The article offers the author's insights on the historical clan Homerids and sophist Scopelian of Clazomenae, who were highlighted in the book "Lives of the Sophists," by Flavius Philostratus. The author says that the fame of Homerids of Chios Island, Greece was addressed in the epic poems by Scopelianus as poetasters who can imitate his poem. He also argues that the other type of compositions to Homerids and Philostratus was not only focusing on Chian Homerids but on Smyrnean Homerids as well.

This paper deals with an oft-neglected aspect of the complex relationships between the Hellenistic culture and the Archaic and Classical tradition, namely the epigrams handed down to us in both epigraphical and literary sources. These (unfortunately rare) epigrams represent the only opportunity we have to detect the divergence between the original Archaic or Classical texts preserved on stone and their copies transmitted by manuscripts. Indeed, the Archaic and Classical epigrams have usually been handed down to us either as inscriptions or in manuscript copies, but very rarely in both forms. During the literary transmission the epigrams were modified in many ways: e. g. the writing conventions of the Archaic alphabets were abandoned and replaced by the ''standard'' system, and the linguistic shape suffered remarkable alterations. One of the aims of this paper is to explore the nature of the modifications undergone by some Archaic and Classical epigrams on stone during their literary transmission. Obviously, most of the modifications found in the literary tradition are either banal scribal errors or alterations due to the well-known tendency of those who copied the texts to turn dialect forms into their Attic (Koine) counterparts. Yet in some instances the modifications seem to be deliberate and in line with the typically Hellenistic tendency to ''embellish'' the texts by means of dialect forms absent from the original but perceived as ''prestigious''. A unique double figure on a Late Geometric vessel known as the Agora oinochoe (P 4885) has been interpreted in a variety of ways. In this article the author explores problems with previous interpretations and offers new readings of the figure, the scene, and the frieze. The figure should not be interpreted as the conjoined Molione-Aktorione twins or, indeed, as conjoined at all, in which case there is little to connect the scene with Homeric epic. The scene can be viewed more convincingly as an experiment in narrative, simultaneously showing two moments in time. The frieze in its entirety might even be regarded as an ingenious optical trick. The article focuses on classical Greek poet Homer's epic "Odyssey." It is observed that ancient critics examined this epic from philosophical and ethical points of view. It is noted that there was a tendency among them to look for ethical and moral enlightenment in the epic. It is commented that the Roman poet Horace's treatment of this epic is an example of this line of criticism. The author says that this approach has not been fully abandoned even in modern times, but it has become less prominent. It is noted that this morality-centric approach failed to do justice to the complex personality of Odysseus, the main character in the "Odyssey."
