The aim of the present research was to investigate the seasonal impact on nearshore beach dynamics and the status of heavy mineral distribution along central Tamil Nadu coast, India. Beach profile measurements were made in 10 profiling sites between Thirukadaiyur and Velankanni on monthly and seasonal basis from January 2011 to July 2012. Using beach profile data, variation in beach width, slope and volumetric changes have been calculated. Beach slope and nearshore wave parameters were used to quantify the longshore sediment transport rate. Beaches between Thirukadaiyur and Karaikkal attained predominant transport rate in northern direction whereas, the rest of the beaches are in southern direction. The seasonal action of wind and wave currents create nearshore bar during northeast (NE) monsoon and frequent berms at tidal zone during southwest (SW) monsoon. Surface sediment samples were collected in each location for quantifying the heavy mineral weight percentage during the period of pre- and post-Thane cyclone. Sediments were also studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to evaluate the changes and occurrence of heavy minerals in beach sands. The XRD results show that sediments in the study area have enriched heavy mineral distribution even after strong cyclonic event. It confirms the redistribution of heavy mineral deposits present in the coast. The littoral drift regime along the northeastern coast of India was investigated by analyzing coastal drift indicators and shoreline changes based on multitemporal satellite images. The study of offshore turbidity patterns and quantitative estimation of suspended sediments was undertaken to understand the magnitude and direction of movement of sediment fluxes. The study revealed that: (1) the character of coastal landforms and sedimentation processes indicate that the sediment transport is bidirectional and monsoon dependent; (2) multidate, multitemporal analysis of satellite images helps to show the nature of sediment transport along the coast. The dominant net sediment transport is in a NE direction along the eastern coast of India. Finally, this assessment demonstrates the potential of remote sensing technology in understanding the coastal morphometric changes, long-term sediment transport, shoreline changes, and offshore turbidity distribution pattern and the implications for the transport of sediment-associated pollutants. Abstract: Indian River Inlet is located at roughly the mid-point of the Atlantic coast of Delaware and connects the ocean to two Delaware inland bays. Jetties constructed in 1940 have maintained the inlet for navigation purposes but have also acted as a barrier to net northerly alongshore sediment transport causing downdrift erosion. A mobile, land-based bypassing system was initiated in 1990 in an effort to counteract this erosion. Beach profile data from 1985 (pre-bypassing) until 2008 are used to investigate the effect of the sand bypassing system on beaches adjacent to the inlet. The downdrift beach experienced horizontal shoreline erosion between 10 and 60m during the pre-bypassing period but accreted 10–20m during the bypassing period. The mean shoreline location on the updrift beach during bypassing is 10–20m landward (erosion) of its position during the pre-bypassing period. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) amplitudes from analyses performed on mean-removed elevation surfaces during the periods of highest bypassed volume (average of 83% of design rate) showed that the influence of the bypassing system on the downdrift beach extends to about 1500m of the inlet. An EOF analysis showed that different morphologic responses were evident following the initiation of bypass operations. Temporal variations of shoreline and beach morphology were correlated to the temporal variations in bypassing rates on the downdrift beach only. The downdrift beach response was greatest near the inlet for larger bypassing volumes. Correlation in these instances occurred with a roughly 1-year time lag suggesting that the beach quickly redistributes the bypassed sand. EOF amplitude and shoreline response are weakly correlated to bypassed volumes when the system bypassed smaller volumes (average of 56% of design rate) of sand suggesting that there is a minimum bypassing rate, regardless of yearly variability, below which the effect on the downdrift beach is obscured. Abstract: An approach to deriving the transfer time of sediments within alluvial plains by using the variation of the U-series nuclides in sediments collected along rivers is presented in this article and discussed in the light of new data from samples from different locations within the Ganges watershed and its outlet. These data indicate that the upstream-downstream variation of 238U-234U-230Th disequilibria in the sediments, with different variation trends for suspended and coarse-grained sediments, is probably a general feature of all Himalayan rivers flowing across the Indo-Gangetic plain. The data therefore confirm the occurrence of very different transfer times within the plain, depending on the sediments granulometry, with much shorter transfer time for the fine-grained (a few ky or less) than for the coarse-grained sediments (100 ky or more). A new solving approach, using a parallel stochastic Quantum-behaved Particle Swarm Optimization (p-QPSO), has been developed for identifying the unknown parameters of the model necessary for the determination of the transfer time. The data of sediments collected at the Ganges outlet show significant variations of the 234U/230Th activity ratios for the fine-grained sediment end-member collected in 2004 and 2008. Such variations indicate that the fine-grained sediments transit quickly (a year or less) within the plain. The highly variable activity ratios might be the result of quickly changing weathering intensities. Conversely, the U-Th variations observed for the 2004 and 2008 bedload from the Ganges basin cannot result from a short sedimentary transfer time. They probably result from the dredge sampling procedure, which might be influenced by local placer effects controlling the abundance of U and Th carrying minerals. Dredging may not allow the sampling of a representative bedload, hence it may cause an artificial mineralogical and, therefore, an U-Th variability for bedload sediments collected at different periods. Suspended sediment transport in the Gulf of Kachchh is simulated utilizing the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) derived from Oceansat OCM imagery, as the initial condition in MIKE-21 Mud Transport model. Optimization of the model mud parameters, like settling velocity and critical shear stress for erosion are realized with respect to the sediment size distribution and the bottom bed materials observed in the Gulf. Simulated SSCs are compared with alternate OCM derived SSC. The results are observed to be impetus where the model is able to generate the spatial dynamics of the sediment concentrations. Sediment dynamics like deposition, erosion and dispersion are explained with the simulated tidal currents and OCM derived sediment concentrations. Tidal range is observed as the important physical factor controlling the deposition and resuspension of sediments within the Gulf. From the simulation studies; maximum residual current velocities, tidal fronts and high turbulent zones are found to characterise the islands and shoals within the Gulf, which results in high sediment concentrations in those regions. Remarkable variability in the bathymetry of the Gulf, different bed materials and varying tidal conditions induces several circulation patterns and turbulence creating the unique suspended sediment concentration pattern in the Gulf. Indian Remote Sensing-P4 (IRS P4) Ocean Color Monitor (OCM) data is used to understand seasonal variations in suspended sediment (SS) dispersal pattern in the near-shore waters of the Central West Coast of India. Four distinct patterns of sediment dispersion are observed. (1) During monsoon, plume-like sediment dispersion seaward is observed especially in the mouths of rivers. (2) As the monsoon progresses, there is northerly transport of sediments with anticlockwise pattern within the plumes. (3) During NE monsoon, sediment concentration is less and its transport is southward. (4) During premonsoon, SS concentration is high in the near-shore water and transport is landward. Sequential OCM data analyses indicated the influence of tidal currents, especially during premonsoon in the vicinity of the river mouths on sediments dispersion. During rising tide, sediments move into the estuary, and during falling tide they flow seaward resulting in erosion and formation of shoals. Sediment-dispersal patterns largely follow wind and wave patterns, a characteristic feature of the mesotidal coast. Spit growth is observed across many rivers of the central west coast of India. Studies on the seasonal dynamics of the spits of the central west coast of India on the basis of the multidate satellite images LISS III, landsatTM data, panchromatic camera (PAN) data etc. in a geographic information system (GIS) environment using ERDAS imagine 9.0 version followed by field-check and wave data analysis have been discussed in this paper. All types of spits such as paired spits, winglike spits, single spits, etc. are