Electric Vehicles (EVs) are considered the best alternative vehicular technology having the potential to cater climatic change and energy security issues of the nations. Despite various promotional policy measures, the penetration of EVs is also observed very low, especially in the developing economies in the Indian subcontinent. This demands a comprehensive analysis of individuals' EV adoption characteristics and the review of recent literature indicated that most of the research on EV adoption solely focuses on either the psychological aspects leading to its purchase, ignoring the available alternatives or on the conventional choice modelling techniques which do not explicitly consider the psychological motivation to choose the innovative technology. Therefore, this study integrates both behaviour modelling and conventional choice modelling in order to unfold the important determinants of EV adoption in developing economies. This study was conducted in India and the results of Hybrid Choice Modelling (HCM) highlighted that latent attitudes such as marketing perceptions, EV performance, policy perceptions, and EV usage constraints are significant factors influencing the EV adoption intention of individuals. In addition, the study also revealed that on-road price, EV adoption intention, willingness to pay extra for EVs, monthly household income, and age are also important predictors for choice between EVs and conventional vehicles. Objective: To obtain information on caries prevalence and treatment needs of children aged 5-10 years to plan appropriate dental care services in rural areas. Materials and Methods: Children studying in all the primary schools (six schools) in the field practice area of the Rural Health Centre of the Faculty of Medicine, Annamalai University, Chidambaram, were surveyed. Each child was clinically examined in the schools by calibrated examiners. Dental caries was assessed using diagnostic criteria recommended by WHO (1997). The chi-square test and two-way analysis of variance were used for statistical analysis. Results: Five hundred and eight 5-10 year-old school children (247 boys and 261 girls) were surveyed. Caries prevalence was 71.7 and 26.5% in primary and permanent dentition, respectively. The mean dmft and decayed missing filled tooth (DMFT) scores were 3.00 and 0.42 respectively. The mean dmft decreased with age (P < 0.01) whereas the mean DMFT increased with age (P < 0.001). Although the mean dmft scores were not statistically significant different for the two sexes, the mean DMFT score was found to be higher among girls than among boys (P < 0.02). The entire dmft/DMFT value represented the 'decay' component only. There was a strong need for single surface restorations (60.6%). In the WHO index age (5-6 years), the caries prevalence was 70.2% (29.8% caries-free) with a mean dmft value of 3.54 ± 3.71. Conclusion: Dental caries is a significant public health problem in this population. An extensive system to provide primary oral health care has to be developed in the rural areas of India. Background: Fluorosis is one of the common but major emerging areas of research in the tropics. It is considered endemic in 17 states of India. However, the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu is categorised as a fluorosis non-endemic area. But clinical cases of dental fluorosis were reported in the field practice area of Department of Community Medicine, Rajah Muthiah Medical College, Annamalai University, Chidambaram. Since dental fluorosis has been described as a biomarker of exposure to fluoride, we assessed the prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis among primary school children in the service area. Materials and Methods: Children studying in six primary schools of six villages in the field practice area of Rural Health Centre of Faculty of Medicine, Annamalai University, Chidambaram, were surveyed. Every child was clinically examined at the school by calibrated examiners with Dean's fluorosis index recommended by WHO (1997). Chi-square test, Chi-square trend test and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient test were used for statistical analysis. Results: Five hundred and twenty-five 5- to 12-year-old school children (255 boys and 270 girls) were surveyed. The overall dental fluorosis prevalence was found to be 31.4% in our study sample. Dental fluorosis increased with age P < 0.001, whereas gender difference was not statistically significant. Aesthetically objectionable dental fluorosis was found in 2.1% of the sample. Villages Senjicherry, Keezhaperambai and Kanagarapattu revealed a community fluorosis index (CFI) score of 0.43, 0.54 and 0.54 with 5.6%, 4.8% and 1.4% of objectionable dental fluorosis, respectively. Correlation between water fluoride content and CFI values in four villages was noted to be positively significant. Conclusion: Three