The COVID-19 pandemic has not only posed alarming health challenges but also exacerbated the scenarios of intimate partner violence (IPV) against women globally. While global studies indicate a conspicuous increase in IPV during COVID-19 lockdowns; Indian studies exhibit mixed evidence. This ambiguity in world's most populous country underscores a greater need to examine the nexus between exposure to COVID-19 and IPV using a large nationally representative sample of India. This study employs an 'intent-to-treat (ITT) framework' approach to assess the effect of COVID-19 exposure on IPV for women with "exposure (or cases)" compared to those with "no exposure (or controls)". Using data from National Family Health Survey-5, the study employs a methodology comprising three stages: first, descriptive and bivariate statistics that characterize the sample population. Second, a multivariable logistic regression model was employed to examine the influence of COVID-19 on IPV reporting. Finally, the study validated its main findings using the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) tool with an ITT framework. The result from multiple statistical approaches indicates a reduction in IPV during COVID-19 — primarily suggesting significant under-reporting of domestic violence cases in the data collected during its exposure period. This underreporting remains consistent across diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. The study advances that reduction in the incidents of IPV among women surveyed after exposure to COVID-19 compared to their counterparts can be attributable to underreporting or greater socio-emotional cohesion among partners during menaces like COVID-19. While the under-reporting of cases can also be attributed to the lack of accessibility to peer groups and social and community networks, who often help women to identify and report IPV. Further, it can also possible due to the reduction in alcohol consumption and greater dependency of female on male partners due to jobloss during COVID-19 lockdown. This study, thereby, underscores the need for innovative survey tools to capture Violence Against Women (VAW) in general and IPV in particular during an extraordinary situation like COVID-19. This essay examines the influence of the informal economy on the reach of government interventions in public health crises. It reports the results of an analysis of the self‐reported suspension of business operations during the pandemic, as well as a district‐level analysis of the changing patterns in community movement in response to the lockdown in India in March 2020. We find that informal establishments were less likely to suspend their operations and that the prevalence of the informal economy weakened the behavioral response of the communities to social distancing measures. In addition to bringing to light an understudied facet of the societal response to the COVID‐19 pandemic, this result demonstrates the importance of economic institutions for understanding public governance. Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a significant disruption of all healthcare services. Tuberculosis (TB) services were also affected by the COVID-19 pandemic policies. Therefore, this study was planned to observe whether TB services and treatment outcome were affected in pre-COVID, COVID, and post-COVID eras among TB patients. Materials and Methods: Secondary data analysis was carried out from the data obtained from District Tuberculosis Centre. Comparison of TB care data includes notification, diagnosis, treatment services, and outcome for the pre-COVID, COVID, and post-COVID periods. Results: TB notifications and diagnostic services were significantly hampered during the COVID-19 period as compared to pre-COVID and post-COVID periods (P < 0.05). However, in those diagnosed with TB, treatment was initiated timely and regular follow-up was done by health care workers to ensure treatment adherence, and hence, more cure rate was reported in the study. High mortality during COVID-19 period was found. Conclusion: TB care was significantly restrained during COVID-19 pandemic, and further reclamation of services occurred during the declining phase of COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Excessive alcohol consumption is the underlying cause of mortality and morbidity. In Tamil Nadu, South India, alcohol is available through government-regulated outlets, and during the lockdown, there was a ban on the sale of alcohol. This study was designed to explore the change in drinking pattern among known alcohol dependants as well as family and communities' response to the change. Methods: A mixed-methods study was conducted with quantitative data collection followed by in-depth interviews with alcohol dependants and their spouses and focus group discussions with family members and community leaders. Results: We found a significant change in abstinence from drinking among 68% surveyed. Coping mechanism most often used was distraction and involving self in household chores. Most spouses reported that the decreased access to alcohol improved family life during the lockdown. Leaders expressed poor societal ownership of alcoholism as a problem. And once the restrictions were lifted, a rebound phenomenon was observed. Conclusion: This study provides evidence of positive change in improved family life and decreased violence owing to the decrease in alcohol consumption. The community's inability to support reforming alcoholics is an important finding of the study. We recommend interventions to support them and also policies to restrict alcohol access. Objective: This study aimed to examine the potential changes in substance use disorder (SUD) admission rates before and after the lockdown in a major addiction center in Saudi Arabia. Method: This retrospective cohort study extracted data from Al-Amal Hospital Electronic Health Record in the city of Dammam, Eastern region of Saudi Arabia. A total of 2,426 cases included in the analysis for patients who received services from the SUD treatment programs from 1/1/2015 to 31/12/2021. Results: Before the pandemic, there was a consistent increase in the admission rates for patients with substance use disorder. The highest proportion of increase were among unemployed, young, newly admitted patients. During lockdown, there was nearly a 70% reduction in SUDs-related admission rate. The age group 18–25 was seven-times more likely to be admitted for SUD after the lockdown. Amphetamine-related admissions were two times more likely to be admitted after the lockdown (Odds ratio (OR) 2.04; confidence interval (CI) 95%[1.64, 2.54]). Conclusions: There was nearly 70% reduction in SUDs admission rates during the lockdown. After the lockdown, a significant proportional increase in amphetamine use disorder admissions was observed mostly among the patients age group 18–24 with a history of a previous admissions. Determining populations at risk for high health care utilization is crucial in building a comprehensive and effective prevention strategy. Therefore, the need to adopt coordinated strategies and innovative, comprehensive approaches to benefit individuals with SUD is imperative to face the increased rate of SUD related admissions. The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, marked by stringent lockdowns and reduced human activity, resulted in a significant decrease in air pollutant emissions. This study investigates the impact of these altered atmospheric conditions on human health by focusing on Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, toluene, and meta-xylene (BTX), comparing data from before, during, and after the pandemic lockdowns. The objectives were to assess changes in Total VOC (TVOC) concentrations and to evaluate the associated health risks, particularly Lifetime Cancer Risk (LCR) from benzene exposure. Analysis of the data revealed a notable reduction in TVOCs during the 2020 lockdown, with average concentrations of 12.15 ± 20.49 µg/m3 in 2019, 8.08 ± 5.50 µg/m3 in 2020, and 5.12 ± 7.56 µg/m3 in 2021. LCR values also fluctuated, with averages of 1.12 × 10−5, 1.23 × 10−5, and 6.91 × 10−6 or pre-pandemic, during-pandemic, and post-pandemic periods, respectively. The findings highlight the potential effectiveness of lockdowns in reducing air pollution and underscore the need for continued, targeted environmental policies to improve public health. Background: A novel COVID-19 has spread worldwide and created a big threat for the public and their daily life. Due to its rapid transmission and the mortality rate, governments across the world had created many restrictions such as social isolation which leads to economic crisis that also leads to the source of fear, stress, anxiety, and mood conditions and negatively affects people's mental health (Praveen et al., 2021). Although the initiatives were prepared, the coronavirus may also cause mental defects. These defects also affected the medical students, since they were the backbone and the future of public health, hence the study would describe the quality of well-being by different domains. Materials and Methods: The study was designed by the questionnaire based on the World Health Organization Quality of life-BREL, Subjective Well-Being Inventory (SWBI), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) research tool. A total of 288 students were participated in the study. Results: A total of 288 medical students were participated in the study, according Cronbach Alpha method, all three domains had obtained a value of above 0.7, and the descriptive analysis showed the highest score of about 67.12 with physical activity. According to the BAI, 84% of medical students with low anxiety, the study also investigates the quality of well-being and compared with gender, with religion, with family type, place of living, religions, and among family's monthly income. The results of the study were statistically defined, and it has a significant relationship with environment and SWBI. Conclusion: The quality of well-being was assessed on medical students and the study revealed that there is no impact with gender, religion, year of study, and family's monthly income. The COVID-19 pandemic-induced lockdown has indisputably affected the aquaculture industry across the globe. India imposed a nationwide lockdown to contain the outbreak of COVID-19 that disrupted normalcy and economic activities. The fisheries sector was also highly affected. Hence, a study was conducted from July to December 2020 to understand the stakeholders' perception of the impact of COVID-19 lockdown, wherein 517 stakeholders participated (online) in the first stage. The policy reforms suggested by the stakeholders were referred to the fisheries experts in the second stage for prioritization towards implementation. Data analysis depicted that a majority (81%) of the stakeholders were aware of COVID-19 lockdown impacts on their businesses. Due to this unprecedented lockdown, labour availability was hampered, transport facilities were fully halted and access to inputs like seed, feed, and advisory were largely affected. Importantly, all stakeholders unanimously adduced to the uncertainty over the future of the fisheries sector. Moreover, fishery experts feel that enabling policies for the promotion of awareness, appropriate training, and transparency in the implementation of schemes, credit facilities, and price regulation can have a massive positive impact. This paper empirically explores the impact of COVID‐19 pandemic and its accompanying lockdown on adolescent girls' and women's access to sanitary pads in India. We have used the National Health Mission's Health Management Information System (NHM‐HMIS) data for the study, which provides data on pads' distribution on a district level. The empirical strategy used in the study exploits the variation of districts into red, orange, and green zones as announced by the Indian Government. To understand how lockdown severity impacts access to sanitary pads, we used a difference‐in‐difference (DID) empirical strategy to study sanitary pads' access in red and orange zones compared to green zones. We find clear evidence of the impact of lockdown intensity on the provision of sanitary pads, with districts with the strictest lockdown restrictions suffering the most. Our study highlights how sanitary pads distribution was overlooked during the pandemic, leaving girls and women vulnerable to managing their menstrual needs. Thus, there is a requirement for strong policy to focus on the need to keep sanitary pads as part of the essential goods to ensure the needs of the girls and women are met even in the midst of a pandemic, central to an inclusive response. This study uses data from a survey of micro, small, and medium enterprises in India to document the impact of Covid-19 containment lockdowns on firms, their responses, and adaptation strategies. We find that the profits and sales declined substantially for the majority of firms. Temporary closures, pay cuts, and temporary lay-offs were the key measures utilized by firms to cope with the shock. Firms did not have adequate liquidity to last beyond six months, albeit the majority expected the pandemic to be over within that period. Micro-enterprises were the most fragile. Using a retrospective panel and matching-based difference-in-differences strategy, we show that exporting firms were able to cushion themselves from the domestic market contractions resulting from the lockdown. This article outlines the structural barriers to abortions in India, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing lockdowns. It discusses the limits to access inherent within India's abortion law, strict state-imposed pandemic management measures, the unequal public healthcare system, and resultant systemic coercion of pregnant persons to approach courts to seek abortions. It reviews abortion-related cases to argue that the judiciary's neglect of its responsibilities during the pandemic has been mirrored in its lack of willingness to realize the reproductive rights of pregnant persons requiring abortions during and after the pandemic. Cases are examined using the legal indeterminacy framework to understand how abortion laws overlook pregnant persons' autonomy. These laws have relied on stereotypes, betraying the underlying paternalistic and protectionist rationale of the judiciary. The judiciary has assumed the role of ultimate arbiter in determining what constitutes a "good" or "bad" abortion and who is deemed deserving of abortion access. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper aims to determine the implications of Covid-19 on the livelihood of marine fishermen. It gives a concrete picture of how vulnerable communities like marine fishermen are affected due to the lockdown policies. The paper examines these communities' present status and the extent of vulnerability during the post-Covid period. Design/methodology/approach: The study uses an exploratory research design to find the solution to the research problem. 