Iron has been one of the most critical technotraditions that had lasting impact on social formation throughout the Iron Age and historical period. Iron was used in warfare and subsistence economy. Our knowledge on ancient iron smelting and working have generally been derived from ethnography and ethnohistory, which is by all means, time, region, and raw material specific. Scientific analyses of ancient iron have contributed in understanding this heritage to a respectable extent, yet a comprehensive knowledge about the evolution of iron making through time and space in India eludes us. In this work, a comparative study of iron artefacts from two Iron Age/Megalithic‐Early Historic sites of Tamil Nadu, south India, that is, Mangadu (burial site) and Ambal (habitation‐cum‐burial site) is carried out to understand the iron thermal‐processing capabilities. The retrieved artefacts were examined using X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) for elemental composition. The imaging of the artefacts was done using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), and Optical Microscopy (OM). In addition, phase identification was performed using X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive X‐ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Combination of these analyses illustrates that inhabitants of Mangadu and Ambal were aware of the iron alloy manufacturing/processing techniques such as forging and hammering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carrying out of indoor radon studies have been done in the 50 dwellings of Bathinda district (Punjab), India using LR-115 type II cellulose nitrate films in the bare mode. The films were exposed into four consecutive trimesters, i.e. from March 2010 to February 2011. The work has been undertaken for health risk assessment. The calibration constant of 1 track cm-2 day-1 equal to 50 Bqm-3 (Becquerel/m³) was used. In the present study average radon values vary from 83.15 (BTD-7) to 124.35 (BTD-8) Bqm-3 in different villages, which are higher than the word average value of 40 Bqm-3. The inhabitants of the area of study receive average annual radiation dose varying from 1.41 (BTD-7) - 2.12 (BTD-8) mSv (millisievert). The effective dose is found to be less than lower limit of the recommended action level (3-10 mSv). The value of radon for the first floor portion of the same dwelling is lower in comparison to the ground floor. The values in the cemented floors are lower than in the dwellings with the un-cemented floors. The indoor radon values are more in very poorly ventilated dwellings in comparison to the very well-ventilated dwellings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective Feeling stigmatized or having comorbid depression in a PWE may significantly influence epilepsy care and treatment. An important contributory factor to this can be the expressed emotions (EEs) from family, friends, or society. The present study aimed at understanding the influence of EEs, as exhibited by close relatives, on the perception of stigma and comorbid depression experienced by PWEs. Method Eighty PWEs aged 18 years and above, both genders, visiting neurology OPD in AIIMS Hospital, were recruited. Using the PHQ-09, we subdivided them into Group I (PWEs with comorbid depression) and Group II (PWEs without comorbid depression), followed by administration of Levels of Expressed Emotions Scale and Stigma Scale for Epilepsy, respectively. Results The comparative analysis, using independent t -test (for categorical data), Pearson's correlation (for continuous data), and multivariate regression analysis, reflected significant influence of EEs on depression and stigma, with more than 20% of the participants reporting comorbid depression, out of which more than 50% further expressed feelings of inferiority or disgrace due to the ways in which family or society discriminated them from healthy persons, thereby highlighting a greater associations of high EEs as opposed to low EEs from key individuals on patients' perception of stigma or feeling of depression. Conclusion The result suggested that EEs from a relative might go unnoticed but may significantly overwhelm the patient, thereby making him succumb to depression or feeling stigmatized. The analysis of such a clinical profile and relationship between EEs and perceived stigma/depression may help us understand the pattern of attribution styles adopted by PWEs, thereby utilizing it further for enhancing the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy for facilitating sustained recovery and improved quality of life for PWEs. The characteristics of the hydrate-bearing sediments affect the formation and dissociation of gas hydrate in sediments. The mineral composition, their dispersion, and chemical composition of hydrate-bearing sediment samples plays a dominant role in the hydrate stability condition and its economic development. In this paper, the physical properties of hydrate-bearing sediment of India are compared with each other. The sediment samples are taken from the Krishan-Godavari basin (Depth—127.5 and 203.2 mbsf), Mahanadi basin (Depth—217.4 mbsf), and Kerala-Konkan basin (Depth—217.4 mbsf). The saturation of the gas hydrate observed at these sites is between 3 and 50%. Particle size is an important parameter of the sediments because it provides information on the transportation and deposition of sediment and the deposition history. In the present study, we investigated the mineralogy of hydrate-bearing sediments by chemical analysis and X-ray Diffraction. XRD, FTIR, and Raman Spectroscopy distinguished the mineralogical behavior of sediments. Quartz is the main mineral (66.8% approx.) observed in the gas hydrate-bearing sediments. The specific surface area was higher for the sediment sample from the Mahanadi basin, representing the sediments' dissipation degree. This characterization will give important information for the possible recovery of gas from Indian hydrate reservoirs by controlling the behavior of host sediment. SEM analysis shows the morphology of the sediments, which can affect the mechanical properties of the hydrate-bearing sediments. Iron was a new entrant and a must in weaponry in the 2nd and 1st millennium BCE. There is every possibility of iron being used for generations, and deposited or hidden it for use in the times of need or even as a part of religious activities. Dating iron has been mostly based on the associated finds, and iron has been repeatedly melted, shaped and reused. Differentiating the iron in use at present from that in earlier times has been a challenge, and requires the dating of artefacts. Chemical objects characterization is contextual-specific. Three iron objects recovered from a cave near Triprangode, Kerala, India was studied using various analytical techniques to understand the metallurgical characteristics such as microstructure, phases, inclusions and production technology. The artefact was also dated using accelerator mass spectroscopy (AMS). The three artefacts included two swords and a tripod, which were reported to belong to the 1st millennium BCE based on associated pottery finds and typological comparison. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques were employed for microstructure analysis. X-ray fluorescence analysis was used to identify the elements present in the samples. X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses were performed to identify the phases present in the samples. AMS radiocarbon dating was carried out to determine the age of the artefacts. A combination of these techniques helped identify the iron-making process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Malnutrition is among the top 6 risk factors for death in India, and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is regarded as one of the major contributors, with nationwide prevalence > 60 % among women. Nutritional anemia accounts for ∼70 % anemia prevalence among Indian children and adolescents, specifically in females. Evidence suggests that current supplementation and fortification practices alone may make little difference in reducing the risk of IDA. Sustainable food-based strategies need to be determined. This review provides an overview of IDA in India and elaborates the food-based solutions. Factors that affect iron bioavailability have been discussed while exploring different plant-based food synergies to improve iron absorption. Nutritional and non-nutritional challenges have been highlighted. A case study has been incorporated that analyses Health Management Information System data for certain pregnancy outcomes among severely anemic pregnant women. It highlights the need for implementing alternative food-based strategies apart from the government programs. Iron-rich plant sources, with appropriate ratios of bioavailability enhancers and inhibitors can be utilized to develop effective products. However, this cannot be easily achieved. Obtaining higher concentrations of iron from food sources alone is challenging. Processing techniques may lower antinutrient content but risk mineral loss and vitamin degradation from the food matrix. Most studies focus on increasing iron content via fortification rather than enhancing its bioavailability. Safety, accessibility, and affordability issues of previous approaches need to be addressed. It is essential to understand the chemistry behind iron bio-accessibility and absorption to develop ready-to-eat plant-based food formulations, with highly bioavailable iron, which could be a plausible solution. Environmental degradation in the form of water shortage and uncertainty has severely affected the food systems across the globe. Especially in India, which is dominated by rain-fed farmers, the need for sustainable water resource and its management at farm level is imperative for farming livelihoods and food security of the country. Rainwater harvesting in on-farm reservoirs (OFR) can enable crop diversification, year round cropping and seasonal vegetable cultivation in rain-fed farming systems in India. However appropriate sizing of OFR remains a serious concern especially for small and marginal farmers with limited land holdings. In this study, a novel and comprehensive simulation-optimization model was developed to determine the optimal size and utilization of OFR. The simulation consisted of water balance of soil and OFR using hydrological analysis for last 28 years, through which supplement irrigation needs and, rainwater harvesting potential was estimated. Optimal use of available water in OFR was designed using a multi-stage process wherein the model generated, compared and screened appropriate vegetable plans for Rabi cultivation. The model was simulated for different OFR sizes and the optimal size was chosen based on its economic feasibility. To demonstrate the model, a case study was simulated wherein high supplement irrigation was estimated, indicating a severe limitation in rain-fed farming. A minimum OFR size of 9.9% of the total land was required. With an increase in OFR sizes, the profits increased however, the growth rate declined as the cropping area was reduced. An OFR size of 15.5% of total land was found to be optimal which gave benefit-cost ratio and payback period of 2.4 and 6.8 years respectively. Trends in cultivation plans for different sizes of OFR