This study aimed to validate the Greek version of the Dissociative Experience Scale (DES). A sample of 340 psychiatric outpatients and controls was selected. Part of the sample went through a retest procedure after a two-week period. Due to the absence of equivalent tests, the Multiscale Dissociation Inventory (MDI), the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-Dissociative Disorders Revised (SCID-D-R), and the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale were used. Explanatory factor analysis was performed, resulting in a 28-item scale; the analysis revealed four factors, explaining 61% of total variation: Depersonalization, Amnesia, Absorption, and Miscellaneous. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the DES was 0.95. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of the total score between the first and second interview was 0.84. Concurrent and convergent validity, as assessed by correlations with clinical assessment used as a "gold standard," (0.77), MDI (0.96), and Zung scale (0.75) were satisfactory to excellent. The total score on the DES was significantly higher in the clinical sample than in the controls (17.8 ± 16.2 vs. 5.8 ± 7.2, p <.001), indicating high discriminant validity. After the ROC analysis was run, the best compromise between sensitivity/specificity was achieved at the value of 20. The Greek version of the DES is a reliable and valid tool suitable to assess dissociation in clinical and healthy populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A research project is underway aiming to develop a field diagnostic tool for six important viruses of the pig sector, namely: African swine fever virus (ASFV), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), swine influenza virus (SIV), porcine parvovirus (PPV), porcine circovirus (PCV2), and classical swine fever virus (CSFV). To obtain a preliminary sounding of the interest in this type of instrument among its potential operators, a questionnaire was drawn up and submitted to three categories of stakeholders: farmers, veterinarians, and others (including scientific and technical staff working on animal farms). Four countries participated: Italy, Greece, Hungary, and Poland. In total, 83 replies were collected and analysed in a breakdown by stakeholder type and pertinence, where the areas were the importance of the main diseases within the different countries, diagnostic tool operational issues, and economic issues. The main end-users of this kind of instrument are expected to be private veterinarians and pig producers. The infectious agents seeming to be most interesting to diagnose with the instrument are PRRSV, SIV, PPV, and PCV2. The most decisive parameters which have been selected by the stakeholders are sensitivity, cost, simplicity, and time required to obtain results. The economic issue analysis showed that the majority of those who would prefer to buy rather than rent the device are willing to pay up to €3,000 for a diagnostic field tool. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept of learning disabilities (LD) was incorporated in the Greek legislation on disabilities and special educational needs in the early 1980s. However, up until now, Greek authorities have declined to endorse any definition of the condition. Identification of LD is mostly based on the discrepancy model and is characterized by the use of diverse criteria and procedures, despite the existence of recently developed Greek diagnostic tools. A positive development, however, is the recent introduction of the model of response to intervention in Greek educational practice. There is evidence to suggest that the rate of LD in the general student population is lower in Greece than that reported by other countries, although there are reasons supporting the view that the number of students with LD is rising. No generally accepted estimates exist as to the magnitude of specific LD subtypes. The theories informing the identification and the educational support of students with LD in Greece are those contemporarily utilized by researchers in other developed counties. Abstract: The detection of specific factors of the developmental dyslexia at an early stage, and the identification of the role of those factors responsible for its manifestation, is a fundamental area of study on dyslexia in the recent literature. The objective of the present study is to clarify that dysfunctions in the following specific domains contribute in a causal model to the occurrence of dyslexia at an early stage: phonological awareness, psychomotor ability (body shape, spatio-temporal orientation, grapho-motor ability and laterality), perception, memory, attention, prereading and prewriting skills. The results of three studies, – carried out in Greece – which revealed the above factors as main predictors of the early onset of Specific Developmental Dyslexia (SDD) and confirmed the importance of intervention methods to it, led us to the construction of the proposed, causal model. The findings of these three studies converge on the perspective that the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of dysfunctions in the above domains, from preschool age, enable the early and reliable prevention of future difficulties in the learning process of children.