observed along the coast of Karnataka, central west coast of India. Spit growth is responsible not only for shifting of the river mouths, but also for rapid changes in estuarine morphology and in turn on the sedimentation process. It is observed that river mouths with a spit across them have a submerged bar in front of them, whereas rivers devoid of spits are also devoid of submerged bars in front of them. This spatial association of spit and submerged bar is believed to have a genetic relationship. Along the coast many perpendicular faults and uplifts have been observed. Rate of spit growth, along with their direction and inland drainage pattern, suggest a role of sea-level changes and tectonic control in addition to alongshore currents. Rapid spit growth is observed near the inferred tectonic axis. Abstract: Variations in erosion were quantified across the topographically and morphometrically asymmetrical central Ladakh Range in NW India to elucidate erosion and sediment transfer processes across space and time and to gain insight into how mountains erode and evolve. Morphometric analysis and 10Be cosmogenic nuclide analysis of 14 fluvial sediment samples from active channels in six catchments conducted across the mountain range constrains 100ka timescale erosion rates for catchments on the northern side of the mountain range and are between 56±12 and 74±11m/Ma, while catchments on the southern side of the mountain range to between 20±3 and 39±8m/Ma for the last ~300ka. Maximum elevation from swath analysis across the range shows a strong correlation with the ELAs of 382 contemporary glaciers. The higher erosion rate to the north likely relates to tectonic tilting of the central Ladakh Range and to active rock uplift on the northern side of the range along the Karakoram Fault. Morphometric analysis shows that the maximum and average elevations increase at nearly the same rate on a catchment-scale across the central Ladakh Range, with higher elevation on the northern side. This suggests that greater erosion on the northern side of the range is not keeping pace with rock uplift. Abstract: The distribution of grain size parameters along 11 km stretch of the beach sediments between Karikal and Nagore, reveals that the mean grain size exhibits a marked decreasing trend on either side of the mouth of the Tirumalairajanar River which flow from west to east. The sediments are mainly of medium to coarse grained, moderately sorted, near-symmetrical skewed to fine skewed and leptokurtic to mesokurtic in nature. Interrelationship of various parameters shows bimodal nature of sediments having dominance of medium to coarse sand. The major part of the sediment fall in a coarse to fine grained category (sand and silt). Based on the CM (Coarser one percentile value in micron) pattern, the sediment fall in rolling and suspension field. These factors includes the sediments discharged from the river mixes with offshore sediments and with the sediments eroded from a source rock. The effect of wave sorting, and the northward drifting of sediments by littoral current are understandable. Results indicate that the Tirumalairajanar River is the most important source for modern sediments in the study area. The agitation by waves is an important sorting mechanism in the study area, and the net sediment transport in the study area is northward. The findings are based on the grain sizes and also corroborated by short-term observations of the beach sediment dynamics and transport during the monsoon and summer seasons between Karaikal and Nagore region. Abstract: The coastline of Kannyakumari (8°4′N 77°33′E to 8°13′N 77°14′E), along the Arabian Sea is located near the southern tip of the Indian peninsula. This coast experiences heavy erosion particularly during the seasonal monsoons. This in turn results in considerable damage to properties, economic loss and leads to a number of socio economic problems. Protection measures in the form of groins have been implemented at selected locations along the coast. Prediction of shoreline oscillation due to the presence of such structures is extremely important prior to their construction. Although several formulae are available in the literature for the prediction of long shore sediment transport, studies regarding their application and validation with field problems along this coast are scanty. In the present work, seasonal measurements of shoreline oscillation adjacent to the shore connected structures were carried out during the year 2007 for which satellite data have also been adopted. These measurements are adopted to validate a finite difference based numerical model based on the formulation of for the prediction of shoreline evolution in the presence of shore connected structures. The offshore wave climate for the year 2007 is simulated from National Centre for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) wind data using Wave Analysis Model (WAM) model, whereas, the near shore wave climate was derived by adopting MIKE21 Parabolic Mild Slope (PMS) module The alongshore sediment transport is calculated using the approach of . Abstract: We present new major and trace element data, together with U–Pb ages for zircon sand grains from the major tributaries of the Indus River, as well as the adjacent Ghaggar and Yamuna Rivers and from bedrocks within the Sutlej Valley, in order to constrain the origin of the sediment reaching the Arabian Sea. Zircon grains from the upper Indus are generally younger than 200Ma and contrast with those from the eastern tributaries eroded from Himalayan sources. Grains younger than 15Ma, which typify the Nanga Parbat Massif, comprise no more than 1–2% of the total, even in the upper Indus, showing that this terrain is not a major sediment producer, in contrast with the Namche Barwe Massif in the eastern Himalayan syntaxis. The Sutlej and Yamuna Rivers in particular are very rich in Lesser Himalayan-derived 1500–2300Ma zircons, while the Chenab is dominated by 750–1250Ma zircons, mostly eroded from the Greater Himalaya. The upper Indus, Chenab and Ravi yield zircon populations broadly consistent with the outcrop areas, but the Jhelum and the Sutlej contain many more 1500–2300Ma zircons than would be predicted from the area of Lesser Himalayan rock within their drainages. A significant population of grains younger than 200Ma in the sands of the Thar Desert indicates preferential eolian, monsoon-related transport from the Indus lower reaches, rather than reworking from the local rivers. Modelling of observed zircon ages close to the delta contrasts with modern water discharge. The delta is rich in zircons dating 1500–2300Ma, while discharge from modern rivers carrying such grains is low. The modest size of the Sutlej, the richest source of these materials in the modern system, raises the possibility that the compositionally similar Yamuna used to flow westwards in the recent past. Our data indicate a non-steady state river with zircon transport times of 5–10k.y. inferred from earlier zircon dating of delta sands. The modern delta zircons image an earlier, likely Early-Mid Holocene, erosional state, in which the Lesser Himalaya were more important as sediment suppliers. Early-Mid Holocene sands show much less erosion from the Karakoram–Transhimalaya compared to those deposited at the Last Glacial Maximum, or calculated from the modern discharge. Abstract: Suspended particulate matter (SPM) collected at regular stations from the Mandovi and Zuari estuaries indicates that the peaks of high SPM coincide with peaks of high rainfall and low salinity and also with peaks of moderate/low rainfall coupled with high salinity during the monsoon. The estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) is a characteristic feature, it occurs in the channel accompanying spring tide during the monsoon and pre-monsoon, and shifts to the bay on neap tide during post-monsoon. ETM remains at the same position in the Mandovi River, both during the monsoon and pre-monsoon, whereas in Zuari it stretched upstream during monsoon and migrates seaward of the channel during pre-monsoon. The ETM coincides with the freshwater–seawater interface during the monsoon and is formed by the interaction between tidal currents and river flows. The ETM during pre-monsoon is associated with high salinities and is generated by tidal and wind-induced currents. The turbidity maximum on neap tide during post-monsoon may be due to the erosion and resuspension of sediments from the emergent tidal flats and transport of these turbid waters into the bay. Funneling effect of the narrowing bay in the Zuari estuary and associated physical processes effectively enhance the magnitude of the currents and transports sediments to the channel. In order to have an understanding of the coastal processes along the southwest coast of India (8u49 N, 77u 339 E to 8u139 N, 77u149 E), a data set available for the changes in beach width for a period of 5 years (1993-1998) over a length of about 50 km was categorized and analysed in relation to the seasons. Since the study area is densely populated and was also affected partially by the great Indian Ocean tsunami, a freshmeasurement campaign of beach profile changes up to a water depth of 6 m at four different locations along the coast was carried out. These measurements have been adopted to