298 samples were collected and analysed within a sustainable livelihood theoretical framework. The scope of the study is limited to marine fishermen in Kerala, residing in six districts out of the nine coastal districts. The impact of the lockdown on income was analysed using paired t-test and results linked with the theory. Findings: The study has done an empirical analysis for three periods: before lockdown, lockdown and after lockdown, to identify the impact of lockdown on marine fishermen. The study's significant findings are that these fishermen's livelihood is at risk during the post-lockdown period, and many families are moving into a "debt-trap". Research limitations/implications: Policymakers can develop appropriate policy strategies to enhance the livelihood assets of vulnerable communities to include them in a sustainable framework. Originality/value: Only a few studies are highlighting the impact of Covid-19 on vulnerable communities in India. The effects of climate change on the marine ecosystem are already endangering marine fisher folks' livelihoods. In this light, it is vital to study the extent of the impact of income shock on the livelihood assets of marine fishermen due to the lockdown policy implemented in the State to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Background: The pandemic has put at risk the social and emotional development of children on account of the paucity of arenas for social interaction. This study from Kerala, India was conducted to assess the resilience factors, behavioural concerns, psychological distress symptoms among the children aged 3 to 5 years. We also tried to look into the lost opportunities that could have aided the social and emotional development of children like peer interaction, child care hours. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted among the children aged 3 to 5 years. A total of 535 children attending the immunisation clinics were enrolled by consecutive sampling. Devereux Early Childhood Assessment P2 (DECA P2) questionnaire was used to assess the levels of resilient factors and behavioural concerns in the study population. Results: We observed a high proportion of children in the area of need category of protective factors under DECA P2. The proportion of children falling under area of concern was 64.5%, 49%, 68.4% for attachment/relationship, self-regulation, and initiative respectively. 24.9% study subjects have a behavioural concern score that puts them in the area of need category. The logistic regression model we created identified 'Male Gender,' 'Mothers could spend only less time for child care' and 'electronic devices used as pacifier' as significant predictors for belonging to Area of need Behavioural Concerns T score category. Conclusion: A large proportion of children aged between 3 to 5 years with reported behavioural concerns and lack of protective factors for socioemotional development. This can be attributed partly to the ongoing pandemic and its associated restrictions. The increased child care hours invested by parents or grandparents could have sized down the full impact that the pandemic would have had on the socio emotional development of the child. Background: Clinical presentation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mimics many respiratory ailments. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the psychosocial impact of COVID-19 and subsequent state-imposed lockdown on patients presenting with respiratory complaints. Methodology: This was a prospective study on 82 outpatients at a tertiary care institute from North India during the period of strict lockdown. Baseline assessment was conducted using socioclinical pro forma, COVID-19-related questionnaire, lockdown-related questionnaire, and General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12) Hindi version. Reassessment was done twice: immediately and 41–45 days after relaxation of strict lockdown. Quality of life (QOL) at first and second follow-up versus the prelockdown times (Score A and Score C) and first follow-up versus unlockdown (Score B) was noted. Results: Psychological distress was experienced in 45.1% and 17.1% of patients at baseline and first follow-up (P < 0.001). Clinical symptoms, worry for COVID-19, negative thoughts, and total score (lockdown) decreased significantly at first follow-up. The mean C score was significantly better than the mean A score (P < 0.001). Baseline and follow-up psychological distress was significantly more in those with poorer values of total score (lockdown) and its domains. On logistic regression, follow-up GHQ-12 correlated positively with Domain 2 (P = 0.027; odds ratio [OR] = 0.7) and "worry for COVID" (P = 0.017; OR = 10.136). Conclusion: Persons presenting with respiratory complaints and experiencing "worry for COVID-19" at the start of the lockdown were more likely to also experience psychological distress, which decreased significantly but persisted for prolonged periods even after relaxation in lockdown. Policymakers, while indulging in mental health planning in pandemics, should not ignore this issue of development and perpetuation of psychological distress in such otherwise "psychologically normal" individuals. Introduction: Medico-legal post-mortem examinations are performed as mandatory legal procedures for establishing the cause of death for people dying in sudden, suspicious and unnatural circumstances. When COVID-19 came to India and Indian government declared a complete lockdown, the autopsy profile is changed. Aims & Objectives: Demographic study and effect of lockdown on autopsy profile. Methods: The present study is a retrospective study carried out in the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, GRMC, Gwalior Madhya Pradesh during the period of 1st January 2020 to 31st December 2020 and analysis of a total of 2170 cases, brought to the mortuary for medico-legal autopsy examination. Later on, the effect of lockdown is evaluated on the autopsy profile. Result: The majority of victims were male 1571 (72.4%) cases and female 599 (27.6%) cases. The maximum number of post-mortem done in the age group 21-40 years was 1131 (52.12 %) cases and the minimum in the age group 0-10 year were 56 (02.58%) cases. Manners of death due to natural causes were 170 (07.8%) cases and unnatural 2000 (92.20%) cases. The Indian government declared a complete lockdown on the evening of 24 March 2020 for 21 days, which was further extended with some relaxation. Due to this event; the least number of autopsies was done in April (4.5%) which increased to its normal pattern by the end of June (10.6%). During this period i.e. April; there was a slight decrease in male victims (64.3%) and a slight increase in female victims (35.7%). Conclusion: This study was conducted to determine the effect of lockdown on the autopsy profile. Background: The number of patients with diarrheal diseases admitted to the hospital was reduced during the COVID-19 lockdown. Following the relaxation of the lockdown, admissions of nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) infection showed a two-fold rise compared to pre-COVID-19 years. This retrospective study aimed to detect the incidence of NTS in the pre-COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 outbreak periods, along with describing the antibiogram and comorbid conditions of the patients. Materials and Methods: Using a retrospective design, from January 2015 to December 2022, we studied stool samples for the presence of NTS. Antibiogram with ampicillin, co-trimoxazole, ceftriaxone, chloramphenicol, and ciprofloxacin were studied. The presence