Introduction Methods Results Discussion and Conclusions We retrospectively studied the societal value of lost health due to alcohol use and compared it with excise taxes on alcohol sales for India in 2019.We estimated the overall alcohol‐attributable disease burden using disability‐adjusted life‐years (DALY) for India and its 30 states for all causes with alcohol use as a risk factor from the GBD 2019 Study. The societal value of lost health was calculated using value of life‐year (VLY) approach by multiplying region‐specific factors from ‘Global Health 2035’, 2019–2020 GDP per capita and DALYs. We acquired the national and state‐level (top 10 states) alcohol sales excise taxes from the Reserve Bank of India. Net losses were assessed by subtracting the revenue collected from excise taxes from VLY. All values are in Indian rupees (INR).The societal value of health lost due to alcohol use in India was 6.2 (95% uncertainty interval 4.8, 7.8) trillion INR in 2019. The absolute state‐level values varied from 7.3 (4.7, 10.4) billion INR in Mizoram to 1.1 (0.8, 1.4) trillion INR in Maharashtra. The per capita values ranged from 950.2 (642.9, 1285.3) INR for Bihar to 61,332 (39,273.7, 87,288.5) INR for Mizoram. Nationally, excise tax collection from alcohol sales was 1.8 trillion INR depicting a net loss of 4.4 (3.1, 6.0) trillion. Maharashtra had the largest absolute and per capita net loss.These are novel estimates depicting the net losses due to alcohol use in India with direct policy implications to disincentivise sales and adequately raise taxes. Background: Many governments have introduced health insurance schemes for the poor sections of society to save them from catastrophic health expenditure. Private hospitals play a key role in India, as they are in significant number in secondary and tertiary care services. Private hospitals have to fund their infrastructure, staff salaries from the revenue of previous year. In this study, we compared money received by a private medical college hospital bed through government insurance scheme patient and private paying patient. Methods: Observational study, comparing money reimbursed for top ten procedures treated in private medical college hospitals by Ayushman Bharat (AB) fund and the price offered by a paying patient in similar bed. Results: On average 600 patients received medical care through the AB scheme per month at our tertiary care super-specialty hospital. Highest numbers were seen in specialties like cardiovascular, and cancer treatments and infectious diseases under general medicine specialty. The costs considered were surgeon's cost, medicines, devices, and hospitalization costs. The laparoscopic procedures were incurring a loss of 130%, knee replacements about 50%, coronary bypass grafting thankfully due to controlling of prices by central government is incurring a loss of 10%. The package amount offered accounts to 26–52% only of the costs incurred by the private hospitals. Conclusion: The private academic hospitals need 25% to 50% more than current prices offered, across various procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the study was to describe the nature, magnitude, causes, and economic impact, and also to evaluate risk estimates of agricultural incidents occurring during 2012–2013 in Madhya Pradesh, India. The study was carried out in 360 villages in 9 districts of Madhya Pradesh namely Datia, Shivpuri, Balaghat, Barwani, Indore, Jhabua, Narshigpur, Satna, and Bhopal. A total of 92 793 agricultural workers participated in a survey of agricultural incidents. Of 21 agricultural incidents, 14% were fatal and 86% non-fatal in nature. The agricultural incident rates were 0.23/1000 agricultural worker per year and 0.2/1000 agricultural machines per year. The annual monetary loss due to deaths in agricultural incidents in Madhya Pradesh was estimated to be Rs. 16 935.4 lakhs. The economic loss due to agricultural incidents is more severe that resulted in significant loss to the workers due to absence from work. An editorial is presented on the economic and the psychological impact of demonetization on the people in India. Topics include the reasons for the implementation of the demonetization including the reduction of counterfeit cash, elimination of black money and the expansion of the fiscal space of the Indian government, the stress developed within the people, and its impact on psychiatric comorbidities in patients.