out of six villages studied were in 'borderline' public health significance (CFI score 0.4-0.6). A well-designed epidemiological investigation can be undertaken to evaluate the risk factors associated with the condition in the study region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Groundnut, Arachis hypogaea L., crop is an important oil seed crop in India and is prone to attack by numerous fungal and viral diseases, among the soil-borne diseases, stem rot caused by Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc. is economically important. Incidence (86.6%) of the stem rot disease was recorded in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu, India, during the roving survey. For its management, an attempt was made to isolate bacterial endophyte from peanut seeds of different groundnut cultivars by culture-dependent analysis. Totally, 16 bacterial endophytes (endophytes groundnut (EGN) 1 to EGN 16 along with standards TNAU-Pf1 and EPC 5) were obtained and characterized through morphological, biochemical and molecular studies and also phytostimulation activities were performed. Among the isolates, EGN 1 and EGN 4 showed positive results for indole acetic acid (IAA), siderophore, phosphate solubilization and protease tests in vitro. The dual culture analysis showed inhibition rates of 60.1% (dual plate assay), 68.23% (filter paper disc assay) and 100% (triangle method of streaking and culture filtrate assay) for EGN 1 against S. rolfsii. Further, the crude metabolite assay showed 97.7% inhibition in EGN 1, followed by 87.7% in EGN 4. The roll towel study showed a high vigour index of 4286.7 in EGN 1; hence, this isolate was chosen. Further, thin-layer chromatography (TLC) analysis showed various bands at 0.72 Rf, whereas GC-MS analysis indicated the prominent peaks of hexadecanoic acid and cis-vaccenic acid that may responsible for antifungal activity. In a molecular approach, the genomic DNA of EGN 1 strain was used to amplify a 1200 bp PCR-fragment and sequenced. Short conclusion: The overall outcome of this study showed that Pseudomonas spp. EGN 1 had a great potential as a bio-stimulant and biocontrol agent to manage effectively the stem rot in peanut. Objective: Currently available gestational age scoring systems are complex and inaccurate for wider use in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), particularly in infants with neonatal encephalopathy. Here, we aimed to develop a scoring system based on physical characteristics for identifying late preterm infants from term infants., Study Design: This was a prospective observational study conducted in 2 phases- the discovery phase and validation phase. In the first phase, we examined the accuracy of 10 objective physical characteristics in a prospective cohort of 1,006 infants recruited from three hospitals in South India. A weighted scoring system and a photo card were then developed based on the six best performing characteristics which were validated in another prospective cohort of 1,004 infants., Results: The final score had a sensitivity of 66.0% (95% confidence intervals [CIs], 58.4-73.8%), specificity of 80.0% (95% CI, 77.2-82.7%), and a negative predictive value of 93.0% (95% CI, 90.5-94.5%)., Conclusion: This scoring system may have wider applications in LMIC, particularly in community settings and in infants with neonatal encephalopathy., Key Points: · This is an easily administered scoring system using physical characters to identify late preterm infants.. · The scoring is not affected by neurological injury and can be used in encephalopathic infants.. · Overall accuracy is better than previous scores encompassing the physical criteria alone.., Competing Interests: None declared., (The Author(s). Fluoride and its constituents in soil affect plant growth and public health. In this study, soil fluoride was measured for the semi-arid regions in southern India, using Sentinel-1 data in conjunction with the dual polarimetric saline-associated fluoride model (also known as fluoride model). A loss angle was estimated from laboratory-based dielectric components of soil samples with strong electrical conductivity under high and low fluoride conditions. The conductivity loss angle and real and imaginary dielectric constants were used to study fluoride salt's dielectric behavior. The imaginary dielectric component sensitive to dielectric loss could predict fluoride across large areas over time. This was statistically analyzed with R 2  = 0.86, RMSE = 1.90, and bias = 0.35 showing a promising depiction that C-band SAR data can distinguish fluoride levels over varied clay soil and soil with varying vegetation development. Moreover, the association between biomass and simulated fluoride helped to identify fluoride-tolerant and non-tolerant crops. The study found that Sorghum and Oryza sativa tolerate saline-associated fluoride, whereas Peanut