A significant consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic in higher education has been the almost universal switch to a completely online modality of teaching. This work evaluates the efforts taken in teaching a freshmen general chemistry course at IISER Tirupati to students in India during the pandemic. Instructors used a multipronged approach to achieve course outcomes: PowerPoint lectures interspersed with chats and polls for basic content in topics such as behavior of gases, solutions, or introduction to periodic properties and chemical bonding while using a chalkboard or a digital device for problem solving modules and stereochemistry topics. Analysis of student surveys provided valuable insight into the perceived effectiveness of our teaching strategies, learning resources, and assessments. However, they also indicated challenges and concerns from the perspectives of both the students and the instructors. Overall, students expressed positive feedback on effective learning in the online mode; but given a choice, both students and instructors prefer in-class face-to-face learning. This report on our collective experience will hopefully guide faculty in designing their strategies for online courses in chemistry in the future to enhance student learning and engagement.

Background: The Test of Mastication and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS) is a reliable tool for assessing chewing and swallowing in healthy adults, using commercially available crackers. TOMASS‐Children (TOMASS‐C) is the paediatric version of TOMASS. Objective: The present study aimed to establish normative data for TOMASS‐C using a validated regional commercial cracker among healthy individuals aged between 6–20 years of India. Methods: 327 healthy individuals between 6–20 years were recruited in a cross‐sectional study design following a convenient sampling procedure. Participants consumed one validated regional cracker and the procedure was video recorded. Data were stratified according to age groups (6–7, 8–9, 10–13, 14–17 and 18–20 years) and sex (boys and girls). Two Speech Language Pathologists independently analysed the video recordings to derive discrete bites, masticatory cycles, swallows and total swallow time indices. Using them, time/swallow, masticatory cycles/bite, swallows/bite and time/bite were calculated. Results: All parameters of TOMASS‐C had moderate to good (0.6–0.85) test–retest reliability and moderate to excellent (0.69–0.99) inter‐rater reliability at p >.000. Younger participants took more bites, chewed more times and swallowed more frequently with longer chewing and swallowing time. Boys exhibited a lower number of swallows, shorter swallow time and reduced total masticatory time at p >.05. Additionally, girls demonstrated fewer bites and chewing cycles compared to boys at p >.05. Conclusion: TOMASS‐C using a validated regional cracker was feasible and reliable. Normative data established for healthy boys and girls between 6–20 years offers much‐needed quantitative data to objectively delineate individuals with and without chewing and swallowing solid food difficulties. A GIS-based approach was used in this study to assess 10 years of land-use change in the lower Shivalik landscape of the Western Himalayas, India. The landscape encompasses two major protected areas which are home to a thriving population of large mammals. The main objective was to identify the changes in the land use pattern, specifically after forming a new tiger reserve in the landscape. Landsat 8 and 4 imagery were used for the time series analysis for the years 2018, 2013, and 2008, respectively. The change was calculated using nine land use classes, with mixed forest showing the highest change value, followed by agriculture, grassland, and scrub. The dense forest area increased immensely after the formation of the new tiger reserve. The results for dense and mixed forest classes also identified less fragmentation in the number of patches during the same time. Even though most of the landscape is within the boundaries of a protected area, the change in land use forms is noticeable. As development activities continue to expand, this region will face increased strain, which will impact the area's natural biodiversity. Background: Eighty-five percent of infants with congenital nephrotic syndrome (CNS) and 66% with infantile NS (INS) are likely to have a monogenic etiology. There exists a significant genetic variability between different regions and ethnic groups. This study aimed to determine the genetic defects in children with CNS and INS by establishing a registry in western India. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, pediatric nephrologists from 13 private and government institutions shared relevant clinical data and details of the genetic evaluation of children presenting with NS within the first year of life. Results: The median age at presentation was 9 months (range 1–23, IQR 3–13 months), history of consanguinity between parents existed in 14 patients (34%), family history of similar illness in 6 (15%), and extra-renal manifestations in 17 (41%). Twenty-five (61%) were confirmed to have a monogenic etiology. NPHS1 gene was the most implicated (9/25) followed by PLCE1 (5/25). There were 12 variants of uncertain significance (VUS) involving 10 genes (10/25, 40%), and no definite genetic abnormality was found in 4 (25%). A re-analysis of these VUS attempted 2–3 years later facilitated reclassification of 7/12 (58%); increasing the diagnostic yield from 61 to 68.2%. Conclusions: Consistent with worldwide data, variants in NPHS1 gene were the most common cause of NS in infancy; however, PLCE1 was implicated more frequently in our cohort. NUP93 and COL4A3 were reported in early onset NS for the first time. Reclassification of VUS should be attempted, if feasible, since it may lead to a useful revision of diagnosis. This paper explores how research advisory groups can be a vehicle for youth activism. It draws on our experiences with young activists, aged 15–26 years, in India and Brazil, who were advisors on a research project focused on youth livelihoods in cities. These young people played a vital role in supporting youth researchers, identifying research themes and developing engagement and advocacy strategies. Through this paper, we explore how the Youth Expert Group advisory model evolved differently in each location and examine how these were shaped by the context, the 'adult' research team and the youth activists themselves. Biological invasion is regarded as one of the most important disturbance parameters and threats for sustaining biodiversity. Global warming, industrialization, and open niche created due to the expansion of development initiatives contribute to the successful spread of invasive species around the world. The contributions of various biotic and abiotic factors in different spatial scales are crucial for an invasive to establish in its invaded area. We assessed the spatial distribution of invasion by Lantana camara in the Corbett Tiger Reserve and Rajaji Tiger Reserve within the Terai Arc Landscape Complex. The presence locations of Lantana were assessed within 10 m × 10 m plots (n = 666), and information on habitat variables such as tree density, canopy cover, shrub density, shrub cover, and anthropogenic pressures were collected. We also synthesized information on climate and topography data of the region from global databases. Confirmatory factor analysis was done using the presence of Lantana as response variable and habitat, anthropogenic, climatic, and topographic variables as predictor variables. We found that for Rajaji Tiger Reserve, habitat and anthropogenic variables were the major influencing factors for Lantana invasion, whereas, for Corbett Tiger Reserve, climate and topography were the major determining factors. Mean diurnal temperature, precipitation of warmest quarter, lopping, and logging were the factors determining the Lantana invasion in the landscape. The influence of different factors affecting the invasion of Lantana differs between Rajaji Tiger reserve and Corbett Tiger Reserve. The result of the study will be helpful for formulating effective policy intervention to reduce the invasion of Lantana in these ecologically important tiger reserves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present updated, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines from the Indian Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ISPN) for the management of urinary tract infection (UTI) and primary vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) in children. These guidelines conform to international standards; Institute of Medicine and AGREE checklists were used to ensure transparency, rigor, and thoroughness