In the framework of our studies on Citrus cultivars in Greece, the chemical composition of the essential oils (EOs) from the peels and leaves of orange, pummelo, and tangelo (mandarin × grapefruit hybrid) cultivated in Greece have been studied. All EOs have been analyzed through GC-MS, and a total of 47 and 87 metabolites were identified in the peels and leaves, respectively. These metabolites are classified into the chemical groups of terpenes, alcohols, aldehydes, esters, ketones, and organic acids. Limonene was the most abundant compound in the peel EOs. Moreover, bioactive polymethoxyflavones (PMFs) were isolated and structurally determined from the peels of orange and tangelo, highlighting them as a good potential source of natural PMFs. All EOs were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against nine human pathogenic microorganisms (six bacteria and three fungi), showing an interesting profile. The EOs from the peels of all Citrus species exhibited a stronger antimicrobial activity compared to those from the leaves. The susceptibility of the assayed Gram-positive bacteria was observed to be greater than that of Gram-negative bacteria, while the fungi were also relatively less resistant than bacteria. The rootstock choice did not influence the EO profile of the fruit peel but exerted an influence on the chemical profile of the leaves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Timetables for energy transition vary across EU Member States. The planning for dealing with the consequences of the transition in affected regions also varies. Under the pressure of the ten-year economic crisis, Greece is one of the few countries that has committed to stop using lignite in electricity generation, achieving 80% by 2023 and definitively by 2028. Apart from its environmental impact, the country assessed using lignite in electricity generation as unprofitable and damaging to the Greek economy. Simultaneously, it formulated a national energy transition plan for the country's lignite areas. The plan also provides support for existing enterprises and incentives for new enterprises. European and domestic financial instruments accompany the support incentives. The compressed timetable is ambitious and demanding, entailing risks of project failure. As one of the first Member State projects to be completed in 2028, its outcome will shape an ambient atmosphere, positive or negative, for other Member States' projects as well. Based on the transition plan and the timelines to which Greece has committed, this research examines the reanimation of rural areas involved in lignite mining from the perspective of entrepreneurship and financial support instruments. The findings revealed that while there is strong social consensus around the design that incorporates best practices, the basis for the completion schedule has unrealistic elements that will have potentially negative consequences for the restoration of the areas that the energy transition affects. Simple Summary: The complexity of possible interactions of baseline patient characteristics and cancer-related factors with the course of COVID-19 is illustrated by the controversial results of studies that assess the severity and outcome of COVID-19 in cancer patients. The present research is a single-institution analysis of 121 melanoma patients with COVID-19. The purpose of our study is to characterize the spectrum of severity and outcome of COVID-19 in melanoma patients. The 30-day mortality rate after COVID-19 infection was low (4.2%). Melanoma stage, treatment receipt and treatment type had no impact on COVID-19 severity and hospitalization risk. Vaccinated patients experienced milder disease compared to the unvaccinated ones. Heart failure and the time period of the infection were independent predictors of severity. The results of the study expand the evidence on the safety of melanoma treatments in light of COVID-19 and will be useful to clinicians treating melanoma patients with COVID-19. We conducted a single-center, non-interventional retrospective study of melanoma patients with COVID-19 (1 March 2020 until 17 March 2023). The cohort was further divided into three groups according to the periods of SARS-CoV-2 variant dominance in Greece. We recorded demographics, comorbidities, vaccination data, cancer diagnosis/stage, types of systemic melanoma treatments, date of COVID-19 diagnosis and survival. We identified 121 patients. The vast majority (87.6%) had advanced disease (stages III or IV). A total of 80.1% of the patients were receiving immune checkpoint inhibitor-based therapies, 92.5% had asymptomatic/mild COVID-19 and 7.4% had moderate/severe/critical disease, while 83.5% contracted COVID-19 during the third period of the pandemic. Sixteen patients (13.2%) were hospitalized for COVID-19 with a median length of stay of 12 days (range: 1–55 days). Advanced age, heart failure, number of comorbidities (≤1 vs. >1), vaccination status and the time period of the infection correlated with more severe COVID-19, whereas only heart failure and time period were independently correlated with severity. The 30-day mortality rate after COVID-19 was 4.2%. With a median follow-up of 340 days post-COVID-19, 17.4% of patients were deceased. In this cohort of melanoma patients with COVID-19, the 30-day mortality rate was low. There was no association between melanoma stage, treatment receipt and type of treatment with COVID-19 severity. Aim: To retrospectively characterize real-world therapeutic strategies, clinical outcomes and attrition rates with EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), before first-line osimertinib approval, in EGFR-mutated advanced/metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer patients in Greece. Results: Among 160 patients, the discontinuation rate for first-line first- or second-generation EGFR-TKIs was 85%; among these patients, 43% did not receive any second-line therapy and 9.4% died during an 18.7-month follow-up period. Median progression-free and overall survival were 12.1 and 20.9 months, respectively. Osimertinib was offered as second- and third-line treatment in 69.6 and 21.7% of patients with the T790M mutation, respectively. Brain metastases were recorded in 10.6% of patients during treatment, with median overall survival of 4.9 months. Conclusion: Given the high attrition rates and the impact of CNS progression, offering the most appropriate first-line EGFR-TKI treatment with CNS penetration is key to maximize outcomes. Background: Pain as an experience affects person's behavior, which involves social, cultural and psychological factors. Shame is an internal process of social comparisons and acts as a warning mechanism for an impending threat. Objective: To evaluate the association between the fear of pain and the experience of shame in healthcare professionals. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Prefecture of Corinth in Greece. A random sample was selected among healthcare professionals. The final sample was 260 healthcare professionals. The duration of the study was from June to September 2017. The questionnaire included four sections: a) sociodemographic and professional profile of the sample b) the questionnaire «Other As Shame Scale (OAS)», c) the scale of shame's experience, based on Experience of Shame Scale (ESS) and d) the fear of painquestionnaire (FPQ). Descriptive and inferential statistics were used based on SPSS 25. Results: The mean age of the sample was 43.7 years and 78,5% was female. The total mean score of OAS was estimated at 13.7, of ESS 44.2 and of FPQ65.6 indicated that health professionals felt low external shame and moderate internal shame as well as fear of pain. The shame and self-esteem of health professionals were influenced by minor pain (β=0.500), age (β= -0.144) and stressful events during adult life(β=3.791). Moreover, the experience of shame was influenced by minor pain (β=0.595), age (β= -0.390), stressful events during adult life(β=4.512) and married life (β=4.261) Conclusion: The particular nature of health professionals' work and the constant direct or indirect contact with patient's pain probably facilitate the development of mental structures that affect emotional reactions. This work aims to contribute to the knowledge of the impacts of olive oil waste discharge to freshwater and oligotrophic marine environments, since the ecological impact of olive oil wastes in riverine and coastal marine ecosystems, which are the final repositories of the pollutants, is a great environmental problem on a global scale, mostly concerning all the Mediterranean countries with olive oil production. Messinia, in southwestern Greece, is one of the greatest olive oil production areas in Europe. During the last decade around 1.4 × 10 6 tons of olive oil mill wastewater has been disposed in the rivers of Messinia and finally entered the marine ecosystem of Messiniakos gulf. The pollution from olive oil mill wastewater in the main rivers of Messinia and the oligotrophic coastal zone of Messiniakos gulf and its effects on marine organisms were evaluated, before, during and after the olive oil production period. Elevated amounts of phenols (36.2–178 mg L − 1 ) and high concentrations of ammonium (7.29–18.9 mmol L − 1 ) and inorganic phosphorus (0.5–7.48 mmol L − 1 ) were measured in small streams where the liquid disposals from several olive oil industries were gathered before their discharge in the major rivers of Messinia. The large number of olive oil units has downgraded the riverine and marine ecosystems during the productive period and a period more than five months is needed for the recovery of the ecosystem. Statistical analysis showed that the enrichment of freshwater and the coastal zone of Messiniakos gulf in ammonia, nitrite, phenols, total organic carbon, copper, manganese and nickel was directly correlated with the wastes from olive oil. Toxicity tests using 24 h LC 50 Palaemonidae shrimp confirm that olive mill wastewater possesses very high toxicity in the aquatic environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A Lagrangian particle tracking model coupled to a circulation was used to explore the transport, residence time and connectivity of floating litter that originated from the Εastern Ionian Sea during 2011-2014. At the end of simulations, on average 26% of litter was retained within the coastal waters of the Eastern Ionian Sea, whereas 58% was washed into offshore waters without formulating permanent accumulation areas, as the basin-wide surface circulation was characterized by considerable interannual variability. The inflow of litter into the Adriatic and Eastern Mediterranean Seas was moderate, ranging between 9% and 20%, and the beached litter was on average 9.2%, mostly located in the northern subregions. The average residence time of litter particles ranged between 20 and 80 days, implying their temporary retention before drifting offshore. Diet and feeding strategy of the blackmouth catshark Galeus melastomus in the deep waters of the eastern Ionian Sea were investigated. Sampling was carried out using experimental bottom longline fishing at depths ranging from 300 to 855 m in summer and autumn 2010. Diet variability with fish size, season, area, sex and depth zone was tested and only season was found to significantly affect the diet of the species. Of the 870 stomachs examined, only 1·4% were empty. Cumulative prey curves showed that the sample sizes were adequate to describe the main prey items of the diet for both seasons. Prey identified belonged primarily to three major groups: fishes, cephalopods and dendrobranchiatan and caridean shrimps. In autumn, the above three major groups were found as principal prey, whereas in summer cephalopods followed by fishes were the principal prey and shrimps were found as secondary prey. SIMPER analysis indicated high dissimilarity between seasons and highlighted that Sepiolidae, Myctophidae, fishes, cephalopods, shrimps and other crustaceans contributed to seasonal differences in the diet of G. melastomus. The prey diversity index was higher in autumn than in summer. A high dietary overlap was observed between the two seasons. Galeus melastomus behaved as an opportunistic predator with a variety of unimportant prey in its diet. Feeding strategy indicated that G. melastomus holds a generalist niche with a considerable specialization at the individual level.
