Background: Staphylococcal mastitis is a major cause of concern to the dairy industry in India and several countries worldwide. Though Staphylococcus aureus is the major cause, coagulase negative staphylococcal species (CoNS) are being increasingly reported in recent years. Aims: To investigate the incidence of coagulase negative staphylococcal species in bovine mastitis. Methods: Isolation of staphylococci was carried out from 237 milk samples of cows and She buffaloes with clinical and subclinical mastitis from different regions of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. CoNS isolates were identified by tube coagulase test using fresh rabbit plasma and coagulase gene PCR. We employed the biochemical test scheme published elsewhere previously for identification of the CoNS isolates up to species and subspecies levels. Seven representative isolates were identified by 16S rDNA sequencing to check the accuracy of biochemical test based identification. Results: The CoNS constitute the majority of the staphylococcal isolates from mastitis (80/125, 64%) in this region. Using biochemical test scheme, the CoNS isolates from bovine mastitis were identified as S. cohnii sub sp. cohnii, S. simulans, S. capitis sub sp. capitis, S. cohnii sub sp. xylosus, and S. lugdunensis. The CoNS species S. schleiferi, S. haemolyticus, S. sciuri, S. xylosus, S. chromogenes, and Macrococcus epidermidis were identified by 16S rDNA sequencing. Conclusion: The 16S rDNA sequencing is the appropriate method for the identification of CoNS species. The present study was carried out to characterize beta-lactam resistance in Escherichia coli isolated from healthy and diarrhoeic dogs. A total of 93 E. coli were isolated from the rectal swabs of 136 dogs (60/92 of healthy dogs and 33/44 of diarrhoeic dogs). Predominant serotypes detected include rough (19 isolates), O141 (5), O9 (2), O126 (2), O128 (2), O15, O20, O35, O49, O63, O85, O101, O116, O117, O118, O119 (1 isolate each) and the rest of 52 isolates were untypable (UT). Disc diffusion method revealed resistance to cefotaxime (41.9%), ceftriaxone (34.4%), ceftazidime (30.1%) and aztreonam (18.2%). Overall frequency of extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) phenotype was found to be 29% (27/93). Beta-lactamase genes detected include blaAmpC (86.0%), blaSHV (30.1%), blaCTX-M group-1 (19.3%), blaTEM (17.2%), blaOXA (13.9%) and blaCTX-M group-2 (7.5%). Background: Stethorini are specialized mite predators in the family Coccinellidae, which are small with black body and brown or yellow colored appendages. This study aimed to survey species of Stethorini associated with phytophagous mites of South India and their prey range. Results: Eight species of Stethorini, viz., Parastethorus sp. Stethorus (Allostethorus) forficatus, S. (A.) pauperculus, S. (A.) tetranychi, S. (A.) sp., S. keralicus, S. (S.) rani and S. (S.) sp., each associated with distinct species of mite were identified in this study and part of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences of seven of these species are provided. Barcode gap analysis and distance summary analysis in the BOLD system as well as phylogenetic analysis of these seven species were given. Conclusions: This study revealed the species of Stethorini in South India along with their prey range and associated plants. As all the species look similar with black body and yellow appendages, DNA barcodes generated can be used as an effective bio-identification tool for this group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The monotypic genus Dravidogecko, represented by its type-species D. anamallensis, is singular amongst peninsular Indian gekkonid lineages in its endemism to the Western Ghats. Molecular species delimitation approaches reveal at least seven species-level lineages within the genus from its distribution range across the mid-high elevations of the southern Western Ghats of India. These lineages, albeit superficially cryptic, are patently diagnosable from each other by employing a limited but precise set of morphological characters. Six of these lineages that were obscured under the nomen D. anamallensis are herein recognized as distinct species. A reappraisal of the genus Dravidogecko is provided based on external morphology and osteological characters, along with a detailed redescription of the holotype of D. anamallensis. A key to the species based on diagnostic characters is presented. Gene-trees based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA data recovered marginally disparate topologies and were consequently coalesced into a species-tree for phylogenetic inference. Timetree analysis reveals late Miocene cladogenesis in this group and establishes late Palaeocene divergence from its sister genus, Hemidactylus, making Dravidogecko one of the earliest, extant lizard lineages to have colonized peninsular India.

Larvae of most lepidopteran insect species are known to be voracious feeders and important agricultural pests throughout the world. Achaea janata larvae cause serious damage to Ricinus communis (Castor) in India resulting in significant economic losses. Microbial insecticides based on crystalline (Cry) toxins of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have been effective against the pest. Excessive and indiscriminate use of Bt-based biopesticides could be counter-productive and allow susceptible larvae to eventually develop resistance. Further, lack of adequate genome and transcriptome information for the pest limit our ability to determine the molecular mechanisms of altered physiological responses in Bt-exposed susceptible and tolerant insect strains. In order to facilitate biological, biochemical and molecular research of the pest species that would enable more efficient biocontrol, we report the midgut de novo transcriptome assembly and clustering of susceptible Cry toxin-exposed and Cry toxin tolerant Achaea janata larvae with appropriate age-matched and starvation controls.

