Of the goals and targets specified by the Kunming‐Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, Target 3, often referred to as "30 × 30," has garnered widespread attention globally. In this paper, we critique India's potential to meet this target. We find that with its vast network of ecosystems that are under some form of protection and through the recognition of other effective area‐based conservation measures sites, India has the potential to meet the quantitative target of conserving and managing at least 30% of its area by 2030. However, the qualitative attributes of the target might be more difficult to realize owing to several challenges, such as inadequate landscape connectivity, insufficient representation of habitats in the current protected area model, and the exacerbation of socioeconomic vulnerabilities of resource‐dependent communities. To achieve strategic, inclusive, and equitable conservation, we suggest a four‐pronged approach involving landscape‐level biodiversity conservation, socially just and collaborative safeguarding of biodiversity, and relevant policy (re)formulation, informed and underlain by long‐term research and impact monitoring. Although we focus on India, the issues we discuss are of broader relevance, especially for countries across the Global South that are also likely to be significantly impacted by the implementation of the target. Rice-paddy agriculture is widely expanding, particularly in Asia. Rice-paddy fields are stagnated with water and insecticides are applied to control pests. Expansion of agriculture and pesticide are known drivers of declining amphibian populations globally. Yet, several amphibians persist in such temporary wetlands. How amphibians persist in this landscape matrix is not clearly understood. We document amphibian diversity in rice-paddy fields in south India and examine trophic interactions of the two most abundant species. From 60 rice paddy fields, we recorded six species of anurans among which, Minervarya caperata and Microhyla ornata were most abundant. The stomach contents of 57 individuals of the two species were extracted. They consumed prey items belonging to eight orders and 56 taxonomically distinct units dominated by Diptera and Hymenoptera: Formicidae. Although individuals of M. ornata were smaller in body size compared to M. caperata, both species consumed a similar number of arthropods. The dietary niche breadth of M. caperata was wider than M. ornata and the diets of the two species did not overlap greatly. We discuss our findings in the context of prey availability, foraging strategies, and highlight the role of anurans in pest control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we have analysed active and passive earth observation data for identifying the different geomorphic sub-provinces associated with coastal and fluvial geomorphic processes in the south-western part of Bengal Basin. For this purpose, variations in the spectral response of these sub-provinces in IRS P6 LISS III data are enhanced using principal component (PC) and independent component (IC) methods to spatially delineate the geomorphic sub-provinces and associated Quaternary sediments. It has been observed that the false colour composite derived using IC (first, second and third ICs) are effective in enhancing fluvial sub-provinces, while IC band 4, band 3 and band 2 are suitable to delineate coastal sub-provinces. On the other hand, PC composite derived using band 4, band 3 and band 1 are suitable to delineate different Quaternary sediments deposited within the spatial extent of geomorphic sub-provinces. Fused image enhanced products of IRS (Indian Remote Sensing Satellite) LISS III band and ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) PALSAR (Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar) polarisation bands are used to supplement and complement the variations observed for each geomorphic province in optical data as radar interactions are sensitive to variation in moisture and surface cover. Although there is a strong synergy between the spatial extent of geomorphic sub-provinces and the Quaternary units in terms of spatial disposition, different Quaternary units are also found within the same geomorphic province. Therefore, we have segmented each geomorphic sub-provinces based on the spatial extent of the different Quaternary deposits to identify few geoenvironmental (termed here as geomorpho-environmental) zones. In this regard, eleven zones are identified. Each zone has been characterised based on geomorphic stability, potentiality for agriculture practice, scope for urban development and reclamation. In recent times, several new species of amphibians have been described from India. Many of these discoveries are from biodiversity hotspots or from within protected areas. We undertook amphibian surveys in human dominated landscapes outside of protected areas in south western region of India between years 2013–2015. We encountered a new species of Microhyla which is described here as Microhyla laterite sp. nov. It was delimited using molecular, morphometric and bioacoustics comparisons. Microhyla laterite sp. nov. appears to be restricted to areas of the West coast of India dominated by laterite rock formations. The laterite rock formations date as far back as the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary and are considered to be wastelands in-spite of their intriguing geological history. We identify knowledge gaps in our understanding of the genus Microhyla from the Indian subcontinent and suggest ways to bridge them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vast areas of tropical evergreen forests have been selectively