Purpose: There are over 300,000 male migrant workers in Singapore. Around 600 major workplace injuries are reported in Singapore each year, mainly in the manufacturing and construction injuries. Migrant workers who are affected by workplace injuries often face many challenges, including not being able to work and thus may be repatriated to their home countries, which affects their financial status and that of their families, whom they support. This research aims to explore the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of injured migrant workers in Singapore, towards disability and vocational rehabilitation. Design/methodology/approach: Fifteen male migrant workers, from Bangladesh, China and India, who had acquired disabling injuries in their workplaces in Singapore, were identified through purposive sampling. They were interviewed by a male interviewer, either in Mandarin Chinese or with the assistance of interpreters for Bengali-English and Tamil-English. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, translated to English, then analysed thematically. Findings: The interviewees generally had a pessimistic outlook on their disability, which often impacted negatively on their self-worth and familial relationships. Many of them also had little knowledge of vocational rehabilitation and had not yet seriously considered future job prospects. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, there are no similar studies exploring the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of injured migrant workers in Singapore towards disability and vocational rehabilitation. Purpose: Whether food insecurity (FI), a social determinant of health, is linked with successful aging (SA) in the older generation remains uncertain. This study explored the association of FI with SA among older Indians. Methods: Data were collected from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) wave 1 (2017–2018). Older adults (≥ 60 years) who completed both the FI and the SA surveys were selected. FI was indicated by the lack of access to enough food in the past year. SA was determined by five components: (1) low probability of diseases; (2) low probability of disability; (3) high cognitive functionality; (4) low probability of depression; and (5) active social engagement. The association of FI and SA was assessed using multivariable logistic regression adjusted for potential covariates. Subgroup analyses were performed to evaluate interactions with age, sex, alcohol use, smoking, and place of residence. Results: 27,579 participants met the eligibility criteria. Overall prevalence was 7.13% for FI and 19.41% for SA. Following full adjustment, FI was inversely associated with SA (OR 0.56; 95% CI 0.49–0.65) and with each of SA's five components. No significant interactions of FI and SA were observed in subgroup analyses stratified by age, sex, alcohol use, smoking, or place of residence. Conclusions: FI was inversely associated with SA among older Indians. These findings need to be validated by future studies which should also explore potential underlying mechanisms, and whether interventions decreasing FI might increase SA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore and expand the concept of a marketing system for developing a more dynamic and nuanced understanding of marketing. The purpose of the proposed framework is to extend this literature by making salient and explicit how context, market system and value creation are theoretically interrelated. To accomplish this objective, the authors use the framework proposed by Layton (2019) as the theoretical foundation to acquire insights into the market. Particularly, they investigate how four distinct marketing systems (i.e. anarchy, structured, emergent and purposeful market systems) operate in a developing economy. In addition, the study explores the market's effects of technological advancement, sociocultural influences, historical background and political institutions, as well as the responses of political entities, firms and consumers. Also, the positive and negative effects of the various marketing systems are analyzed. Finally, the authors investigate the changing marketplace in various industrial sectors (e.g. home appliances, food, apparel/fashion and transportation) to provide marketing researchers and practitioners with insights. In essence, the study focuses on the sectors related to everyday consumption. Design/methodology/approach: This analysis uses a theoretical approach to extend the understanding concept of marketing. To examine the numerous market systems in India, the authors use an approach developed by Layton (2007). This theoretical approach is intended to sensitize scholars to critical processes rather than a hypothetico-deductive analysis with a prediction goal (Turner, 1986). Epistemologically, this analysis can be classified as a form of discovery-oriented theory development (Wells, 1993). Findings: Although all four systems (e.g. autarchic, emergent, purposeful and structured) are ingrained in India, their functionality differs from the Western system and among industries. For example, the apparel sector appears more autarchic, but the food industry is more purposeful. How the home appliance market operates demonstrates the transition from an autarchic to an emergent system. The authors also uncover additional environmental factors that impact the four types of marketing systems and moderator roles of governate agencies and nonprofit organizations. The externality and positive outcomes also emerged throughout the analysis. Research limitations/implications: This study articulates the four types of marketing systems and illustrates the environmental factors/antecedents and outcomes for the exchange and value creation. Most importantly, it adds value to the literature by emphasizing the role of government agencies and unrestricted institutions in the mechanism. It also uncovers cultural elements such as spirituality as a catalyst for exchange and value creation. Practical implications: The analysis provides practitioners with insights into operating the firm in India by articulating the industrial differentiations and the exchange/value creation. Specifically, it provides a blueprint for strategic analysis that can be used prior to market entry to increase the likelihood of market entry success by understanding the nuanced differences that lead to significant operational difficulties if not properly prepared for and managed. Evidence shows that stigma negatively influences the quality of life of persons with severe mental illness. Nonetheless, stigma towards mental illness is lower among persons with a lived experience of mental illness compared to the rest of the population. Understanding the association between stigma of mental illness and the mental status of individuals living in urban India and whether this association is moderated by demographic factors opens a new avenue for prevention of social exclusion. Persons diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or severe unipolar depression (cases, n = 647) were recruited from among hospital patients in New Delhi between November 2011 and June 2012 and matched with non-psychiatric urban dwellers by age, sex, and location of residence (controls, n = 649). Propensity score matching with multivariable linear regression was used to test whether stigma towards mental illness, measured by a 13-item Stigma Questionnaire, differed between cases and controls. Cases reported significantly lower stigma scores than controls (b = -0.50, p < 0.0001). The strength of the association between mental illness and stigma was not affected after controlling for age, caste, sex, education, and employment status, while wealth marginally reduced the strength of the association. These findings suggest individuals with a lived experience of mental illness, in New Delhi, India, may be more tolerant towards mental illness and support the need to involve persons with lived experience in the development and implementation of health promotional campaigns and programs aimed at reducing stigma towards mental illness. Background: Hepatitis E can potentially progress to HEV-related acute liver failure (HEV-ALF). East and South Asia bear a substantial burden of HEV infection, with Bangladesh, China, and India facing the most severe threat in this region. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the burden of HEV-ALF in these three high-risk countries. