Examines whether there were genetic differences in the ticks Carios capensi among four widely separated geographic populations in Japan, Hawaii, South Carolina and Texas. Comparison between the mithocondrial sequences in the ticks Carios capensis from Torishima Island, Japan with that of Carios capensis from Hawaii, South Carolina and Texas; Possibility of an exchange of genetic material between tick populations in the North Pacific and within the Atlantic Ocean areas facilitated by migratory birds; Phylogenetic separation of the Carios capensis from Ornithodoros species and Ornithodoros porcinus.

Japanese Americans include Japanese individuals migrating from Japan to the United States (first-generation Japanese Americans [JA-1]) and their offspring (second- or later-generation Japanese Americans [JA-2]). Although Japanese Americans share their genetic predisposition with the Japanese, their lifestyles have been westernized rapidly and extensively. We conducted a medical survey for atherosclerosis among Japanese Americans living in Hawaii and Los Angeles and native Japanese living in Hiroshima for 50 years since 1970 (the Hawaii-Los Angeles-Hiroshima Study) and obtained the following results:(1) In the 1990s, a westernized lifestyle induced hyperlipidemia among Japanese Americans, and based on the evaluation of the carotid artery intima-media wall thickness (IMT), atherosclerosis was apparently more advanced in Japanese Americans than in native Japanese. In addition, the advancement of atherosclerosis corresponded to the degree of westernization of lifestyles in JA-1 and JA-2.(2) In the 2010s, the serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in native Japanese were significantly higher than those in Japanese Americans, and the difference in the progression of carotid artery IMT was smaller between native Japanese and Japanese Americans.(3) Maintaining a healthy Japanese lifestyle since childhood may suppress future worsening of risk factors for atherosclerosis (such as obesity and diabetes mellitus) and contribute to atherosclerosis prevention in the Japanese.

Objectives: There is limited evidence for the use of salt tablets in the treatment of hyponatremia. This retrospective study evaluated the effectiveness of salt tablet administration in euvolemic hyponatremia., Methods: This was a single-center, retrospective cohort study. Information on patients' demographics, clinical characteristics, and laboratory data were collected for retrospective review. Treatment for hyponatremia, including the amount of salt tablets, fluid restriction, and diuretics was collected. We compared hyponatremic patients with those who received salt tablets versus those who did not receive salt tablets. The primary outcome of interest was the change in serum sodium at 48 hours between the two groups., Results: A total of 1258 medical records were initially screened with inclusion and exclusion criteria. After screening, there were 83 patients included in the study. Forty-two patients received salt tablets and 41 patients were in the group that did not receive salt tablets. Patients treated with salt tablets were older, more often female, and had lower body weight and lower initial serum sodium. The change in serum sodium after 48 hours was higher in the salt tablet group (5.2 mEq/L) than the non-salt tablet group (3.1 mEq/L; P < 0.001). This difference in serum sodium between the two groups remained statistically significant when adjusted for age, sex, weight, and initial serum sodium., Conclusions: The use of salt tablets in the treatment of euvolemic hyponatremia is associated with a small but significant improvement in serum sodium compared with patients who did not receive such therapy, even after adjusting for age, sex, weight, and initial serum sodium. This study supports the effectiveness of salt tablets in the treatment of euvolemic hyponatremia in medical patients.

To illustrate the impact of westernization of lifestyle on the development of pre-clinical atherosclerosis in Japanese people, we compared risk factors for atherosclerosis such as serum lipids, blood pressure, BMI, insulin resistance, and smoking habits between non-diabetic native Japanese and non-diabetic Japanese Americans. Two hundred and twenty two non-diabetic Japanese Americans living in Hawaii and 271 non-diabetic Japanese living in Hiroshima, Japan were studied. Carotid intima-media wall thickness (IMT) was measured in all subjects by one physician. For all measurements the same ultrasound instrumentation was used. Although no significant differences were seen in serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides, or LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels between the two groups in the 1998 study, previous to 1998 these three parameters were significantly higher in Japanese Americans than native Japanese in our study which has spanned the past 20 years. IMT was significantly greater in Japanese Americans than native Japanese (1.20+/-0.03 mm vs. 0.98+/-0.03 mm, (mean+/-S.E.) respectively; P<0.0001). Moreover Japanese Americans reach an IMT of 1.1 mm at age 50, whereas the native Japanese reach this value at age 70. These observations indicate more rapid atherosclerosis progression in Japanese Americans. Based on our IMT measurements, the status and the estimated progression of atherosclerosis in Japanese Americans is increased. Since IMT is a validated endpoint for assessment of atherosclerotic disease risk, it can be concluded that Japanese Americans are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease.
