The article presents a report on the condition of the Taj Mahal, a structure in the city of Agra, India, built in the 17th century as a memorial by the Shah Jahan to his late wife. With nearly five million visitors annually the monument is experiencing slow deterioration due to several factors including age, air pollution, and human impact. Government attempts to restore the monument and prevent further deterioration include use of a special clay to remove yellowing of the marble and a restriction of vehicular traffic near the monument complex.