logged in the past, and many areas continue to be logged. The impacts of such logging on amphibians are poorly understood. I examined the response of anuran communities to historical selective logging in a wet evergreen forest in south India. Anuran assemblages in unlogged forest were compared with assemblages in selectively logged forest. Forty 10 m × 10 m quadrats in forest, riparian zones, and streams of unlogged and selectively logged forests were searched at night for anurans. Species richness did not appear to be affected by logging. However, anuran density varied significantly and was 42 percent lower in selectively logged forests compared to unlogged forests. Anuran densities also varied significantly across microhabitats, with highest densities in streams of both selectively logged and unlogged forests. Patterns of niche overlap varied with selective logging as niche breadth either expanded, contracted, or remained neutral for different species. Ordination analysis explained 95 percent of the variation in species assemblage across selectively logged and unlogged forests. The assemblage in selectively logged forest was nested within unlogged forest. Among the habitat characteristics, litter thickness and water depth had the highest influence on the assemblage. This was followed by litter/water temperature, air temperature, and lastly relative humidity. It appears that species richness and composition of anurans in selectively logged forests is converging with unlogged forests, but the effects of historical logging seem to persist on anuran densities and their niche characteristics even ca 40 yr since logging ceased. Geological and magnetic features were interpreted using IRS-P6 (LISS-III) and aeromagnetic data respectively. Historical rainfall data and the water-table fluctuations were also analysed and integrated with the above in conjunction with ground truth information. It is observed that the intrusion activity of the dykes had disturbed the fracture network, resulting in filling up of pore spaces in the weathered columns. Lineaments across the dykes, the associated pediment and the weathered pediplain have more porosity and permeability. The accumulation and rising of groundwater flow is influenced by the above structural set-up. It is concluded that significant amount of base flow had resulted in hydro-loading and was responsible for the micro-seismicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anurans of Puducherry, a union territory measuring 293 km2, on the East coast of India are understudied. In this communication, we provide a comprehensive list of anurans encountered in and around wetlands across this union territory. Visual Encounter Surveys during the rainy season in 17 wetlands yielded a total of 14 species belonging to four families. This diversity is relatively low compared to other urban areas like Bangalore or Pune having 16 and 31 species respectively. India has the largest population of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The conventional agents used to treat type 2 diabetes frequently exhibit reduced efficacy over time leading to inadequate glycaemic control and are also associated with adverse effects. Hence, there is a need for alternative therapies that can overcome the limitations associated with conventional antidiabetic agents. This review focuses on Gliptins, which have become a research area of intense focus and present an alternative therapeutic strategy for patients with type 2 diabetes. Gliptins show significant improvements in glycaemic control and are well tolerated, particularly with regard to weight change and hypoglycemia. Diabetes is a major public health emergency of the 21st century. Results of the Indian Council of Medical Research-INdia DIABetes (ICMR-INDIAB) study have found prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes in India to be as high as 7.3% and 10.3%, respectively with nation-wide projection of 77.2 million people with prediabetes and 69.2 million with diabetes. It is well established that insulin resistance (IR) and islet β-cell failure are the two major features of T2D Multiple mechanisms including glucotoxicity, lipotoxicity, oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, formation of amyloid deposits in the islets, etc. have been hypothesized to participate in the pathology of the disease. In the concluding decade of the last century, numerous studies - prospective and cross-sectional, have confirmed the role of chronic low-grade inflammation as a pathogenetic factor of T2D. It has been shown that increased levels of various inflammatory markers and mediators including fundamental markers like white blood cell count, C-reactive protein (CRP) to the more specific circulating cytokines like, interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-1β, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), etc. correlate with incident T2D. Based on the robust evidence implying the role of inflammation in T2D pathogenesis, several studies have proven that the proinflammatory cytokines play a central role in the development of microvascular diabetic complications such as nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy. Inflammation in T2D causes accelerated atherosclerosis which predisposes to CVD, the leading cause of mortality in these patients. Recently there is a considerable increase in the interest among the researchers about anti-inflammatory therapies in the setting of chronic disorders such as T2D and CV diseases. In a multi-country study conducted in Asia, approximately 50% of Indian respondents had poor diabetes control. Most patients initially respond to sulfonylurea and/or metformin, and later