In the present study, we used multi-temporal satellite images of Indian Remote Sensing Satellites (IRS1D and IRS P6 - Resourcesat) from 1998 to 2005 to monitor the coastal environment of Paradip, east coast of India. The resultant coastal vector maps were used to estimate the geomorphological changes and shifting of the shoreline position. This integrated study is found useful for exploring accretion and erosion processes in the region. The shoreline maps were compared with the 1973 Survey of India toposheets to estimate the changes which have occurred in the region. Results indicate an increase of 7.72 km in shoreline length and a net loss of 18.73 km2 of beach area between the years 1973 and 1998, and 0.46 km reduction in shoreline length and 3.11 km2 increase in beach area between 1998 and 2005. An overall net increase of 7.26 km length shoreline and a net loss of 15.6 km2 was observed between 1973 and 2005. The years 2001, 2002 and 2003 exhibited loss in length of shoreline as well as area of the beach. These years coincided with certain coastal activities carried out in the study region. A 150–200 km thick, cold (35–45 mWm−2), melt-depleted lithospheric keel characterised the eastern cratons of the Indian shield at the end of the Precambrian. Differing chemical- and isotopic-characteristics, and ages of the crust and mantle rocks reveal the decoupling of the crust and mantle beneath the cratons, beginning at 2.45 Ga, in the Bastar craton. The Pan-African event was more pervasive and brought about widespread reworking in most of the cratons of the shield. Major-, trace- and rare-earth elements combined with Sr, Nd and Hf isotope data suggest a heterogenous SCLM beneath southern India. The trace element signatures of xenoliths and the presence of majoritic garnet inclusions in diamond suggest that some kimberlites were derived from the mantle transition zone. Mesoproterozoic (1.2–1.4 Ga) modal and cryptic refertilisation by asthenosphere-derived, low-degree carbonated melts led to the generation of the fluids responsible for the metasomatic transformation of the source rocks. The western craton of the shield has witnessed more severe reactivation than the eastern due to the frequent interaction of the Indian plate with mantle plumes. One plume caused major igneous activity during the late Cretaceous, synchronous with crustal attenuation, rifting and the ridge-jump at 66 Ma, in the Indian Ocean. By the end of the Palaeocene the geotherm of the western craton had risen from 50 to 55 mWm−2 in the Proterozoic to a peak 80–90 mWm−2. This increase in heat flow not only modulated the mantle thermal regime, but led to a net loss of more than 100 km of lithosphere and to destabilisation of the craton. After this thermal event, the lithosphere preserves a thickness of barely 60–80 km, and a thin crust (10–21 km) beneath the continental margin in the west. These changes decratonized the western part of the shield and the transitional region further west in the Indian Ocean where the continental ridges are almost devoid of crustal sections and the lithosphere is ~60 km thick. The waning of the Deccan Traps (65 Ma) magmatism was marked by alkaline intrusive activity along the western margin of the shield, probably derived from the SCLM in response to the rise of the mantle plume. Low degree (2–3%) partial melting of a modally and cryptically metasomatized source may have been involved in the generation of alkaline magmas from a depleted mantle source variously contaminated by an enriched endmember. • Polygenetic xenolith suite indicates crust-mantle decoupling beneath India. • Modal and cryptic metasomatism leads to replacement of SCLM by fertile mantle. • Three superimposed thermomagmatic episodes since Proterozoic. • Lithosphere-asthenosphere interaction resulted in attrition of SCLM and decratonization. Reservoir planning without the explicit accommodation of evaporation loss leads to errors in capacity estimates. However, whenever evaporation loss is considered, its quantification uses linear approximations of the intrinsically nonlinear height–area–storage (H–A–S) relationship to estimate the reservoir area, leading to bias in capacity estimates. In this work, biases resulting from using various H–A–S models are evaluated. These models include linear and nonlinear functions, either specifically developed for the case-study sites or available in the Global Reservoir and Dam (GRanD) database. All empirically derived approximations used data for two dams in India: the Bhakra on Sutlej River and the Pong on the Beas River, both tributaries of the Indus River. The results showed that linear H–A–S models underestimate the exposed surface area of the Pong reservoir by up to 11.19%; the bias at Bhakra was much less. The GRanD H–A–S model performed very poorly at both reservoirs, producing overprediction in exposed reservoir area of up to 100% and 415% at the Pong and Bhakra reservoirs, respectively. Analyses also showed that up to 29% increase in reservoir capacity is required to compensate for the effect of net evaporation loss at low demand levels. As demand increases, the required evaporation-correction capacity decreases in proportional terms and is indistinguishable for all H–A–S models.