and Allium do not. Background: Although therapeutic hypothermia reduces death or disability after neonatal encephalopathy in high-income countries, its safety and efficacy in low-income and middle-income countries is unclear. We aimed to examine whether therapeutic hypothermia alongside optimal supportive intensive care reduces death or moderate or severe disability after neonatal encephalopathy in south Asia., Methods: We did a multicountry open-label, randomised controlled trial in seven tertiary neonatal intensive care units in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. We enrolled infants born at or after 36 weeks of gestation with moderate or severe neonatal encephalopathy and a need for continued resuscitation at 5 min of age or an Apgar score of less than 6 at 5 min of age (for babies born in a hospital), or both, or an absence of crying by 5 min of age (for babies born at home). Using a web-based randomisation system, we allocated infants into a group receiving whole body hypothermia (33·5°C) for 72 h using a servo-controlled cooling device, or to usual care (control group), within 6 h of birth. All recruiting sites had facilities for invasive ventilation, cardiovascular support, and access to 3 Tesla MRI scanners and spectroscopy. Masking of the intervention was not possible, but those involved in the magnetic resonance biomarker analysis and neurodevelopmental outcome assessments were masked to the allocation. The primary outcome was a combined endpoint of death or moderate or severe disability at 18-22 months, assessed by the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (third edition) and a detailed neurological examination. Analysis was by intention to treat. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02387385., Findings: We screened 2296 infants between Aug 15, 2015, and Feb 15, 2019, of whom 576 infants were eligible for inclusion. After exclusions, we recruited 408 eligible infants and we assigned 202 to the hypothermia group and 206 to the control group. Primary outcome data were available for 195 (97%) of the 202 infants in the hypothermia group and 199 (97%) of the 206 control group infants. 98 (50%) infants in the hypothermia group and 94 (47%) infants in the control group died or had a moderate or severe disability (risk ratio 1·06; 95% CI 0·87-1·30; p=0·55). 84 infants (42%) in the hypothermia group and 63 (31%; p=0·022) infants in the control group died, of whom 72 (36%) and 49 (24%; p=0·0087) died during neonatal hospitalisation. Five serious adverse events were reported: three in the hypothermia group (one hospital readmission relating to pneumonia, one septic arthritis, and one suspected venous thrombosis), and two in the control group (one related to desaturations during MRI and other because of endotracheal tube displacement during transport for MRI). No adverse events were considered causally related to the study intervention., Interpretation: Therapeutic hypothermia did not reduce the combined outcome of death or disability at 18 months after neonatal encephalopathy in low-income and middle-income countries, but significantly increased death alone. Purpose: The Hijra community is a cultural and gender grouping in South Asia broadly similar to western transgender communities, but with literature suggesting some differences in gender experience and patterns of psychosocial adversity. The present study aims to describe patterns of mental illness and psychoactive substance use in Hijra subjects and study their association with gender experience and psychosocial adversity., Methods: Fifty self-identified Hijras availing HIV-prevention services in New Delhi, India, were interviewed. Data on mental disorders, psychoactive substance use, quality of life, discrimination, empowerment, violence and gender identity were assessed using structured instruments., Results: Subjects were mostly in their mid-twenties, and had joined the Hijra community in their mid-teens. More subjects (46%) were involved in begging than in traditional Hijra roles (38%). Sex work was reported by 28% subjects. The rates of lifetime mental illness was 38%, most commonly alcohol abuse (26%); others had anxiety or depressive disorders (8% each), somatoform disorders (6%) and bulimia nervosa ( n = 1). Disempowerment was mostly experienced in domains of autonomy and community participation; 52% had experienced sexual or psychological violence. Discrimination was attributed to gender (100%), appearance (28%) or sexual orientation (28%). There were negative correlations between the physical domain of WHO-QOL and physical violence and depression scores; and between discrimination and WHO-QOL environmental, physical and psychological domains., Conclusions: This Hijra group showed high rates of mental disorder and substance involvement, related to QOL domains and experiences of discrimination and disempowerment.