in the guideline development. In view of the robust methodology, these guidelines are applicable globally for the management of UTI and VUR. Seventeen recommendations and 18 clinical practice points have been formulated. Some of the key recommendations and practice points are as follows. Urine culture with > 104 colony forming units/mL is considered significant for the diagnosis of UTI in an infant if the clinical suspicion is strong. Urine leukocyte esterase and nitrite can be used as an alternative screening test to urine microscopy in a child with suspected UTI. Acute pyelonephritis can be treated with oral antibiotics in a non-toxic infant for 7–10 days. An acute-phase DMSA scan is not recommended in the evaluation of UTI. Micturating cystourethrography (MCU) is indicated in children with recurrent UTI, abnormal kidney ultrasound, and in patients below 2 years of age with non-E. coli UTI. Dimercaptosuccinic acid scan (DMSA scan) is indicated only in children with recurrent UTI and high-grade (3–5) VUR. Antibiotic prophylaxis is not indicated in children with a normal urinary tract after UTI. Prophylaxis is recommended to prevent UTI in children with bladder bowel dysfunction (BBD) and those with high-grade VUR. In children with VUR, prophylaxis should be stopped if the child is toilet trained, free of BBD, and has not had a UTI in the last 1 year. Surgical intervention in high-grade VUR can be considered for parental preference over antibiotic prophylaxis or in children developing recurrent breakthrough febrile UTIs on antibiotic prophylaxis. Predicting the temporal and spatial patterns of South Asian monsoon rainfall within a season is of critical importance due to its impact on agriculture, water availability, and flooding. The monsoon intraseasonal oscillation (MISO) is a robust northwardpropagating mode that determines the active and break phases of the monsoon and much of the regional distribution of rainfall. However, dynamical atmospheric forecast models predict this mode poorly. Data-driven methods for MISO prediction have shown more skill, but only predict the portion of the rainfall corresponding to MISO rather than the full rainfall signal. Here, we combine state-of-the-art ensemble precipitation forecasts from a high-resolution atmospheric model with data-driven forecasts of MISO. The ensemble members of the detailed atmospheric model are projected onto a lower-dimensional subspace corresponding to the MISO dynamics and are then weighted according to their distance from the data-drivenMISOforecast in this subspace. We thereby achieve improvements in rainfall forecasts over India, as well as the broader monsoon region, at 10-to 30-d lead times, an interval that is generally considered to be a predictability gap. The temporal correlation of rainfall forecasts is improved by up to 0.28 in this time range. Our results demonstrate the potential of leveraging the predictability of intraseasonal oscillations to improve extended-range forecasts; more generally, they point toward a future of combining dynamical and data-driven forecasts for Earth system prediction. TRACT Studies focusing on the safety and common side effects of vaccines play a crucial role in enhancing public acceptance of vaccination. Research is scarce regarding the usage of COVID-19 vaccines and the side effects experienced by health professions students in India and other countries. This study aimed to document self-reported side effects associated with COVID-19 vaccination among medical and dental students of six medical and dental colleges and teaching hospitals in four states (Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and West Bengal) of India. A cross-sectional survey using purposive sampling of medical and dental students was conducted from 26 April to 26 May 2021. Data was collected using a Google Forms questionnaire capturing information regarding receiving COVID-19 vaccines, side effects and symptoms, onset and duration of symptoms, use of treatment to alleviate symptoms, awareness of haematologic risks associated with vaccination, and side effects from previous (non- COVID-19) vaccinations. The majority (94.5%) of participants received both doses of the Covishield/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. Among participants (nD492), 45.3% (nD223) reported one or more side effects. The most frequently reported side effects were soreness of the injected arm (80.3%), tiredness (78.5%), fever (71.3%), headache (64.1%), and hypersomnia (58.7%). The two most common severe symptoms were fever (14.8%) and headache (13%). Most side effects appeared on the day of vaccination: soreness of the injection site (57%), fever (43.1%), and tiredness (42.6%). Most reported symptoms persisted for one to three days_soreness of the injection site (53%), fever (47.1%), and headache (42.6%). Logistic regression showed that women were almost 85% less likely to report side effects. The study's findings corroborate the safety of the Covishield/AstraZeneca vaccine's first dose, evidenced by the relatively minor and transient nature of the side effects. However, the study underscores the necessity for ongoing research to assess the long-term impacts of COVID-19 vaccines, especially in the context of booster doses, thereby contributing to the global understanding of vaccine safety and efficacy. Background: Three types of primary hyperoxaluria (PH) are recognized. However, data on PH type 2 (PH2), caused by defects in the GRHPR gene, are limited. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of patients < 18 years of age with genetically-proven PH2 from seven centres across India to identify the age of onset, patterns of clinical presentation, short-term outcomes and genetic profile, and to determine if genotype–phenotype correlation exists. Results: We report 20 patients (all with nephrolithiasis or nephrocalcinosis) diagnosed to have PH2 at a median (IQR) age of 21.5 (7, 60) months. Consanguinity and family history of kidney stones were elicited in nine (45%) and eight (40%) patients, respectively. The median (IQR) serum creatinine at PH2 diagnosis was 0.45 (0.29, 0.56) mg/dL with the corresponding estimated glomerular filtration rate being 83 (60, 96) mL/1.73 m2/min. A mutational hotspot (c.494 G > A), rare in Caucasians, was identified in 12 (60%) patients. An intronic splice site variant (c.735-1G > A) was noted in five (25%) patients. Four (20%) patients required surgical intervention for stone removal. Major adverse kidney events (mortality or chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages 3–5) were noted in six (30%) patients at a median (IQR) follow-up of 12 (6, 27) months. Risk factors for CKD progression and genotype–phenotype correlation could not be established. Conclusions: PH2 should no longer be considered an innocuous disease, but rather a potentially aggressive disease with early age of presentation, and possible rapid progression to CKD stages 3–5 in childhood in some patients. Background: In pediatric steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS), calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) are recommended as first-line therapy, with efficacy ranging between 60 and 80%, implying a substantial proportion will exhibit CNI resistance. Which alternate immunosuppressive therapy should be used in non-genetic pediatric SRNS exhibiting CNI resistance is especially relevant in low- to middle-income countries (LMIC), where the prohibitive costs of certain drugs such as monoclonal antibodies often determine therapy choice. Methods: The primary objective was to assess the efficacy of intravenous cyclophosphamide in a proportion of children aged 1–18 years with CNI-resistant SRNS with a complete response (CR) or partial response (PR) at 6 months from commencement of pulse therapy. The secondary objectives were to assess the proportion and profile of infections and adverse effects. Results: Of 90 children with idiopathic SRNS presenting between January 2013 and December 2022, 29 (32.2%) had CNI resistance and were enrolled. They were administered monthly intravenous cyclophosphamide pulses (6 pulses). Median (IQR) duration of follow-up was 48 (29.5, 63.5) months. At the end of 6 months of cyclophosphamide therapy, 13 (44.8%) attained CR and 4 (13.8%) attained PR, with an overall cyclophosphamide success rate of 58.6%. The efficacy of intravenous cyclophosphamide was higher in secondary (9/10; 90%) versus primary CNI resistance (8/19; 42.1%) (p = 0.029). Three children (3/29; 10.3%) developed systemic infections within 12 months of initiation of cyclophosphamide therapy, similar to the rate of systemic infections among children receiving CNI for SRNS management (6/41; 14.6%) (p = 0.85). Conclusions: It is prudent to try intravenous cyclophosphamide in CNI-resistant SRNS in LMIC, given the reasonable cost and good efficacy rates (58.6%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 ( Corona Virus Disease 2019) was a life-changing pandemic with impact on social, environmental, health, and economic issues. Various inflammatory and hematological biomarkers studied individually or in combination in the literature have shown significant results with regard to COVID-19 pathology, severity, and prognosis. Yet the question of interest is how covid-19 inflammatory cascade impacts the interlink between the biomarkers during different stages. This study aims to retrospectively analyse ferritin, albumin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, O-dimer, Lactate Dehydrogenase (LOH), C Reactive Protein (CRP) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels between two groups based on COVID-19 severity. