Background: Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type-9 (PCSK-9) is a serine protease with profound effects on plasma LDL-C, the major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, plasma PCSK-9 level and its association with the biomarkers of CVDs, diabetes, and associated complications have not yet been reported in the northeastern population of India. Methods: Of the total cohort (n = 233), we analyzed healthy controls (HC; n = 50), freshly diagnosed type-2-diabetes mellitus (T2DM-FD; n = 46), T2DM treated (T2DM-T; n = 49), diabetic nephropathy (T2DM-N; n = 43), and diabetic dyslipidemia (T2DM-DL; n = 45) subjects. Plasma PCSK-9 and other biological determinants associated with T2DM, CVD, and nephrotic dysfunction were assessed. Results: The level of plasma PCSK-9 in HC, T2DM-FD, T2DM-T, T2DM-N, and T2DM-DL groups was found to be 184.1 ± 13.83, 183.1 ± 24.4.3, 241.8 ± 75.42, 403.7 ± 85.94, and 641.3 ± 135.5 ng/mL, respectively, indicating its role in the severity of the here-mentioned complications. Moreover, plasma PCSK-9 levels further showed a significant correlation with the biomarkers of hyperglycemia, particularly HbA1c, as well as LDL-C in T2DM-FD, T2DM-N, and T2DM-DL subjects of the Indian population, while moderate association in T2DM-T subjects. Conclusions: Our first-of-its-kind clinical study aiming to quantify the circulatory PCSK-9 level in the Indian population concluded that elevated PCSK-9 was significantly associated with the severity of diabetes and associated complications. Moreover, such elevation in PCSK-9 might be attributed to the lipid- and glucose-lowering medication-induced SREBP-2-dependent mechanisms. Since our conclusion is based on a pilot study, further cohort studies in larger populations of India are required to get a generalization regarding the role of PCSK-9 in DM and associated complications. Inland saline water (ISW)-based Penaeus vannamei aquaculture system is an emerging field of fisheries, which came as a magic capsule to boost the overall agri-cum-aquacultural economy of many countries including India. The standardized technology for ISW-based P. vannamei culture includes ameliorating the culture water with K+-ion supplementation and amending Ca++/Mg++ ratio to 1:2–3, so as to simulate the natural seawater (NSW) equivalence, and replicating the NSW-culture parameters in the ISW system. However, for sustained growth and enhanced profitability, there was a need for formulation of ISW-specific culture parameters. In view of this, the present study was undertaken wherein P. vannamei seeds (post-larvae 8) were experimentally reared in ISW ponds with three different stocking densities (30, 45 and 60 PL8/m2) for a period of 75 and 110 days across two culture seasons followed by evaluation of growth and economic performances. Our study revealed highest mean weight (21.21–28.10 g), specific growth rate (8.75–6.22%) and survival percentage (92.93–90.34%) and lowest feed-conversion ratio (1.14–1.21) in the 30/m2 stocking group over the two respective seasons. The lower stocking density group also displayed maximum economic viability, recording benefit–cost ratio of 2.01 and net profit of 2.73 USD/Kg at 110 days. Further, in terms of profit sensitivity it ensures comfortable margins at any uncertain inflationary/deflationary scenarios. Thus, it can be inferred that at 30/m2 stocking density, the ISW-based P. vannamei culture can become a financially viable and sustainable aqua-venture for aspirant farmers, which have the potential to transform salt-degraded wasteland into profit-making asset. The past few decades have seen significant changes in the governance of forests in India. The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Rights on Forest) Act (FRA), 2006, was a landmark act passed in the Indian Parliament to assign individual property rights over forest resources that have been de facto used by local communities. This paper examines whether the assignment of individual property rights results in positive outcomes for forest conservation using village-level forest patta (forest land title) and census data from Bankura district in West Bengal. Vegetation Continuous Fields data has been used to measure the change in forest cover from 2006 to 2012. The results show that the percentage of forest patta land in the village, distance to markets, the existence of pucca roads, and the presence of forest protection committees (FPCs) are negatively and significantly related to forest degradation, implying improvement in forest conservation outcomes. The presence of tribal people, a larger population, and higher literacy rate are positively associated with forest degradation, meaning that they have an undesirable impact on forest conservation outcomes. The findings of this study strongly suggest that the assignment of individual property rights to both the Scheduled Tribes (STs) living in the forest and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (OTFDs) under the FRA, 2006, tends to improve forest