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed utilizing PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Medline, Embase, and Web of Science databases. Studies in English or Chinese that reported data on the burden of HEV-ALF in Bangladesh, China and India were included. Outcomes were pooled with meta-analysis utilizing R software. Estimates were calculated with random-effects models, and subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were conducted to address heterogeneity. Egger's test and Begg's test were performed to assess publication bias. Results: A total of 20 eligible studies were included in this study. The pooled HEV-attributable proportion of viral-related acute liver failure was estimated to be 40.0% (95% CI: 0.28–0.52), 30.0% (95% CI: 0.18–0.44), and 61.0% (95% CI: 0.49–0.72) among non-pregnant individuals in India, China and Bangladesh, while in Indian pregnant females, it was 71.0% (95% CI: 0.62–0.79). The combined prevalence among non-pregnant HEV-infected participants was 28.0% (95% CI: 0.20–0.37) and 10.0% (95% CI: 0.01–0.28) in India and China, and it was 34.0% (95% CI: 0.27–0.42) in Indian pregnant females with HEV infection. The overall mortality of HEV-ALF was estimated to be 32.0% (95% CI: 0.23–0.42) and 64.0% (95% CI: 0.50–0.77) among the non-pregnant and the pregnant participants in India, and it was 23.0% (95% CI: 0.14–0.34) in Chinese non-pregnant participants. Conclusions: The burden of HEV-ALF in Bangladesh, China, and India is non-negligible despite geographic and population heterogeneity. The prevention of HEV infection and early recognition of HEV-ALF are of great significance, especially in high-risk countries and populations. Background: Insomnia predisposes the aging population to reduced quality of life and poor mental and physical health. Evidence of the association between polluted fuel use and insomnia symptoms is limited and is non-existent for the Indian population. Our study aimed to explore the link between polluted fuel use and insomnia symptoms in middle-aged and older (≥ 45 years) Indian populations. Methods: We utilized data from nationally representative Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI) Wave 1. Participants with complete information on fuel use, insomnia symptoms, and covariates were included. Insomnia symptoms were indicated by the presence of at least one of three symptoms: difficulty in initiating sleep (DIS), difficulty in maintaining sleep (DMS), or early morning awakening (EMA), ≥ 5 times/week. Survey-weighted multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the association between polluted fuel use and insomnia symptoms. We also assessed the interaction of association in subgroups of age, gender, BMI, drinking, and smoking status. Results: Sixty thousand five hundred fifteen participants met the eligibility criteria. Twenty-eight thousand two hundred thirty-six (weighted percentage 48.04%) used polluted fuel and 5461 (weighted percentage 9.90%) reported insomnia symptoms. After full adjustment, polluted fuel use was associated with insomnia symptoms (OR 1.16; 95%CI 1.08–1.24) and was linked with DIS, DMS, and EMA (OR 1.14; 95%CI 1.05–1.24, OR 1.12; 95%CI 1.03–1.22, and OR 1.15; 95%CI 1.06–1.25, respectively). No significant interactions for polluted fuel use and insomnia symptoms were observed for analyses stratified by age, sex, BMI, drinking, or smoking. Conclusions: Polluted fuel use was positively related to insomnia symptoms among middle-aged and older Indians. As subsystems of the Asian summer monsoon, summer precipitation variations in India and the northern part of eastern China (NEC) are physically connected. This study noted that the connection has been significantly enhanced after 1999 compared to 1979-98, which is due to the strengthened water vapor transportation connection between the two regions. That is associated with interdecadal variations of the combined effects of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) over the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) on the northwest Pacific subtropical high (NWPSH) and the Indo-Pacific Walker cell. Against the background of La Niña, the strengthened NWPSH and Indo-Pacific Walker cell favor water vapor transport to India and the NEC since 1999. Accordingly, summer precipitation in the two regions increases simultaneously, leading to the enhancement of the summer precipitation teleconnection between them. In addition, the influence of TIO SSTAs and the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) on Indo-Pacific circulations decreases, which further enhances the relative importance of ENSO on the summer precipitation in the two regions. However, during 1979-98, La Niña SSTAs has weak effects on the NWPSH and Indo-Pacific Walker cell, the negative TIO SSTAs significantly weaken NWPSH, and the negative IOD also obstructs the westward extension of the Indo-Pacific Walker cell. Circulations and water vapor transportation related to the Indian Ocean and NEC summer precipitation are inconsistent, resulting in a weak precipitation teleconnection between them. Background: Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a common disease worldwide, especially in developing countries. China, Brazil, and India are among the world's fastest-growing emerging economies. This study aimed to assess long-term trends in PUD mortality and explore the effects of age, period, and cohort in China, Brazil, and India. Methods: We collected data from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study and used an age–period–cohort (APC) model to estimate the effects of age, period, and cohort. We also obtained net drift, local drift, longitudinal age curve, and period/cohort rate ratios using the APC model. Results: Between 1990 and 2019, the age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) of PUD and PUD attributable to smoking showed a downward trend in all countries and both sexes. The local drift values for both sexes of all ages were below zero, and there were obvious sex differences in net drifts between China and India. India had a more pronounced upward trend in the age effects than other countries. The period and cohort effects had a similar declining trend in all countries and both sexes. Conclusions: China, Brazil, and India had an inspiring decrease in the ASMRs of PUD and PUD attributable to smoking and to period and cohort effects during 1990–2019. The decreasing rates of Helicobacter pylori infection and the implementation of tobacco-restricting policies may have contributed to this decrease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Insomnia and urinary incontinence (UI) are both diseases burdening older adults. However, the association between them has not been well elucidated. The purpose of this study is to assess the correlation between insomnia symptoms and UI in a large community‐dwelling sample of older Indian adults. Methods: Data were from Wave 1 (2017–2018) of the Longitudinal Ageing Study of India (LASI). Male and female participants aged ≥ 60 years who provided complete information on insomnia symptoms, UI, stress UI (SUI), and covariates were included. Insomnia symptoms were identified by a report of: trouble falling asleep, waking up at night, or waking too early, ≥ 5 times/week. UI was defined by self-reported diagnosis. SUI was identified by self-report of involuntary urine leakage when sneezing, coughing, laughing, or lifting weights. Multivariable logistic regression analyses evaluated the associations between insomnia symptoms and UI and SUI. Stratified linear regression evaluated for interactions in prespecified subgroups. Results: Twenty-six thousand eight hundred twenty-one LASI participants met entry criteria. 2979 (11.11%) reported insomnia symptoms, 976 (3.64%) UI, and 2726 (10.16%) SUI. After full adjustment, insomnia symptoms were associated with both UI and SUI among males (OR 1.53; 95%CI 1.20–1.96 and OR 1.51; 95%CI 1.25–1.83) and females (OR 1.53; 95% CI 1.21–1.92 and OR 1.50; 95% CI 1.31–1.73). A significant interaction effect by age was observed between insomnia symptoms and SUI among both males (p = 0.048) and females (p = 0.042). Conclusions: Insomnia symptoms were associated with UI and with SUI in both male and female older Indian adults. The number of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) cases in Malaysia has increased over the years but many have gone unreported. The current study thus aimed to investigate the awareness and recognition on signs and symptoms of CSA among Malaysian parents of Malay, Chinese and Indian descent. A total of 402 multi-ethnic parents participated in this quantitative, cross-sectional, and interviewer-administered survey. Prior to the study, informed consent was obtained from the respondents. The CSA Myth Scale and the Recognition on Signs and Symptoms of CSA Scale were used to measure the variables of the study. The findings indicated that Malaysian Indian (MI) parents have the highest awareness and knowledge of CSA, while the Malaysian Chinese (MC) parents have the lowest. The Malaysian Malay (MM) parents have average awareness and knowledge of CSA. Moreover, it was found that less than half of the 402 respondents were able to positively identify the signs and symptoms of CSA and that 41.8% of the respondents believed that their children would never be sexually abused. Further probing is henceforth warranted to ascertain the reason(s) for their confidence. Finally, this study has helped close the knowledge gap by providing a peek into the awareness and knowledge of CSA among Malaysian parents of the three major ethnicities in the country. The immense Tibetan Plateau is a masterpiece of the ongoing India–Asia collision. The timing of the collision is a critical parameter to reconstruct the plateau evolution, but has been not well understood yet. Here, we report a newly discovered Eocene (53.8 Ma) shoshonitic intrusion with the input of Indian continental material in the Yangbajing area of the Lhasa Terrane, south Tibet. The reverse 207Pb/206Pb zoning exhibited by feldspars, the linear isotopic arrays between whole‐rock 187Os/188Os and 1/188Os, the in‐situ feldspar 208Pb/204Pb and 206Pb/204Pb values, and the in‐situ zircon εHf(t) values and δ18O values strongly demonstrate a binary interaction process for the generation of the Yangbajing shoshonitic intrusion. Our Os isotopes further illustrate that the interaction process was dominated by recycled crustal melt assimilating minor mantle melt. In addition, different isotopic systems consistently point to an end‐member represented by the underthrust crust slice of Indian continent, which indicates that the Indian lithosphere must have already subducted beneath the Lhasa Terrane at 53.8 Ma. This is also supported by the abrupt isotopic shift toward the enriched values and the composition variation toward the high potassium contents in the subsequent Tibetan magmatism, corresponding to an increasing involvement of the Indian continental crust into the upper plate magmatism. Therefore, the Yangbajing shoshonitic intrusion is one of the earliest known magmatic evidence for the onset of the India–Asia collision. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) secondary to Histoplasma capsulatum infection is a rare disorder with poor outcome. Although cases of patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have been well documented, little study has reported in the setting of HIV seronegative. In this study, we report a case of HLH secondary to histoplasmosis in an immunocompetent patient in China and review all cases on this situation. The objective was to summary their epidemiology, clinical characteristics, diagnostic approaches, and therapeutic response. A 46-year-old male cooker presented fever, fatigue, anorexia, and weight loss. Bone marrow examination suggest fungus organism and hemophagocytosis, and further, bone marrow culture confirmed Histoplasma capsulatum , as the etiology of HLH. The patient was successfully treated. We reviewed a total of the 13 cases (including our patient) of HLH with histoplasmosis in intact immunology patients. Twelve of the 13 patients are from endemic areas, and nine of the 12 cases are from emerging endemic areas, India and China. Three patients had sojourn history may related to the disease onset. Twelve of the 13 cases fulfilled HLH-2004 criteria. The diagnosis of Histoplasma capsulatum infection was established by histological examination (13 of 13), culture (4 of 13), molecular method (2 of 13), and antigen or serological assays (2 of 13). Amphotericin B, posaconazole, and itraconazole show favorable activity against the fungus, seven patients used specific treatment for HLH. For analysis of outcomes, two of the 13 patients died. Our present case report and literature review show that disseminated Histoplasma capsulatum infection with HLH in the immunocompetent population becomes increasingly common in emerging endemic areas and have high mortality. It is necessary for clinicians to improve the awareness of disease diagnosis due to the atypical population and disease presentation. Emerald is among the most valuable gems in the world. Over the past decade, its commercial value and geographic origin have been the focus of gemological and geological research. In this study, emerald samples from India were examined by UV-Vis-NIR, FTIR, Raman spectra analysis, EPMA, and LA-ICP-MS. Hexagonal three- and multi-phase inclusions are first reported in Indian emeralds, containing gas bubbles (CO2 or CO2 + CH4), water or liquid mixtures of H2O + CO2, and solid phases inclusions (rounded crystals of siderite and dolomite, platelets of phlogopite, and magnesite). Mineral inclusions in Indian emeralds typically included phlogopite, quartz, talc, aragonite, and albite. The representative UV-Vis-NIR spectra show a distinct Fe absorption band, and one of the more typical characteristics of Indian emeralds is that the absorption strength of Fe3+ (369 nm) and Fe2+ (851 nm) is greater than that of Cr3+ (426, 606, 635, and 680 nm). Infrared spectra show that the absorption of type II H2O is stronger than that of type I H2O. LA-ICP-MS results show that Indian emeralds contain high alkali metals (10,503–16,964 ppmw; avg. 13,942 ppmw), moderate Fe (2451–4153 ppmw; avg. 3468 ppmw), low V (37–122 ppmw; avg. 90 ppmw), and the content of Cr (106–6310 ppmw) varies in a wide range. From a greenish-white core to a medium-green rim, the content of Fe, V, Cr, Sc, Cs, Rb, and Ga gradually increases in emerald with color band. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water samples from twenty-six locations were collected during March 2014, to evaluate the spatial variation in the water quality of Garra River, Ganges Basin. The physicochemical and heavy metals concentration along the river water were significantly different between the natural and urbanized areas. In the case of the mainstream, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the biological oxygen demand (BOD5), which indicate the levels of organic pollution of the river water, were in the range of 8.1 - 51.4 mg/L and 5.8 - 26.9 mg/L, respectively. On the other hand, in the case of tributaries, these values were in the range of 19 - 36 mg/L and 11.2 - 20 mg/L, respectively. Multivariate statistical analysis was also carried out to discriminate sources of spatial variation of water quality. The results of principal component analysis (PCA) show the relationship between physicochemical parameters suggesting that the quality of water is mostly controlled by carbonate weathering. Dolomite is most likely to be present, which is a common source of Ca+ and Mg+. Spatial distribution of PO4 3- with a high concentration in the downstream area of river (average 0.35 mg/L) suggests runoff from agricultural fields in this region as the main source. Background: Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), an important and long-cultivated spice crop, is native to South India and grown in the tropics. Piperine is the main pungent and bioactive alkaloid in the berries of black pepper, but the molecular mechanism for piperine biosynthesis has not been determined. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), which are classical endogenous noncoding small RNAs, play important roles in regulating secondary metabolism in many species, but less is known regarding black pepper or piperine biosynthesis. Results: To dissect the functions of miRNAs in secondary metabolism especially in piperine biosynthesis, 110 known miRNAs, 18 novel miRNAs and 1007 individual targets were identified from different tissues of black pepper by small RNA sequencing. qRT-PCR and 5′-RLM-RACE experiments were conducted to validate the reliability of the sequencing data and predicted targets. We found 3 miRNAs along with their targets including miR166-4CL, miR396-PER and miR397-CCR modules that are involved in piperine biosynthesis. Conclusion: MiRNA regulation of secondary metabolism is a common phenomenon in plants. Our study revealed new miRNAs that regulate piperine biosynthesis, which are special alkaloids in the piper genus, and they might be useful for future piperine genetic improvement of black pepper. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants have been emerging and circulating globally since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, of which B.1.617 lineage that was first reported in India at the end of 2020, soon became predominant. Tracing genomic variations and understanding their impact on the viral properties are the foundations for the vaccine and drug development and for the mitigation measures to be taken or lifted. In this study, 1,051 near-complete genomes and 1,559 spike (S) sequences belonging to the B.1.617 were analyzed. A genome-wide spread of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was identified. Of the high frequency mutations identified, 61% (11/18) involved structural proteins, despite two third of the viral genome encoding nonstructural proteins. There were 22 positive selection sites, mostly distributed across the S protein, of which 16 were led by non-C to U transition and should be of a special attention. Haplotype network revealed that a large number of daughter haplotypes were continually derived throughout the pandemic, of which H177, H181 H219 and H286 from the ancestor haplotype H176 of B.1.617.2 were widely prevalent. Besides the well known substitutions of L452R, P681R and deletions of E156 and F157, as well as the potential biological significance, structural analysis in this study still indicated that new amino acid changes in B.1.617, such as E484Q and N501Y, had reshaped the viral bonding network, and increasingly sequenced N501Y mutant with a potential enhanced binding ability was detected in many other countries in the follow-up monitoring. There is increasing evidence indicating that melts derived from subducted oceanic crust and sediments may have played a key role in building continental crust. This mechanism predicts that juvenile arc crust should have oxygen isotope characteristics ranging from mantle-like to supracrustal, but consistent mantle-like radiogenic (Nd-Hf) isotopic signatures. Here we present in-situ zircon U-Pb dating, Hf-O isotope analyses, and whole rock major-trace element and Nd isotope analyses of a granitoid from NW India. In-situ secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) zircon U-Pb dating yields a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 873±6 Ma for the granitoid. It displays mantle-like zircon εHf(εHf(873 Ma)=+9.3 to +10.9) and whole-rock Nd (εNd(873 Ma)=+3.5) values but supracrustal δ18O values, the latter mostly varying between 9‰ and 10‰. The calculated whole-rock δ18O value of 11.3‰±0.6‰ matches well with those of hydrothermally-altered pillow lavas and sheeted dykes from ophiolites. The major and trace element composition of the granitoid is similar to petrological experimental melts derived from a mixture of MORB+sediments. Thus, the granitoid most likely represents the product of partial melting of the uppermost oceanic crust (MORB+sediments). We propose that the decoupling between Hf-Nd and O isotopes as observed in this granitoid can be used as a powerful tool for the identification of slab melting contributing to juvenile continental crustal growth. The India-Asia collision is an outstanding smoking gun in the study of continental collision dynamics. How and when the continental collision occurred remains a long-standing controversy. Here we present two new paleomagnetic data sets from rocks deposited on the distal part of the Indian passive margin, which indicate that the Tethyan Himalaya terrane was situated at a paleolatitude of ∼19.4°S at ∼75 Ma and moved rapidly northward to reach a paleolatitude of ∼13.7°N at ∼61 Ma. This implies that the Tethyan Himalaya terrane rifted from India after ∼75 Ma, generating the North India Sea. We document a new two-stage continental collision, first at ∼61 Ma between the Lhasa and Tethyan Himalaya terranes, and subsequently at ∼53−48 Ma between the Tethyan Himalaya terrane and India, diachronously closing the North India Sea from west to east. Background High salt intake is a major modifiable risk factor of hypertension which is prevalent in India. It is not yet clear if salt substitutes reduce blood pressure (BP) among Indian hypertensive patients. Objectives Examine the acceptability, usage, and BP effects of a reduced-sodium and added-potassium salt substitute among hypertensive patients. Methods We enrolled 502 participants with hypertension (aged 61.6 ± 12.0 y, 58.8% women) from 7 villages in rural India. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either regular salt (100% sodium chloride) or the salt substitute (70% sodium chloride/30% potassium chloride blend), and advised to replace all home salt use. The primary outcome was the change in systolic BP (SBP) from baseline to 3 mo comparing the salt substitute and regular salt groups. Secondary outcomes included the change in diastolic BP (DBP), 24-h urinary biomarkers, and self-reported use and satisfaction with the study salt provided. Results A total of 494 (98%) participants completed 1 mo and 476 (95%) participants completed the 3-mo follow-up. At 3 mo, the salt substitute intervention significantly decreased the average SBP by 4.6 mmHg (95% CI: 3.0, 6.2, P  < 0.001) and DBP by 1.1 mmHg (95% CI: 0.2, 2.1 mmHg, P  = 0.02). There was a significant increase in 24-h urinary potassium excretion in the salt substitute group by 0.24 g/d (95% CI: 0.12, 0.35 g/d, P  < 0.001) and a decrease in the urinary sodium to potassium ratio by 0.71 (95% CI: 0.55, 0.87, P  < 0.0001) compared with the control group. Participants reported that they used the study salt nearly every day of the week (mean ± SD, 6.3 ± 1.8 d) and rated the taste of the study salts similarly. Conclusion The reduced-sodium added-potassium salt led to a substantial reduction in SBP in hypertensive patients, supporting salt substitution as an effective, low-cost intervention for BP lowering in rural India. We conducted an epidemiological study to identify the demographics and pre-operative characteristics of patients undergoing primary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in a multi-ethnic Asian population. A retrospective study was performed on 696 patients who registered in our ACL reconstruction registry from January 2013 to August 2016. Important inter-ethnic differences were found. Indian patients were significantly older compared to Malay and Chinese patients. Malay and Indian patients were more likely to be male, overweight, and obese compared to Chinese patients. Soccer was the predominant sport involved, although ethnic predominance in specific sports exists. Novel findings from this study include increased prevalence of concomitant chondral injuries in the Chinese population compared to Malays and Indians, and significantly higher rates of concomitant intra-articular injuries in soccer and basketball compared to netball. Land degradation is very severe in the subtropical monsoon-dominated region due to the uncertainty of rainfall in the long term, and most of the rainfall occurs with high intensity and kinetic energy over short time periods. So, keeping this scenario in view, the main objective of this work is to identify areas vulnerable to soil erosion and propose the most suitable model for soil erosion susceptibility in subtropical environment. The implementation of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques with a GIS environment for determining erosion susceptibility is highly acceptable in terms of optimal accuracy. The point-specific values of different elements from random sampling were considered for this study. Sensitivity analysis of the predicted models (i.e., analytical neural network, geographically weighted regression and GWR–ANN ensemble) was performed using the maximum causative factors and related primary field observations. The area under curve of receiver operating system reveals precision with 87.13, 89.57 and 91.64 for GWR, ANN and ensemble GWR–ANN, respectively. The ensemble GWR–ANN is more optimal than the GWR, ANN for determining water-induced soil erosion susceptibility. The process of soil erosion is not a unidirectional process, so the multidimensional impacts from the conditioning factors have to be determined precisely by considering the maximum possible factors as well as selecting optimal models for specific regions. Reduced-sodium, added-potassium salt substitutes have favorable effects on blood pressure, but have not been tested in India. The Salt Substitute in India Study (SSiIS) is a double-blinded, randomized-controlled trial designed to investigate the effects of reduced-sodium, added-potassium salt substitution to replace usual cooking salt use and blood pressure (BP) among hypertensive patients in rural India. The primary objective is to assess effects on systolic blood pressure at 3 months. The secondary objectives are to determine effects on diastolic blood pressure, urinary sodium, and potassium levels, and to determine acceptability of the intervention. Eligible individuals received usual salt (100% sodium chloride) or salt substitute (70% sodium chloride and 30% potassium chloride) to replace all salt required for cooking and seasoning in the household. A total of 502 participants aged ≥18 years with a history of hypertension were successfully recruited and randomized in a 1:1 ratio to intervention or control, between November 2019 and January 2020. Mean blood pressure at baseline was 133.5/83.6 mm Hg and 96% were using one or more blood pressure-lowering medications. The overall mean average 24-hour urinary sodium excretion was 2825 (SD, 1166) mg/L, which corresponds to a urinary salt excretion of 10.4 g/d. Baseline findings suggest sodium intake in this population significantly exceeds World Health Organization recommendations. The SSiIS trial has successfully recruited participants and is well placed to determine whether salt substitution is an effective means of lowering blood pressure for rural Indian patients with hypertension. Surface waters are one of the most easily pollutable natural resources because of their high mobility and universal solvent nature. One of the most severe environmental problems is the deterioration of the surface water quality due to rapid industrialization and urbanization. In India, surface water pollution is a major problem. The Ramganga River Basin, an essential sub-basin of the Ganges Basin, has been facing water quality problems as it flows through a densely populated and a large industrial area of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh in India. This study focused on the impact of smaller tributaries, namely Binau, Gagas, Deota, Mandal, Kho, Phika, Dhela, Kosi, Bhakra and Baigul on the hydrochemical characterization of the Ramganga River which in turns affects the water quality of the Ganges River. To this end, water samples from 10 tributaries of the Ramganga River were collected and analysed during the pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon periods of 2014. These water samples were analysed to determine various physicochemical and heavy metal characteristics. Concentration of turbidity (2252 NTU), electrical conductivity (EC: 975 µS/m), total dissolved solids (TDS: 529 mg/L), fluoride (F−: 3.47 mg/L), calcium (Ca2+: 108 mg/L), bicarbonate (HCO3−: 360 mg/L), iron (Fe: 126.58 mg/L), manganese (Mn: 2.490 mg/L) and chemical oxygen demand (COD: 77.98 mg/L) in the middle and lower regions of the Ramganga Basin, found to be higher than their prescribed limits of World Health Organization (WHO). These results could be due to increased effluent loading from wastewater discharges from the nearby urban settlement, sacred mass bathing points and agricultural runoff in tributaries. Modern observations have demonstrated that the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) rainfall shows a west-east dipole pattern influenced by the Circumglobal Teleconnection (CGT). In this study, we investigated the temporal evolution of the ISM rainfall and the dynamic mechanisms using a set of transient simulations (TraCE-21 ka, simulation of Transient Climate Evolution over the past 21,000 years) during the Last Deglaciation. The results show that, the responses of ISM rainfall always present west-east dipole patterns under different forcing factors and such responses are closely related to the CGT-like wave trains in the Northern Hemisphere summer. During the Last Deglaciation, the ISM is strengthened and summer precipitation is increased over northwestern India but decreased over northeastern India. With increased solar insolation and atmospheric CO 2, as well as reduced global ice volume, the positive-phase CGT-like wave trains, characterized by an anticyclonic anomaly over west-central Asia (WCA) and a cyclonic anomaly over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), tends to shift the South Asian High (SAH) westward and strengthens (weakens) the divergence in the upper-troposphere over northwestern (northeastern) India. Simultaneously, the intensification of the monsoon trough (MT) due to the local baroclinic atmospheric circulations over Arabian Peninsula-Iranian Plateau leads to the moisture convergence (divergence) over northwestern (northeastern) India in the lower troposphere. For the Younger Dryas (YD) cooling event, the pattern of CGT-like wave trains and Indian summer rainfall do the reverse. The Himalayan Mountains are the source region of one of the world's largest supplies of freshwater. The changes in glacier melt may lead to droughts as well as