of comorbid conditions was noted. Results: We examined 2312 and 937 stool samples collected during the pre-COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 outbreak period, respectively. The number of samples collected during the outbreak (2020) was 273. During the pre-COVID-19 period (2015–2019), the average annual isolation rate of NTS was 5.63%. During the lockdown of 2020, the corresponding rate was 5.49%. The isolation rate showed a significant rise (11.45%) during the relaxation of the lockdown (P < 0.001). No significant change in resistance to antibiotics other than ciprofloxacin was noted in the present study. Malignancy was the leading comorbid condition (11.91%) followed by chronic liver diseases (10.31%). Conclusions: A significant rise in NTS diarrheal cases was detected following the COVID-19 outbreak. During this period, people were attending more celebrations and feasts. Foreign institutional investment has played a significant role in India's recent economic progress. During the 2008 global financial crisis, the influence of foreign institutional investment on India's economic growth was uneven. With this context in mind, the objective of this study is to analyze the influence of COVID-19, COVID-19 vaccines administered and lockdown stringency on the inflow and outflow of foreign institutional investment in India, using the daily data from January 30, 2020 to January 24, 2022. To achieve the objective of the present study, we have employed the wavelet coherence approach, and Breitung–Candelon spectral granger causality approaches. The outcomes of the wavelet coherence approach show that foreign institutional investment has responded negatively to both the COVID-19 outbreak and the lockdown stringency. Interesting, the response of foreign institutional investment was observed to be hostile towards COVID-19 vaccines; which underscores wait and see strategy of investors during the sample period. The frequency-domain causality approach affirms the lead–lag relationship between COVID-19, COVID-19 vaccines administered, lockdown stringency, and foreign institutional investment. We conclude that COVID-19 and lockdown are predictive factors for future foreign institutional investment at different frequencies. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on human health and has led to social isolation and health implications. In order to optimize public health, it is important to understand the role of social and behavioral sciences, including dietary patterns and lifestyle changes. This study aimed to identify the effect of lockdown on dietary patterns and its association with Body Mass Index (BMI) and lifestyle changes in the older Indian population (aged 60 and above).The study was conducted using an online web-based Google form and 674 participants took part over a one-month period. The k-means algorithm was used to identify non-overlapping dietary patterns and logistic regression was employed to determine the factors associated with changes in dietary patterns. Three dietary patterns were identified: pro-healthy, constant, and unhealthy.During the study, 33.1% of the participants decreased their physical activity while 61.6% increased their screen usage. 26.7% consumed a pro-healthy dietary pattern, while 61.9% consumed an unhealthy dietary pattern. Women reported lower consumption of the pro-healthy pattern (23.8%) and higher consumption of the unhealthy dietary pattern (64.5%) compared to men (30.6% and 58.3%, respectively). Adherence to the pro-healthy dietary pattern was positively associated with age. Participants with a lower BMI were less likely to consume a pro-healthy dietary pattern [AOR: 0.02; CI: 0.01, 0.2]. Those who increased their physical activity were more likely to follow the pro-healthy dietary pattern [AOR: 6.49; CI: 0.76, 55.76]. Those who had less sleep [AOR: 10.22; CI: 1.97, 52.92] and more screen time [AOR: 7.61; CI: 3.28, 17.62] had a higher risk of following an unhealthy dietary pattern.The lockdown had a significant impact on dietary patterns and was associated with unhealthy lifestyle outcomes among older Indian adults. In March 2020, after the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), all the countries worldwide imposed a series of restrictions on public movement, and social, cultural, and industrial activities to prevent the spread of the disease. India was no exception. As a precautionary measure, the Indian government announced a complete lockdown from zero hours on 25th March 2020. With it, a drastic reduction in seismic noise level was observed in the short- period band (0.1–1 s). The short-period band is mostly dominated by anthropogenic or cultural noise due to human activities. In this study, we have analyzed the impact of lockdown on seismic noise level using the power spectral density (PSD) at 14 broadband seismometers installed at different locations in Eastern Dharwar region, south-eastern India. The PSDs were estimated before and after the lockdown to explore the noise level variation associated with the reduced human activity and mobility. Due to the lockdowns, the reduction in the seismic noise is observed in the level of 2–20 dB. Also, the obtained noise reduction is more in stations located in rural areas than the stations located in urban areas. COVID-19 started in 2019 and spread rapidly throughout the world. The pandemic has presented a lot of public health challenges globally. The virus mostly affected the respiratory system, so tobacco consumers (smoke/smokeless) were at a higher risk of developing severe illnesses due to COVID-19. National Tobacco Quit Line Services (NTQLS) plays an important role in tobacco cessation. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was challenging to run these services. There were several challenges faced by the NTQLS during the lockdown. The data from the NTQLS team was retrieved to analyze if the work from home and the pandemic had affected the number of attended calls and quitters during the pandemic (2020) and compared it with before the pandemic (2019). The results showed that before the pandemic, the attended calls were 36.4% whereas, during the pandemic, they were 27%. Quit-date set decreased during the pandemic (29.2%) compared to before the pandemic (41.8%). Furthermore, the number of quitters decreased during the pandemic (27.5%) compared to before the pandemic (35.9%). Telephone counseling is effective in various countries to increase the quit attempts among the individuals during the pandemic, however, these services were jeopardized due to COVID-19 pandemic. The first case of COVID‐19 in India detected on January 30, 2020, after its emergence in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The lockdown was imposed as anemergency measure by the Indian government to prevent the spread of COVID‐19 but gradually eased out due to its vast economic consequences. Just 15 days after the relaxation of lockdown restrictions, Delhi became India's worst city in terms of COVID‐19 cases. In this paper, we propose a variable‐order fractional SIR (susceptible, infected, removed) model at state‐level scale. We introduce a algorithm that uses the differential evolution algorithm in combination with Adam–Bashforth–Moulton method to learn the parameters in a system of variable‐order fractional SIR model. The model can predict the confirm COVID‐19 cases in India considering the effects of nationwide lockdown and the possible estimate of the number of infliction inactive cases after the removal of lockdown on June 1, 2020. A new parameter p is introduced in the classical SIR model representing the fraction of infected people that get tested and are thereby quarantined. The COVID‐19 trajectory in Delhi, as per our model, predicts the slowing down of the spread between January and February 2021, touching a peak of around 5 lakh confirmed cases. