < 0.05) the highest grain yield was also observed under the MNPK treatment, soybean and wheat reporting 2.56 and 4.31 Mg ha −1 , respectively which was ∼ 30 and 25% higher than NPK treatment, respectively. Significantly higher yield sustainability was observed in the plots receiving manure either alone (0.77 and 0.51) or in combination with N fertilizer (0.79 and 0.79) or with NPK, MNPK (0.89 and 0.92) compared to the treatment, which did not receive the manure in both soybean and wheat crops. Due to continuous cropping and fertilization over the years, available N increased from initial values in all the plots except CK (−3.89 and −3.59%) under 0–15 and 15–30 cm soil depths. Negative trends for available P were observed in all treatments except MNPK over the years of continuous cropping. A significantly decreasing trend for the available K was observed under CK, N, NPK and M treatments, whereas a significant accumulation was estimated under MN and MNPK treated plots in both soil depths. Significantly higher accumulation of available N, P and K were observed under MNPK treatment compared to the rest of the treatments. The treatment MNPK had the highest soil DTPA-extractable Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu after 21-years of cropping and fertilization. The sustainable yield index (SYI) values indicated that soybean yield was more sustainable compared to the wheat. The SYI and grain yield of soybean had significantly higher correlation with available N, P, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu. Soil available N had significantly higher values of coefficient of regression (r 2 ) for wheat (0.98; p = 0.001 and 0.97; p = 0.001) compared to soybean (0.74; p = 0.029 and 0.74; p = 0.027) under 0–15 and 15–30 cm soil depths, respectively. The SYI was strongly positively correlated with chemical indicators of soil quality. Livestock is an integral part of the hill ecosystem but due to the acute shortage of good sources of nutritious fodder during winter season, farmers face serious problems for livestock farming. The agri-horticulture system is an important agricultural practice where crops are grown under different fruit trees. It is widely practiced in the hilly ecosystem. The dual purpose wheat crop is capable of providing nutritious green fodder during the lean period mainly during the month of December-January, when it is most needed, with no detrimental impact on the eventual grain and straw yields. The VL Gehun 829 is one of the potential dual purpose wheat variety developed by the ICAR- Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan which yielded 2.30 to 4.17 t ha−1 grain, 2.63 to 3.77 t ha-1 green fodder and 4.80 to 7.88 t ha-1 dry fodder under different fruit trees. Proximate composition of green fodder varied significantly under different fruit trees. Nutrient content of wheat green forage varied in dry matter (73.67–76.10%), crude protein (21.85–26.47%), crude ash (3.0–4.5%), crude fat (4.83–6.57%), crude fiber (13.10–15.87%), nitrogen free extractants (24.8–28.6%), total carbohydrate (38.37–43.21%) and total digestible nutrient (56.25–65.26%). Thus, this wheat cultivar (VL Gehun 829) can increase availability of nutritious green fodder for livestock rearing, which in turn can improve the prosperity of the hill farmers. Determination of urea in milk is inevitable in the dairy industry for the quality control processes. A simple and cost-effective method was developed to determine the concentration of urea in milk by silver nanoparticles (uncapped and citrate capped) and ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy. The developed nanoparticles were characterized by UV–Vis, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and a colour change was noted from yellow to blue upon nanoparticles interaction with urea. A predictive model was developed using the spectral data from the analyzed samples. The developed model was able to measure urea concentration (between 6 mg/dL to 90 mg/dL) in milk with the coefficient of determination (R2) more than0.90 and was validated through para -dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (DMAB) method suggested by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The average accuracy and sample percent relative standard deviation (% RSD) obtained through the developed method + model ranged from 62.67 to 121.85% and 0.11–1.21%. The regression model for uncapped nanoparticles was found to be best-fitted (having R2 = 0.92, average accuracy 103.75 ± 8.69%), with higher closeness to the values obtained for urea by FSSAI-DMAB method. Context: Hypothyroidism is associated with reversible decline in kidney function as measured by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). eGFR and proteinuria are the most important markers for clinical assessment of kidney function. Though hypothyroidism is associated with proteinuria in cross-sectional data, the impact of treatment on proteinuria is unknown., Objective: This study explores the effect of thyroid hormone replacement therapy on eGFR and 24-hour urine protein excretion in patients with severe primary hypothyroidism., Design and Participants: This study was a prospective, observational cohort study in adults with severe primary hypothyroidism (serum thyrotropin [TSH] > 50 µIU/mL). Individuals with preexisting or past kidney disease, kidney or urinary tract abnormalities, calculi or surgery, diabetes mellitus, or hypertension were excluded. The participants received thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Thyroid functions, eGFR, 24-hour urine protein excretion, and biochemical parameters were measured at baseline and 3 months., Setting: This study took place at a single center, a tertiary care referral and teaching hospital., Results: Of 44 enrolled participants, 43 completed 3 months of follow-up. At 3 months, serum TSH levels decreased and thyroxine levels increased (P < .001 for both). Significant increases in eGFR (mean difference, 18.25 ± 19.49 mL/min/1.73 m2; 95% CI, 12.25 to 24.25, P < .001) and declines in 24-hour urine protein excretion (mean difference, -68.39 ± 125.89 mg/day; 95% CI, -107.14 to -29.65, P = .001) were observed. Imbalanced potassium (K) fertilization in agricultural fields has led to considerable negative impacts and remains to be the foremost challenge for maize production in India-Gangetic region. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, particularly potassium solubilizing rhizobacteria (KSR), could serve as inoculants and a promising strategy for enhancement of plant absorption of K hence reducing dependency on chemical fertilizers. Maize seeds were microbiolized for 30 min with KSR suspensions. In the present study, the use of chemical fertilizers along with Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain OPVS10 showed pronounced beneficial effect on growth and yield attributes in maize. There was a significant difference among different parameters studied when varying doses of K and KSR strains were applied. Results showed that the combined application of KSR strain OPVS10 with 100% RDK (recommended dose of K) was most effective in modulating growth, physio-biochemical, and yield attributes in maize thus could be regarded as a promising alternative to mineral K-fertilization. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that 100-grain weight and grain yield were the most important properties to improve the sustainable growth of maize. Therefore, these KSR strains have different mechanisms for modulating various activities in maize plants. Results suggested that the synergistic application of KSR strain OPVS10 with 100% RDK can be used for optimized breeding, screening, and nutrient assimilation in maize crop. Hence, this eco-friendly approach may be one of the efficient methods for reducing dependency on chemicals, which pose adverse effects on human health directly and indirectly.