validate a finite difference-based numerical model that employs the empirical formulation of Larson and Kraus (1989) for the prediction of beach profile changes. We simulated the offshore wave climate from National Centre for Environmental Prediction wind data using the Wave AnalysisModel (WAM), whereas the nearshore wave climate was derived by adopting theMIKE21 ParabolicMild Slope module. Results compared well with each other. The prediction from the numerical model revealed that the average onshore-offshore transport varies from about 50 to 200 m3 y21m21 width of the beach. Due to an increase in deforestation and construction activities in the Himalayan region, there is an increase in sediment laden flow in many rivers, such as the Ganges, which originate from the Himalayan region. Many cities, located along these rivers, withdraw river water through abstraction wells located close to river banks and it is of growing interest to know how the sediment load increase in the source water may affect the turbidity, also a measure of sediment load, in the abstracted water. With this in mind, a study has been carried out to assess the variation of turbidity in the source water and the abstracted water at a river bank filtration site in Haridwar, located on the bank of the River Ganges and at the foothills of the Himalayas, for the period 2005-2006. It is found that the turbidity removal coefficient varies with the natural logarithm of influent concentration of the source water. A theoretical development, based on the use of the Sakthivadivel and Einstein model, is also provided to justify the removal coefficient's logarithmic variation with the influent concentration. Abstract: Rivers are known to carry sediment loads. Many rivers in Asia including Kosi, Brahmaputra, Bagmati rivers in India and Yellow and Yarlung Tsangpo rivers in China are well known for their carriage of excessive sediment loads. In India, many water abstraction units are located along river banks. Their success depends on how the sediment load is trapped as the sediment laden water flows towards the pumping wells located few hundred meters away from river bank. In this work, based on the analysis of a data of one year on suspended load variations in a canal, located at Haridwar, India, trap efficiency variations are studied during the passage of source water to the abstraction well. Considering the subsurface basin, located within the source water and the abstraction well, as a hypothetical settling basin, variation of trap efficiency is related with the influent concentration. It is observed that the trap efficiency depends on the influent concentration. Appropriate functional forms for the variation of trap efficiency with the influent concentrations are also identified. Textural analysis is the epicenter of any sedimentological research. Granulometric analyses of unconsolidated sediments are used as an index to decipher the depositional environment. The granulometric analysis display a significant fluctuation in mean size, sorting, skewness, and kurtosis due to the variation in wave energy and the extent of turbulence affecting the beach environment during the crosshore and alongshore movement of sediments. The present study is to document the variation in grain size distribution within foreshore sediments, i.e., between the high water line and the plunge point wherein the sediments are deposited under different wave energy conditions. We discuss geomorphic processes in the vicinity of river mouths of the central west coast of India using the Venkatapur River as a representative. Multidate satellite image analyses, wave-refraction patterns, time-series beach section studies, and sediment characteristics were used to understand the geomorphic processes operating in the region. Multidate image analyses indicated a significant readjustment of mouth configuration as well as shoal features; spit growth northward across the Venkatapur River and other rivers of the region, e.g., the Gangavali, the Sharavati; a shift of the river mouth northward; narrowing of the river mouths; and development of submerged bars across the river mouths, etc. The beaches to the north of the Venkatapur River mouth showed erosion (retreated landward), whereas the beaches on the southern side of the river mouth accreted (grew seaward/alongshore). In general, the beaches showed accretion during postmonsoon and premonsoon intervals, and erosion during monsoon. Sediments on the beach are medium to very fine grained (1.38-3.45 Ø) and moderately to poorly sorted (σ = 0.3-0.81), suggesting low-energy conditions during deposition. During the premonsoon period, resuspension of sediments occurs, and these sediments move landward and into the estuary, especially during high tide. Wave-refraction pattern shows wave divergence in the mouth of the river and wave convergence away from the river on either side during the premonsoon (March to May) period, leading to a wave shadow area in front of the river mouth. A Geographical Information System (GIS) based method is proposed and demonstrated for the identification of sediment source and sink areas and the prediction of sediment yield from watersheds. Data from the Haharo sub-catchment having an area of 565 km2 in the Upper Damodar Valley in Jharkhand State in India was taken up for the present study due to availability of gauged data at multiple locations within watershed area. The watershed was discretized into hydrologically homogeneous grid cells to capture the watershed heterogeneity. The cells thus formed were then differentiated into cells of overland flow regions and cells of channel flow regions based on the magnitude of their flow accumulation areas. The gross soil erosion in each cell was calculated using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). The parameters of the USLE were evaluated using digital elevation model, soil and landuse information on cell basis. The concept of transport limited sediment delivery (TLSD) was formulated and used in ArcGIS for generating the transport capacity maps. An empirical relation is proposed and demonstrated for its usefulness for computation of land vegetation dependent transport capacity factor used in TLSD approach by linking it with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) derived from satellite data. Using these maps, the gross soil erosion was routed to the watershed outlet using hydrological drainage paths, for derivation of transport capacity limited sediment outflow maps. These maps depict the amount of sediment rate from a particular grid in spatial domain and the pixel value of the outlet grid indicates the sediment yield at the outlet of the watershed. Abstract: The Ganga Basin, one of the world''s most densely populated and vulnerable regions, is also among the world''s most dynamic hydrological systems. Rivers exiting the Himalaya deposit massive amounts of sediment in the plains and shift their courses regularly. The natural dynamics of this system have a direct impact on populations. On August 18th, 2008, for example, embankments on the Kosi River (a tributary to the Ganges), failed and the channel shifted by as much as 120km (Sinha, 2008 [1]) displacing over sixty thousand people in Nepal and three and a half million in India. Transport and power systems disrupted across large areas. The embankment failure was not caused by an extreme event. Instead the breach represented a failure of interlinked physical and institutional infrastructure systems in an area characterized by complex social, political, and environmental relationships. Projected climate changes in the Ganga Basin are likely to greatly exacerbate vulnerability (Adaptation Study Team, 2008 [2]). While the Kosi breach had nothing to do with climate change, such events will increase if climatic variability, sediment transport, and extreme events increase. Understanding how populations can respond to the dynamic nature of rivers such as the Kosi is, as a result, essential to develop strategies for adapting to climatic change. Understanding is also essential at the policy level for building adaptive capacity. The challenge is to identify policy frameworks and their relationship to interlinked physical and institutional infrastructure combinations that create environments enabling adaptation within households, communities, and regions. This paper explores the challenges and opportunities facing the development of adaptive policy frameworks in the Ganga Basin. The characteristics of frameworks that are adaptive in themselves and enable adaptation along with their relationship to different types of interlinked institutional and infrastructure systems are explored first. Following this, the case of the Kosi embankment along with the projected impacts of climate change across the Ganga Basin is used to identify the key challenges and opportunities that are common in many regions. Abstract: 238U–234U–230Th radioactive disequilibria were analyzed in suspended sediments (collected at different depths) from the Ganges River and one of its main tributaries: the Narayani–Gandak River. Results associated with bedload sediment data suggest that uranium-series (U-series) disequilibria in river sediments of the Ganges basin vary with grain size and sampling location. The range of observed U-series disequilibria is explained by a mixing