was observed wherein for small OFR sizes, the model generated fewer options of cultivation plans and preferred crops with high water productivity over crops with high profitability. The proposed model is generic and applicable at multiple scales and scenarios. The model could be used by environmental decision makers, farm managers, policy makers and researchers to determine the feasibility of any water resource intervention using an ecosystem centric approach when multiple scenarios of cultivation are possible. • Potential of rainwater harvesting for sustainable water management is investigated. • Optimum utilization and economic feasibility of farm reservoir are tested. • A novel simulation-optimization model is developed using cascade of tools. • Model is demonstrated using a real case study of resource constrained farm system. • Reservoir sizes in specific range produces at least 2.5 times benefit to cost ratio. There have been claims of early use of high-carbon steel in South India. Still, the antiquity, elemental composition and steelmaking process have not been explored adequately. The high carbon steel was known in the Iron Age or early historical period. However, the large-scale use of such steel was prevalent only in the medieval times. This article examines the presence of steel and its metallographic features in the iron artifacts retrieved from two archaeological sites, namely Ambal and Vallam, Tamil Nadu, India, with occupational evidence from the Iron Age to the medieval period through a number of scientific tests. Metallographic as well as mechanical tests were performed to identify the morphology and measure the strength respectively. Similarly, the chemical composition was determined to quantify the alloying elements in the material. The slag was exposed on the etched surface of the sample cut from axe. Microscopy and chemical composition analysis showed very fine bright dendrites of wüstite in the iron slag. The deterioration of samples was confirmed in microscopic and composition analysis. The result shows that the inhabitants of ancient Ambal and the Vallam were equipped with iron smelting technology and had the knowledge of steelmaking in the Iron Age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• A conceptual framework was designed for a bioenergy system for rural India. • Agro waste potential was estimated through survey. • Techno-economic analysis of an integrated system was conducted. • Uncertainty was assessed through Monte-Carlo simulation. This paper presents a holistic approach to promote bioenergy in India by designing a conceptual framework that combines resource, technology and market. The proposed concept is an attempt to integrate pelletization and gasification technology for bioenergy system development through an end-to-end approach. The potential of bioenergy resource (i.e. agro waste) was estimated based on survey. The study further assessed the economic feasibility of agro waste pelletization. The economic evaluation was made using indicators such as net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), discounted payback period (DPBP) etc. Pellet plant capacity of 0.5 ton h−1 showed acceptable economics and the NPV , IRR and DPBP were ₹9.35 million ($0.13 million), 41% and 2.8 years, respectively. Moreover, the larger capacity plants (>2 ton h−1) were subjected to more risk under low pellet prices (< ₹5 kg−1 or $71.4 ton−1). The cash flow statement showed a strong debt paying ability for the project. Pellet price was the most sensitive factor followed by annual operating days on pellet plant economics. Monte Carlo simulation predicted an average NPV of ₹9.3 ± 2.0 million ($133.2 ± 29.1 thousand). The economics of fuel pellets utilization in a gasifier for energy applications was also evaluated. The pellet fed gasifier system appeared to be cost competitive with commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and wood at a pellet price range of ₹6.3–8.8 kg−1 ($90–126 ton−1) in a select scenario. Overall, the designed framework appears to reduce over-dependency on wood or fossil sources, and facilitate bioenergy promotion in rural areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Tuberculosis is an important public health problem among infectious diseases. The problem becomes more concerning with the emergence of MDR-TB and pre-XDR-TB. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) detection of resistance has recently gained popularity as it has advantages over other commercial techniques., Methods: We performed in-house WGS followed by detailed analysis by an in-house pipeline to identify the resistance markers. This was accompanied by Phenotypic DST, and Sanger sequencing on all the 12 XDR, 06 pre-XDR, and 06 susceptible M. tb isolates. These results were collated with online M. tb WGS pipelines (TB profiler, PhyResSE, Mykrobe predictor) for comparative analysis., Results: Following our in-house analysis, we observed 64 non-synonymous SNPs, fifteen synonymous SNPs, and five INDELs in 25 drug resistance-associated genes/intergenic regions (IGRs) in M. tb isolates. Sensitivity for detecting XDR is 33%, 58%, 83%, and 83%, respectively, using Mykrobe predictor, PhyResSE, TB-profiler, and in-house pipeline for WGS analysis, respectively. TB-profiler detected a rare mutation H70R in the gyrA gene in one pre-XDR isolate. Lineage 2.2.1 East-Asian (Beijing sublineage type) predominated (60%) in WGS data analysis of the XDR isolates., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that in-house analysis of WGS data and TB-profiler sensitivity was better for the detection of second-line resistance as compared to other automated tested tools.
