Recent studies showed that the distribution of hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotype exhibited geographical and ethnic characteristics. Haikou city is the largest city on Hainan Island that geographically isolated from mainland of China, and is the home of multiple ethnic groups. The aim of the study was to investigate the characteristics of the HBV genotype/subgenotype distribution in Haikou city. HBV DNA was isolated from180 serum samples derived from the Han and Li groups. The HBV genotype was detected by polymerase chain reaction using genotype-specific primers and was further determined by full-length genome sequences. The results revealed that the genotype B (37.2%) and C (62.8%) were the predominant HBV genotypes in Haikou, regardless of ethnic background., Additionally, the genotype distribution was not significantly different regarding ethnicity, sex or level of serum HBV DNA. Moreover, there were multiple subgenotypes circulating in the region. In conclusion, our study revealed the diverse HBV genotypes/subgenotypes in Haikou. • The quality of turmeric in China was evaluated by HPLC and GC/MS. • Both curcuminoids and volatile constituents were analyzed. • 160 samples from five production areas were tested. • The morphology of turmeric was correlated with curcuminoid contents and production areas. • The GC/MS profiles could be affected by storage and processing. Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is a popular herbal medicine worldwide. Curcuminoids and volatile constituents are its major bioactive components. To improve the quality control of turmeric, we determined the contents of three main curcuminoids in 160 batches of turmeric samples collected from five major production areas of China by HPLC, and analyzed the volatile components by GC/MS. The results indicated that samples with red cross sections (2.75 ± 0.82 mg/g) contained significantly higher amounts of curcuminoids than samples with yellow sections (1.23 ± 0.60 mg/g) (p < 0.001). This result was consistent with empirical standard of TCM pharmacists. The contents of curcuminoids in samples from Hainan (4.51±0.25%), Guizhou (3.17±0.41%), and Sichuan (2.25±0.54%) were relatively high and consistent. Moreover, the GC/MS profiles of turmeric may be affected by storage and processing. This study sets a good example for comprehensive quality control of herbal medicines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