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on a large portion of the global population. During the initial phase of the pandemic, there was limited knowledge on how to prevent the spread of the infection. Social distancing and lockdown measures were identified as effective strategies to curb the transmission of COVID-19 infections. The objective of the survey was to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of COVID-19 infection among suburban populations. Methods: An online survey was conducted among the adult population residing in a suburban city in India. The survey included questions about socio-demographic details, common signs and symptoms, modes of transmission of COVID-19, as well as the impact of the lockdown on their daily routines, concerns, and economic effects. Results: The survey received a substantial response from participants, with 738 adults taking part, and data from 696 individuals was included in the analysis. Of the participants, 77% were male and 23% were female. It was found that 67% of the survey participants were aware of the symptoms of COVID-19. Additionally, during the lockdown, 88% of the participants reported spending their time watching TV, using mobile devices, and engaging in household work. Conclusion: The majority of the population was aware of the common signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and how it spreads. Copepods act as indicators of the aquatic ecosystem since they rapidly respond to changes in nutrient content of the environment. Plankton samples were collected for two years from the Covelong coast, India (January to December 2019 and January to December 2021). The diversity patterns of pontellid copepods before and after the COVID-19 lockdown were analyzed. Physicochemical parameters like temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, calcium, magnesium, nitrite, phosphate, and ammonia level for both years were measured to compare and contrast the coastal health before and after the lockdown. Six species of pontellid copepods were reported before the lockdown period and 10 species were reported after the lockdown. Physicochemical parameters like ammonia, nitrite, and phosphate levels were reduced after the lockdown. Temperature and nitrite showed a considerable negative correlation with pontellid copepods (-0.749 and -0.782), whereas dissolved oxygen showed a high positive correlation (0.732). Regression analysis was carried out to emphasize the relationship between pontellid copepods with the environment. The regression (R2) coefficient with temperature, nitrite, and dissolved oxygen were 0.571, 0.682, and 0.636, respectively. However, high species diversity was observed in February during both pre- and postlockdown periods. Redundancy analysis was used to visualize the relationship between the pontellid copepods and physicochemical parameters. The second wave of COVID-19 triggered crises in India and resulted in a regional scale lockdown (March 2021), exempting specific economic sectors from economic misery. A national lockdown was announced during the first wave of this pandemic (March, 2020), resulting in a dramatic improvement in air quality. The present study explored whether the regional lockdown has an equal influence on air quality in various urban morphological units as the national lockdown. Results show that the regional lockdown in 2021 improved air quality by 32% more than the national lockdown in 2020. The rate of air quality improved between pre-lockdown and during a nationwide lockdown was 33%, 41% and 15% in industrial, commercial, and residential zones, respectively, but 53%, 46% and 43% during the regional lockdown. Coronavirus cases in India have been steadily increasing since March 2020. COronaVIrus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been managed by a variety of preventative measures. A prominent measure by the Government of India to prevent the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) began on March 25, 2020, with a complete suspension of all outdoor activities throughout the country. Such complete lockdown has resulted in a decrease in anthropogenic emissions, which is partly due to restrictions on human activities. Delhi National Capital Region (NCR), a landlocked area, suffers from high amounts of aerosols due to both natural and anthropogenic sources. The present research focuses on changes in Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) prior to and during lockdown (initial and second lockdown phases) around satellite cities (Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar and Gurugram) of Delhi using high-resolution MODIS AOD product. With the implementation of lockdown measures in phase I and phase III of the current study region, AOD decreased dramatically, while phase II and phase IV lockdown phases had a higher concentration of aerosol. An unexpected increase in AOD occurred during the second lockdown compared with the initial lockdown and before the lockdown. Background With an increasing number of cases of COVID-19 disease, the Indian government announced a complete lockdown on March 24, 2020, and the country remained under complete lockdown in April 2020. After ramping up health infrastructure and although cases were on the rise, the lockdown was ordered to gradually lift in May 2020. Methodology It was a retrospective cross-sectional study of all patients admitted to our medical college trauma center in April 2020 and who were compared with April 2019. We studied the prevalence and outcome of road traffic accidents (RTA), assault, and fall from height (FFH) victims admitted to our trauma center. Data were collected using an Excel sheet, and statistical analysis was done using the latest available SSPS software. Results Our study groups included 124 trauma patients from April 2020 as compared with 322 trauma patients from April 2019. The intense lockdown resulted in a decrease in the number of RTA (−72%), FFH (–29%), and assault patients (–7%). There was no statistically significant change in patients' care and management at our center in terms of mortality and morbidity. No Covid-19-positive neurosurgery trauma patients were admitted in April 2020 to our center. Conclusion During the stringent lockdown period of April 2020, there was a significant decrease in the number of trauma victims, especially RTAs. Background: This study investigates the nuanced experiences of faculty members in higher education institutions during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Focusing on family-work conflict, job satisfaction, and personal wellbeing, the research aims to provide comprehensive insights into the challenges and adaptations encountered by faculty members amidst unprecedented disruptions. Method: A mixed-method approach was employed, encompassing both quantitative and qualitative measures. The quantitative facet involved 82 participants who responded surveys distributed to faculty members across diverse regions of India. Concurrently, qualitative data were collected through interviews with 30 faculty members in three states. The quantitative study utilized standardized tools, while the qualitative inquiry followed a semi-structured interview schedule. Result: Quantitative findings revealed