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted with laboratory data of COVID-19 patients admitted at Sri Ramachandra Medical College Hospital, India. The sample size was 104 (Group1: severe disease, n=52; Group-2: mild disease, n=52). After normality testing, data were compared between the two groups followed by correlation analysis between the variables. A p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. On comparison, Group 2 ( severe COVID-19 disease) showed significant difference in the levels of all the biomarkers (p<0.005) except Creatinine (p<0.128) when compared with Group 1 (mild COVID-19 disease). Significant correlation was obtained between all biomarkers (p<0.005) except creatinine. The correlation analysis primarily explains the inflammatory cascade involved in disease. Ferritin appears to have a standalone effect on disease severity, progression, organ dysfunction. This understanding can be used to provide better and more timely care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cancer survivors experience a decrement in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) resulting from the disease as well as adverse effects of therapy. We evaluated the HRQoL of cancer patients, stratified by primary cancer site, stage, treatment response and associated adverse events, along with its determinants. Methods: Data were collected from 12,148 patients, sampled from seven purposively chosen leading cancer hospitals in India, to elicit HRQoL using the EuroQol questionnaire comprising of 5-dimensions and 5-levels (EQ-5D-5L). Multiple linear regression was used to determine the association between HRQoL and various socio-demographic as well as clinical characteristics. Results: Majority outpatients (78.4%) and inpatients (81.2%) had solid cancers. The disease was found to be more prevalent among outpatients (37.5%) and inpatients (40.5%) aged 45–60 years and females (49.3–58.3%). Most patients were found to be in stage III (40–40.6%) or stage IV (29.4–37.3%) at the time of recruitment. The mean EQ-5D-5 L utility score was significantly higher among outpatients [0.630 (95% CI: 0.623, 0.637)] as compared to inpatients [0.553 (95% CI: 0.539, 0.567)]. The HRQoL decreased with advancing cancer stage among both inpatients and outpatients, respectively [stage IV: (0.516 & 0.557); stage III (0.609 & 0.689); stage II (0.677 & 0.713); stage I (0.638 & 0.748), p value < 0.001]. The outpatients on hormone therapy (B = 0.076) showed significantly better HRQoL in comparison to patients on chemotherapy. However, palliative care (B=-0.137) and surgery (B=-0.110) were found to be associated with significantly with poorer HRQoL paralleled to chemotherapy. The utility scores among outpatients ranged from 0.305 (bone cancer) to 0.782 (Leukemia). Among hospitalized cases, the utility score was lowest for multiple myeloma (0.255) and highest for testicular cancer (0.771). Conclusion: Older age, lower educational status, chemotherapy, palliative care and surgery, advanced cancer stage and progressive disease were associated with poor HRQoL. Context: Adolescent suicides are a significant public health concern in India and understanding the intersecting perspectives becomes imperative for the prevention of various mental health concerns. Aim: Assessing perceptions of various key stakeholders, that is, mental health experts, school and college teachers, and District Mental Health Program staff about peer-led strength building programs for suicide prevention. Settings and Design: A cross-sectional qualitative design using two Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with mental health experts and teachers and one FGD with DMHP staff was conducted. The sample comprised 45 participants from Bengaluru urban district. Materials and Methods: The data were analyzed manually by the method of direct content analysis, and themes were determined using existing literature. Results: The teachers and the DMHP highlighted the need for an intensive training program/module that is necessary to be developed in order to train the peer leaders first. The mental health experts opined that creating a network will help in easy identification of the cases and appropriate treatment could be provided without delays. Conclusions: This study indicated that suicide is a preventable public health emergency and inaccessibility to existing as well as proper support systems was perceived as a major concern. Objectives: The incidence of young‐onset oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is growing, even among non‐smokers/drinkers. The effects of adverse histopathological features on long‐term oncologic outcomes between the young and old are controversial and confounded by significant heterogeneity. Few studies have evaluated the socio‐economic impact of premature mortality from OSCC. Our study seeks to quantify these differences and their economic impact on society. Materials and Methods: Four hundred and seventy‐eight young (<45 years) and 1660 old patients (≥45 years) with OSCC were studied. Logistic regression determined predictors of recurrence and death. Survival analysis was calculated via the Kaplan–Meier method. A separate health economic analysis was conducted for India and Singapore. Years of Potential Productive Life Lost (YPPLL) were estimated with the Human Capital Approach, and premature mortality cost was derived using population‐level data. Results: Adverse histopathological features were seen more frequently in young OSCC: PNI (42.9% vs. 35%, p = 0.002), LVI (22.4% vs. 17.3%, p = 0.013) and ENE (36% vs. 24.5%, p < 0.001). Although 5‐year OS/DSS were similar, the young cohort had received more intensive adjuvant therapy (CCRT 26.9% vs. 16.6%, p < 0.001). Among Singaporean males, the premature mortality cost per death was US $396,528, and per YPPLL was US $45,486. This was US $397,402 and US $38,458 for females. Among Indian males, the premature mortality cost per death was US $30,641, and per YPPLL was US $595. This was US $ 21,038 and US $305 for females. Conclusion: Young‐onset OSCC is an aggressive disease, mitigated by the ability to receive intensive adjuvant treatment. From our loss of productivity analysis, the socio‐economic costs from premature mortality are substantial. Early cancer screening and educational outreach campaigns should be tailored to this cohort. The incidence of breast cancer is increasing rapidly in urban India due to the changing lifestyle and exposure to risk factors. Diagnosis at an advanced stage and in younger women are the most concerning issues of breast cancer in India. Lack of awareness and social taboos related to cancer diagnosis make women feel hesitant to seek timely medical advice. As almost half of women develop breast cancer at an age younger than 50 years, breast cancer diagnosis poses a huge financial burden on the household and impacts the entire family. Moreover, inaccessibility, unaffordability, and high out-of-pocket expenditure make this situation grimmer. Women find it difficult to get quality cancer care closer to their homes and end up traveling long distances for seeking treatment. Significant differences in the cancer epidemiology compared to the west make the adoption of western breast cancer management guidelines challenging for Indian women. In this article, we intend to provide a comprehensive review of the management of breast cancer from diagnosis to treatment for both early and advanced stages from the perspective of low-middle-income countries. Starting with a brief introduction to epidemiology and guidelines for diagnostic modalities (imaging and pathology), treatment has been discussed for early breast cancer (EBC), locally advanced, and MBC. In-depth information on loco-regional and systemic therapy has been provided focusing on standard treatment protocols as well as scenarios where treatment can be de-escalated or escalated. Millets are the