Background: Leprosy and leprosy-related stigma can have a major impact on psychosocial wellbeing of persons affected and their family members. Resilience is a process that incorporates many of the core skills and abilities which may enable people to address stigma and discrimination. The current study aimed to develop and pilot an intervention to strengthen individual and family resilience against leprosy-related discrimination., Methodology: We used a quasi-experimental, before-after study design with a mixed methods approach. The 10-week family-based intervention was designed to strengthen the resilience of individuals and families by enhancing their protective abilities and capacity to overcome adversity. The study was conducted in two sites, urban areas in Telangana state, and in rural areas in Odisha state, India. Persons affected and their family members were included using purposive sampling. Two questionnaires were used pre-and post-intervention: the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC, maximum score 100, with high scores reflecting greater resilience) and the WHOQOL-BREF (maximum score of 130, with higher scores reflecting higher quality of life). In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted post-intervention. Data were collected at baseline, a few weeks after completion of the intervention, and in the Odisha cohort again at six months after completion. Paired t-tests measured differences pre- and post- intervention. Qualitative data were thematically analysed., Findings: Eighty participants across 20 families were included in the study (23 persons affected and 57 family members). We found a significant increase in CD-RISC scores for persons affected and family members from Odisha state (baseline 46.5, first follow-up 77.0, second follow-up 70.0), this improvement was maintained at six-month follow-up. There was no increase in CD-RISC scores post-intervention among participants from Telangana state. WHOQOL-BREF scores were significantly higher at follow-up for persons affected in both states, and for family members in Odisha state. No families dropped out of the study. In the qualitative feedback, all participants described drawing benefit from the programme. Participants especially appreciated the social dimensions of the intervention., Conclusion: This pilot study showed that the 10-week family-based intervention to strengthen resilience among persons affected by leprosy and their family members was feasible, and has the potential to improve resilience and quality of life. Objectives: Use of various psychoactive substances can influence outcomes of patients on opioid agonist treatment (OAT). While use of alcohol and cocaine has shown to adversely affect OAT results, associated cannabis use shows mixed results. This study aimed to assess the pattern of cannabis use among opioid-dependent patients maintained on buprenorphine. Additionally, the study compared the dose of buprenorphine, opioid-related craving and withdrawals, productivity, and also quality of life between those with and without recent (past 90-day) cannabis use., Methods: We collected data on demographic and drug use details in 100 randomly selected adult male patients attending a community drug treatment clinic, who were stabilized on buprenorphine for more than 3 months. Other measures included scores on World Health Organization (WHO)-Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Tool and WHO-Quality of Life-Brief (WHOQOL-Bref) version., Results: The average duration of maintenance treatment with buprenorphine was 96 months, with excellent compliance for buprenorphine (86.92 ± 9.58 days in 90 days). Thirty-five per cent had used cannabis in past 90 days, with lifetime use of cannabis in 77%. Participants using cannabis currently were on lower doses of buprenorphine (mean dose per day: 7.9 mg vs 8.9 mg; P = 0.04). Yet, there was no significant difference in the rates of opioid use or opioid withdrawals and craving between the 2 groups. Compliance to OAT, number of days of employment, daily earning, and WHOQOL-Bref scores in all domains were comparable between those with and without cannabis use. Duration of cannabis use, current use of alcohol, and dose of buprenorphine predicted current cannabis use in multivariable logistic regression analysis., Conclusions: Cannabis use does not negatively influence opioid outcomes among patients receiving buprenorphine maintenance treatment. There is no difference in productivity and quality of life between individuals maintained on buprenorphine with and without current cannabis use.

The genus Malassezia comprises of extremely lipophilic yeasts secreting lipases as a vital factor for survival. They are emerging as opportunistic pathogens in medical microbiology and dermatology by causing recurring and recalcitrant infection. Combinatorial therapy is a constructive way to combat infectious diseases. In that prospect, totally 16 Indian medicinal plants were screened, among which a maximum degree of antimicrobial activity was ascertained in Embelia ribes. Subsequently embelin was identified as the bioactive principle with antagonistic potential by comparative antimicrobial assay and FTIR analysis. The MIC of embelin was determined as 400 μg/ml exhibiting ∼75% of growth inhibition. Further, a fungistatic activity based on anti-lipase potential (65-89%) of embelin has been clearly substantiated by XTT and lipase assay. In addition, embelin exhibited a synergistic effect with the antifungal drug ketoconazole (KTZ) against four different Malassezia spp. with FIC index of 0.5. Therefore, the combinations of embelin and KTZ may represent a promising therapeutic regimen to treat Malassezia infections with subjugated clinical and environmental toxicity. Background & Objective: Low birth weight (LBW) babies are a vulnerable group and represent two outcomes--preterm birth (preterm LBW) and term with intrauterine growth retardation (term LBW). LBW babies are considered to have low nutrient reserve, but the extent of deficiency as compared to the normal babies and the differences between preterm LBW and term LBW are unclear. This study was carried out to look at key anthropometric, biochemical and clinical (ABC) parameters of LBW babies, both preterm and term, in comparison to a control group of term normal weight babies., Methods: A group of 500 babies was selected at birth from a tertiary care teaching