model between a coarse-grained sediment end-member, represented by bedload and bank sediments, and a fine-grained end-member that both originate from Himalaya but undergo different transfer histories within the plain. The coarse-grained sediment end-member transits slowly (i.e. >several 100’sky) in the plain whereas the fine-grained sediment end-member is transferred much faster (<20–25ky), as indicated by the absence of significant variations in Th isotope composition of the fine-grained sediment end-members. These results show that U-series isotopes can be used to quantify the various transfer times of river sediments of different sizes and infer that there can be an order of magnitude of difference, or more, between the transfer time of suspended and bedload sediments. This underlines that a good knowledge of the proportion of suspended vs. bedload sediments transported in the river is required to accurately assess how fast erosion products are transferred in a catchment and how fast a catchment is likely to respond to external forcing factors. Abstract: The concentration of dissolved and particulate Re have been measured in the Narmada, Tapi and the Mandovi estuaries in the Arabian Sea and the Hooghly estuary in the Bay of Bengal. Re concentration in water and particulate matter of these estuaries is highly variable. Re in river waters analysed varies from 1 to 41pmol/kg, the lowest in the Mandovi and the highest in the Mahi river. Re concentrations in the rivers analysed except in the Mandovi river are higher than the average global riverine Re concentration of 2.1pmol/kg. Based on this study and the available data, the contemporary global annual flux of dissolved riverine Re is estimated to be ~350×103 mol with an average concentration of ~9.2pmol/kg, much higher than the earlier estimates. Residence time of Re in the oceans based on this estimate is 175,000years, ~4 times lower compared to earlier estimates. Re behaves conservatively in all the estuaries studied. Re concentrations of seawater in the Bay of Bengal and in the Arabian Sea, estimated from the data of the Hooghly and the Mandovi estuaries respectively are ~40pmol/kg, similar to the open ocean Re values of the Arabian Sea measured in this study and the values reported for in other oceanic regions. However, the dissolved Re in the Gulf of Cambay is 2 to 5 times higher, consistent with the high Re measured in the Mahi estuary and in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Cambay. The source of high Re in the Gulf of Cambay seems to be anthropogenic, measurements of Re in rivers and industrial waste waters draining into the Gulf supply amount to ~2300mol of Re annually. This anthropogenic supply coupled with high residence time of water in the Gulf contribute to its high Re. Re concentration in suspended sediments of the Narmada estuary varies from 1 to 2pmol/g, and does not show any discernible trend with salinity. The contemporary global riverine Re supply to the oceans estimated in this study is ~2–4 times higher compared to its removal in the reducing (anoxic/suboxic) sediments, indicating non-steady state of Re in the ocean. High dissolved riverine Re flux coupled with high Re content in the Gulf of Cambay highlights the need of a detailed study of Re in the various global rivers and in oceans including coastal regions and semi enclosed basins of the world to understand its behaviour in various reservoirs and to constrain the residence time of Re in the ocean. Abstract: Sedimentology, carbon isotope and sequence stratigraphic analysis of subsurface sediments from western part of Ganges–Brahmaputra (GB) delta plain shows that a Late Quaternary marine clay and fluvial channel-overbank sediments of MIS 5 and 3 highstands are traceable below the Holocene strata. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) sea-level lowering of >100m produced a regional unconformity (type 1), represented by palaeosols and incised valley. C4 vegetation expanded on exposed lowstand surface in an ambient dry glacial climate. At ∼9ka transgression inundated the lowstand surface pushing the coastline and mangrove front ∼100km inland. Simultaneous intensification of monsoon and very high sediment discharge (∼4–8 times than modern) caused a rapid aggradation of both floodplain and estuarine valley fill deposits between 8 and 7ka. The Hoogli River remaining along its present drainage possibly acted as the main conduit for transgression and sediment discharge that was subsequently abandoned. C3 vegetation dominated the delta plain during this time. From 7ka onward progradation of delta plain started and continued till recent. This period experienced a mixed C3–C4 vegetation with localized mangroves in the mid-Holocene to dominant return of C4 vegetation in the late Holocene period. The study indicates that while the initiation of western part of GB delta occurred at least 1ka earlier than the global mean delta formation age, the progradation started at ∼7ka, at least 2ka earlier than thought before. Abstract: The newly constructed port in 2001 at Ennore, on the southeast coast of India near Chennai, with breakwaters on either side (north and south) has been causing large-scale changes in nearshore morphology. Beach profiles and shoreline positions along 25 km coastline of Ennore were measured at regular intervals during 2001–06 to understand the sediment transport patterns in the region. At the same time the results of wave hind-casting and wave transformation modeling were incorporated in LITDRIFT model to compute the sediment transport rates along Ennore coast. The model results are compared with the sediment transport values obtained from beach profile measurements. The performance of the model at different locations within the study area with variable wave conditions has been examined. The annual net sediment loss (−) versus accumulation (+) were estimated for two smaller study areas (cells) containing ten regularly spaced beach profiles numbered from north to south, BP1-5 in cell I and BP6-10 in cell II. For the cell I region, which is protected by the Ennore shoals and where human interference is minimum, the annual net sediment supply is +0.02×106 m3 as obtained from beach profile measurements while the model gave a value of +0.014×106 m3. For the cell II region where there is large human intervention by way of Ennore port development and breakwater construction, the annual net sediment movement as obtained by the beach measurements is −0.14×106 m3 while the model gave a value of −0.154×106 m3. It is found that the performance of the model is satisfactory and the model may be used successfully to study sediment dynamics along any coastline provided one has detailed understanding of the coastline orientation, nearshore topography, cross-shore bathymetry and prevailing annual wave climate. Based on the sediment transport data and beach profile measurements the beach and shoreline changes for transect locations BP-1 to BP-10 are also critically examined in this paper. The article presents a study on the use of geographical information system (GIS) techniques and remote sensing for descritization of the catchment in Himalayan Chaukhutia watershed in India. Different thematic factors of universal soil loss equation (USLE) were generated and overlaid to compute spatially distributed gross soil erosion maps for the watershed. The maps show the amount of sediment rate from a particular grid in spatial domain. It was found that the proposed method simulated the annual sediment yield with about 40 percent error.

A detailed study of sediment components and selected metals has been carried out in two mudflat cores collected from the creeks of Kalinadi Estuary, India, in order to assess the variations in distribution of sediment components, metals, and the controlling processes, including early diagenetic movements, if any. Grain size analyses reveal the possibilities of three episodes of deposition in a highly varying depositional environment with overall fining up of the cores. Organic carbon (OC) is comparatively high in muddy Core KM, which was collected from a more sheltered creek with a narrow mouth in the estuarine interior, than sandy Core KH, which was collected from a creek with a wide mouth nearer to the sea. Geochemical data show an upper zone of marked enrichment of all trace metals, including Fe and Mn, in both the cores. The variations in sediment components as well as associated metals between the two cores reveal variations in controlling factors including the morphology setup. The distribution of trace metals in Core KH are controlled by the proportions of finer fraction of sediments, degradation of organic carbon, and redox-sensitive Fe and Mn oxides, while the distribution of trace metals in Core KM are probably controlled by the finer sediments as well as by redox-sensitive Fe and Mn oxides. In an estuarine channel the tidal asymmetry, sediment transport, and morphology are interconnected. To maintain a stable channel, we need to take tidal asymmetry into account. A relationship connecting tidal asymmetry and sediment transport rate has been used to evaluate the relative merits of channel modification through numerical simulations. Two criteria have been identified for ensuring the channel stability: (a) maintaining ebb dominance and (b) minimizing the spatial