conservation outcomes. All the cultivated Brassica species exhibited powdery mildew severity with highest (43.2%) on Brassica juncea followed by B. rapa (28.0%) which is widely cultivated in India. Yield losses from 10-90 per cent with reduction in 6.47 per cent oil content have been estimated from different Brassica species. Hence, the present study was carried out to evaluate different oils to manage powdery mildew disease and aphids in an organically grown mustard crop. Five oils (castor, groundnut, sunflower, neem and mustard oil) and ghee were evaluated against powdery mildew (Erysiphae cruciferarum) and aphid (Lipaphis erysimi) of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea). Castor oil 50 EC, neem oil 50 EC and mustard oil 50 EC and deshi ghee 50 EC (@ 100 ml/10 litre water) were effective over untreated control in reducing powdery mildew disease severity when applied as foliar spray (@ 5 ml/ litre) in the experiment carried out in organic field (plot No. B-2 at Agronomy Instruction Farm, S. D. Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar). Maximum reduction in germinated conidia (66.0%) over control, disease severity (50.0%), area under disease progress curve (AUDPC) values (51.8%) and maximum increase over control in 1000 seed weight (16.7%) and seed yield (10.3%) was observed with neem oil. This was followed by the application of ghee which exhibited reduced disease severity (22.9%) and AUDPC values (30.6%) and increased seed yield (8.1%) and the application of castor oil 50 EC which exhibited an increased in seed yield (8.0%) and reduced powdery mildew severity (20.8%). Shortest log phase was observed with neem oil during 10th std. week. All the oils tested (castor, groundnut, sunflower, neem and mustard oil) and deshi ghee were effective in reducing aphid population (39.5 to 65.9%) and damage index (6.1 to 25.1%). A maximum reduction in aphid population (65.9%) over control and lowest aphid damage index (3.70) was observed with neem oil 50 EC 6 days after 2nd spray. Application of neem oil, castor oil and deshi ghee resulted in increased seed yield (8.1 to 10.4%). Effluent from electroplating industries contains various toxic heavy metal ions such as chromium, nickel, lead, cadmium, copper and zinc. Recovery of the valuable heavy metals by environment friendly approach for recycling in various useful applications could be significant from the perspectives of clean process development with techno-economic viability. Zinc is an important component of electroplating effluent found in high concentration (80–750 mg/L). The present study investigates on recovery of zinc from electroplating effluent using an efficient biochar synthesized from jute industrial wastes. Biochar characteristics and metal removal mechanisms were established using BET surface area, zeta potential, FESEM-EDAX, elemental mapping, XRD, FTIR, XPS, XRF, Raman spectroscopy and roles played by functional groups. Optimum adsorption capacity of 526.32 mg g−1 was obtained for Zn(II). Zn(II) binding was achieved by ion exchange, complexation with functional groups, electrostatic interactions, adsorption and micro-precipitation. The techno-economic analysis was performed for biochar prepared by chemical carbonization process and found competitive in comparison with other reported biochar obtained by slow pyrolysis process. Further, the disposal of the toxic metal-laden spent adsorbent is a critical issue that needs to be addressed. In the present study recycling potential of the exhausted Zn(II)-laden biochar was explored for the development of micro-fertilizer for plants and soil-fertility improvement. Application of the Zn(II)-laden biochar mixed with soil revealed a positive influence on Cicer arietinum seed germination, plant growth parameters, protein and chlorophyll a and b content. Significantly, there were no changes in the antioxidant enzymes activities, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) between the plants grown in control soil and different Zn(II)-laden biochar-mixed soil, suggesting that 15% of the Zn(II)-laden biochar could not be excess condition of zinc. The present study thus addresses an important aspect of solid waste management of jute industry considering significant volume of jute waste production of ~ 0.04 MT/day in India along with the remediation of electroplating and other metal-bearing industrial effluent. Further, micro-fertilizer application of the metal-laden sludge and soil productivity improvement at low cost, environmentally safe and fruitful manner makes the study significant from ecological as well as societal perspectives. Studying granitoids can provide important knowledge on the composition of continental crust and the geodynamic processes of continental growth. Nevertheless, the mechanisms of granitoids formation during continental collision remain uncertain. In this paper, we present new zircon U–Pb–Hf isotope and whole‐rock Sr–Nd isotope compositions, and major‐ and trace‐element data for granitoids from the