A new rupicolous gecko from the Hemidactylus brookii complex is described from the forests and plateaus of Amboli, in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra. This medium sized (average adult SVL 56.2±5.0 to at least 62 mm), nocturnal species is superficially similar to other congeners from the 'H. brookii' clade, but can be distinguished from them in having 17 or 18 fairly regular longitudinal rows of enlarged, conical, keeled tubercles at midbody, extending from posterior part of the head to groin; tubercles in parasagittal rows smaller, feebly keeled and more rounded; approximately six rows of tubercles on either side of parasagittal tubercle rows, highly enlarged, remarkably conical and strongly keeled; lamellae divided in a straight transverse series-seven or eight lamellae beneath fourth digit (manus and pes) and five or six beneath first digit (manus and pes). Males with nine or ten (rarely eight) femoral pores separated by four or five poreless scales; supralabials 11-13; infralabials 8-11. Molecular data based on the mitochondrial ND2 gene supports the distinctiveness of this species and helps ascertain its phylogenetic position within the 'H. brookii' group of the Indian Hemidactylus radiation.

The montane agamid lizard genus Oriocalotes is currently considered monotypic, represented by the species, O. paulus. The systematic status of this taxon has remained questionable since its initial descriptions in the mid-1800s. A detailed molecular and morphological study was carried out to assess the validity of this genus, and its systematic position within the Asian agamid subfamily, Draconinae. Freshly collected and historical museum specimens from the type locality of O. paulus were examined morphologically, along with additional samples collected from localities in Mizoram state, Northeast India. Utilising newly generated molecular sequences (two mitochondrial and three nuclear genes), combined with those previously published for representative genera from the subfamilies Draconinae and Agaminae, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic trees were constructed. Phylogenetic results suggest that Oriocalotes is part of the widespread South and Southeast Asian radiation of Calotes. Comparative morphological studies (including external morphology, hemipenis and osteology) between Oriocalotes and related genera further support this systematic placement. Oriocalotes is herein regarded as a junior subjective synonym of Calotes. Calotes paulus comb. nov. is also assigned a lectotype and given a detailed redescription based on the lectotype, paralectotypes and additional topotypic material. Furthermore, the specimens collected from Mizoram populations are found to be morphologically and genetically distinct from Calotes paulus comb. nov., and are described herein as a new species, Calotes zolaiking sp. nov.

We use mitochondrial sequence data to identify divergent lineages within the gekkonid genus Cyrtodactylus in northeast India and use morphological data to describe six new species from within the Indo-Burma clade of Cyrtodactylus. The new species share an irregular colour pattern but differ from described species from the region in morphology and mitochondrial sequence data (>11 % uncorrected pairwise sequence divergence). Three new species are from along the Brahmaputra River and three are from mountains south of the Brahmaputra, including the largest Cyrtodactylus from India and the fifth gecko to be described from a major Indian city, Guwahati.

Two new cryptic species of the agamid genus Sitana Cuvier, 1829 from Peninsular India are described herein. Sitana gokakensis sp. nov. from Gokak, Karnataka closely resembles Sitana thondalu sp. nov. from Nagarjuna Sagar, Andhra Pradesh. The two species can be distinguished based on their subtle morphological differences, genetic difference and geographic distribution. Sitana gokakensis sp. nov. have a relatively depressed head compared to Sitana thondalu sp. nov. Additionally, the vertebral scale counts differ in females of the two new species (Sitana gokakensis sp. nov. 45-47 vs Sitana thondalu sp. nov. 49-53). Genetic divergence between them is comparable to those between previously described Sitana species. Furthermore, the two new species are distributed ca. 500 km apart and are endemic to their respective landscapes that lie in similar latitudes of peninsular India. We urge the use of large sample size in new species descriptions especially those dealing with cryptic species like Sitana. The discovery of the two new cryptic species from these rocky terrains in peninsular India highlights need for more herpetological exploration in this region.

Two new species of the genus Cyrtodactylus are described based on collections from Northeast India, and descriptions and diagnoses of previously described species and synonyms from the region are provided. One of the new species from lowland habitats in Tripura is medium sized, with a continuous series of precloacal pores, and is allied to C. ayeyarwadyensis from Myanmar; while the other new species from West Bengal is smaller, with both femoral and precloacal pores, and is related to C. gubernatoris from West Bengal and Sikkim. We designate a lectotype for Cyrtodactylus khasiensis and recognize the C. khasiensis synonym Gymnodactylus himalayicus as a valid species of Cyrtodactylus based on morphological evidence, and suggest the recognition of the last remaining subspecies of C. khasiensis, C. k. cayuensis, as a valid species based on geography and morphology. The stabilization of the taxa Cyrtodactylus khasiensis and C. gubernatoris with a limited subset of characters and specific distributional data, as well as the elevation of Cyrtodactylus himalayicus comb. nov. from synonymy, will allow the descriptions of many more Cyrtodactylus species from the region.