a significant upswing in job satisfaction after institutional reopening compared to the lockdown period. However, no significant differences were observed concerning work-family conflict and personal wellbeing. Notably, faculty members reported heightened work-family and family-work interference compared to national statistics. Qualitative responses highlight a notable shift in teaching methodologies, incorporating multimedia and online tools. In this article, we propose a model (using a simple SIR model) for the analysis of the spread and control of COVID-19 pandemic in India after the subsequent lockdown(s) by taking into account the approach of partial measures, which, in fact, could be a mid-way approach between the two approaches of taking complete measures or no measures. Our supposition of partial measures (which put restrictions on the movements of some age groups) could be an effective protocol in controlling the spread of the coronavirus without hampering economic activities. Objective: The objective of the study is to examine the impact of school closures on recreational screen time, emotional, and behavioral functioning of school-going children and adolescents during the imposition of social containment measures and school closure in India. Methodology: The survey utilized a Google Form that was sent to parents of children aged 6--14 years through e-mails and social media platforms. Parents were asked to report on the child's duration of recreational screen time and whether the child's overall behavioral functioning had changed since the school closures. The child's emotional and behavioral functioning was assessed by the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The scores on the SDQ and screen time use were compared by overall parental behavioral rating to identify the areas of concerns for children whose functioning was reported to have worsened after the closing of schools. Results: The mean recreational screen time was reported to be 2.65 h (standard deviation = 1.89). A significantly higher proportion of children whose behavior worsened after school closures, relative to those who improved or were same, had scores in the abnormal range of functioning on three of the subscales of SDQ including emotional problems (χ² = 29.03, P = 0.0001), hyperactivity/inattention (χ² = 24.67, P = 0.0001), conduct problems (χ² = 22.01, P = 0.0001), and overall total SDQ score (χ² = 41.20, P = 0.0001). Conclusions: Interventions should be aimed at encouraging outdoor physical activity while respecting government restrictions, healthy routines, pursuing hobbies, and promoting responsible use of electronic devices during the pandemic and crisis recovery period. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a 25% massive increase in the global prevalence of anxiety and depression. Aims & Objectives: To assess anxiety & depression and their association with socio-demographic factors during the COVID-19 pandemic among school-going adolescents. Methodology: Using two simple random sampling, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 690 school-age adolescents (14 to 19 years) in four Nagar Palikas of the district of Dehradun. The questionnaire includes sociodemographic section, GAD-7, PHQ-2, Modified version of CoPaQ and coping strategies. Result: In study it's been found that more than half of the participants were facing symptoms of anxiety and 58.7% of participants had a major depressive disorder likely. 78% participants used phone and internet f/b watching TV (73.8%) and sleeping (68.1%). To explore mental health and self-management in glaucoma patients during the COVID-19 pandemic inCentral India and to describe the correlation between anxiety, depression, glaucoma and self-management. METHODOLOGY:This cross-sectional study included glaucoma patients who enrolled in a case management platform and completed an online survey. The survey included the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the Glaucoma Self-Management Questionnaire (GSMQ). OBSERVATION AND RESULTS:Among the 218 glaucoma patients enrolled in this study, the proportion of patients experiencing depression and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic was 26.5% and 20.3%, respectively. In these glaucoma patients, a statistical association was found between depression and self-control (r = -0.25, P = 0.01). Purpose: The rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic upended societies across the world, with billions forced into lockdowns. As countries contemplated instating and rolling back lockdown measures, and considered the impact of pandemic fatigue on policy measures, and furthermore to prepare for the improved management of future pandemics, this study examines the effectiveness of policy measures in limiting the spread of infections and fatalities. Design/methodology/approach: The methodological approach in the study centres on a fixed effects panel regression analysis and employs the COVID-19 Government Response Stringency Index, which comprises eight containment measures and three health campaigns, with progressive degrees of stringency, in order to investigate the efficacy of government policies. Findings: Findings suggest that some government policies were effective at reducing implicit mortality rates, infection cases and fatalities during the first four months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Solid stringency measures to reduce mortality rates include public gathering restrictions on more than 100 attendees, and international travel limits for developed countries and islands. Fatalities can further be reduced through the closing of public transport, whereas infection cases also experience benefits from public information campaigns. Comparable results are observed in a robustness test across 12 months. Originality/value: Some non-pharmaceutical policies are shown to be more effective than others at reducing the spread of infections, fatalities and mortality rates, and support policymakers to manage future pandemics more effectively. Purpose: Lifestyle in the modern era has drastically changed across the globe, and the healthcare profession was no exception. The increased time spent in the virtual space for various purposes, including online classes and webinars, is hypothesized to increase the risk of vision-related disorders such as asthenopia, dry eyes, and visual fatigue. The purpose of this study was to evaluate fusional vergence and ocular accommodation among optometry professionals in a tertiary eye care center during the immediate post-coronavirus disease 2019 (post-COVID-19) lockdown period. Methods: Optometrists posted in the general out-patient department, specialty clinics, and the ocular diagnostics department were included in the study. A total of 65 optometrists were included in the study. All optometrists underwent a comprehensive binocular vision assessment. Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey questionnaires were administered to all optometrists at the beginning of the assessment. Results: Out of 65 optometrists, 48 (73.8%) were women. The mean (standard deviation) age of the participants was 24 (3) years. Eleven (16.9%) optometrists had normal binocular vision parameters, and the rest 54 (83.1%) had non-strabismic binocular vision anomalies. Reduced accommodative facility and convergence insufficiency were seen among 43 (66.2%) optometrists, whereas 30 (46.2%) had reduced accommodative facility alone. Twelve (18.5%) participants were symptomatic as per the convergence insufficiency symptom survey. Conclusion: This study highlights the fact that a large proportion of optometrists have undetected non-strabismic binocular vision anomalies in a tertiary eye care center. It is important for eye care professionals to undergo regular binocular vision assessments in association with ophthalmic examinations and relevant management. Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurobehavioral disorder among children, with an estimated prevalence of 1.3 per 1000 in India. The nationwide lockdown imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the closure of schools for an indefinite period. After the reopening of schools, the lockdown period was feared to have caused a deterioration in symptoms of existing mental health conditions among school-going children. This field study aimed to probe the association of school closures due to lockdown with any change in symptoms of ADHD in aged 6–15 years in the largest tertiary care hospital in Kolkata. Methods: A longitudinal observational study was conducted involving 34 prediagnosed ADHD patients attending the Clinical Psychology outpatient department (OPD) of a tertiary hospital for follow-up. Data was collected by face-to-face interviews with the patients' parents using a predesigned, pretested structured study schedule. Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS) was used to assess the ADHD symptoms. Results: Twenty-three (67.65%) patients were observed to have worsened ADHD symptoms after lockdown. Significant worsening was observed in the ADHD indicator and the mood disorder indicator. Significant contributing factors were rural residence, nuclear family, non-attendance at school, and knowledge inadequacy among parents. Introduction: Pandemics and subsequent lockdowns affect mental health of different subgroups of populations. In Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19), caregivers of those patients who have respiratory complaints is one such subgroup which is more vulnerable to disturbances in mental health, because of the fear that their patient's respiratory symptoms could be because of COVID-19. Aim: To assess the psychosocial impact of COVID-19 and subsequent state imposed lockdown on the caregivers of patients presenting with respiratory complaints and also to evaluate the effect of relaxation of lockdown after following-up them over a period of time. Materials and Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Government Medical College, Patiala, Punjab, India (tertiary care institute), from April 2020 to June 2020. Baseline assessment was done using socio-demographic performa, lockdown related questionnaire {3 domains, summed as total score (Lockdown)}, COVID-19 related questionnaire {Total score (COVID-19)} and General Health Questionnaire-12-Hindi version (GHQ-12). Reassessment was done twice i.e., at 11-15 days and 41-45 days after relaxation of lockdown. Quality Of Life (QOL) at first and second follow-up versus pre-lockdown times (score A and C) and first follow-up versus un-lockdown (score B) was also noted. Analysis was conducted using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (IBM, SPSS)version 22.0. Results: Mean age of the participants was 40.2±11.812 years with maximum caregivers 25 (41.7%) aged between 31-40 years. Majority (83.3%) were men. Psychological distress was experienced in 50% of caregivers at baseline and 23.7% caregivers at first follow-up (p-value=0.001). Worry for COVID-19 (p-value=0.035), Domain 1 scores (p-value <0.001), Domain 2 scores (p-value=0.003), Domain 3 scores (p-value=0.001), and Total score Lockdown (p-value <0.001) decreased significantly at first follow-up. Mean C score was significantly better than mean A score (p-value <0.001). Baseline psychological distress was significantly more in those with worry for COVID-19 (p-value=0.018), poorer scores of domains 1 (p-value=0.005), domains 2 (p-value <0.001), domains 3 (p-value <0.001), total score (Lockdown) (p-value <0.001) and total score (COVID-19) (p-value=0.010). The spring 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns led to a rapid reduction in aerosol and aerosol precursor emissions. These emission reductions provide a unique opportunity for model evaluation and to assess the potential efficacy of future emission control measures. We investigate changes in observed regional aerosol optical depth (AOD) during the COVID-19 lockdowns and use these observed anomalies to evaluate Earth system model simulations forced with COVID-19-like reductions in aerosols and greenhouse gases. Most anthropogenic source regions do not exhibit statistically significant changes in satellite retrievals of total or dust-subtracted AOD, despite the dramatic economic and lifestyle changes associated with the pandemic. Of the regions considered, only India exhibits an AOD anomaly that exceeds internal variability. Earth system models reproduce the observed responses reasonably well over India but initially appear to overestimate the magnitude of response in East China and when averaging over the Northern Hemisphere (0–70 ∘ N) as a whole. We conduct a series of sensitivity tests to systematically assess the contributions of internal variability, model input uncertainty, and observational sampling to the aerosol signal, and we demonstrate that the discrepancies between observed and simulated AOD can be partially resolved through the use of an updated emission inventory. The discrepancies can also be explained in part by characteristics of the observational datasets. The study was conducted in two phases (lockdown-1 and lockdown-2). A total of 390 subjects were included in the study (260 subjects in the lockdown-1 phase and 130 subjects in the lockdown-2 phase). Data on diet, sleep, stress, and physical activity were obtained and analyzed. Results: The mean age of the participants of phase-1 in the study was 41.7 ± 10.2 years and the participants of phase-2 were 44.5 ± 9.2 years. Statistically significant differences were observed between lockdown-1 and lockdown-2 in terms of monitoring of weight and other comorbid conditions, changes in the consumption of refined flour and processed foods, sugar and sugar-sweetened foods, oils and ghee, duration of physical activity, changes in the duration of sleep, and the stress levels related to COVID-19 (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The impact of the lockdowns on health was very significant and different areas of lifestyle were affected in both the lockdowns. Weight gain was reported in both phases of the lockdown. The monitoring of health parameters, eating frequency, diet, and stress levels were affected during lockdown-1, whereas during lockdown-2, sleep duration and physical activity were affected. To arrest the spread of COVID-19, most countries have imposed some form of lockdown to ensure social distancing. For India, a complete was imposed by the Central Government over four phases and over two months (April-June, 2020). While the effectiveness of such a stringent measure is yet to be established, some estimates of the economic distress owing to lockdown are available and it projects a substantial drop in GDP as well as State Domestic Products. It is therefore important for India to plan the unlock down phase well. Unfortunately, with the possibility of may more pandemic related disruptions that are likely to happen in the future, both lock down as well as removal of lockdown becomes a key determinant for both controlling the spread of pandemics as well as revive the economy. In this paper, we develop a theoretical