This review article by Stephen Hanauer and the late Joseph B Kirsner (University of Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA) discusses the evolving treatment goals in Crohn's disease. Until relatively recently, the primary goal was symptomatic management. However, the emergence of novel (and earlier use of) disease-modifying agents as well as "objective" disease markers has enabled modulation of disease course. As well as changing the treatment goals, this has a number of other important consequences, including effects on hospitalizations and pharmacoeconomic implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