hospital and categorized into LBW (n = 251) with preterm LBW (n = 59), term LBW (n = 192) and term controls (n = 249). Two controls were dropped as tests could not be performed in the available cord blood sample. Key anthropometric and biochemical parameters were measured. Socio-economic status, age, parity, height and pre-delivery haemoglobin of the mothers were also recorded., Results: The maternal characteristics were comparable in the three groups. Socio-economically, majority of them belonged to lower middle or upper lower class (Class III and IV) representing the non affluent. All the anthropometric measurements and nutrients measured namely total protein, albumin, cholesterol, triglycerides, calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron were significantly lower in LBW babies compared to term control babies. These values were lowest in preterm LBW followed by term LBW. Total iron binding capacity (TIBC) showed inverse association with iron. Some of the babies including control babies had protein, albumin, calcium and iron below the normal range and mean albumin, calcium and iron levels were below the normal range in all the three subsets., Interpretation & Conclusion: Preterm and term LBW babies are born with significantly lower nutrient reserves at birth compared to term control babies. Normal weight babies from the non affluent sections also have low nutrients especially albumin, calcium and iron. As these levels are liable to be further lowered by recurrent infections and inappropriate feeding habits, nutritional surveillance, extra feeding and supplements like calcium and iron are recommended for such vulnerable babies to promote optimum growth and to prevent deficiencies. This is important as currently, there are no clear or uniform recommendations for extra feeding and nutrient supplements to LBW babies and no supplements other than exclusive breast feeding are recommended for term normal birth weight babies. Extra nutritional inputs for LBW and selected non affluent babies along with care of the prospective and prenatal mothers for ensuring adequate transfer of nutrients to the offspring seem necessary. Such interventions can be integrated with the existing health care programmes to reach all the beneficiaries.

Introduction: Low Birth Weight (LBW) is a key determinant of neonatal mortality, morbidity, subsequent growth and development as well as early onset of adulthood diseases. It represents a conflation of two outcomes-preterm- and term 'light for date' (LFD) babies. This study looks at key auxologic, biochemical and clinical (ABC) parameters of a cohort of LBW babies, both preterm- and term in comparison to a group of normal-term (control) babies. An attempt was also made to see how these parameters were at the end of a 2 year follow-up period with the currently available interventions., Materials and Methods: A cohort of 500 babies was selected at birth from a tertiary care teaching hospital in Kerala, India, key ABC indices were measured including relevant maternal data. The initial biochemical measurements were done using umbilical cord blood. Currently recommended nutritional interventions were provided to all the normal and LBW babies. At the end of 2 years, the measurements were repeated in a subset of babies available for follow-up (n = 147)., Results: From the cohort of 500 babies, two had to be eliminated as biochemical parameters could not be done due to technical reasons from the available umbilical cord blood. They were categorized into three groups: preterm-LBW (11.85%), term-LBW (38.55%) and normal-term controls (49.6%). The maternal characteristics like socio-economic status, maternal weight, height, BMI and hemoglobin levels were comparable in the three subsets. All of them belonged to middle or low-socio-economic status representing the non-affluent. In the initial group (n = 498), all the auxologic measurements and the nutrients measured namely, total protein, albumin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron levels were significantly lower (p < 0.05) among LBW, lowest in preterm followed by term-LBW, compared to term controls. Total iron binding capacity showed inverse correlation with iron level. Protein, albumin, calcium and iron levels were low in many babies, and mean calcium and iron levels were below the normal range in all the three subsets reflecting reduced transfer from the mother. At the end of 2 years, calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron were significantly lower in preterm- and term-LBW (p < 0.05) compared to controls and mean value of serum calcium continued to be below the normal range in all the three subsets. At final follow-up, majority of the LBW babies had varying grades of malnutrition and only 1 (7%) of preterm-LBW subset and 13 (28%) of term-LBW subset had optimum catch up growth resulting in normal nutritional status with the existing interventions. Three (3.5%) of the normal babies were noted to slip down to malnutrition at the end of 2 years., Conclusions: Preterm- and term-LBW babies are born with significantly lower nutrient reserves at birth compared to term-normal babies, this was lowest among the preterm babies. As this reserve may be further lowered by recurrent infections and inappropriate feeding habits, there is a need for special feeding and nutrient supplements in this group. Calcium and iron levels were suboptimum at birth and calcium levels remained suboptimum even at the end of 2 years in all three subsets including controls in this non-affluent group. Currently available interventions may prevent the occurrence of overt clinical nutrient deficiencies, but do not ensure optimum growth, even among normal birth weight babies as some of these babies were seen to slip into the pool of malnutrition subsequently. Specialized nutritional surveillance and supplements are recommended for LBW babies to promote optimum growth and prevent subclinical nutrient deficiencies. Infant feeding practices should be strengthened and integrated with the existing health care programs to reach all the beneficiaries. Along with the existing special supplementation programs like iron folic acid, vitamin A, iodine etc., calcium supplementation should also be considered. It is also essential to concentrate on the girl child, the adolescent girl, prospective mother and prenatal mother to ensure optimum nutrition and nutrient transfer to future offsprings.