floods in the Himalayan basins, which are vulnerable to hydrological changes. This study used an integrated glacio-hydrological model, the Glacier and Snow Melt – WASMOD model (GSM-WASMOD), for hydrological projections under 21st century climate change by two ensembles of four global climate models (GCMs) under two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) and two bias-correction methods (i.e., the daily bias correction (DBC) and the local intensity scaling (LOCI)) in order to assess the future hydrological changes in the Himalayan Beas basin up to Pandoh Dam (upper Beas basin). Besides, the glacier extent loss during the 21st century was also investigated as part of the glacio-hydrological modeling as an ensemble simulation. In addition, a high-resolution WRF precipitation dataset suggested much heavier winter precipitation over the high-altitude ungauged area, which was used for precipitation correction in the study. The glacio-hydrological modeling shows that the glacier ablation accounted for about 5 % of the annual total runoff during 1986–2004 in this area. Under climate change, the temperature will increase by 1.8–2.8 ∘ C at the middle of the century (2046–2065), and by 2.3–5.4 ∘ C until the end of the century (2080–2099). It is very likely that the upper Beas basin will get warmer and wetter compared to the historical period. In this study, the glacier extent in the upper Beas basin is projected to decrease over the range of 63 %–87 % by the middle of the century and 89 %–100 % at the end of the century compared to the glacier extent in 2005. This loss in glacier area will in general result in a reduction in glacier discharge in the future, while the future streamflow is most likely to have a slight increase because of the increase in both precipitation and temperature under all the scenarios. However, there is widespread uncertainty regarding the changes in total discharge in the future, including the seasonality and magnitude. In general, the largest increase in river total discharge also has the largest spread. The uncertainty in future hydrological change is not only from GCMs, but also from the bias-correction methods and hydrological modeling. A decrease in discharge is found in July from DBC, while it is opposite for LOCI. Besides, there is a decrease in evaporation in September from DBC, which cannot be seen from LOCI. The study helps to understand the hydrological impacts of climate change in northern India and contributes to stakeholder and policymaker engagement in the management of future water resources in northern India. Oleanolic acid (OA) is a triterpenoid that exists widely in fruits, vegetables and medicinal herbs. OA is included in some dietary supplements and is used as a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in China, India, Asia, the USA and European countries. OA is effective in protecting against various hepatotoxicants, and one of the protective mechanisms is reprogramming the liver to activate the nuclear factor erythroid 2‐related factor 2 (Nrf2). OA derivatives, such as CDDO‐Im and CDDO‐Me, are even more potent Nrf2 activators. OA has recently been shown to also activate the Takeda G‐protein‐coupled receptor (TGR5). However, whereas a low dose of OA is hepatoprotective, higher doses and long‐term use of OA can produce liver injury, characterized by cholestasis. This paradoxical hepatotoxic effect occurs not only for OA, but also for other OA‐type triterpenoids. Dose and length of time of OA exposure differentiate the ability of OA to produce hepatoprotection vs hepatotoxicity. Hepatotoxicity produced by herbs is increasingly recognized and is of global concern. Given the appealing nature of OA in dietary supplements and its use as an alternative medicine around the world, as well as the development of OA derivatives (CDDO‐Im and CDDO‐Me) as therapeutics, it is important to understand not only that they program the liver to protect against hepatotoxic chemicals, but also how they produce hepatotoxicity. • Cretaceous oceanic redbeds in southern Tibet retain a primary remanence. • The central Tethyan Himalaya was constrained to a paleolatitude of 16.7°S at 75 Ma. • Greater India had a N-S extension of ∼910 km at its central part. • This Greater India extent provides a crucial constraint on Tethyan reconstruction. Knowledge of the size of Greater India is critical to deciphering the geodynamic processes of the India-Asia collision, as the size of this landmass primarily determines the amount of continental subduction and crustal shortening. Recently, paleomagnetic data revealed the rapid drift of a Himalayan microcontinent (i.e., the Tibetan Himalaya) during ca. 75–61 Ma, which resulted in a triple-stage India-Asia collision scenario. This scenario implies a relatively small Greater India at 75 Ma (Late Cretaceous), but this hypothesis is only based on one high quality Campanian paleomagnetic pole from the eastern part of the Tethyan Himalaya. Here we report comprehensive petrographic, rock magnetic and paleomagnetic studies on Upper Cretaceous oceanic affinity red beds (CORBs) of the Chuangde Formation from the central part of the Tethyan Himalaya at 83.6°E longitude. These CORBs are characterized by multi-component magnetizations carried dominantly by detrital hematite, which retains a primary remanent magnetization. Accordingly, the high temperature magnetization components (585−690°C) were isolated by high-resolution thermal demagnetization. The new paleomagnetic data provide, after applying an inclination shallowing correction, a Campanian paleopole of 43.3°N/258.3°E, which places the central part of the Tethyan Himalaya at a paleolatitude of 16.7° ± 1.8°S at ca. 75 Ma. Comparison of this paleolatitude with the expected paleolatitude of India, using its apparent polar wander path, shows that the N-S extent of central Greater India was ∼910 km during the middle Campanian. Our paleomagnetic data are in agreement with balanced cross section reconstructions and seismologic interpretations of the India-Asia collision zone and provide additional support for the North India Sea hypothesis. The improved estimate of the size of Greater India has several implications for Indian continental crust behavior and results in an updated reconstruction of the India-Asia collision system in the Campanian. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6) is a powerful greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential. While SF 6 emissions from urban areas have been extensively studied, our knowledge about SF 6 concentrations in the oceanic atmosphere and its air-sea exchange remains limited. Herein, the concentrations of SF 6 in the atmosphere and surface seawater of the WPO (Western Pacific Ocean) and EIO (Eastern Indian Ocean) were comprehensively characterized from 2019 to 2022 in the first long-term study. The mean mixing ratios of SF 6 over the WPO and EIO during 2019–2020 (2021–2022) were 10.9 (11.2) and 10.9 (11.1) ppt, respectively. The atmospheric SF 6 concentration over the WPO and EIO increased at rates of 0.40 ± 0.06 and 0.58 ± 0.28 ppt yr−1, respectively, surpassing previously reported annual growth rates. The faster growth was primarily attributed to the influence of polluted air masses originating from eastern Asian countries, particularly Japan, Northeast China, and India. This might explain why the radiative forcing caused by SF 6 in the study region was higher than the global average. The concentrations of SF 6 in the surface seawater of the WPO and EIO ranged from 0.33 to 2.54 fmol kg−1, and the distribution was affected by atmospheric concentrations and ocean currents. Estimated air-sea fluxes revealed that the ocean acted as a significant sink of atmospheric SF 6 , and the preliminary estimation suggested oceanic uptake accounts for about 7% of annual global SF 6 emissions. Based on these findings, we tentatively suggest that the strength of the ocean as a sink of SF 6 may warrant reassessment. The global oceanic uptake of SF 6 has the potential to reduce its global abundance and environmental impacts. A low-glycaemic-index (GI) breakfast has been shown to lower blood glucose levels throughout the day. A wide variety of breakfast foods are consumed, but their GI values are largely unknown, hence limiting consumers’ ability to select healthier options. This study investigated the GI values of ten common breakfast (five Asian and five Western) foods in this region using a randomised, cross-over study design. Participants arrived after an overnight fast, and fasting blood sample was taken before participants consumed test foods. Next, blood samples were taken at fixed intervals for 180 min. Glycaemic and insulinaemic responses to test foods were calculated as incremental AUC over 120 min, which were subsequently reported as glycaemic and insulinaemic indices. In all, nineteen healthy men (nine Chinese and ten Indians) aged 24·7 (sem 0·4) years with a BMI of 21·7 (sem 0·4) kg/m2 completed the study. Asian breakfast foods were of medium (white bun filled with red bean paste=58 (sem 4); Chinese steamed white bun=58 (sem 3)) to high GI (rice idli=85 (sem 4); rice dosa=76 (sem 5); upma=71 (sem 6)), whereas Western breakfast foods were all of low GI (whole-grain biscuit=54 (sem 5); whole-grain biscuit filled with peanut butter=44 (sem 3); whole-grain oat muesli=55 (sem 4); whole-grain oat protein granola=51 (sem 4); whole-grain protein cereal=49 (sem 3)). The GI of test foods negatively correlated with protein (rs−0·366), fat (rs−0·268) and dietary fibre (rs−0·422) (all P<0·001). GI values from this study contribute to the worldwide GI database, and may assist healthcare professionals in recommending low-GI breakfast to assist in lower daily glycaemia among Asians who are susceptible