gradient in the net sediment transport function (q). Using these criteria for a test case, we have evaluated Hooghly estuary (east coast, India), where heavy sedimentation is experienced and a permanent solution is needed. The approach provides better insight into the sedimentation pattern in a semidiurnal tidal process in a shallow estuary with braided channels. Among the factors affecting tidal asymmetry, the relative phase difference (β) between M2 and M4 current constituents has a major influence and is thus responsible for the sedimentation pattern. Through numerical study it was found that a combination of deepened, uniform channel with enhanced ebb flow led to a favorable β, indicating less deposition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The construction of multiple dams and barrages in many Indian River basins over the last few decades significantly reduced river flow to the sea and affected the sediment regime. More reservoir construction is planned through the proposed National River Linking Project (NRLP), which will transfer massive amounts of water from the North to the South of India. The impacts of these developments on fertile and ecologically sensitive deltaic environments are poorly understood and quantified at present. In this paper an attempt is made to identify, locate and quantify coastal erosion and deposition processes in one of the major river basins in India—the Krishna—using a time series of Landsat images for 1977, 1990 and 2001 with a spatial resolution ranging from 57.0 m to 28.5 m. The dynamics of these processes are analyzed together with the time series of river flow, sediment discharge and sediment storage in the basin. Comparisons are made with similar processes identified and quantified earlier in the delta of a neighboring similarly large river basin—the Godavari. The results suggest that coastal erosion in the Krishna Delta progressed over the last 25 years at the average rate of 77.6 ha yr−1, dominating the entire delta coastline and exceeding the deposition rate threefold. The retreat of the Krishna Delta may be explained primarily by the reduced river inflow to the delta (which is three times less at present than 50 years ago) and the associated reduction of sediment load. A multilevel breadth-averaged numerical model has been developed and applied it to the Gulf of Khambhat to study the tidal circulation, salinity, and suspended sediment transport. The model is fully nonlinear and uses a semiexplicit finite difference scheme to solve mass, momentum, and advection diffusion equations in a vertical plane. A turbulent kinetic-energy scheme is used to parameterize the vertical transfer of momentum, salinity, and suspended sediments. The model is forced by prescribing the tidal elevations along the open boundary of the analysis region. The tide in the gulf is mainly represented in the model by the semidiurnal M2 constituent. A freshwater discharge from the landward end is also considered for this study. The erosion and deposition are computed by empirically developed source and sink terms in the suspended sediment equation. Numerical experiments were carried out to simulate the tidal circulation, salinity intrusion, and suspended sediment transport in the gulf region. The north Chennai coast, on the east coast of India, experiences severe erosion caused by waves, and an area of the beach about 600 m wide has eroded over the past 120 years. To protect the seafront, natural stones were dumped by government agencies along the coast for a distance of about 6 km, and in the process, a short beach pocket 400 m long was left unprotected for various reasons. Because the property of a chemical factory located in this 400-m stretch of beach pocket suffered damage caused by erosion, and because the need for a wide beachfront was stressed by local fishermen, an alternative method of protecting the beach was suggested. The proposal involved construction of an S-type rubble sea wall about 100 m long on the southern end of the beach pocket. This paper discusses the numerical model studies conducted to determine the configuration of the S-type rubble sea wall and its effectiveness in beach protection. The model studies suggested a length of projection of 14 m with a radius of curvature of 310 m for the S-type sea wall to achieve the desired performance. Field studies conducted on the 40-m-wide and 400-m-long beach pocket with the 100-m-long S-type sea wall indicate that the sea wall is effective in protecting the beach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stormwater runoff is a major pathway for transporting sediment and other nonpoint-source pollutants from watersheds to stream systems and other surface water bodies. In this study, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was used to assess sediment transport from the 17 km² Banha watershed located in northeast India, which is characterized by mixed land use and on-stream sediment control structures called checkdams. Calibration (1996) and validation (1997-2001) of surface runoff and sediment yield were performed with SWAT on both a daily and monthly basis by comparing model estimates versus measured data. The calibration R² and Nash-Sutcliffe modeling efficiency (NSE) statistics were found to range between 0.70 to 0.99 for surface runoff and 0.82 to 0.98 for sediment loss. The corresponding validation period statistics ranged from 0.60 to 0.92 for surface runoff and 0.58 to 0.89 for sediment loss. Following calibration and validation, the SWAT model was executed with and without checkdams to test its capability in visualizing the impacts of sediment control structures in the watershed. The model estimates showed that sediment loss from the watershed could be reduced more than 64% by adopting checkdams as a barrier for sediment. The results also revealed the potential for using SWAT to assess sediment transport from specific subwatersheds within a watershed, and to prioritize the siting of sediment control structures within a watershed to obtain the most effective reduction of sediment losses to surface water. Overall, the study showed that SWAT can be a useful tool for studying how checkdams can be used to manage and control sediment loss from small watersheds located in sub-humid climate conditions. Based on the measured data, wave height and current speed at a few locations are presented along with the estimated sediment transport rates. The maximum significant wave height recorded during the passage of a cyclone along the west coast in a water depth of 27 m was 6 m. The current measurements show that the maximum currents vary from about 1.4 m/s in the open ocean to about 3.2 m/s in the Gulf of Khambhat. The gross longshore sediment transport rate was about 1 x 106 m³ per year along south Kerala and south Orissa. The estimated longshore sediment transport rates show that net transport along the east coast of India is towards the north, whereas along the west coast it is mostly towards the south. A depth-averaged numerical model has been developed to study tidal circulation and suspended sediment transport in the Gulf of Kachchh including Kandla creek, west coast of India. The resolution of the model is taken as 750 m × 750 m, which is found to be adequate for the gulf region. However, this resolution could not produce the realistic circulation pattern and suspended sediment concentration in the Kandla creek region. There is a major seaport at Kandla which serves as the sea gate to northwest India. Therefore, a 2-D fine resolution (75 m × 75 m) model for Kandla creek has been developed and coupled with the coarser gulf model to compute the flow features in the creek region. The model dynamics and basic formulation remain the same for both the gulf model and the creek model. The models are barotropic, based on shallow water equations, and neglect horizontal diffusion and wind stress terms in the momentum equations. The models are fully nonlinear and use a semiexplicit finite difference scheme to solve mass, momentum, and advection-diffusion equations in a horizontal plane. The tide in the gulf is represented in the model by the semidiurnal M 2 constituent mainly. In this study, no fresh water discharge conditions have been considered so the results are appropriate for the dry season. Numerical experiments are carried out to study the circulation and suspended sediment concentrations in the gulf and the creek regions. Abstract: The Brahmaputra River finds its origin in the Chema Yundung glacier of Tibet and flows through India and Bangladesh. The slope of the river decreases suddenly in front of the Himalayas and results in the deposition of sediment and a braided channel pattern. It flows through Assam, India, along a valley comprising its own Recent alluvium. In Assam the basin receives 300 cm mean annual rainfall, 66–85% of which occurs in the monsoon period from June through September. Mean annual discharge at Pandu for 1955–1990 is 16,682.24 m3 s− 1. Average monthly discharge is highest in July (19%) and lowest in February (2%). Most hydrographs exhibit multiple flood peaks occurring at different times from June to September. The mean annual suspended sediment load is 402 million tons and average monthly sediment discharge is highest in June (19.05%) and lowest in January (1.02%). The bed load at Pandu was found to be 