Objective: To evaluate the severity of the dental arch relationships and the treatment outcomes of reverse headgear (RHG) in southern Chinese patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP)., Design: A retrospective study., Setting: Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong., Patients: Thirty-eight UCLP patients with complete records. Among them, 14 were later treated with RHG (RHG group) and 24 were under review (non-RHG group) before definitive orthodontic or in conjunction with orthognathic surgery., Interventions: Study models at T1 (aged 9.4 ± 0.4 years old), prebone grafting and before any orthodontic treatment started; T2 (aged 11.3 ± 0.6 years old), after bone grafting, and RHG treatment (RHG group) or under review (non-RHG group); and T3 (aged 15.3 ± 3.2 years old), pretreatment of definitive orthodontic or in conjunction with orthognathic surgery., Main Outcome Measures: With satisfactory intra- and interexaminer agreement proven by the kappa value, the dental arch relationships of the study models at T1, T2, and T3 were assessed by a solo calibrated examiner using the GOSLON Yardstick., Results: The median GOSLON score for southern Chinese patients with UCLP at T1 was 4.0. Sixty percent of the patients were categorized as "poor" at T1. RHG significantly improved dental arch relationships from T1 to T2, and the improvement was maintained until T3 assessed by the GOSLON Yardstick., Conclusions: The dental arch relationships in southern Chinese UCLP patients at 8 to 10 years old are unfavorable. RHG treatment shows positive effects in improving the dental arch relationships in UCLP patients, as assessed by the GOSLON Yardstick.

To delineate the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in laryngeal cancer in Southern Chinese, a retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in a major otorhinolaryngology referral center in Hong Kong. Eighty-five Chinese patients with histology-confirmed laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) diagnosed between 2005 and 2010 were examined for the status of HPV by PCR, and the expression of p16 and p53 by immunohistochemistry. The HPV, p16 and p53 findings were correlated with clinicopathological features, recurrence and 5-year survival. HPV DNA was detected in one patient (1.2%, 95%CI: 0.2-6.4%) who had glottic cancer and harbored HPV-6. Overexpression of p16 and p53 were detected in 11 (12.9%) and 47 (55.3%) cases, respectively. Recurrence occurred in 22.4% of patients at a median of 13 months. The 5-year overall survival and disease-specific survival were 55.7% and 72.4%, respectively. Overexpression of p16 or p53 was not associated with clinicopathological features, recurrence or overall survival. HPV plays a limited role in laryngeal cancer in Hong Kong Southern Chinese. In contrast to oropharyngeal cancer, p16 cannot be used as a surrogate marker for oncogenic involvement of HPV and cannot predict survival in laryngeal cancer., (© 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Background: Many countries have recently experienced a rapid increase in the demand for forensic age estimates of unaccompanied minors. Hong Kong is a major tourist and business center where there has been an increase in the number of people intercepted with false travel documents. An accurate estimation of age is only possible when a dataset for age estimation that has been derived from the corresponding ethnic population. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop and validate a Reference Data Set (RDS) for dental age estimation for southern Chinese., Materials and Methods: A total of 2306 subjects were selected from the patient archives of a large dental hospital and the chronological age for each subject was recorded. This age was assigned to each specific stage of dental development for each tooth to create a RDS. To validate this RDS, a further 484 subjects were randomly chosen from the patient archives and their dental age was assessed based on the scores from the RDS. Dental age was estimated using meta-analysis command corresponding to random effects statistical model. Chronological age (CA) and Dental Age (DA) were compared using the paired t-test., Results: The overall difference between the chronological and dental age (CA-DA) was 0.05 years (2.6 weeks) for males and 0.03 years (1.6 weeks) for females. The paired t-test indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between the chronological and dental age (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: The validated southern Chinese reference dataset based on dental maturation accurately estimated the chronological age., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd and Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine.
