The corrosion behaviour and biofouling characteristics of structural steel coupons at three different locations in the Gulf of Mannar were studied over a period of 2 years. Oyster fouling was predominant at Tuticorin open sea, while barnacle fouling was more pronounced at Mandapam and Tuticorin harbour. Among the three locations, Tuticorin open sea showed a markedly higher biomass, particularly after 12 and 18 months. The extent of crevice corrosion caused by hard foulers was more pronounced at Tuticorin harbour when compared to that at the other two locations. The corrosion rate of the structural steel coupons for 24 months was in the order, Mandapam > Tuticorin harbor > Tuticorin open sea. The loss in tensile strength at 12 and 24 months was in the order, Tuticorin open sea > Tuticorin harbor > Mandapam. The corrosion behaviour of the structural steel coupons was strongly influenced by the variations in the biofouling assemblage at the three different coastal locations.

The coal based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) route for secondary steel production is now a preferred choice in India. Steel making is invariably associated with emission of air pollutants into the environment. Air quality monitoring was carried out in Winter, Summer and Rainy seasons of 2008 in eight monitoring stations in the work zone and five stations in the residential zone of an Integrated Steel Industry located in Orissa state, India. Four air quality parameters i.e. SPM, RSPM, SO2 and NO2 were monitored. Mean SPM and RSPM values were found to be significantly high (p < 0.01) at stations nearer to source in both work zone and residential zone .The highest average SPM and RSPM values in the work zone recorded were 4869 microg/m3 and 1420 microg/m3 and in the residential zone 294 microg/m3 and 198 microg/m3 respectively. No significant difference in the SO2 and NO2 levels was observed between the work and residential zones. In general, the values of air pollutants were highest in Winter followed by Summer and Rainy season. SPM and RSPM values exceeded the National Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) in both the residential and work zones.

Microbiologically influenced corrosion is a problem commonly encountered in facilities in the oil and gas industries. The present study describes bacterial enumeration and identification in diesel and naphtha pipelines located in the northwest and southwest region in India, using traditional cultivation technique and 16S rDNA gene sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA sequences of the isolates was carried out, and the samples obtained from the diesel and naphtha-transporting pipelines showed the occurrence of 11 bacterial species namely Serratia marcescens ACE2, Bacillus subtilis AR12, Bacillus cereus ACE4, Pseudomonas aeruginosa AI1, Klebsiella oxytoca ACP, Pseudomonas stutzeri AP2, Bacillus litoralis AN1, Bacillus sp., Bacillus pumilus AR2, Bacillus carboniphilus AR3, and Bacillus megaterium AR4. Sulfate-reducing bacteria were not detected in samples from both pipelines. The dominant bacterial species identified in the petroleum pipeline samples were B. cereus and S. marcescens in the diesel and naphtha pipelines, respectively. Therefore, several types of bacteria may be involved in biocorrosion arising from natural biofilms that develop in industrial facilities. In addition, localized (pitting) corrosion of the pipeline steel in the presence of the consortia was observed by scanning electron microscopy analysis. The potential role of each species in biofilm formation and steel corrosion is discussed.

The present study enlightens the role of Bacillus cereus ACE4 on biodegradation of commercial corrosion inhibitors (CCI) and the corrosion process on API 5LX steel. Bacillus cereus ACE4, a dominant facultative aerobic species was identified by 16S rDNA sequence analysis, which was isolated from the corrosion products of refined diesel-transporting pipeline in North West India. The effect of CCI on the growth of bacterium and its corrosion inhibition efficiency were investigated. Corrosion inhibition efficiency was studied by rotating cage test and the nature of biodegradation of corrosion inhibitors was also analyzed. This isolate has the capacity to degrade the aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbon present in the corrosion inhibitors. The degraded products of corrosion inhibitors and bacterial activity determine the electrochemical behavior of API 5LX steel.

Mild steel (MS), stainless steel (SS) and copper (Cu) test panels were immersed in the surface water of Dona Paula Bay over a period of 15 d. During the immersion period data on the hydrography, nutrients and suspended matter were also collected. The suspended matter and fouling products on the MS, SS and Cu panels were analysed for organic carbon (OC), organic nitrogen (ON), chlorophyll a (chl a), protein and carbohydrate concentration and composition, and the dry weight (DW) was recorded. Compared to suspended matter, the chemical and biochemical components of the fouling products showed strong temporal and substratum related differences. The microfouling biomass (as DW, OC, ON, chl a and protein) on all the test panels generally increased over the period of immersion. Carbohydrates were more abundant in the suspended matter whereas fouling products were enriched in proteins. The contribution of protein-carbon to the total carbon increased over the period of immersion for the microfouling products on MS and SS whilst it did not show a consistent trend on Cu. Whereas, the carbohydrate-carbon contribution to the total carbon increased for the fouling products on MS, it did not exhibit a particular pattern on SS or Cu over the period of immersion. Capillary gas chromatographic analysis showed the presence of glucose, galactose, mannose, arabinose, xylose fucose and ribose in both the fouling products and suspended matter. However, there were differences in the relative distribution of these monosaccharides in the suspended matter and the fouling products. Glucose was the most abundant monosaccharide, which showed strong temporal variations in suspended matter. In contrast, the wt % concentrations of individual monosaccharides showed large temporal differences for the fouling products, which were strongly influenced by the period of immersion and the type of test substratum. Glucose and fucose were relatively more abundant in the fouling products on SS and Cu, whilst glucose was the most abundant monosaccharide on MS. The monosaccharide and chemical composition data suggest strong temporal changes in the composition of the fouling products.

Leachability of lead by tap water and tamarind solution from Indian pressure cookers while cooking with and without a safety valve is studied. Lead contamination of food by cookers is not very high when compared to the daily intake of lead from various food items consumed by the Indian community. However, looking at the very wide range of lead levels leached from various brands of pressure cookers, it certainly seems possible to keep the lead contamination to the minimum by proper choice of the materials used in the manufacture of these pressure cookers. The rubber gasket, which is a very important component of any pressure cooker, contains the maximum lead concentration; the safety valve is another important source leading to lead contamination of cooked food.
