Abstract

The article presents a study which introduces a Neural Network (NN) approach to detect and retrieve volcanic ash cloud properties from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data in the Thermal InfraRed spectral range. It looks at the significance of volcanic ash detection and retrievals on aviation safety, citing the incident concerning the Eyjafjallajokull eruption. The study suggests that NN quickness is attractive when the rapid response time of the system is mandatory.