5–15% of the total load of the river. Three kinds of major geomorphic units are found in the basin. The river bed of the Brahmaputra shows four topographic levels, with increasing height and vegetation. The single first order primary channels of this braided river split into two or more smaller second order channels separated by bars and islands. The second order channels are of three kinds. The maximum length and width of the bars in the area under study are 18.43 km and 6.17 km, respectively. The Brahmaputra channel is characterised by mid-channel bars, side bars, tributary mouth bars and unit bars. The geometry of meandering tributary rivers shows that the relationship between meander wavelength and bend radius is most linear. The Brahmaputra had been undergoing overall aggradation by about 16 cm during 1971 to 1979. The channel of the Brahmaputra River has been migrating because of channel widening and avulsion. The meandering tributaries change because of neck cut-off and progressive shifting at the meander bends. The braiding index of the Brahmaputra has been increasing from 6.11 in 1912–1928 to 8.33 in 1996. During the twentieth century, the total amount of bank area lost from erosion was 868 km2. Maximum rate of shift of the north bank to south resulting in erosion was 227.5 m/year and maximum rate of shift of the south bank to north resulting in accretion was 331.56 m/year. The study region located north of Chennai city on the East coast of India is facing shoreline erosion/accretion related problems after the introduction of Ennore Port during 2001. For the present study 25 km of coastal stretch has been taken up, which comprises Ennore port region. natural sandy beaches of Kattupalli Island, which is a turtle breeding ground and Ennore Creek and Pulicat Lake inlets, with a total coastal settlement population of 25,000 people. After the introduction of breakwaters for the port, beach erosion and accretion are considered as critical problems, resulting in damages to the natural set up of the coastal region in the study area. Analyses of coastal dynamics and vulnerable zones of erosion and accretion along the coast were performed during the present study which are highly useful for the development of strategies for heath erosion/accretion management. Four major categories of shoreline changes were observed in the study region, viz., 1) Beach accretion south of Ennore Port, 2) Beach fill erosion north of north breakwater of Ennore Port, 3) Almost stable coastline at the central part of the study region and 4) Shifting inlet of Pulicat Lake. Quantitative analyses are made from shoreline survey using Real Time Kinematic GPS, beach profile survey in four identified transects, characteristics of environmental parameters such as tides, waves, currents and sediment nature in the near shore region. Long shore sediment transport was computed for four cells using numerical modeling package to quantify the changing littoral drift in study region. Results show reduction in sediment transport from -0.66 X 106 m³/year on the southern side of Ennore port to -0.57 x 106 m³/year on the northern side of Ennore Port. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fluvial systems and landscape of the drylands of western India have preserved evidence of Late Quaternary environmental and tectonic changes. Data on the fluvial systems of Mainland Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kachchh have been synthesised to evaluate the roles of geological factors in the evolution of these drylands.Mainland Gujarat is largely underlain by the flat alluvial plain, and has a structurally controlled fluvial system that originates in the eastern uplands. The fluvial system of Mainland Gujarat shows deeply incised valleys, entrenched meanders, extensively developed ravines and uplifted terraces, which have preserved a Late Quaternary succession of continental (fluvial and aeolian) and marine sediments dating back to ∼125 ka. Marine sediments correspond to the transgressive phases of the last interglacial (∼125 ka) and post-glacial maximum (6 ka). The overlying alluvial sediments suggest deposition by ephemeral rivers in varied fluvial depositional environments under a semi-arid to sub-humid climatic regime with periods of intense pedogenesis. The sedimentation can be correlated with marine isotopic stages (MIS) 5 and 3. The fluvial sediments are buried under a thick blanket of aeolian sediments, which are indicative of enhanced dune building activity in the Thar Desert and are correlatable to the global arid phase of the last glacial maximum. The post-aeolian tectonic uplift triggered severe erosion of Late Pleistocene sediments and 40–50 m deep incised fluvial valleys were formed. This erosional phase suggests a resumption of fluvial activity, which coincided with the rapidly rising sea level on the west coast during the Early Holocene. The Holocene marine and fluvial aggradation was initiated within the incised fluvial valleys around 6 ka and continued uninterrupted until ∼2 ka. These sediments now occur as raised valley fill terraces suggesting a Late Holocene uplift further corroborated by low to moderate seismic activity during historical times.The landscape of Saurashtra is marked by flat-topped basaltic (trappean) ridges and a highly varied coastline where a narrow belt of low ridges and cliffs of miliolite limestones and other shore deposits are found. The fluvial system of Saurashtra shows a radial drainage pattern. The channels have steep banks in the hilly regions and show significant deflections before meeting the sea. Evidence of last interglacial high sea levels (∼125 ka) are found on the coastal cliffs of southern Saurashtra in the form of oyster reefs and notches of various types which now occur at higher levels. A net sea level rise of +7 m consistent with the global sea level estimates at 125 ka has been obtained by recent studies after decoupling the tectonic component. Dating of Late Pleistocene and Holocene sea levels on this coast suggest continued uplift of Saurashtra since 125 ka even though the sea level continued to fluctuate. The Holocene high sea submerged a considerable stretch of land including the Okha Rann on the northern Saurashtra coast and isolated patches in and around the river mouths on the southern coast. The short, straight and parallel courses of rivers in the direction of tectonic slope, incised and confined channel belts also suggest a strong component of tectonic uplift. The continental sediments exposed in these river valleys have however remained uninvestigated leading to lack of palaeoclimatic data.A remarkable control of structure on landscape evolution is depicted by the Kachchh peninsula. The fluvial system exhibits the characteristics of drainage flowing along tectonically provided slopes. The overall drainage pattern of Kachchh shows excellent correlation with N–S trending transverse fault patterns. The transverse fault system has brought out changes in the landscape of Kachchh though the Kachchh rift basin evolved along E–W latitudinal faults. The Quaternary deposits occur in the form of miliolite limestones, colluvial and alluvial fans, fluvial sands and silts, and Rann sediments. Significant sedimentologic details on these sediments are lacking. However, the marine incursions seem to correlate with the adjacent Saurashtra and Mainland Gujarat. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Although, a variety of methods have been employed to determine sediment transport along Goa coast, the results differ in some sections. Fifteen studies have been reviewed, compared, re-assessed and a corrected shore drift map of the Goa coast is prepared and presented. Advantages and limitations of these methods are discussed. The present review and re-assessment confirms that, though sediment transport is bi-directional, the long-term net shore drift direction along Calangute and Colva beaches is southward. The overall net shore drift direction along Goa coast is also towards south. It is qualitatively determined that except for 3 short drift cells, shore zone has long-term stability. Finally, it is concluded that landform indicator study using remote sensing can be an effective method for determining tong-term net shore drift along the coast. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rivers of India reveal certain special characteristics because they undergo large seasonal fluctuations in flow and sediment load. The rivers are adjusted to an array of discharges, and most rivers exhibit morphologies that are related to high-magnitude floods. In the last 100 years primarily hydraulic engineers have contributed to the understanding of the fluvial forms and processes. Though this trend has continued even today, in recent decades some interesting fluvial research has also been carried out by earth scientists. Four large rivers, namely Brahmaputra, Kosi, Indus and Narmada, have received greater attention from fluvial geomorphologists. The major themes in Indian fluvial geomorphology include the hydrology of monsoonal rivers; forms and processes in alluvial channels; causes of avulsion, channel migration; and anomalous variations in channel patterns; dynamics of suspended sediment; and the geomorphic impacts of floods. Studies of bedrock channels are far less than similar studies in alluvial channels. Only a few rivers have been investigated in this respect. Studies indicate that the Himalayan rivers are different in many respects from those of the Indian Peninsula. The former occupy a highly dynamic environment with extreme variability in discharge and sediment load. Earthquakes and landslides also have a great impact on these rivers from time to time. Consequently, the rivers are characterized by frequent changes in shape, size, position and planform. In comparison, the adjustments in Peninsular rivers are less frequent and of a much smaller magnitude. An inescapable conclusion is that in the tropical monsoonal environment, large floods are important geomorphic agents that temporarily affect the forms and behavioural characteristics of some rivers, but leave a lasting effect on others. The beaches of Chavara and Manavalakuruchi of the southwest coast of India have rich heavy mineral concentrations with distinctive spatial and temporal distributions. Both locations exhibit high concentrations of heavy minerals on the northern sides of the headlands, with practically no concentration on the southern sides. Cross-shore, the sediments become less rich in the heavy minerals offshore. During the rough monsoon when the winds are onshore the concentration of heavy minerals along the mid-tide line of the beaches is considerably higher than during the calm non-monsoon when swell prevails. The concentrations of heavy minerals alongshore were highest in zones where the beach with relict sediments of high mineral content is eroding. We find that the patterns observed in the heavy minerals along the Chavara coast can be explained by a single hypothesis dependent on the presence of a source and the winnowing of the more easily entrained low-density fractions. The pattern appears to be slightly different for Manavalakuruchi coast where the zone of hundred percent enrichment is adjacent to the river mouth, indicating an additional source of river input. Analysis of wave and current data showed the dominant role of waves over coastal currents in the transport of these sediments and the wave-induced thresholds for initiation of motion indicated that the heavy component is less easily moved than the white sand (quartz) constituent. We suggest that the patterns can be explained by winnowing of the white sands from the eroded beach sediments during the stormy monsoon leaving higher enrichment at the beach. In the swell period of the post-monsoon, the erosion ceases as the asymmetric swells re-establish the beach, bringing proportionally more of the more-easily entrained white sediment shorewards, thereby explaining the reduced enrichment at this time. The cross-shore reduction in heavy minerals may be simply explained as an inverse relationship to distance from the beach source. The longshore distribution is a response to the presence of the source of black sands on the northern sides of the headlands. The headlands may simply act to isolate the source, thereby explaining the tendency for high concentrations on one side only. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Beach morphologies, primarily include shape, surface changes/variation, and beach volume along with slope, are very dynamic and believed to be largely controlled by waves and currents (Komar, 1998). Contrary to this general notion, results presented in this paper suggest a strong control of the local morpho-tectonic frame-work on foreshore sedimentation. In the 20 km long study area between Bhatkal on the north and Uppunda in the south, foreshore morphology range from reflective and dissipative to intermediate types, but nearshore hydrodynamic regime is similar. The inland morpho-tectonic frame-work reveals graben and horst-like structures. The foreshores bordering these grabens and horsts are dissipative and reflective respectively, have distinctly different granulometric dynamics and sedimentation processes, whereas an intermediate type between the dissipative and the reflective show a large seasonal variability in terms of beach width and slope. The foreshore profile modification indicated that the reflective beaches remained reflective and the dissipative beaches remained dissipative throughout the year, despite the large variation in the wave energy condition from monsoon through post-monsoon to pre-monsoon. Spit growth is observed only in the dissipative beach. Granulometric dynamics in all the three types of beaches show distinct differences. The reflective beaches show significant fluvial characteristics of sediments in all the seasons, dissipative beaches show minor fluvial characteristics and the intermediate beaches show significant fluvial characteristics only during the monsoon seasons. Sediment transport process in the reflective beaches is dominantly by rolling process, in the dissipative beaches suspension is the dominant mechanism, and in the intermediate type beaches a large range from suspension to rolling is observed. Sediments in the beaches are negatively skewed through symmetrical to positively skewed in reflective beaches, while in dissipative beach negative skewness is dominant. Integration of the tectonic framework, beach morphology and granulometric dynamics suggest that temporal and spatial variations in textural characteristics are related to a strong morpho-tectonic control rather than seasonal variations in wave energy condition. Effective discharge plays a major part in sediment and nutrient transport, landscape modification, and river restoration. However, a complete understanding of effective discharge is still missing because of heterogeneity in various fluvial processes. The present study investigates the role of effective discharge for suspended sediment transport in a regulated macrochannel river system, the Brahmani River, India. The natural flow-sediment regime and channel pattern of the Brahmani River have been altered by the Rengali dam. The effective discharge is estimated with both analytical and deterministic methods using long-term hydrological data. The results show the control of regulated flow and sediment regime in the post-dam period contributes to the reduction in effective discharge (1849 m3/s to 820 m3/s), where frequent moderate floods are able to transport a maximum portion of sediment load. An effective discharge integrated stream power curve is formulated, which accurately predicts the channel transition (from sinuous to weakly braided) in the post-dam period. Finally, the proposed probability of braiding captures the chute formation correctly, which further highlights the hierarchy of energy dissipation and morphological continuum in the Brahmani River. Long-term geomorphic evolution of rivers depends both on the amount of sediment supply and on the river's ability to transport that sediment. Climate change is anticipated to change flow frequency distributions and sediment yield and could thus alter the geomorphic trajectory of many regulated rivers. We aim to examine the possible geomorphic response of the upper Godavari River, India, to climate change using two well-accepted metrics: the frequency of the sediment-transporting flows (T*) and the ratio of the sediment flux below and above a dam (S*). Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to simulate streamflow and sediment yield in the basin. We calibrated and validated the model using SWAT-CUP for pre- (1971–75) and post-dam (1976–81) conditions downstream of Jayakwadi dam. The model performance was good (NS value > 0.6 for discharge and PBIAS < ± 10 for sediment) with low uncertainty (p-factor > 0.6 and r-factor <1) and it improved significantly by factoring the operation of the reservoirs into the simulation. We ran the model for 10 years consecutively in the pre and post-dam states for baseline (1971–81) and future (2090–99) climate conditions derived from NEX-GDDP climate projections (Emission scenario RCP 8.5 & 4.5). A linear relationship between T*/S* and observed erosion (m) below the dam provided the basis for estimating the amount of erosion associated with future climate states. Our simulations show substantially larger T* below the dam site in 40% of the 2090s scenarios relative to the baseline conditions. These could be associated with 4–6 times the erosion compared to the baseline. Severe erosion is indicated only under RCP 8.5. Background: Central Himalayan forested catchments provide fresh water supply and innumerable ecosystem services to millions of people. Hence, the understanding of linkages between forests and water is very crucial for availability and quality of water at catchment scale. Therefore, the present study aims to understand the hydrological response of two forested catchments (namely, Arnigad and Bansigad) in the Central Himalayan Region. Methods: Three-years' data (March, 2008 to February, 2011) were collected from meteorological and hydrological stations in Arnigad and Bansigad catchments. The present paper describes the mean hydrological response of these forested catchments investigated through detailed field investigation. Results: The annual hyetograph analysis revealed that the rainfall at both the catchments was highly seasonal, and wet-period (June–September) plays a key role in catchment functioning. Exceedance of rainfall threshold of ~ 200 mm (~ 10% of annual rainfall) significantly increased streamflow generation