staple food for millions in Asian and several African countries. They are rich in dietary fiber, micronutrients, and beneficial phytochemicals. This study attempted to understand the consumption pattern of millets among south Indian adults in Chennai using a validated semi quantitative questionnaire which was administered telephonically. Purposive random sampling method was adopted for obtaining data from 100 millet consumers. The study results were analyzed using chi-square test, oneway analysis of variance, and correlation analysis. Equal percent of participants (41%) consumed millets 1-3 times a week and 1-3 times / month. Respondents considered millets nutritious and healthy as the main reason for consumption. Monthly income and family size significantly influenced frequency of consumption of millets. With reference to income groups, respondents belonging to income group >Rs. 50,000/month showed the highest percentage of frequency of consumption of millets, when compared to other income groups. Most consumers felt millets were affordable. Kali (stiff porridge/balls, kanji (porridge), pongal, upma, and biscuits were the most sought-after choices. Majority of the consumers combined other grains especially pulses in millet preparations such as pongal and kichidi. Finger millet preparations were the most commonly consumed millet-based preparation among all income groups or it could be concluded that consumers have a positive attitude toward millets for consumption and voiced the need for development of ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat value-added millet products such as millet dosa batter, noodles, flakes, breads, and millet-based beverages, for promoting consumers' health and fitness. In India, the rice paddy is cultivated as one or two crops per year using synthetic fertilizers and organic manures. Although the application of agrochemicals enhances the soil's heavy metals, the influence of cultivation patterns on the metal accumulation in rice paddy soil is not documented. Such information could provide a basis for controlling heavy metals in rice paddy soil. Therefore, the investigation was carried out to assess the influence of cultivation patterns on heavy metal accumulation. The study was made during the cultivation and noncultivation periods of single and double cropping patterns. The heavy metals viz. Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cr, and Pb were analyzed in soil after acid extraction using AAS. The result revealed that, in both cropping patterns, the heavy metals content was high during the noncultivation period compared to cultivation period, and only Cu and Pb showed significant differences between the periods (Single cropping F1,25 = 7.291, p = 0.012 and F1,25 = 7.820, p = 0.010; double cropping F1,25 = 9.242, p = 0.005 and F1,25 = 7.746, p = 0.010 respectively). Compared to single cropping, Zn, Cu, Mn, and Pb contents were high in double cropping. The Mn, Ni, and Cr content showed significant differences between the cropping pattern (Mn: F1,55 = 18.20, p = 0.0001; Ni: F1,55 = 5.764, p = 0.020; Cr: F1,55 = 4.283, p = 0.043). Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) (Zingiberaceae), is native to south west India. Water stress is the most common adverse environmental condition which severely affects crop productivity. Here we have analysed morphology, stomatal density, relative water content, electrolyte leakage, epicuticular wax content and rhizome yield of 50 elite turmeric genotypes for identification of genotypes with differential response (tolerance and susceptibility) to water stress. Results showed that water stress during rhizome development stage (90-120 days after planting) significantly decreased the leaf relative water content and increased membrane permeability. Epicuticular wax content varied significantly among the genotypes. Genotypes with lower leaf area, higher relative water content, lesser electrolyte leakage, higher wax content and fewer stomata than other genotypes were shortlisted as tolerant. From among these shortlisted ones, four tolerant genotypes (IISR Pragati, SL 5, Suguna, and Suvarna) with higher yield, along with two susceptible genotypes (IISR Alleppey Supreme and IISR Kedaram), were further evaluated in field conditions. The results indicated that, in terms of yield and physiological parameters, the tolerant genotypes significantly outperformed the susceptible ones, showcasing superior drought tolerance traits. Technological integration in conservation and management dramatically increases the range and quality of data collection in a short time and with high accuracy. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are effective in surveillance, mapping, and monitoring and, combined with conventional remote-sensing techniques, offer enhanced scope and overcome several technological and operational challenges in wildlife research and management. Especially in places like India, where the terrain complexity is high and has a low workforce for routine patrolling, UAV technology offers an alternate support system to manage the natural areas and key species. Pioneer effort was made in India for surveying critically endangered aquatic species using UAV in Ken River, Madhya Pradesh. A fixed wing V-TOL UAV was used for survey approximately 24.5 km of river stretch flowing through Ken Gharial Sanctuary and Panna Tiger Reserve to count population of a critically endangered aquatic species, i.e., crocodiles. Flight time of almost 4.5 h maintaining 100 m altitude with five pre-planned missions the UAV acquired 5193 images covering 1858.564 hectares area. 61 crocodile and 1 gharial was found in the search effort. Body length measurement was calculated for every single individual. Our pioneering efforts received wider attention and facilitated increased use of the technology. Other than population count, we also recorded and processed data for crocodile habitat, landscape terrain, 3D models and NDVI. There is a need for concerted efforts to upscale the use of this technology with enhanced capacity of the researchers and managers to leverage its optimal capacity while supporting ground-based conservation with improved vigor and success. Understanding the ionic composition and physicochemical properties of salt-affected soils (SAS) is vital for their rehabilitation. The sodium adsorption ratio (ESR), exchangeable sodium ratio (SAR), exchangeable sodium percent (ESP), ESR–SAR relationship, and Gapon's selectivity coefficient (KG) were determined for inland and coastal soils. The inland SAS had greater alkalinity and lower soluble salts than coastal agroecosystems. The coastal SAS had greater clay, organic C content, exchangeable Ca2+ to Mg2+ ratio, and low ESR and ESP compared with the inland. The Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, SO42–, and Cl– concentrations were greater in soil water saturation paste extract of coastal SAS. The inland SAS were deficient in KMnO4-N, while available P and NH4OAc extractable K were in the sufficient range for crop nutrition. The ESP, pHs, alkalinity, clay, and KG explained ~ 66.2 and 59.4% variability in the available nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, and magnesium content in the inland and coastal SAS, respectively. The organic C, Na+, and SO42 significantly affected the KMnO4-N and available P for inland and organic C, alkalinity, and clay, KG and ESP significantly affected the N and P for coastal SAS. We report the first ever photographic evidence of mangeinfested Golden Jackal Canis aureus from Panna Tiger Reserve, central India. The infected animals were photo-captured during the ongoing camera trap sampling in 2019 as a part of a long-term study on the ecology of reintroduced tigers and co-predators. This new record triggers wildlife health and monitoring issues and, subsequently, the importance of restricting the disease outbreak and treatment measures among other associated species within the protected area. Background: In India, around 77 million people are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Yoga interventions can be effective in preventing T2DM. We conducted a feasibility randomized controlled trial (RCT) in India, and the intervention was the Yoga Programme for T2DM Prevention (YOGA-DP). This study aimed to identify and explore the facilitators and challenges in conducting the feasibility trial in India, and more specifically, to explore the perceptions and experiences of trial staff in relation to running the feasibility trial and Yoga instructors in relation to delivering the intervention. Methods: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted at two trial sites in India (Yoga centers in New Delhi and Bengaluru). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten participants (six trial staff and four Yoga instructors) to explore their perceptions and experiences related to the study's aim. Data were analyzed using deductive as well as inductive logic and an interpretative phenomenological approach. Results: Feasibility-trial-related facilitators were useful participant recruitment strategies and help and support received from the trial coordination center. Intervention-related facilitators were strengths of the intervention content, structure, and delivery (including materials) and competencies of Yoga instructors. Feasibility-trial-related challenges were lack of awareness about T2DM among potential participants, stigma and fear associated with T2DM among potential participants, difficulties in explaining the research and obtaining written informed consent from potential participants, expectations and demands of potential participants and control-group participants, gender and language issues in participant recruitment, other participant recruitment-related challenges, issues in participant follow-up, and issues in data collection and trial documentation. Intervention-related challenges were the limited interest of participants in Yoga, participants' time constraints on practicing Yoga, participants' health issues hindered Yoga practice, beginners' difficulties with practicing Yoga, participants' demotivation to practice Yoga at home, issues with the Yoga practice venue, confusion regarding the intervention structure, issues with intervention materials, and the incompetence of Yoga instructors. Conclusions: The perceptions and experiences of trial staff and Yoga instructors helped us to understand the facilitators and challenges in running a feasibility trial and delivering the intervention for T2DM prevention, respectively. These findings and their suggestions will be used when designing the definitive RCT for evaluating YOGA-DP's effectiveness, and may be helpful to researchers planning similar trials. Paleoclimate investigations of the peat deposits in the Nilgiri Plateau, an important paleoclimate archive of India, are mainly restricted to the carbon isotope composition ((δ13C) of plant-derived materials and pollen studies. However, it is unclear whether these proxies reflect past variability in temperature or hydrology. Here, we report the hydrogen and carbon isotopic variability of n -alkanoic acid of chain length 28 (δDC28 and δ13CC28, respectively) and demonstrate that the peatland leaf wax hydrogen isotopes provide a sensitive record of past hydrology. The decoupling of δ13CC28 and δD of vegetation-corrected rain during the Holocene indicate that δD of the leaf wax compounds mainly respond to past hydrological variability whereas δ13C variations might reflect the temperature-controlled variability of C3 and C4 vegetation. Conforming with the other paleoclimate records from the region, the δDC28 variations showed a reducing precipitation trend since the early Holocene. However, a large amplitude of reconstructed δD of rain (~44‰) during the Holocene indicated changes in the moisture source and trajectory could be an additional factor contributing to the orbital-scale δD variability of proxies from the Indian region. The recovery of wild tigers in India and Nepal is a remarkable conservation achievement, but it sets the stage for increased human–wildlife conflict where parks are limited in size and where tigers reside outside reserves. We deployed an innovative technology, the TrailGuard AI camera-alert system, which runs on-the-edge artificial intelligence algorithms to detect tigers and poachers and transmit real-time images to designated authorities responsible for managing prominent tiger landscapes in India. We successfully captured and transmitted the first images of tigers using cameras with embedded AI and detected poachers. Notifications of tiger images were received in real time, approximately 30 seconds from camera trigger to appearing in a smart phone app. We review use cases of this AI-based real-time alert system for managers and local communities and suggest how the system could help monitor tigers and other endangered species, detect poaching, and provide early warnings for human–wildlife conflict. Purpose: To describe the clinical outcome of a series of seven eyes with an explanation of an original Glaucoma Drainage Device (GDD) arising from the complication of plate exposure and consequent reimplantation of another GDD at a second setting. Methods: This was a retrospective, interventional, and non-comparative study at two tertiary eye care hospitals in eastern and southern India. Electronic medical record data of the seven eyes where a GDD was explanted and a 2nd GDD was reimplanted over October 2010 and May 2021 was analyzed. Statistical analysis was done by SPSS (ver. 26). Results: The first GDD survived for a mean of 168 days only till the plate got exposed and thereby got explanted. Possible predisposing factors noted were conjunctival and scleral thinning, ischemic conjunctiva, etc., The reimplantation surgery was technically easy in the absence of hypotony--opposite to what is reported in the literature. The final IOP (mean +/- SD) values (mm Hg) were 18.9 (+/-7.9), range = 10-30. The mean number of glaucoma medications reduced from 3.9 (+/-1.2; range, 2 to 5) after the explanation to 3.1 (+/-0.7; range, 2 to 4) after the 2nd GDD implantation, in the final follow-up. The second GDD was found to be stable till the last follow-up (mean = 1149 days). No other significant intraoperative or postoperative complications were seen. Conclusions: Reimplantation of a second GDD in a separate setting after explanations of an original implant due to exposure-related complication is both a safe and effective method. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is being identified in an ever-increasing number of countries, including many that are low or middle income (LMIC). Research conducted in these countries requires awareness of unique ethical issues. Drawing on the experience of two organizations that have been involved in conducting and collaborating in ASD research in India, we describe specific considerations in conducting epidemiological, genetic and treatment studies as well as general principles from the field of multinational clinical research as they apply to the conduct of ASD research. We argue that greater attention to ethical concerns will result in quality studies conducted in LMICs that are also of greatest relevance for families and children with ASD.

In 2007, Activity Based Learning (ABL), a child-centered, activity-based method of pedagogical practice, transformed classrooms in all of the over 37,000 primary-level government schools in Tamil Nadu, India. The large scale, rapid pace, and radical nature of educational change sets the ABL initiative apart from most school reform efforts. Interested in understanding how this movement achieved such success, we conducted oral history and ethnographic interviews, as well as an extensive review of reform documentation, to develop a historical case study of the ABL initiative. In this article, we present one of the findings of this study, arguing that the pursuit of ABL in Tamil Nadu was characterized by varied types of bureaucratic activism. State-level administrators, whom we consider bureaucratic activists, engaged strategies for change that combined both movement-building tactics and the conventional tools of administrative power. These reformers became pedagogical experts, expended considerable time and effort promoting the method, and engaged in a participatory, grassroots approach to pursuing the ABL reform within the state education sector. The egalitarian spirit with which ABL was promoted appeared to contribute to a moral authority and good will that generated support even when administrators used traditional tools of bureaucratic power, including top-down mandates, to institutionalize the reform. Ultimately, we argue, in their bureaucratic activism to change the government schools these administrators contributed to visible shifts in the nature of bureaucratic practice itself.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) not only has a physical and emotional toll but also has a substantial economic impact. This study aims to estimate the burden of catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) on households due to RA in Tamil Nadu, India. We conducted cross-sectional descriptive hospital-based single-centre study at a tertiary care private multispecialty hospital in Tamil Nadu, India. The study comprised 320 RA patients who visited the outpatient clinic from April to October 2022. Demographic and baseline descriptive characteristics were reported. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify major determinants associated with CHE. We also examined the inequality in household annual income and CHE. Most study participants were females (88.1%) with a mean age (SD) of 55.57 ± 12.29 years. About 93% of RA patients were from urban areas, and 89.4% were literate. Only 8.1% of respondents reported having health insurance. Households experiencing CHE owing to RA were 51.4% (n = 162). The mean (95% CI) annual health expenditure for treating RA is ₹44,700 (₹41,710 to 47,690) with a median (IQR) of ₹39,210 (₹25,500) [$476 ($310)]. The corresponding mean (95% CI) and median (IQR) Out of pocket expenditure among RA patients per household were ₹40,698 (₹38,249 to 43,148) [$494 ($464 to $524)] and ₹36,450 (23,070) [$442 ($280)] respectively. Nearly half of the households with RA patients had a financial catastrophe due to healthcare costs being paid out-of-pocket and limited health insurance coverage. Aim: Though Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) has demonstrated benefits for low birth weight newborns, coverage continues to be low in India. As part of a World Health Organization (WHO) multi‐country study, we explored intervention models to accelerate KMC coverage in a high priority district of Karnataka, India. Methods: We used implementation‐research methods, formative assessments and quality improvement approaches to design and scale‐up interventions. Evaluation was done using prospective cohort study design; data were collected from facility records, and client interviews during KMC initiation, at discharge and at home after discharge. Results: KMC was initiated at health facilities for 87.6% of LBW babies under 2000 g. At discharge, 85.0% received KMC; 67.9% continued to receive KMC at home on the 7th day post‐discharge. The interventions included training, mentoring and constant advocacy at many levels: public health facilities, private sector and the community. Innovations like a KMC case sheet, counselling, peer support group triggered KMC in the facilities; a KMC‐link card, a microplanning and communication tool for CHWs helped to sustain practice at homes. Conclusion: The study provides a novel approach to designing and scaling up interventions and suggests lessons that are applicable to KMC as well as to broader reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health programmes. It is one of the key research areas around the world by the library and information science profession, and in cognate areas such as art and archeology. Focus groups, digital humanities centres are created for intensive researches which are located mainly in libraries as their core programmes. The library techniques and methods such as knowledge organisation, knowledge management, search and retrieval design, education, and emerging areas such as metadata, semantic mapping, ontology, thesaurus construction, digital curation, discovery services, find application in digital humanities. A new area of study, historical informatics complements the digital humanities. India has vast potential application of digital humanities with its diverse culture, customs and languages and so on. India is reckoned as one of the advanced countries in the IT sector, hence recognising the socio-cultural legacy and diverse historical background, it is viewed that digital humanities has many opportunities and applications for LIS professionals in India to contribute substantially. Rice is sensitive to salinity stress at both the seedling and reproductive stages. The present study used 145 rice genotypes comprising of 100 landraces and 45 advanced breeding lines collected from different regions of India. These genotypes were evaluated in hydroponics under control [electrical conductivity (EC e) ∼1.2 dS/m] and saline (EC e ∼10.0 dS/m) environments along with susceptible (IR29) and tolerant (FL478) checks. The stress susceptibility index for eight morphophysiological traits was estimated. Analysis of variance showed significant differences among the genotypes for all the parameters studied in control, stress and relative stress conditions. We identified 3 landraces (Kuttimanja, Tulasimog and IET-13713I) as tolerant and 14 lines as moderately tolerant to salt stress. Strong correlations in the morphological (root and shoot lengths) and physiological traits (shoot Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ contents, and Na+/K+ ratio) were observed under all the conditions. The hierarchical cluster analysis grouped the genotypes into five clusters, among which cluster II comprised salt-tolerant lines. Haplotyping of Saltol region using 11 simple sequence repeat markers on 17 saline tolerant and moderately tolerant lines was conducted. Markers AP3206F, RM10793 and RM3412b, located close to SKC1 gene (11.23‒12.55 Mb), displayed diverse allelic variations and they were not related to the FL478 type. In this region, tolerant lines like Kuttimanja, IET-13713I and Tulasimog have new alleles. As a result, these lines may be suitable candidates for novel genomic regions governing rice salinity tolerance. Salt-tolerance ability of Kuttimanja, Tulasimog and IET-13713I was validated in two years in three salinity stress environments. These promising lines can be used in breeding programs to broaden the genetic base of salinity tolerance in rice, and it may help to dissect key genomic regions responsible for salinity tolerance. Introduction: Many Indians are at high risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The blood glucose level can be improved through a healthy lifestyle (such as physical activity and a healthy diet). Yoga can help in T2DM prevention, being a culturally appropriate approach to improving lifestyle. We developed the Yoga Programme for T2DM Prevention (YOGA-DP), a 24-week structured lifestyle education and exercise (Yoga) program that included 27 group Yoga sessions and self-practice of Yoga at home. In this study, the feasibility of undertaking a definitive randomized controlled trial (RCT) was explored that will evaluate the intervention's effectiveness among high-risk individuals in India. Methods: A multicenter, two-arm, parallel-group, feasibility RCT was conducted in India. The outcome assessors and data analysts were blinded. Adults with a fasting blood glucose level of 100–125 mg/dL (i.e., at high risk of T2DM) were eligible. Participants were randomized centrally using a computer-generated randomization schedule. In the intervention group, participants received YOGA-DP. In the control group, participants received enhanced standard care. Results: In this feasibility trial, the recruitment of participants took 4 months (from May to September 2019). We screened 711 people and assessed 160 for eligibility. Sixty-five participants (33 in the intervention group and 32 in the control group) were randomized, and 57 (88%) participants were followed up for 6 months (32 in the intervention group and 25 in the control group). In the intervention group, the group Yoga sessions were continuously attended by 32 (97%) participants (median (interquartile range, IQR) number of sessions attended = 27 (3)). In the intervention group, Yoga was self-practiced at home by 30 (91%) participants (median (IQR) number of days per week and minutes per day self-practiced = 2 (2) and 35 (15), respectively). In the control group, one (3%) participant attended external Yoga sessions (on Pranayama) for 1 week during the feasibility trial period. There was no serious adverse event. Conclusions: The participant recruitment and follow-up and adherence to the intervention were promising in this feasibility study. In the control group, the potential contamination was low. Therefore, it should be feasible to undertake a definitive RCT in the future that will evaluate YOGA-DP's effectiveness among high-risk people in India. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to report on a study of the institutional repositories (IRs) in use in Indian universities and research institutes. Design/methodology/approach: Repositories in various institutions in India were accessed and described in a standardised way. Findings: The 20 repositories studied covered collections of diverse types. Most of these collections have unique content. Originality/value: The goal of this study is to study the IR software and data based on the content type, metadata and characteristics. To provide the prevalence of vision impairment and blindness among 250,000 school children aged 6 to 17 years, screened in Tamil Nadu, India. The study was conducted between 2016 and 2019 as a part of the school eye screening program in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu. The clinical examination included basic vision testing, objective refraction, subjective acceptance, spectacle dispensing, and a posterior segment evaluation. The prevalence of vision impairment, blindness, low vision, and the association with other demographic variables using logistic regression were calculated. A total of 250,052 children were screened in 1047 schools and the prevalence of vision impairment, blindness, and low vision in Kanchipuram district was 3.83%, 0.01%, 0.19%, respectively. The major causes for vision impairment, blindness, and low vision were refractive errors (3.05%), high myopia (0.002%), and refractive amblyopia (0.04%), respectively. Vision impairment was significantly associated with urban location (OR = 1.42, 95% CI 1.36–1.48, p <.0001), females (OR = 1.11, 95%CI – 1.08–1.15, p <.0001), private schools (OR = 2.43, 95%CI – 2.35–2.42, p <.0001), higher secondary class grade (OR = 1.69, 95%CI – 1.61–1.77, p =.001), high-school class grade (OR = 1.65, 95%CI – 1.58–1.72, p =.001) and middle school class grade (OR = 1.53, 95%CI – 1.47–1.59, p =.001). This large-scale school eye screening reports a comparatively lower prevalence of vision impairment, blindness, and low vision when compared to other studies conducted around the world. The purpose of this study is to report the distribution of astigmatism among school children in South India. The study was conducted as part of a national school eye screening project named 'Refractive Error Among Children' (REACH) between 6 and 17 years of age. Children underwent presenting visual acuity screening, external eye examination, screening for color vision deficiency, and non-strabismic binocular vision anomalies. Those who failed screening underwent, objective and subjective refraction, and identification of other ocular conditions. Astigmatism was defined as cylindrical power greater than 0.50D. Refractive errors were classified into myopia (≤0.50D), hyperopia (≥0.75D), and other refractive errors (between −0.50D and +0.75D). The data on astigmatism were analyzed and were deduced into its vector components (M, J0 and J45). Descriptive statistics and regression analysis were performed. Data of 245,565 children from 1047 schools were taken for analysis. The average age was 11.63 ± 3.32 (range:6–17) years. After screening, refractive errors and astigmatism was found to be 6.57% (n = 16157) and 3.69% (n = 9064), respectively. Astigmatism among children aged 6 to 10 years was 1.37%. The mean cylindrical power, J0, and J45 was found to be 1.93 ± 1.06D, 0.06 ± 0.59D, and 0.43 ± 0.81D, respectively. Linear regression showed a decreasing trend in the cylindrical component (p <.001) and shift towards less positive J0 values (p <.001). Higher proportions of astigmatism more than 1.50 D (1.83%,n = 4578) and unilateral astigmatism (1.20%,n = 2952) are evident among refractive errors. More than 50% of children who failed vision screening with refractive errors presented with astigmatism. Prevalence was higher among primary school children. School eye screening is a crucial strategy in the elimination of childhood blindness because of its ability to reach out to children who are otherwise inaccessible to eye care needs. Comprehensive screening programs are recommended and are beneficial, but the economic aspects of such models remain to be understood. This study aimed to analyse the cost of a comprehensive school eye screening model while utilizing optometrists and optometry students. This cross-sectional study was conducted for 295 schools screened in the academic year 2018–2019. The analysis was performed from the service provider's perspective including only the direct costs. Financial records were used for cost estimates. The outcome measures were cost per school and child, predictors for the cost, DALYs averted, cost of childhood blindness, and Benefit–Cost Ratio. A total of 65 094 children underwent screening from 295 schools. The median (IQR) cost per school and child for screening was $29.65 (29.65–44.34) and $0.66 (0.32–1.13). The regression model predicted that the cost of screening was dependent on school strength, number of screening personnel, distance of the schools, and deliverables. With the interventions to improve compliance, 14686.30 DALYs have been averted. Loss of productivity due to childhood blindness was estimated to be $339070.83. Screening for colour vision also had a Benefit–Cost ratio of greater than one. Analysis of soil samples collected from 16 rice paddy fields located in the Western Ghats region was performed to quantify the concentration of Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cr, Cd, and Pb using atomic absorption spectroscopy. High concentrations of these heavy metals were found in rice paddy fields regularly cultivated using agrochemicals. We compared this concentration with soils of rice paddy field that was not under cultivation. Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Cd showed increases of 1.2, 1.3, 2.3, 2.2, 1.8, 2.8, 1.8, and 8.5 times, respectively, in the rice paddy fields cultivated with synthetic fertilizers such as NPK, urea, potash, diammonium phosphate, etc., and several categories of pesticides belonging to the class organophosphates, carbamates, and acetanilide herbicide. In contaminated sites, the heavy metals exhibited maximum correlation with soil moisture content (SMC) (Zn, Fe, Cr, Ni, and Cd), soil organic content (SOC) (Fe, Cr, Ni, and Cd), and water holding capacity (WHC) (Cu, Pb, and Cd) than those observed for the reference site. The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed a total of 77.944% variance of heavy metals contributed from WHC (40.259%), SMC (20.854%), and SOC (16.832%). Context: Conservation approaches focussed within protected areas (PAs) have proved successful for tiger (Panthera tigris) conservation in India, but India's growing tiger population requires a landscape-level approach to ensure protection of both source populations and dispersing individuals. Thus, spatially explicit mapping of corridors to support existing metapopulations and provide opportunities for recolonization (i.e., stepping stones, satellite cores) are essential to guide conservation and management planning. Objective: We aimed to model functional connectivity for dispersal and natural colonization of tigers in Central India, and validate our predictions using movement data of translocated tigers in the region. Methods: We first mapped 28 forest patches in the Greater Panna Landscape (GPL) in Central India. Using a resistance surface, we modelled connectivity with least cost path analysis and circuit theory. Centrality scores and pinch-points were calculated, enabling identification of stepping stones and satellite cores. We validated the predicted corridors through spatial path randomization of independent tiger telemetry data. Results: We identified 67 corridor links, 10 stepping stones and 11 satellite cores. Validation confirmed high prediction accuracy, with empirical dispersal paths having mean connectivity values higher than 70% to 98% of the randomised paths. Conclusion: Functional connectivity assessment in heterogeneous landscapes can benefit from deploying multiple connectivity methods and empirical validation. Our analysis identified corridors, stepping stones and satellite cores that were consistent between multiple connectivity modelling methods and strongly reflected actual observed patterns of tiger dispersal in this landscape. Resource dynamism in seasonal forests leads ungulates to differential habitat preference; hence, their distribution aligns with environmental covariates across spatial and temporal scales. Seasonal patterns of four species of ungulates, namely sambar, chital, nilgai, and wild pig, were investigated and identified as the environmental variables driving the density gradient across two seasons, summer and winter, in the tropical dry deciduous forest of Panna Tiger Reserve, central India. Distance sampling data were analyzed using density surface modeling for ungulates with a survey effort of 518 km in winter and 356 km in summer in a generalized additive modeling framework. We found that season significantly affected the spatial densities of all ungulates, with sambar, chital, and nilgai congregating in summer and wild pig in winter. All ungulates showed a clear seasonal shift to the valley in summer and preferred plateaus in winter. The spatially explicit map outputs draw attention to the seasonal hot spots for ungulates abundance and the species and season‐specific roles of environment variables in defining their distribution. Background: Inflammation has traditionally been considered to be one of the hallmarks of cancer, and systemic inflammatory responses have a prognostic value in many solid cancers. The use of inflammation-based prognostic markers along with traditional clinicopathological prognostic markers in oral cavity cancers has not been studied well. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study from a prospectively maintained database of patients with oral cancers who were managed in a regional cancer center in south India. The study included patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity who were treated with curative intent from January to December 2016. Results and Discussion: Three hundred sixty-one patients met the eligibility criteria and were included in the study. The median age of our patient cohort was 45 years; the male-to-female ratio was 3.7:1. All of the patients underwent curative treatments after a multi-disciplinary board concurrence. Advanced T stage, patients with buccal mucosal cancers and patients who received upfront non-surgical treatments have poorer survival outcomes. The clinicopathological variables that predicted a poorer overall survival in the cohort of patients treated with upfront surgery were advanced T Stage, higher grade, presence of perineural invasion, a higher inflammatory maker, and combination of platelet and neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (COP-NLR). Conclusion: Our unique study of oral cavity cancer patients with a primary aim of exploring the prognostic significance of the pre-treatment inflammatory markers gave very interesting results. The prognostic significance of COP-NLR and other inflammatory markers in oral cancers need to be further explored. More importantly, our study has clearly reiterated that meaningful long-term survival outcomes in oral cavity cancers can only be achieved with the incorporation of upfront surgery. Background: Over time, surgical management for conditions involving the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) has evolved. Some techniques, such as keyhole tenodesis proposes bicortical drilling, however, carries an axillary nerve injury risk. The goal of our cadaveric study was to see if we could keep a safe zone between the point of exit of keyhole tenodesis of biceps and axillary nerve. Methodology: The study was performed on ten shoulders from five fresh frozen cadavers. Between the lower border of the transverse humeral ligament (THL) and the superior margin of the pectoralis major insertion at the lowest limit of the bicipital groove, a beath pin was driven through with the help of the modified tip aimer tibial jig procured from the anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL) set, which was fixed at an arc of 45°. The distance between the axillary nerve and beath pin at the exit point was measured. Results: The biceps tendon musculotendinous junction was followed all the way to the inferiorly and biceps tendon was found in the groove. The average distance from the axillary nerve to the exit point of the beath pin was 17.7 mm (range 14.4–20.9 mm, 95% CI). Conclusion: The axillary nerve is not injured during bicortical drilling when keyhole tenodesis of biceps is performed at the distal limit of the groove of biceps. The area in the biciptal groove between inferior margin of THL and superior border of pectoralis major insertion is safe area for biceps tenodesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In India, cancers along with cardiovascular diseases contribute to significant mortality and morbidity. With less than 10 years remaining towards achieving Sustainable development Goals (SDGs), public health systems in India need to be critically assessed and strengthened, for addressing non‐communicable diseases (NCDs) in general and cancers in particular. Our Commentary address the public health response to cancer prevention and control, with specific pointers based on emerging evidence. The relevant issues are stratified as: emphasis on the critical appraisal of national programs, strengthening primary health care (PHC) systems, enhancing focus on client and community centricity, exploring integrative approaches to cancer management and stepping up implementation and multidisciplinary research. Ongoing surveillance is essential to assess the current and future trends of cancer as well as the outcomes of prevention and treatment measures. For revitalizing comprehensive PHC, much depends on our epidemiological capacity and surveillance systems which impart information for local planning. It is imperative to address the cultural barriers and societal norms, which limit the acceptability and participation in screening programs. SDG 3 has ushered the wellbeing agenda at an opportune time. There is a compelling need to conduct research on an integrated approach (ayurveda complimenting allopathic medication) for the treatment of cancer. Objective: Fear of Cancer Recurrence (FCR) is a universal phenomenon widely reported as an unmet need among cancer survivors. The present study aims to determine the patterns of FCR and its associated factors among breast cancer survivors in South India. Methods: A longitudinal study was carried out with pre and post‐assessment. Results: Two hundred and forty eight breast cancer survivors (BCSv) were included in the study. The main finding for the pre versus post‐study was the pattern of mean scores. It is observed that in all factors, the pre‐mean scores were steadily higher than the post‐mean scores the predictors for FCR scores were decrease of age (p = 0.016), BCSv living in joint family (p = 0.008) and who were self‐funded (p = 0.031). Conclusions: FCR was a relatively common symptom reported by BCSv. The predictors for FCR were younger age, BCSv living in a joint family and who were self‐funding for their treatment. In the pre and post‐assessment, it could be concluded that BCSv has reported that the overall FCR and on other variables higher FCR mean scores were reported during the preassessment period. Background: Efficacy and safety are fundamental for the development of successful COVID-19 vaccines. Vaccine-associated side effects influence vaccine hesitancy. This study investigated the prevalence, severity, and onset of side effects following the first dose of COVID-19 vaccines among physicians and dentists working in various healthcare settings across India. Methods: A cross-sectional survey collected self-report data from April to June 2021 on side effects following the first dose of the vaccine. An online validated questionnaire using the Google Docs® platform was circulated via email and social media platforms. Results: More than 40% of participants experienced at least one side effect after the first dose of vaccination; the most common were mild and resolved within three days after vaccination. More than 91% of respondents received the Covishield (AstraZeneca) vaccine; the most prevalent adverse effects were soreness of the injected arm (78.9%), tiredness (71.1%), and fever (54.9%). Logistic regression showed that women were almost 60% less likely to report side effects. Conclusion: Findings supported the safety of the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine based on relatively few self-limiting side effects, mainly soreness of the injected arm and tiredness. Further research is needed to determine the long-term safety of COVID-19 vaccines, especially after booster doses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose/Aim: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are significantly under-reported worldwide. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of educational interventions (EIs) on knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of hospital resident doctors and faculty members and compare ADR reporting in EI (medical specialties) vs. non-EI (surgical specialties) in these two cadres of doctors. Materials and Methods: This study was a prospective comparative study conducted in two groups (EI and non-EI) in resident doctors and faculty members working at a tertiary care hospital. EI group (medical specialties) were provided with EI to increase awareness about ADR reporting, whereas in non-EI group (surgical specialties), no EI was provided and they served as control. Respondents were asked to fill a pretest questionnaire followed by interactive EI in EI group and posttest questionnaire in both groups. The impact of EI among respondents was evaluated by their response to questionnaire and number of ADRs reported after intervention. Results: Total (n = 202) respondents were enrolled in the study. The number of resident doctors and faculty members in each group were (n = 101 [50%]). Overall, (n = 100 [49.5%]) were from the medical and (n = 102 [50.5%]) from surgical specialty. Post-EI period, there was statistically significant improvement in KAP domains. Conclusion: Our study serves as credible evidence that through EI; statistically significant improvement in KAP of resident doctors and faculty members in both medical and surgical specialties toward ADR reporting and existing pharmacovigilance system can be achieved.
