This article concerns the development of archaeology and museology, in the Ottoman Empire, Turkey, and Greece, through the life and career of Théodore Macridy. Macridy participated in knowledge transfer in more than one discipline and more than one country. Through his links with Western academic circles in archaeology and museology, he made a significant contribution to their development in the Ottoman Empire, Turkey, and Greece. Living between the Ottoman and Greek epistemic communities as an Ottoman citizen of Greek origin, he excavated numerous sites of the Ottoman Empire, worked at the Ottoman Imperial Museum, and contributed to the foundation of the Benaki Museum in Athens at the end of his career. This makes him a good example of an Ottoman Greek scholar whose liminal identity led to his relative neglect in both Greek and Turkish archaeology and museology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Some areas of the territory of present-day Greece were under Ottoman rule for more than 500 years. To date, the study of this period has largely been neglected, with academic research generally focused on Prehistoric and ancient Greece. However, over the course of the last 20 years, there have been noteworthy developments in the study of the Ottoman history and archaeology of Greece. This paper has two aims: (1) to summarize research conducted in the fields of Ottoman archaeology and material culture in Greece, focusing on demographics, settlement layouts and ceramics, particularly table wares; and (2) to present recent efforts to record and protect the Ottoman monuments of Greece. The article focues developments on archeology in Greece in 2014-2015 which featured different exhibitions and festivals that highlight various discoveries and collections in the field.

Although it is rarely discussed, a row of badly worn Archaic-period columns that lines the western side of the Upper Forum of ancient Corinth holds the potential to speak volumes about several periods in the long architectural history of the site. First fully exposed in 1933, this colonnade stretches northward from the northwest corner of the South Stoa to a point just west of the Central Shops that divide the Upper and Lower Forums of the Roman colony. Archaeologists have consistently noted that the details of these columns indicate they had once served as the interior colonnade for the nearby sixth-century B.C.E. Temple of Apollo. Additional excavation in this area in the 1970s has shown that they were reerected in their present location sometime in the middle of the first century C.E. This article offers a more careful examination of the colonnade in both its primary and secondary contexts. There is much this structure can reveal about the Archaic-period temple both before and after the destruction of Corinth in 146 B.C.E., the appearance of the western end of the Roman forum, and the practice of architectural reuse in the Roman era. This paper explores the role played by the Archaeological Society at Athens under the influential leadership of the epigrapher Stephanos Koumanoudis (1818-1899) in the discovery, preservation, and publication of inscriptions in nineteenth-century Greece, and in the emergence of epigraphy as a scientific discipline in a scholarly context focused on sensational archaeological finds. The region of Boiotia provides illuminating case-studies, notably with the emblematic site of Tanagra, whose systematic looting in the 1870s sparked intense debates over the preservation of Greek antiquities and highlighted the need for new archaeological legislation. In this paper, I study the emergence and advancement of epigraphic studies in roughly the first forty years following the foundation of the modern Greek state. The main protagonists - most of whom remain unknown outside Greece - are introduced, and their epigraphic output in its multiple manifestations is examined: the recording and analysis of inscriptions, the publication of articles and monographs, and the creation and protection of epigraphic collections. My study is contextualized by examining contemporary issues of ethnic identity and state-institution formation, as well as questions of interface amongst the Greek intellectuals themselves on the one hand, and between them and their European counterparts on the other. Ultimately, however, an attempt is made to understand the form and content that early epigraphic studies acquired in the Greek-speaking world, and the extent to which Greek scholarship contributed to the emerging field of epigraphy as it materialized with the publication of the early epigraphic corpora. Amorgos is widely known for its Early Cycladic antiquities, which now predominantly adorn private collections and numerous museums outside Greece. Some of the finest Cycladica associated with the island emerged before the first systematic excavations were conducted in 1894 by Christos Tsountas. With the exception of brief references, this early period of Cycladic exploration is little known. This article attempts to identify and reconstruct the private excavations that took place on Amorgos and the organization, operation, and trafficking of the island's Early Cycladic antiquities between 1880 and 1894. By integrating archival and archaeological material, this study offers glimpses of the cultural history of late 19th-century Amorgos and of some of the protagonists who paved the way for the systematic investigation of the early Cyclades. The author takes a fresh look at the contract forged between the Greek state and the American School of Classical Studies at Athens for the excavations of the Athenian Agora. Clashes with evicted locals and the pervasive tensions that accompanied the affair are most commonly seen as a confrontation between colonialist scholarly interests and mundane local concerns. The relationship, however, was more complex. A process of double colonization was in operation, one driven both by the ideals of Hellenism and by the apparatus of modernist archaeology. National and colonial archaeologies are not distinct forms, but hybrid expressions of the same phenomenon: Western capitalist modernity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With his Descriptio insulae Cretae and Liber insularum Arcipelagi, Cristoforo Buondelmonti initiated the isolario tradition in the early fifteenth century. Both works were inspired by his urge to recover Greek and Roman antiquity through the "restoration" of ancient geography and the study of ancient material remains. The article aims to contextualize Buondelmonti's antiquarian surveys and erudite compilation methods, as expressions of the efforts of early fifteenth-century Florentine Humanism to reassess the ancient heritage of Crete and the Greek islands. The article discusses archaeological research in Greece. The author comments on the influence of Greek civilization on daily life in Athens, Greece. The establishment of the Greek Archaeological Society and the work of French, German, American and British scholars scholars in excavating Greek buildings are discussed. Archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann's work excavating Mycenae, Greece aided the funding of archaeological work in the region. German archaeologists determined that a temple built at Ægina, Greece was dedicated to the deity Aphæa rather than the goddess Athena as previously assumed. The discovery of the site of the Dodona oracle and the relationship of archaeology to the imagination are discussed.

A conference paper about the significant archaeological discoveries and life of Dr. Heinrich Schliemann is presented. It discusses his birth on January 6, 1822 and his early life in the town of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. It details his travels and research in India, China, and Egypt. His research on the ancient city of Troy, Greece is also discussed.