framework to address how un lockdown must be planned and discuss the respective roles of the States as well as the Centre. The model is set against the backdrop where a large part of the migrant labor has also been forced to return to their home States. In our model, the Centre as well as the States maximize the Expected Economic output while planning un lockdown. The probability of COVID spread is modeled using simple Epidemiological probability function. We find that a centralized lockdown would mean lower lockdown levels for the labor receiving state compared to the case when such decisions were decentralized and a higher lockdown level for the labor sending state as compared to the case when such decisions were decentralized. We recommend that the role of the Centre in easing of lockdown must be limited to two things. One, support the States with more investments in health infrastructure that will help them reduce lockdown intensities. Two, compensate the expected shortfall in wage income through a Direct Benefit Transfer to the labor in the two States. The phrase "coronavirus" was, without a question, the most googled and uttered phrase in the past three years. As the spread of the coronavirus (COVID 19) has increased, various countries had imposed a lockdown that restricted human mobility, and a ban on all types of social activities. This also influences various economic activities. With all the financial and health concerns, the influence of the pandemic lockout on the natural environment was something that the scientific community should be concerned about. The influence of many significant good and evil effects on the environment in several areas of India is reviewed and discussed in this paper. Different regions in India showed an improvement in air quality, a decrease in noise pollution, and wildlife more pleasant and relax than before. Aquatic ecosystems revealed indications of restoration. On the other hand, the rise in plastic waste like personal protective kits (gloves and masks), biomedical waste, disinfectants, and their mismanagement have long-term terrible impacts on the environment. However, as India gradually returned to pre-pandemic conditions, the positive environmental effects will fade as festivals, public transport, growing production, and agricultural activities may raise pollution to critical levels. Hence, Pollution Control Boards and National Health Programmes should integrate the approaches acquired during the pandemic to help foster social cognitive lifestyles, policy interventions, and the development of advanced smart cities that will safeguard individuals from pollution. This research paper is a qualitative-based work on the ethnographic study of Ema keithel of Manipur. The study put forth the after-effect of the economic lockdown of Ema keithel due to COVID-19 and the present condition of women traders after the upliftment of the lockdown. The economic data was comparatively based on the pre-COVID-19 situation and the post-lockdown period. The women in Ema keithel are predominantly the sole bread earners and providers in their families; through their income, financial expenses are sustained. However, with the sudden lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, many thousands of women and their families had lost their only hope and financial support system. The lockdown, commencing in India from March 23, 2020 to control the escalation of Covid-19 cases, exhibited a positive impact on the air quality. The study attempts to assess the outcome of lockdown on the air quality of Kolkata, India followed by the comparison of six priority pollutants during pre-lockdown, lockdown, and unlock phases. Averaged concentrations of PM10 (72%), PM2.5 (73%), NOx (84%), SO2 (48%), and CO (61%) showed reduction throughout lockdown in comparison with pre-lockdown phase, although no significant reduction was observed in ground-level Ozone. Unlock Phases I and II showed similar concentrations of the pollutants as that in the lockdown period whereas, in unlock Phase-III, the air quality became comparable to that before lockdown. Statistical analysis confirmed that the reduction in air pollution is attributed to atmospheric factors. PCA analysis established significant positive correlation between particulate matters, CO, SO2, and NOx; however, no significant correlation was observed between NOx and O3. January and December showed the highest load of most of the pollutants. Health risk was evaluated by calculating the Relative risk and Health Air Quality Index, which showed maximum health risk during the pre-lockdown and minimum during lockdown and unlock Phase-II with the highest contributor being PM10. Assessing the impact of lockdowns on COVID-19 incidence may provide important lessons for management of pandemic in resource-limited settings. We examined growth of incident confirmed COVID-19 patients before, during and after lockdowns during the first wave in Pune city that reported the largest COVID-19 burden at the peak of the pandemic. Using anonymized individual-level data captured by Pune's public health surveillance program between February 1st and September 15th 2020, we assessed weekly incident COVID-19 patients, infection rates, and epidemic curves by lockdown status (overall and by sex, age, and population density) and modelled the natural epidemic using the compartmental model. Effect of lockdown on incident patients was assessed using multilevel Poisson regression. We used geospatial mapping to characterize regional spread. Of 241,629 persons tested for SARS-CoV-2, 64,526 (26%) were positive, contributing to an overall rate of COVID-19 disease of 267·0 (95% CI 265·3–268·8) per 1000 persons. The median age of COVID-19 patients was 36 (interquartile range [IQR] 25–50) years, 36,180 (56%) were male, and 9414 (15%) were children < 18 years. Epidemic curves and geospatial mapping showed delayed peak of the patients by approximately 8 weeks during the lockdowns as compared to modelled natural epidemic. Compared to a subsequent unlocking period, incident COVID-19 patients were 43% lower (IRR 0·57, 95% CI 0·53–0·62) during India's nationwide lockdown and were 22% lower (IRR 0·78, 95% CI 0.73–0.84) during Pune's regional lockdown and was uniform across age groups and population densities. The Government of India imposed the strictest lockdown from 25 March 2020 till 31 May 2020 to control the spread of coronavirus outbreak. Consequently, about 1.38 billion people were under home confinement. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we studied circadian rhythm (CR) in the usages of Facebook Messenger (FBM), as a group phenomenon, and published the findings in this journal. We thought it would be worthwhile to carry out a sequel study to assess if there are any changes in the CR in the patterns of digital activity of the FBM users during the COVID-19-triggered lockdown. All the authors of this paper harvested real-time data from their FBM account for over 16 consecutive days between 26 March and 17 April 2020. A statistically significant CR in the digital activity pattern of FBM friends of all the authors was validated. Results of one-way repeated measures ANOVA revealed a statistically significant higher Mesor and amplitude of the rhythm in FBM activity patterns during the lockdown; however, acrophase remained unchanged. We concluded that the COVID-19-triggered lockdown did not affect the location of the peaks and the persistence of CR in the online activity patterns of FBM users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
