The article discusses the controversy surrounding U.S. Interior Department official David Smith's 2004 killing of a bison on his friend's Texas ranch. Suspicion arose as he was found to have used preferential treatment in a deal designating Houston as a port of entry for wildlife. The deal would have saved taxidermist Mike Simpson thousands of dollars in permit fees and other costs. Smith has since paid for the remains of the bison and left his job to practice law.
