Many massive sulfide deposits have been discovered in the Upper Paleozoic rift-related volcaniclastic sequence in South China, among which the Yushui copper deposit is the most important due to its high grade. The deposit has been variably attributed as SEDEX (sedimentary exhalative) or MVT (Mississippi valley type). The Yushui copper deposit in Guangdong (South China) contains stratiform bornite-chalcopyrite orebodies (102.1 kt Cu @ 3.5%, 186.6 kt Pb @ 4.29%, 117.6 kt Zn @ 2.91%, and 339 t Ag @ 112 g/t) developed along the contact between Upper Carboniferous dolostone and Lower Carboniferous pebbly quartz sandstone, which indicates a shallow marine deposition environment. The Yushui deposit comprises an upper massive sulfide orebody and a lower stockwork orebody with intense alteration. In this study, we newly identified Carboniferous tuffs and syn-volcanic faults in the footwall, and exhalites in the hanging-wall. Hematite from the Cu ores yielded a U-Pb age of 320 ± 15 Ma (MSWD = 2.1, n = 57), and hydrothermal dolomite yielded a Sm-Nd isochron age of 308.1 ± 4.6 Ma (n = 7; MSWD = 0.94), which constrains the timing of mineralization at Yushui. These ages are coeval with the Carboniferous host rocks. Combining the evidence from the geological features (syn-volcanic faults, volcanic rocks, exhalites) and hematite trace element compositions, we suggest that the Yushui is a shallow marine VMS (volcanogenic massive sulfide) deposit. The Sr-Nd isotope composition of hydrothermal dolomite (εNd ~−12) indicates that the ore-forming materials were originated from the crustal basement. The Yushui copper deposit was likely formed during the Late Carboniferous continental back-arc extension in eastern South China. The regional extension may have caused enhanced heat flow, which promoted fluid convection in the basement rocks. In addition, we suggest that volcanic rocks and disseminated chalcopyrite-pyrite mineralization in the Lower Carboniferous quartz sandstone and exhalites are good indicators for regional VMS prospecting. The Lianhuashan deposit has long been regarded as a typical tungsten porphyry deposit, located in the eastern Guangdong Province, in the Southeastern Coastal Metallogenic Belt (SCMB). LA-MC-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating of the quartz porphyry yielded a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 137.3 ± 2.0 Ma, which is interpreted as the emplacement age of the quartz porphyry. Hydrothermal muscovite yielded a plateau 40Ar/39Ar age of 133.2 ± 0.9 Ma, which is consistent with the zircon U-Pb age, suggesting that the tungsten mineralization is genetically related to the quartz porphyry. Combined with previous studies, we suggest that there is a 145-135 Ma episode linking the granitic magmas with W-Sn ore systems in the SCMB. Zircon εHf (t) values of the quartz porphyry are in range of − 3.8 to 0.9, and the two-stage Hf model ages (TDM2) are 1.1-1.4 Ga, which is younger than the basement rocks in the Cathaysia Block (1.8-2.2 Ga), signifying that the quartz porphyry was predominantly derived from melting of Mesoproterozoic crust containing variable amounts of mantle components. In combination with the newly recognized coeval alkaline/bimodal magmatism and A-type granites in eastern Guangdong, we suggest that the 145-135 Ma W-Sn metallogenic event of the SCMB is related to a geodynamic setting of large-scale lithospheric extension and thinning, which can be ascribed to melting of the crust caused by mantle upwelling, triggered by the oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate. The Xiling Sn deposit in eastern Guangdong Province comprises the Fengdishan Sn and the Saozhoudi Sn–Pb–Zn ore blocks and has long been regarded as a volcanic–subvolcanic system related to Sn polymetallic mineralization. Here, we present fluid inclusion microthermometric data from different ore stages and H–O–S isotope data of hydrothermal minerals to constrain the genesis of the Xiling deposit. Fluid inclusions from stage I have Th values from ~ 340 to 420 °C and salinities from ~ 15 to 17 wt% NaCl equivalent, while homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions from stages II to V range from ~ 150 to 320 °C, and salinities range between ~ 1 and 6 wt% equivalent. The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition of quartz and cassiterite (δDfluid − 65‰; δ18Ofluid 3.6 to 6.3‰) suggest that the ore-forming fluids from stage I have a distinct magmatic signature, whereas those from stage II through stage IV (δDfluid from − 80 to − 49‰; δ18Ofluid from − 3.7 to 2.5‰) show characteristics of mixing between meteoric and magmatic fluids. Moreover, δ34S values for sulfides from the Fengdishan ore block have a narrow range of 0.6 to 2.5‰ with a mean close to 0‰, consistent with a magmatic sulfur source. By contrast, δ34S values for ore minerals from the Saozhoudi ore block range from 3.4 to 11.5‰, suggesting involvement of a sedimentary sulfur source. In addition, a previous geochronological study has shown that the volcanic–subvolcanic host rocks have an age of 160–170 Ma, while the Sn polymetallic mineralization has an age of about 145 Ma. Our data support a model of mixing of magmatic brine from a hidden granitic intrusion with meteoric water. The S isotope data and the observed temperature gradient of the fluid system suggest that the Sn mineralization is developed in the central part of the ore system, while the Sn–Pb–Zn and Pb–Zn mineralization occurs in the distal part. Very few studies deal with the biogeochemical behaviors of rare earth elements (REEs) in goldfields. This paper presents the geochemical and biogeochemical characteristics of REEs within the soil-plant system in the Hetai goldfield, Guangdong, China. The samples from the goldfield region show anomalies in distribution patterns and behavioral characteristics of REES as compared with those from the background areas. The REEs in rocks, soils, and plants prove to be much higher than those in the surrounding regions. The distribution patterns of REEs are characterized by LREE-enrichment and HREE-depletion, with the REE concentrations in Layer A being the highest. Differentiations between LREEs and HREEs may lead to some extent of negative Eu anomaly in the soils. Research results demonstrate that the REEs in a soil profile can be transferred and accumulated during the mineral formation and supergenic geochemical processes, and the anomalies are obviously related to the geological settings for the REE-bearing ore-forming processes and to the geochemical characteristics of the habitats for the REE-bearing plants. For Dicranopteris dichotoma, the total amount of REEs in the tissues shows an order of leaf > root > stem, while for Pinus massoniana the order becomes root > leaf > stem. The distribution patterns of REEs in Pinus massoniana leaves are similar to those in soils where the plants grow up in the mineralization area. However, in the background areas the REE distribution patterns for Pinus massoniana stems are similar to those for soils where the plants grow up. Parameters such as biological absorption coefficients and biological transfer coefficients show the differences in REE absorption features among plants and indicate that REEs can be transferred among plant organs. The two coefficients can reveal the different survival mechanisms for the two plant species, which are subject to long-term REE-affected stress conditions in the gold mineralization zone.