to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Using primary survey data collected in two sub-districts of Gujarat, India, on a unique programme that trains rural women with low human capital to repair village water handpumps, we examine the effect of skills training on their socioeconomic outcomes. We find that participating in the training programme significantly increases the probability of being employed outside household farms and women's contribution to household income in the lean season. Further, we find that programme participants spend more on female-favoured consumption goods and have a greater say in household spending decisions, though only from the women's perspective and not husbands' or adult sons' perspective. The interannual zonal movement of the interface between the Indian summer monsoon and the East Asian summer monsoon (IIE), associated with the spring sea surface temperature (SST) seesaw mode (SSTSM) over the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) and the tropical central-western Pacific (TCWP), is studied for the period 1979-2008. The observational analysis is based on Twentieth Century Reanalysis data (version 2) of atmospheric circulations, Extended Reconstructed SST data (version 3), and the Climate Prediction Center Merged Analysis of Precipitation. The results indicate that the IIE's zonal movement is significantly and persistently correlated with the TIO-TCWP SSTSM, from spring to summer. The results of two case studies resemble those obtained by regression analysis. Experiments using an atmospheric general circulation model (ECHAM6) substantiate the key physical processes revealed in the observational analysis. When warmer (colder) SSTs appear in the TIO and colder (warmer) SSTs occur in the TCWP, the positive (negative) SSTSM forces anomalous easterly (westerly) winds over the Bay of Bengal (BOB), South China Sea (SCS), and western North Pacific (WNP). The anomalous easterly (westerly) winds further result in a weakened (strengthened) southwest summer monsoon over the BOB and a strengthened (weakened) southeast summer monsoon over the SCS and WNP. Background: Diabetes management is a growing health care challenge worldwide. eHealth can revolutionize diabetes care, the success of which depends on end user acceptance.Objective: This study aims to understand the readiness and acceptance of eHealth services for diabetes care among the general population, perceived advantages and disadvantages of eHealth, and factors associated with eHealth readiness and acceptance in a multiethnic Asian country.Methods: In this cross-sectional epidemiological study, participants (N=2895) were selected through disproportionate stratified random sampling from a population registry. Citizens or permanent residents of Singapore aged >18 years were recruited. The data were captured through computer-assisted personal interviews. An eHealth questionnaire was administered in one of four local languages (English, Chinese, Malay, or Tamil), as preferred by the participant. Bivariate chi-square analyses were performed to compare the sociodemographic characteristics and perception of advantages and disadvantages of eHealth services between the diabetes and nondiabetes groups. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine factors associated with eHealth readiness and acceptance. All analyses were weighted using survey weights to account for the complex survey design.Results: The sample comprised participants with (n=436) and without (n=2459) diabetes. eHealth readiness was low, with 47.3% of the overall sample and 75.7% of the diabetes group endorsing that they were not ready for eHealth (P<.001). The most acceptable eHealth service overall was booking appointments (67.4%). There was a significantly higher preference in the diabetes group for face-to-face sessions for consultation with the clinician (nondiabetes: 83.5% vs diabetes: 92.6%; P<.001), receiving prescriptions (61.9% vs 79.3%; P<.001), referrals to other doctors (51.4% vs 72.2%; P<.001), and receiving health information (34% vs 63.4%; P<.001). The majority of both groups felt that eHealth requires users to be computer literate (90.5% vs 94.3%), does not build clinician-patient rapport compared with face-to-face sessions (77.5% vs 81%), and might not be credible (56.8% vs 64.2%; P=.03). Age (≥35 years), ethnicity (Indian), and lower education status had lower odds of eHealth readiness. Age (≥35 years), ethnicity (Indian), lower education status (primary school), BMI (being underweight), and marital status (being single) were associated with a lower likelihood of eHealth acceptance. Among only those with diabetes, a longer duration of diabetes (4-18 years), higher education (degree or above), and younger age (23-49 years) were associated with eHealth readiness, whereas younger age and income (SGD 2000-3999 [US $1481-$2961]) were associated with acceptance.Conclusions: Overall, an unfavorable attitude toward eHealth was observed, with a significantly higher number of participants with diabetes reporting their unwillingness to use these services for their diabetes care. Purpose: To describe prevalence and risk factors for retinopathy in an Asian Indian population without diabetes. Methods: A population-based cross-sectional study of 3400 Indians aged 40. 80 years residing in Singapore was conducted. Retinopathy was assessed from retinal photographs by trained graders using modified Airlie House Classification System. Risk factors were assessed from standardized interviews, clinical examinations and laboratory investigations. Diabetes mellitus was defined as glycosylated haemoglobin ≥6.5%, use of diabetic medication or physician diagnosis of diabetes. Results: Among the 1900 individuals without diabetes, mean HbA1c was 5.7% and mean systolic blood pressure was 132.4 mmHg. Age-standardized prevalence of retinopathy was 5.05% (n = 98; 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.07-6.21), with no significant difference in retinopathy prevalence between males (6.15%) and females (4.13%). Among non-diabetic persons with retinopathy, 96.9% (n = 95) had signs of minimal-to-mild retinopathy while 3.06% (n = 3) had moderate-tosevere retinopathy. After adjusting for multiple covariables, retinopathy signs were associated with higher levels of HbA1c (odds ratio [OR], 2.4; 95%CI, 1.3-4.5; per % increase), systolic blood pressure (OR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.01-1.03; per mmHg increase) and serum creatinine (OR, 1.005; 95% CI, 1.002-1.009; per mM increase), but not C-reactive protein, cigarette smoking or lipid levels. The enigmatic geodynamic processes involved in the India-Asia collision shape our understanding of uplift and deformation of the Tibetan Plateau and the subsequent changes in the land-sea distribution pattern, monsoon-arid environments and biotic evolution in Central-Eastern Asia. However, the current geodynamic models dealing with the India-Asia collision history exhibit significant discrepancies in how, when and where exactly the collision of India with Asia occurred. Recently, we proposed a new hypothesis that favored the opening and closure of a North India Sea during the late Cretaceous to Paleogene. Here we present new additional paleomagnetic data from the red siliceous shales and cherts of the Sangdanlin Formation, which were deposited on the most distal continental margin of the Tethyan Himalaya terrane, i.e. the southern margin of the Neo-Tethys Ocean, during the middle Paleocene. The combination of our new and previously reported paleomagnetic data shows that the Tethyan Himalaya was at a paleolatitude of 14.1° ± 1.9°N during the interval 62.5–59.2 Ma and refines the maximum size of the North India Sea to about 2200 ± 500 km. Combining our geodynamic model with recently published paleomagnetic data from the Kohistan-Ladakh arc, we conclude that the India-Asia collision was a triple-stage process, which involved an arc-continent collision followed by a two-stage continent-continent collision. The arc-continent collision occurred at ca. 64 Ma between the Tibetan Himalaya (Tethyan Himalaya plus Greater Himalaya) and the Trans-Tethyan subduction zone at a paleolatitude of ~8°N. The initial continent-continent collision took place at ca. 61 Ma between the Tibetan Himalaya (plus the accreted Trans-Tethyan subduction zone) and Lhasa terranes at a paleolatitude of ~14°N. The final continent-continent collision occurred during 53–47 Ma between India and the Tibetan Himalaya, diachronously suturing the North India Sea from west to east. The triple-stage collision scenario is in agreement with the history of India-Asia convergence rates, and is reflected by the presence of three slab remnants below Tibet and India as documented by seismic tomographic imaging. Air pollution is a leading public health concern around the world. Assessing the public's knowledge about air quality is critical to calibrate public health interventions. However, previous efforts to measure knowledge about air quality (AQIQ) have not relied on consistent and validated measures, thus precluding cross-country comparisons. We aimed to develop a robust scale to assess AQIQ and tested it in multiple countries. To evaluate the psychometric properties and select the best performing items out of 10 AQIQ questions, we used methods from classical test theory and item response theory. We evaluated the scales using several scalability measures, including the Kuder-Richardson Formula 20 (KR-20), Loevinger's H, as well as trace lines. Volunteers from the United States (US, n = 400), India (n = 403), and China (n = 443) were recruited to validate the scale. Multiple linear regression was used to estimate the association between demographic factors and AQIQ. We found that participants from India had the highest