1. Evaluation of critical success determinants to the implementation of additive manufacturing technology in the spare parts supply chain: a grey causal modelling approach.

Abstract

Purpose: Additive Manufacturing technology (AMT) is swiftly gaining prominence to induce automation and innovation in manufacturing systems. It holds immense potential to change supply chain dynamics by providing the possibility of printing objects on demand. This study thus formulates and analyzes the framework to incorporate AMT to handle the spare parts supply chain management (SPSCM) in capital-intensive industries by identifying and assessing the critical success factors (CSFs). Design/methodology/approach: Assessment of the CSFs is performed using the novel Grey Causal Modeling method (GCM) with the objective of making SPSCM resilient and efficient. GCM conducts causal analysis by taking into consideration cause, effects, the objectives, and the situations. Findings: Findings indicate that; Logistics Lead Time (SD4), Time to manufacture (SD3), Management Support (SD11), and Risk Management (SD20) are the most prominent causal factor having a maximum impact when incorporating AMT in SPSCM. The results also reveal that the performance of manufacturing organizations that adopt AMT is substantially influenced by internal and external factors such as Management Support (SD11) and Government Regulations (SD16). Research limitations/implications: This research provides valuable information for getting the global spare parts supply chain equipped for the post-COVID age, where digital technologies such as AMT will be fundamental for bolstering supply chain resilience and efficiency. Originality/value: This research proposes a framework for performance assessment when incorporating AMT in SPSCM. Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibilities of improving the quality of existing maintenance task of the atomizer of milk powder manufacturing unit of a dairy plant. Looking to the past business volume and expected growth, the milk powder manufacturing unit forms a noticeable sector of processing plant. The lack of quality in maintenance standards leads to reliability losses of about 20–25% with low productivity and profit. Such facts and challenges of keeping the system in ready-state motivate a definite maintenance plan to be modeled based on a live failure analysis to be executed during shutdown or scheduled period. Design/methodology/approach: The deliverables are achieved by collecting the historical failure data i.e. downtime and failure frequencies; from January 2020 to July 2020 at Dudhsagar dairy, Gujarat, India. Reliability modeling is done in a view to understand the failure pattern behavior of the milk powder manufacturing unit. The atomizer is discriminated as a critical component based on these data and their functional failures, failure causes, effects and repercussions of failures with existing control and maintenance practices has been modeled based on live shop-floor study. Scores are assigned on 1 to 10 levels by analyzing attributes effects from lowest to highest concern respectively for every modes of failure through realistic brain-storming among maintenance team by incorporating some advanced attributes like maintainability, economic safety, economic cost and spares with basic criteria in this study. The maintainability criticality index (MCI) is narrated by these score values through multi-attribute decision-making (MADM) based failure analysis models like Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). Findings: The primary findings of this research work are to propose improvements in the quality of the maintenance plan of critical component like; atomizer of a milk powder manufacturing unit which is commonly representing critical component in a major range of industrial processes. The case study recommended four silent maintenance strategies i.e. scheduled maintenance scheduled discard, scheduled failure finding and redesign as a qualified maintenance plan for the atomizer based on MCI and rankings of its potential failure causes. The results are helpful in upgrading quality standards for the maintenance activities of a process industry of alike or of dissimilar kinds in accordance with the failure analysis. Originality/value: Originality mainly consists of investigating the scope of enhancing the existing maintenance practices through actual failure analysis with the help of TOPSIS. The criteria employed in this study are probability of chances of failure, degree of detectability and degree of severity as basic criteria along with some advanced criteria like; maintainability, spare parts, economic cost, economic safety are selected based on the outcome of shop-floor study and reliability modeling. The notable past failure statistics (downtime, frequency of failures) of a milk powder manufacturing unit were recorded and these data are analyzed based on reliability to extract an explicative component i.e. atomizer. Abstract

Industrialization has caused dire consumption of resources and has already caused acute damage to the environment. Due to stringent environmental regulations, organizations are enforced to adopt sustainability strategies such as reuse, repair, reduce, and remanufacturing. To remanufacture products, manufacturing organizations have to transform their supply chains to be closed or circular. In this study, a mathematical model is formulated to transform a traditional linear supply chain into a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) for an organization located in India. It is accomplished by incorporating remanufacturing with reverse logistics into the supply chain to achieve sustainability thereby satisfying the sustainable development goals (SDGs). A multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming approach was used to formulate the model to optimize the supply chain to improve the operations of manufacturing, recycling, repair, and disposal to minimize the environmental effects and to maximize the net profit of the product. The GAMS optimization software was used to solve the model, and sensitivity analysis was carried out to validate the robustness of the proposed network. The result states that the organization can make profits by adopting the SDGs. Industry can optimize the number of parts to be repaired, dismantled, recycled, and determine the supplier's optimum quantity of parts purchase. Lack of awareness on the potential of sustainable CLSCs is hindering its acceptance in the economy. The proper use of the proposed model not only helps the organization to maximize profit but also minimizes the environmental impact by attaining sustainability. Abstract

Increasing growth and development of medical technology and procedures has raised radiology costs, thereby increasing healthcare costs. Technology upgradations are inevitably accompanied by the cost of procuring such technologies to health care organizations, in terms of both capital costs and operating costs. These costs can have very significant impacts on the financial health of healthcare systems. This has lead to a rising interest of administrators from healthcare organizations. Cost awareness has become vital even in radiology departments. Having details of costs incurred related to the resources used in procedures to define their actual price and to plan future investments in the department. Hence a healthcare organization needs to estimate and control the costs while monitoring the revenue generated. Since the investments are huge, it is important to consider the cost of spare parts and labour charges as a vital constituent of operating cost. The last three decades have brought major changes in radiology services with the introduction of many complex services. Further, the equipment for the two major processes ie the CT and the MRI scans are a costly investment. Hence many researchers have highlighted the need for analyzing the efficiency, effectiveness and the costs related to these type of equipment. The reviews revealed few such studies have been conducted about CT and MRI. This study performs Activity Based Costing of the services provided by CT-scan and MRI machine in the radiology department and estimates the break-even point. Activity-based cost (ABC) accounting has been used in industrial and serviceproviding units. In the literature, there is scant information about the use of ABC accounting in health care and radiology. Abstract

The article reports that the Churchill-pattern clock on top of old secretariat tower in Patna, India, one of the city's best architectural landmarks has developed obstacles. It states that officials in the building construction department, which looks after the clock, claimed that engineers have been called to repair it.