Chacangka area of the central Lhasa Terrane, southern Tibet. The Chacangka quartz monzonites crystallized at ca. 61 Ma, whereas the monzonites and granites were emplaced at ca. 51 Ma. The quartz monzonites are peraluminous and have high 87Sr/86Sri ratios (0.7129–0.7131), and their low εNd(t) (−7.65 to −7.10) and zircon εHf(t) (−9.3 to −7.5) values are more depleted than those of ancient crustal basement beneath the central Lhasa Terrane, which suggests that they originated from a mixed source of juvenile and ancient lower crust. Compared with the quartz monzonites, the monzonites have much higher contents of MgO (2.34–3.62 wt%) and values of Mg# (42.3–46.3) and zircon εHf(t) (−6.9 to 1.9) and show more depleted Sr–Nd isotopes, indicating that more juvenile materials were involved in their source. The granites have Sr–Nd isotope compositions that are similar to those of the coeval monzonites but have higher SiO2 contents, lower CaO and MgO contents, and lower values of Mg#, suggesting that they were differentiates of the monzonites. The elemental and isotopic compositions of the Chacangka granitoids exhibit a marked transformation from 61 to 51 Ma, probably indicating breakoff of the Neo‐Tethyan oceanic slab. The Neo‐Tethyan slab breakoff not only induced the upwelling of deep material and eruption of magma but also caused re‐melting and destruction of ancient crustal basement of the central Lhasa Terrane. System of rice intensification (SRI) has been gaining momentum over the years in Tripura, one of the eastern states of India. To meet the growing rice demand, a rapid increase in paddy production is needed. Considering the growing importance of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in the state, the need for such a study was felt and accordingly the present study was conducted in Sepahijala district of Tripura on the basis of highest area coverage under SRI among all districts of the State. SRI offers an interesting alternative to improve rice productivity. The present study was carried out to examine the comparative economics of SRI and conventional methods of rice cultivation in Tripura, India during the year 2016-17. For the study 120 sample farmers were selected by using multistage random sampling. The cost concepts were used are Cost A, Cost B and Cost C. This paper has compared the economics of SRI and the conventional methods of rice cultivation. It has shown that gross return and net return were much higher for SRI (Rs. 129000.50), (Rs. 67050.50) than conventional (Rs. 78444.00), (Rs. 27168.00), respectively. Similarly, the return over cost was higher for SRI (2.08) than conventional (1.52) methods. The present study concludes that SRI has a tremendous potential to increase the production of rice. Moreover, adoption of this technique by the farmers would give them higher yields which in turn will help them to earn more and improve their socio-economic situation. In this paper, firstly, an extensive empirical investigation is done by fitting linear regressions exhaustively to observe the pattern and nature of linear relationships of life expectancies of each age-group with that of all other age-groups in fifty-four Sample Registration System (SRS) life tables of Assam state of India. Secondly, two second degree polynomial regression models have been proposed for estimating life expectancies at birth (e0). Both the models have been empirically illustrated in fifty-four SRS life tables of India and fifty-four SRS life tables of each of 16 major Indian states. The estimated values of e0 are examined in relation to estimated values of the same by some other methods and e0 values available in SRS tables of the years 2001-05 and 2011-15. Moreover, e0 values for all districts of Assam are estimated by using one of the proposed polynomial regressions together with some indirect techniques of estimation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new isolate of Streptomyces sp. from soil of state Chhattisgarh (India) having broad spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activity was obtained. The active strain was identified as Streptomyces rimosus subsp. rimosus with accession number MTCC 10792 based on physiological, biochemical characteristics and 16S rRNA sequence homology studies. Antimicrobial compound produced by S. rimosus was tested against the drug resistance pathogens by the Bauer and Kirby method. The crude active metabolite was extracted using solvent n-butanol and purified by silica column chromatography and HPLC method. The physicochemical characteristics of the one purified compound viz. color, melting point, solubility, elemental analysis, ESIMS, IR, UV, 1HNMR, CNMR and chemical reactions have been investigated. Purified antimicrobial compound produced by S. rimosus MTCC 10792 at concentration 25 μg/mL showed antitubercular activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv, Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37R as well as broad activity against all tested bacterial and fungal pathogens.