these agents lose their effectiveness with time. Therapeutic option in patients uncontrolled on two-drug combination therapy is either to add third oral drug or insulin. However, use of insulin is limited due to its high cost and poor compliance. Majority of new treatment options like GLP1 agonists, insulin analogs and SGLT2 inhibitors are costly considering they are still under patent. The thiazolidinedione class of drugs is associated with adverse effects like fluid retention and weight gain that may result in or exacerbate edema and congestive heart failure. Thus there is a need for a safe and inexpensive treatment option for the management of uncontrolled T2D. Considering the role of inflammation in T2D pathogenesis, the drug should not only have antihyperglycemic effects but also reduce inflammatory burden thus reducing the progression and complications of T2D. The current interest is apparently directed towards drugs targeting inflammation acting at different stages of the inflammatory cascade. In the recently published CANTOS study, canakinumab, a selective, high-affinity, fully human monoclonal antibody which inhibits IL-1β, has no consistent long-term benefits on HbA1c. Other selective inhibitors like anakinra (IL-1 receptor antagonist) and etanercept (TNF inhibitor) too have yielded modest effects on glycemic parameters and insulin sensitivity. However, hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), a broad anti-inflammatory agent has been shown to reduce HbA1c by 0.87%. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is considered as one of the safest disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug, used widely for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The effect of HCQ in preventing development of diabetes in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases was highlighted in a prospective observational study of 4905 adults with rheumatoid arthritis and no diabetes with 21.5 years of follow-up. Patients who took HCQ for more than 4 years had a significant 77% lower risk of diabetes compared with non users of HCQ (RR, 0.23; 95% CI, 0.11-0.50). Taking cue from this study highlighting the anti-diabetic effect of HCQ, pioneering research studies evaluating these effects of HCQ were conducted in India. Glucose monitoring is an important aspect of diabetes care. The traditional methodologies of blood glucose monitoring such as fasting plasma glucose, post prandial glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin and self-monitoring of blood glucose do not adequately address hypoglycemia and glycemic variability, which are two important risk factors for diabetes-related complications. Ambulatory glucose profile (AGP) developed from a continuous glucose monitoring system is a simplified report, with standardized statistics and targets and visual representation of time in standardized glycemic ranges, glucose variability, and glycemic exposure over a single 24-h day. The role of AGP in T2DM patients who are on oral anti-diabetic drugs (OADs) is still not clearly defined. An expert group of endocrinologists and diabetologists met in Pune, India to discuss the role of AGP in T2DM patients on OADs. This article aims to discuss the consensus of the expert group on the role of AGP in T2DM patients on OADs and also reviews the various aspects of AGP and its interpretation; and the available evidences for disease management including treatment options based on AGP report., (© Journal of the Association of Physicians of India 2011.)

Purpose of Review: To review the evolution of family support movement for schizophrenia in India and to report perspectives of family caregivers who are running family support groups across the country in the backdrop of recent legislations in India., Recent Findings: Family support movement started in the 1990s, mostly by family caregivers independently in multiple cities across the country. Apart from periodic support meetings, they have successfully influenced recent legislations to address the felt needs of families. Mental health professionals need to gain skills to work collaboratively with assertive family caregivers to develop services to support those diagnosed with mental illness. Though there is a need for such movement, funding is poor and very few caregivers of persons with schizophrenia are forthcoming to participate. The formation of national federation with government and non-government partnership could help give the required impetus to the family support movement for persons with schizophrenia in India.

Personalized medicine is an individualized and stratified approach to the management of a disease. Personalized medicine can reform the prevention, prediction, and management of diabetes. Use of genetic information in polygenic and monogenic forms of diabetes can help to identify genetic variants and reclassify patients into pathophysiological subgroups. Targeted diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic interventions can be defined for these groups for effective management of diabetes. Pharmacogenetics combines genotypic and phenotypic factors to develop personalized care in various pathophysiological subgroups of persons with diabetes. Personalized medicine finds wider utility in monogenic (especially Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) and Neonatal Diabetes Mellitus [NDM]) than in polygenic, diabetes. The most frequently mutated genes in MODY include HNF1A and HNF3A. the common genes responsible for NDM include KCNJ11 and ABCC8 (SUR) genes. These genes influence various aspects of glucose metabolism such as β-cell K-ATP channel modulation, production of insulin and development of pancreas.