CARE India with its UP Office has initiated demand generation and acceptability of services for reproductive health and birth spacing services at community level in two districts in the state of Uttar Pradesh. A total of 3,49,000 women of reproductive age will benefit from participation in program activities over the next five years. Out of total surveyed population of 3662, 798 women of reproductive age group were identified of whom 272 were found to be symptomatically positive in relation of STDs/RTIs giving the overall prevalence rate of 34%. Clinical as well as the microbiological examination was carried out on 193 of these 272 women in field conditions. Those found clinically and/or microbiologically positive were provided treatment and preventive advice. Total of 150 (77.7%) women were diagnosed on the basis of symptoms (syndromic approach) and 151 (78.2%) were diagnosed on the basis of clinical examinations. However, 137 (70.9%) were confirmed microbiologically positive. A large extent was found in the age group of 15 to 24 years. Confirmed cases were comparatively less among nulliparous women (63.6%) than multipara (73.2%) cases. 64.1% women were having watery discharge while 29.1% were having complaint of curd discharge. The discharge was offensive in only 1.9% cases while 4.9% reported mixed discharge. 54.4% women complaining of vaginal discharge were suffering from PID. The discharge were either bacterial alone (26.1%) or bacterial mixed with candidiasis (16.5%) or trichomoniasis (8.7%). Compared to syndromic approach, an improvement in the sensitivity (81.8%) and predictive accuracy (74.1%) was noted when cases were detected with the help of clinical examination.

(1) The positivity of HBsAg was 4% (75/1819) whereas anti HCV was present only in 0.75% (27/3574) of blood donors. (2) 5.3% (4/75) of hospital staff had HBsAg alone in their blood samples. One doctor, one Staff nurse, one Lascar and one Sanitary worker were positive for HBsAg. None of them were positive for anti HBcIgm and anti-HCV. (3) 29% (31/115) of suspected hepatitis cases were positive for any one of the viral markers or both. 21% (15/72) of males and 14% (6/43) of females were positive for HBsAg. Whereas only 4% (3/72) of males and 2% (1/43) of females were positive for anti HCW. Both HBsAg and anti HCV were found in 8% (6/72) of males only. The age group predominantly, i.e. in 29 out of 31 cases found positive for HBsAg and/or anti HCV, was above 15 years. Two remaining HBsAg positive cases belonged to the 5 to 14 years age group. 71% (84/115) of suspected hepatitis cases were negative for both HBsAg and anti HCV.

The cancer registration system in India, and an appropriate computer program to validate the cancer patient data it generates, are described, with the resource inputs, and outputs of research, training, awareness creation and cancer control, in the context of local health care systems. Computer packages already available mostly address the type of data obtainable from western health care systems. The same factors that limit health care systems in India, and probably most other developing countries--inadequate health care facilities, skeletal medical records systems, meagre and unavailable vital statistics, few trained staff, funding and computer facilities--also limit the data sent to the National Cancer Registry Programme. The computer program we developed checks for the reliability and validity of various cancer diagnostic, spread, therapeutic and outcome variables. The program is in HIBASIC for a CPM operating system with a minimum of 64 kB memory, adaptable to MS-DOS systems, population-based cancer registry data, and perhaps to other types of chronic disease registries, with relevant modifications. Since reliable cancer registry data are needed for effective cancer control measures, this program may help in such efforts in developing countries.