AQIQ. In addition, not all questions performed well in each country. The scale was pruned and shorter subscales were validated. In the US, we obtained a 4-item scale (KR20 = 0.53, Loevinger's H = 0.34). In India, we obtained a 6-item scale (KR20 = 0.56; Loevinger's H = 0.48 for just 2 items). In China, we obtained a 5-item scale (KR20 = 0.39; Loevinger's H = 0.41 for just 2 items). Compared to the 10-item scale, the pruned scales showed stronger associations between measures of socioeconomic status and AQIQ. The results were robust to the scale used. Overall, general knowledge questions measured AQIQ more effectively in the US and India whereas knowledge of the air quality index better measured AQIQ in China. The findings suggest that careful measurement and validation are essential to develop knowledge scales for use in public health and environmental research. Aims: To determine the breath alcohol elimination rate (AER) and Widmark factor derived from the maximum breath alcohol concentration (rpeak BrAC) in Chinese and Indians in Singapore, and to evaluate the contribution of genetic and non-genetic factors to variability of AER and rpeak BrAC. Methods: A total of 180 subjects ingested a vodka–orange juice mixture, together with a standardized meal and underwent a series of BrAC measurements. Results: Significant inter-ethnic differences in AER and rpeak BrAC were observed in females and males, respectively. Alcohol dehydrogenase 1B (ADH1B) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2) genotypes were identified as significant predictors for AER among males, accounting for 8.5% (P = 0.048) and 23.4% (P < 0.001) of the variance, respectively. ADH1B genotype was identified as a significant predictor for rpeak BrAC among males, accounting for 17.1% of the variance (P = 0.001). In females, however, none of the genotypes were found to be significant predictors for breath AER, and rpeak BrAC. Conclusion: ALDH2 and/or ADH1B genotypes in males, but not in females, appear to contribute, albeit modestly, to variability in AER and rpeak BrAC. The sub-Himalayan Terai and Duars, the important outermost zones comprising the plains of East India, are known as the reservoirs of ethnic diversity. Analysis of the paternal genetic diversity of the populations inhabiting these regions and their genetic relationships with adjacent Himalayan and other Asian populations has not been addressed empirically. In the present investigation, we undertook a Y-chromosome phylogeographic study on 10 populations (n=375) representing four different linguistic groups from the sub-Himalayan Terai and Duars regions of East India. The high-resolution analysis of Y-chromosome haplogroup variations based on 76 binary markers revealed that the sub-Himalayan paternal gene pool is extremely heterogeneous. Three major haplogroups, namely H, O and R, are shared across the four linguistic groups. The Indo-European-speaking castes exhibit more haplogroup diversity than the tribal groups. The findings of the present investigation suggest that the sub-Himalayan gene pools have received predominant Southeast Asian contribution. In addition, the presence of Northeast and South Asian signatures illustrate multiple events of population migrations as well as extensive genetic admixture amongst the linguistic groups. Irrigation with arsenic contaminated groundwater in the Bengal Delta may lead to As accumulation in the soil and rice grain. The dynamics of As concentration and speciation in paddy fields during dry season (boro) rice cultivation were investigated at 4 sites in Bangladesh and West Bengal, India. Three sites which were irrigated with high As groundwater had elevated As concentrations in the soils, showing a significant gradient from the irrigation inlet across the field. Arsenic concentration and speciation in soil pore water varied temporally and spatially; higher As concentrations were associated with an increasing percentage of arsenite, indicating a reductive mobilization. Concentrations of As in rice grain varied by 2–7 fold within individual fields and were poorly related with the soil As concentration. A field site employing alternating flooded-dry irrigation produced the lowest range of grain As concentration, suggesting a lower soil As availability caused by periodic aerobic conditions. Abstract: Mini core collection plays an important role in evaluating genetic resources of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.). This study aimed at comparing the genetic diversities of a domestic and exotic peanut mini core collections and providing basic data for germplasm introduction and peanut breeding. The exotic mini core collection, which was introduced from the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT, Patancheru, India), consisted of 168 accessions, whereas the Chinese mini core collection consisted of 298 accessions. A total of 26 polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were used to evaluate the genetic diversity of these genotypes and their similarities. The similarity coefficient ranged from 0.49 to 0.99 among the total 466 accessions and the largest genetic distance was between “L2 Gangguo” from the Chinese core collection and “ICG12625” from the ICRISAT core collection. Among the 6 botanical types of peanut, the fastigiata type had the largest genetic diversity indices in both Chinese and ICRISAT mini core collections, which were 1.11 and 0.97, respectively. The hypogaea type had the second largest diversity with genetic diversity indices of 0.89 and 0.88 for Chinese and ICRISAT mini core collections, respectively. The genetic distance between the 2 mini core collections was larger than that within a mini core collection. Particularly, the aequatoriana genotype ICG12625 from ICRISAT had the largest differences to the Chinese genotypes. According to similarity coefficient and genetic diversity index, the genetic diversity was greater among genotypes from the Chinese mini core collection than that from the ICRISAT mini core collection. Abstract: A bibliometric analysis based on Science Citation Index (SCI) published by Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) was carried out to identify the global research related to lead in drinking water field from 1991 to 2007 and to improve the understanding of research trends in the same period. The results from this analysis indicate that there have been an increasing number of annual publications mainly during two periods: from 1992 to 1997 and from 2004 to 2007. United States produced 37% of all pertinent articles followed by India with 8.0% and Canada with 4.8%. Science of the Total Environment published the most articles followed by Journal American Water Works Association and Toxicology. Summary of the most frequently used keywords are also provided. “Cadmium” was the most popular author keyword in the 17years. In recent years, many European companies have listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), and companies from emerging market countries such as Israel, China, and India have listed not only on the NYSE, but on various other American and European exchanges such as the Nasdaq and the London Stock Exchange (LSE). At the same time, growing competition among exchanges has led to consolidation of the industry through mergers and alliances. In this article, the authors explore the main factors in corporate listing decisions as well as the expected effects on listing standards of both the growing competition and the recent wave of alliances and mergers among exchanges. When choosing an exchange, corporate issuers are likely to consider the listing requirements and reputations of the exchanges, as well as the sophistication of investors who trade on those exchanges and the extent of their knowledge of the firm's industry and business. As a general rule, value-maximizing companies can be expected to list on the most reputable exchange they can, but may also choose listings (in some cases, dual or multiple listings) on less reputable (typically local) exchanges with more investors who are familiar with the issuer's industry or products. When setting their listing standards, publicly traded exchanges devote considerable attention to finding the optimal listing and disclosure standards, and may consider adjusting them to changes in circumstances. The setting and enforcement of the appropriate listing standards are the main determinant of an exchange's reputation, which in turn determines the kinds of companies that will choose to list on it. Exchanges with the highest listing standards and reputations are likely to work hard to maintain them, while exchanges with lesser reputations will seek to carve out niches by making opportunistic use of lower (though not too low) listing standards while possibly seeking alliances or mergers. But if less reputable exchanges use their lower listing standards (and fees) as a means of competing for listings with other exchanges, this will not necessarily lead to a “race to the bottom” in listing standards. Two new hemiterpenes, utililactone (1) and epiutililactone (2), along with nine known compounds (3-11), were isolated from the leaves of Prinsepia utilis. Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) incidences vary with genetic, geographical and ethnic dietary background of patients while angiogenesis is modulated through exquisite interplay of tumor-stromal interactions of biological macromolecules. We hypothesized that comprehensive analysis of four biomarkers modulating angiogenesis in PCa progression in two diverse populations might explain the variance in the incidence rates. Results: Immunohistochemical analysis of 42 PCa biopsies reveals that though Anx-II expression is lost in both the Indian and American population with Gleason scores (GS) ranging between 6 and 10, up to 25 % of cells in the entire high grade (GS > 8) PD PCa samples from US show intense focal membrane staining for Anx-II unlike similarly graded specimens from India. Consistent with this observation, the prostate cancer cell lines PC-3, DU- 145 and MDA PCa 2A, but not LNCaP-R, LNCAP-UR or MDA PCa 2B cell lines, express Anx-II. Transcriptional reactivation of Anx-II gene with Aza-dC could not entirely account for loss of Anx-II protein in primary PCa. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) was moderately expressed in most of high grade PIN and some MD PCa and surrounding stroma. COX-2 was not expressed in PD PCa (GS ~7--10), while adjacent smooth muscles cells stained weakly positive. Decorin expression was observed only in high grade PIN but not in any of the prostate cancers, atrophy or BPH while stromal areas of BPH stained intensively for DCN and decreased with advancing stages of PCa. Versican expression was weak in most of the MD PCa, moderate in all of BPH, moderately focal in PD PC, weak and focal in PIN, atrophy and adjacent stroma. Conclusions: Expression of pro- and anti-angiogenic modulators changes with stage of PCa but correlates with angiogenic status. Focal membrane staining of Anx-II reappears in high grade PCa specimens only from US indicating differential expression of Anx-II. COX-2 stained stronger in American specimens compared to Indian specimens. The sequential expression of DCN and VCN in progressive stages was similar in specimens from India and USA indicating no population-based differences. The rapid urbanization in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) area has aggravated the cross-regional pollution of PM 2.5 and aroused concern about the conflicts between urban development and air quality. This study aims to examine the spatial-temporal PM 2.5 variations in the BRI region, in which area many countries are undergoing rapid urbanization and the main field of future urbanization, to delineate the driving mechanism of PM 2.5 accumulation or dissipation. Previous studies have analyzed the PM 2.5 distribution at the national level, providing limited information regarding regional heterogeneity in urbanization and PM 2.5 concentrations within each country. Additionally, the regional differences in the driving mechanisms of urbanization factors on PM 2.5 concentrations have not been thoroughly investigated within the BRI areas. In this study, remote sensing raster data was combined with geographic grid units to examine variations in urbanization and PM 2.5 within the BRI region, identifying "typical regions" where urbanization could enhance PM 2.5 accumulation. The main results are as follows: i) The spatial autocorrelation of urbanization and PM 2.5 concentrations has gradually strengthened, showing consistent high-value distributions in the North China Plain, Ganges Plain and indicating a synergistic growth among emerging developing regions such as China, India, and the Persian Gulf Coast. ii) The correlation between urbanization and PM 2.5 concentrations exhibited a distinct trend of differentiation within the BRI regions. The influence of urbanization on PM 2.5 changed from agglomeration to dispersion, forming a "typical region" category composed of ten countries, including China, India, and Morocco. iii) The three main urbanization-related factors for PM 2.5 accumulation in the "typical regions" for 2005–2016 were energy pollution emission, economic activities, and human activities. By 2023, the effects of energy pollution and economic activities are expected to converge in some "typical region" countries. India-Asia continental collision–induced volcanic gas emissions are thought to have played an important role in driving Cenozoic atmospheric CO2 variations, yet the details of how the deep carbon cycle may influence volcanic CO2 degassing are not understood. We present a novel study employing Mg-Zn-Mo isotopic compositions of Cenozoic ultrapotassic lavas from NW Tibet. The negative Mg-Zn isotope correlation (δ26Mg = −0.39‰ to −0.19‰; δ66Zn = +0.27‰ to +0.36‰), bolstered by petrographic analysis of mantle-derived xenoliths from these lavas, demonstrates that the ultrapotassic magmas originated from a lithospheric mantle source that had been enriched by recycled carbonate-bearing sediments rich in calcite and dolomite. Very low δ98Mo values (−0.78‰ to 0‰) relative to the average continental crust (δ98Mo = +0.10‰ to +0.35‰) further indicate that the sedimentary components were derived from the subducted Indian continental crust after its dehydration. Monte Carlo modeling estimates that the input flux of carbon (elemental C) from such sediments into the lithospheric mantle is ∼5.6 Mt/yr, with a predicted CO2 emission rate of ∼15.5 Mt/yr. We suggest that the still ongoing subduction of the Indian tectonic plate has played a crucial role in introducing substantial quantities of carbonate-rich sediments into the Tibetan lithospheric mantle, leading to the sequestration of large amounts of CO2 via carbonatite metasomatism. Hence, partial melting of such a carbon-rich mantle reservoir in an orogenic setting provides the positive feedback mechanism that can explain the high flux of volcanic CO2 during IndiaAsia collision. These findings not only highlight the importance of continental subduction, sediment recycling, and mantle metasomatism by carbon-rich melts/fluids in the generation of Tibetan ultrapotassic volcanism, but they also show how the deep carbon cycle influences volcanic CO2 degassing. The novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has brought countries around the world to a standstill in the early part of 2020. Several nations and territories around the world insisted their population stay indoors for practicing social distance in order to avoid infecting the disease. Consequently, industrial activities, businesses, and all modes of traveling have halted. On the other hand, the pollution level decreased 'temporarily' in our living environment. As fewer pollutants are supplied in to the hydrosphere, and human recreational activities are stopped completely during the lockdown period, we hypothesize that the hydrological residence time (HRT) has increased in the semi-enclosed or closed lake bodies, which can in turn increase the primary productivity. To validate our hypothesis, and to understand the effect of lockdown on primary productivity in aquatic systems, we quantitatively estimated the chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations in different lake bodies using established Chl-a retrieval algorithm. The Chl-a monitored using Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 sensor in the lake bodies of Wuhan, China, showed an elevated concentration of Chl-a. In contrast, no significant changes in Chl-a are observed for Vembanad Lake in India. Further analysis of different geo-environments is necessary to validate the hypothesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the rapid development of urbanization, the contamination of heavy metals in urban soils has become one of the major concerns of environmental and risk to humans. The main objective was to determine the contamination of six heavy metals in 25 urban soils and also to evaluate the associated health risk via diverse indices for adults and children. The mean concentration of Pb (47.48 mg/kg), Cr (43.24 mg/kg), Cu (40.64 mg/kg), Zn (34.68 mg/kg), Co (16.54 mg/kg), and Ni (7.55 mg/kg) exceeded the geochemical background values. Pb and Zn were closely attributed to traffic sources. Geo-accumulation index (I geo) showed that Pb and Co in the soils were at the moderately pollution level, while 4% of soil samples were moderately polluted to heavily pollution levels by Cu. Enrichment factor (EF) showed that soils presented minor to severe anthropogenic pollution levels in the investigated region. The heavy metals to the non-carcinogenic risk of humans in the investigated region are absolutely from Cr and Pb, while the carcinogenic risk is controlled by Cr, and the remaining metals pose no possible risk to the local people. Specially, children had larger health risks in terms of non-carcinogenic risks than adults which may be related to their behavioral and physiological characteristics. The soiling of solar panels from dry deposition affects the overall efficiency of power output from solar power plants. This study focuses on the detection and monitoring of sand deposition (wind-blown dust) on photovoltaic (PV) solar panels in arid regions using multitemporal remote sensing data. The study area is located in Bhadla solar park of Rajasthan, India which receives numerous sandstorms every year, carried by westerly and north-westerly winds. This study aims to use Google Earth Engine (GEE) in monitoring the soiling phenomenon on PV panels. Optical imageries archived in the GEE platform were processed for the generation of various sand indices such as the normalized differential sand index (NDSI), the ratio normalized differential soil index (RNDSI), and the dry bare soil index (DBSI). Land surface temperature (LST) derived from Landsat 8 thermal bands were also used to correlate with sand indices and to observe the pattern of sand accumulation in the target region. Additionally, high-resolution PlanetScope images were used to quantitatively validate the sand indices. Our study suggests that the use of freely available satellite data with semiautomated processing on GEE can be a useful alternative to manual methods. The developed method can provide near real-time monitoring of soiling on PV panels cost-effectively. This study concludes that the DBSI method has a comparatively higher potential (89.6% Accuracy, 0.77 Kappa) in the detection of sand deposition on PV panels as compared to other indices.
