Background: Communication difficulties in aphasia can result in social isolation, challenges with interpersonal relationships, emotional changes, inability to return to work, and lack of independence. Therefore, intervention is essential particularly in the context of functional communication for persons with aphasia (PwAs). Studies have also indicated that quality of communication life (QoCL) is a valid measure of the impact of communication difficulty on quality of life.Objective: To estimate the relationship between communication intervention and QoCL in individuals with expressive aphasia.Methods and Material: Twenty PwAs were divided into two groups: group I individuals had undergone at least 3 months of speech and language intervention whereas group II individuals did not have any formal communication intervention. Tamil version of the QoCL scale was administered for all participants. Statistical analysis was carried out using Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman's rho correlation coefficient.Results: Individuals with speech and language intervention in group I had higher scores in overall QoCL domains as well as in overall QoL when compared to group II. The results of correlation analysis indicated that individuals with greater therapy duration had significantly high scores.Conclusions: The results prove that communication intervention is necessary for PwAs to improve QoCL and can be used to raise awareness of its importance. The findings can also guide treatment planning, counseling the PwA, and caregivers. It also indicates the importance of using patient-related outcome measures during the intervention process. COVID-19 is more virulent and challenging to human life. In India, the Ministry of AYUSH recommended some strategies through Siddha, homeopathy, and other methods to effectively manage COVID-19 (Guidelines for AYUSH Clinical Studies in COVID-19, 2020). Kabasura Kudineer and homeopathy medicines are in use for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 infection; however, the mechanism of action is less explored. This study aims to understand the antagonist activity of natural compounds found in Kabasura Kudineer and homeopathy medicines against the SARS-CoV-2 using computational methods. Potential compounds were screened against NSP-12, NSP-13, NSP-14, NSP-15, main protease, and spike proteins. Structure-based virtual screening results shows that, out of 14,682 Kabasura Kudineer compounds, the 250395, 129677029, 44259583, 44259584, and 88583189 compounds and, out of 3,112 homeopathy compounds, the 3802778, 320361, 5315832, 14590080, and 74029795 compounds have good scoring function against the SARS-CoV-2 structural and nonstructural proteins. As a result of docking, homeopathy compounds have a docking score ranging from −5.636 to 13.631 kcal/mol, while Kabasura Kudineer compounds have a docking score varying from −8.290 to −13.759 kcal/mol. It has been found that the selected compounds bind well to the active site of SARS-CoV-2 proteins and form hydrogen bonds. The molecular dynamics simulation study shows that the selected compounds have maintained stable conformation in the simulation period and interact with the target. This study supports the antagonist activity of natural compounds from Kabasura Kudineer and homeopathy against SARS-CoV-2's structural and nonstructural proteins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: India has seen rapid unorganized urbanization in the past few decades. However, the burden of childhood diseases and malnutrition in such populations is difficult to quantify. The morbidity experience of children living in semi-urban slums of a southern Indian city is described. Methods: A total of 176 children were recruited pre-weaning from four geographically adjacent, semi-urban slums located in the western outskirts of Vellore, Tamil Nadu for a study on water safety and enteric infections and received either bottled or municipal drinking water based on their area of residence. Children were visited weekly at home and had anthropometry measured monthly until their second birthday. Results: A total of 3932 episodes of illness were recorded during the follow-up period, resulting in an incidence of 12.5 illnesses/child-year, with more illness during infancy than in the second year of life. Respiratory, mostly upper respiratory infections, and gastrointestinal illnesses were most common. Approximately one-third of children were stunted at two years of age, and two-thirds had at least one episode of growth failure during the two years of follow up. No differences in morbidity were seen between children who received bottled and municipal water. Conclusions: Our study found a high burden of childhood diseases and malnutrition among urban slum dwellers in southern India. Frequent illnesses may adversely impact children's health and development, besides placing an additional burden on families who need to seek healthcare and find resources to manage illness. The global prevalence of diabetes mellitus is rising, especially in India. Medicinal herbs, whether used alone or in combination with conventional medicines, have shown promise in managing diabetes and improving overall well-being. Piperine (PIP), a major bioactive compound found in pepper, is gaining attention for its beneficial properties. This study aimed to assess whether PIP could alleviate diabetes by targeting insulin pathway-related molecules in the adipose tissue of rats on a high-fat diet (HFD). After 60 days on the HFD, rats received PIP at a dose of 40 mg/kg body weight for one month. The results showed that PIP significantly improved metabolic indicators, antioxidant enzymes, and carbohydrate metabolic enzymes. It also regulated the mRNA and protein expression of insulin signaling, which had been disrupted by the diet and sucrose intake. Molecular docking analysis also revealed strong binding of PIP to key diabetes-related regulatory proteins, including Akt (−6.2 kcal/mol), IR (−7.02 kcal/mol), IRS-1 (−6.86 kcal/mol), GLUT4 (−6.24 kcal/mol), AS160 (−6.28 kcal/mol), and β-arrestin (−6.01 kcal/mol). Hence, PIP may influence the regulation of glucose metabolism through effective interactions with these proteins, thereby controlling blood sugar levels due to its potent antilipidemic and antioxidant properties. In conclusion, our study provides in vivo experimental evidence against the HFD-induced T2DM model for the first time, making PIP a potential natural remedy to enhance the quality of life for diabetic patients and aid in their management. • PIP enhances insulin and glucose tolerance in rats on HFD. • PIP increases IR/Akt/GLUT4 signaling, boosting insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake. • Computational data indicate PIP interacts with IR/Akt/GLUT4 signaling molecules, potentially amplifying their activity. • PIP holds potential as a natural remedy for IR and associated metabolic disorders.