in both catchments. In Arnigad, the stream was perennial with a mean baseflow of ~ 83 mm per month (~ 6% of annual baseflow) whereas, Bansigad had greater seasonality due to lack of streamflow during the pre-wet-period (March–May). Separation of hydrographs in Arnigad and Bansigad catchments i.e. stormflow (6% and 31%, respectively) and baseflow (50% and 32%, respectively) helped to understand the probability of flooding during wet-period and drought during dry-period. The forest ecosystem in Arnigad displayed healthier hydrological functioning in terms of reduced stormflow (82%), and enhanced baseflow (52%), soil moisture (13%), steady infiltration rate (22%) and lag time (~ 15 min) relative to Bansigad. These enhanced values indicated soil capability to store water in the forested catchment (Arnigad) and helped to understand the volume of water (discharge) that was available during dry-period. The lower denudation rate at Arnigad by 41% resulted in decreased suspended sediment (18%) and bed load (75%) compared to Bansigad. Further, the enhanced dissolved solids in the Arnigad stream resulted from the higher organic matter generated in the forest floor. Conclusion: This study shows that rainfall during the wet-period was the main driver of hydrological functioning, whereas, forests provided substantial services by regulating water balance, soil moisture and sediment budget through different mechanisms of forest components at catchment-scale in the Central Himalayan Region. Flow dynamics are a key part of the physical processes that drive the sediment transport in an aquatic system, affecting depositional processes and leading to landform evolution. The current asymmetry (CA) noted in Vembanad Lake (VL), India, have a particularly strong influence on the sediment budget and thus shape its geomorphology. In the present study the Coastal Ocean Model - Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM) was used to compute the lateral current asymmetries and their implications for the long-term morphological changes in VL during different tidal phases. Model results were utilised to calculate the CA using two criteria: (1) Peak flood/ebb velocities with duration, and (2) Asymmetry Index (AI DV). AI DV values suggest the prevalence of ebb dominance over the entire system except at Cherai and Vallarpadam. However, several isolated pockets were noted on the right/eastern bank (shallow depth) of the system where the peak flood velocity exceeded the ebb, favouring accretion. Contrary to the concept of ebb asymmetry, mean velocity and duration asymmetries were prevalent in the asymmetry index (AI DV); hence we adopted peak flood/ebb velocity and its duration asymmetries to improve our understanding of the sediment transport dynamics. Typical flood asymmetry was identified on the right bank and at many of the lateral stations in VL, which switched to the modified ebb asymmetry during substantial river discharge. Analysis of CA enables understanding of the process that influences selective morphological changes, as explained by the model results. This conclusion was well corroborated by results obtained over the past three decades (1973–2008) from analysis of Landsat satellite imagery. Flood/ebb dominance in VL is explicitly substantiated with regions of accretion/erosion derived from satellite imageries. • Two diamictites units are recognized on the western margin of Cathaysia Block, and correlate with the global Sturtian and Marinoan glaciations. • Late Tonian, middle Cryogenian and early Ediacaran siliciclastic rocks overlying the Cathaysia Block were derived from sources external to South China. • The Cathaysia Block was linked to North India before 720 Ma. Neoproterozoic paleogeography of the Cathaysia Block of South China is directly linked to the formation of Rodinia, its break-up, and the subsequent amalgamation of Gondwana. Two diamictite units occur in the Neoproterozoic sedimentary successions on the western margin of Cathaysia Block. In combination with our detrital zircon U-Pb dating results and corrected chemical weathering index data (CIA corr), these units coincide with the global Sturtian and Marinoan glaciations. Late Tonian to early Ediacaran sedimentary rocks from western Cathaysia contain abundant late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic (1150–870 Ma) and some mid-Neoproterozoic (800–720) detrital zircons. Paleocurrent data indicate sediment transport to the northwest. The timing and character of the ages of detrital zircons match the records of North India and East Antarctica, indicating that the Cathaysia Block received detritus from Gondwana. The present Tibetan plateau is a collage of several terranes, including the Lhasa, Qiangtang, Songpan-Ganzi and Kunlun-Qaidam terranes. Following closure of the Palaeo- and Neo-Tethyan oceans, the terranes of the Tibetan plateau migrated northward, and the deformation timing of the northern part of the Songpan-Ganze terrane between Golmud and Dulan in the Eastern Kunlun Orogenic Belt (EKOB) is still poorly understood. Fission track (FT) analysis of zircon and apatite from two localities between Golmud and Dulan has yielded new information about the timing of deformation in EKOB. Samples collected from Aikeng and Boguole yielded zircon and apatite FT central age ranges of ~193–133 Ma and ~103–29 Ma respectively. Thermal history modelling of FT data revealed five major episodes of cooling in these regions at ~200–170 Ma, ~170–100 Ma, ~100–50 Ma, ~50–18 Ma, and ~18–0 Ma. Stage one represents the collision between the Qiangtang and Kunlun tectonic blocks and the closure of the Songpan-Ganzi-Bayan Har Triassic turbidite basin. In stage two, the northward subduction of the Neo-Tethys oceanic plate accentuated sediment transport to the actively closing ocean basin between the Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes, the far-field effect of collision caused the cooling of the EKOB. Stage three is characterised by tectonic quiescence, which ended at ~50 Ma due to the collision of India and Asia. In stage four, the establishment of a strike-slip fault system and fold-thrust belt in the EKOB resulted in exhumation. Study of the complex physical processes of beach-nearshore system helps to understand the coastal processes and facilitate coastal planning and management. Since the SW coast of India has very dynamic and contrasting hydrodynamic features, the Veli–Varkala stretch of southern Kerala (SK) and Munambam–Chettuwa sector of central Kerala (CK) were selected for a comparative study of their hydrodynamics. SK is a high wave energy coast compared to CK. The contrasting wave energy regimes result from the differences in the inner shelf slope and shoreline orientation. However, just as in the case of SK, waves and wave induced littoral processes are the dominant driving forces in the coastal processes of CK too. Due to the favorable hydrodynamic and sedimentological characteristics, mudbanks set in at different locations of CK affecting the coastal processes of the locations of its occurrence. Mudbanks do not occur along the SK due to the unfavorable sedimentological features. Artificial morphologies such as seawalls, groins, harbour breakwaters have a great role for coastal processes along both the sectors. The long term shoreline change along the SK and CK can be linked to the contrasting characteristics of longshore sediment transport along the coasts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sand mining adversely behaves with changing river system, especially in the bedload transport process. This study aims to find out the relationships between river water flows, sediment transport regime in bedload transport and also tries to determine how instream mining affect the sediment inflow and channel planform change. The field study has been conducted in three selected sites on Kangsabati River situated in the lower, middle and upper course. Several established equations were applied to derive the results from water flow and sediment regime. GSTAT was used to prepare coarse medium (CM) diagrams and tractive current deposits to analyze the trend of sediment throughout the river course. Sediment and bedload transport were measured using Ackers and White (J Hydraul Eng Div ASCE 99(hy11):2041–2060, 1973) and Meyer-Peter–Muller methods (IAHSR 2nd meeting, Stockholm, appendix 2. IAHR, 1948). Shear stress and critical shear stress were computed using Shields (Application of similarity principles and turbulence research to bedload movement, 1936) and DuBoys equations whereas Friend and Sinha's method (Braiding and meandering parameters, vol 75, No 1, Geological Society, London, 1993) was used to detect irregular planform response caused by sand mining. Regression analysis denotes that mining intensity can be change the shear stress (R2 = 0.972); velocity (R2 = 0.683); grain diameter (R2 = 0.555) and sediment concentration (R2 = 0.997) on bedload transport. Mining activities can be changes of hydraulic responses as well as interruption of sediment and bedload transport throughout the channel. In context of sand mining, planform response denotes that thalweg shifting leads to massive sandchar deposition in upper course, huge channel incision causes river bank erosion in middle course and pool–riffle alteration expanded in channel and pit area in lower course.
