We investigate how management quality moderates the impact of carbon pricing on Chinese firms. Based on interviews with managers and lead engineers at manufacturing firms in Hubei and Beijing, we construct a novel index of climate-change-related management practices and link it to firm data from various sources. We document higher average productivity and more green innovation among firms that are well managed according to the index. In an event study of the introduction of regional cap-and-trade schemes for CO2, we analyze how management quality interacts with treatment. While treated firms reduced coal consumption more than control firms, this effect is statistically significant only for well-managed firms. The reduction could have been 25% greater if badly managed firms had been well managed. Our study highlights that good management practices, in particular energy monitoring, enhance the effectiveness of market-based climate policies by enabling firms to rationally comply with those policies. The tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng was unearthed in 1978 at Leiguudun in Suizhou City, Hubei Province, China. This is the largest wooden coffin in rock pit and vertical cave in the Warring States period in China. The large wooden coffin components provide reliable material data for the study of the feudal burial system in the pre-Qin period and have high value. In this paper, the wooden coffin excavated from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng was studied. By understanding the composition of wood, studying the weight gain rate, shrinkage rate, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and compression resistance, the wood reinforced by rosin and epoxy resin was compared, and the reinforcement effect and principle of the two reinforcement methods were discussed. The study found that the wood properties of rosin reinforced group were better than those of epoxy reinforced group in the aspects of compressive strength, weight gain rate and volume shrinkage rate, and the mechanical properties of wood were significantly improved. In addition, methanol or ethanol can be used to dissolve the rosin shellac in this strengthening process, which can achieve reversible strengthening treatment. The results provide valuable examples and research ideas for the selection of different conservation techniques of large wooden cultural relics unearthed in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River during the Warring States Period. Age of seedlings at transplanting has profound effects on rice growth. The effect of seedling ages (SA) on rice yield can be studied by varying seeding or transplanting dates. This study aims to determine the responses of yield to SA using the two methods for varying SA. Four experiments were conducted in farmers' fields in Wuxue County, Hubei Province, China on middle-season rice in 2016–2018. SA of 20, 30, and 40 days were achieved by varying seeding dates in 2016 and 2017, whereas SA of 20 and 40 days were achieved by varying transplanting dates in 2017 and 2018. Old seedlings increased total crop duration, but reduced crop duration in the main field compared with young seedlings. Averaged across varieties, yield was reduced significantly by old seedlings when SA was achieved by varying seeding dates, whereas yield did not respond to SA with varied transplanting dates. Among eight varieties, only one had consistent yield reduction in old seedlings compared with young seedlings. For the rest varieties, SA had inconsistent effects on yield. The response of yield to SA largely depended on differences of heat stress during panicle development and flowering caused by different seeding or transplanting dates and different crop durations of varieties. Our results suggest that transplanting old seedlings up to 40 days did not necessarily reduce yield of middle-season rice in central China as long as heat stress during panicle development and flowering could be avoided by selecting suitable varieties with proper seeding or transplanting dates. Objective: Analyze the clinical and genetic characteristics of a rare Chinese family with Multiple synostoses syndrome and identify the causative variant with the high‐throughput sequencing approach. Methods: The medical history investigation, physical examination, imaging examination, and audiological examination of the family members were performed. DNA samples were extracted from the family members. The candidate variant was identified by performing whole‐exome sequencing of the proband, then verified by Sanger sequencing in the family. Results: The family named HBSY‐018 from Hubei province had 18 subjects in three generations, and six subjects were diagnosed with conductive or mixed hearing loss. Meanwhile, characteristic features including short philtrum, hemicylindrical nose, and hypoplastic alae nasi were noticed among those patients. Symptoms of proximal interdigital joint adhesion and inflexibility were found. The family was diagnosed as Multiple synostoses syndrome type 1 (SYNS1).The inheritance pattern of this family was autosomal dominant. A novel mutation in the NOG gene c.533G>A was identified by performing whole‐exome sequencing of the proband. The substitution of cysteine encoding 178th position with tyrosine (p.Cys178Tyr) was caused by this mutation, which was conserved across species. Co‐segregation of disease phenotypes was demonstrated by the family verification. Conclusion: The family diagnosed as SYNS1 was caused by the novel mutation (c.533G>A) of NOG. The combination of clinical diagnosis and molecular diagnosis had improved the understanding of this rare disease and provided a scientific basis for genetic counseling in the family. • Topsoil removal reduced total N uptake, total dry biomass, and grain yield of rice. • Topsoil had the largest contribution to plant N uptake from midtillering to panicle initiation. • Topsoil removal had the largest effect on panicles m−2 among yield components. • Total dry biomass rather than harvest index was affected by topsoil removal. Rice nitrogen (N) uptake and yield formation depend on both applied N fertilizer and soil-derived N. In this study, we determined the effects of topsoil removal on the N uptake and yield formation of rice crop. Four rice varieties were grown in farmers' fields in Wuxue County, Hubei Province, China in 2016–2018 under the treatments of topsoil removal (TR) and control (CK). The TR treatment was established by desurfacing soil at about half of the topsoil depth (11−15 cm). Experiments were conducted in three adjacent fields in the three years and 100 kg N ha−1 was applied in all plots except for zero-N treatment in 2018. Averaged across years, N treatments, and varieties, topsoil removal reduced total N uptake by 27.8 %. The period from midtillering to panicle initiation had the highest daily N uptake from topsoil compared with other growing periods. During this growing period, the percentage of N uptake from topsoil to plant N uptake ranged from 54.2 to 62.4 % with an average value of 56.4 % across both zero-N and N-applied treatments. On average, topsoil removal reduced grain yield by 16.7 % and total dry biomass by 17.6 %. Among yield components, panicles m−2 was mainly responsible for the yield reduction in TR. Furthermore, total dry biomass rather than harvest index explained the yield reduction in TR compared with CK. Our results suggest that topsoil provided substantial N to rice crop especially during the period from midtillering to panicle initiation for achieving higher grain yield through increased panicles m−2 and biomass production. Introduction: High risk of mental health problems is associated with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study explored the prevalence of depressive symptoms (depression hereafter) and its relationship with quality of life (QOL) in clinically stable patients with COVID-19.Methods: This was an online survey conducted in COVID-19 patients across five designated isolation hospitals for COVID-19 in Hubei province, China. Depression and QOL were assessed with standardized instruments.Results: A total of 770 participants were included. The prevalence of depression was 43.1% (95%CI: 39.6%-46.6%). Binary logistic regression analysis found that having a family member infected with COVID-19 (OR=1.51, P = 0.01), suffering from severe COVID-19 infection (OR=1.67, P = 0.03), male gender (OR=0.53, P<0.01), and frequent social media use to obtain COVID-19 related information (OR=0.65, P<0.01) were independently associated with depression. Patients with depression had lower QOL than those without.Conclusion: Depression is highly prevalent in clinically stable patients with COVID-19. Regular screening and appropriate treatment of depression are urgently warranted for this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
