We sequenced near full length SIVdrl genomes from four captive drills (Mandrillus leucophaeus). All four animals were born in captivity in German zoos. Although serologically SIV negative before acquisition in zoo A in 2008 and 2009, during a routine analysis all four animals were determined to be SIV antibody positive in 2011. Comparisons of the four new SIVdrl sequences showed high identity among each other (90.7-97.7% in env) and to the only published full length sequence SIVdrl FAO (90.5-92.8% in env), which is also derived from a captive drill. SIVdrl infections seem to be highly prevalent in captive drills, probably resulting from frequent animal transfers between the zoos in an effort to maintain this highly endangered species and its genetic diversity. This should be kept in mind as SIVdrl may be transmitted to uninfected animals in open groups and potentially also to animal keepers having contact with these nonhuman primates.

Objective: We tested the effects of structured health care for the diabetic foot in one region in Germany aiming to reduce the number of major amputations., Research Design and Methods: In a prospective study we investigated patients with diabetic foot in a structured system of outpatient, in-patient and rehabilitative treatment. Subjects were recruited between January 1st, 2000 and December 31, 2007. All participants underwent a two-year follow-up. The modified University of Texas Wound Classification System (UT) was the basis for documentation and data analysis. We evaluated numbers of major amputations, rates of ulcer healing and mortality. In order to compare the effect of the structured health care program with usual care in patients with diabetic foot we evaluated the same parameters at another regional hospital without interdisciplinary care of diabetic foot (controls)., Results: 684 patients with diabetic foot and 508 controls were investigated. At discharge from hospital 28.3% (structured health care program, SHC) vs. 23.0% (controls) of all ulcers had healed completely. 51.5% (SHC) vs. 49.8% (controls) were in UT grade 1.Major amputations were performed in 32 subjects of the structured health care program group (4.7%) vs. 110 (21.7%) in controls (p<0.0001). Mortality during hospitalization was 2.5% (SHC) vs. 9.4% in controls (p<0.001)., Conclusions: With the structured health care program we achieved a significant reduction of major amputation rates by more than 75% as compared to standard care.

This article presents an overview of the recently published first two parts of the Memorandum III "Methods for Health Services Research" discussed and approved by the member societies of the German Network Health Services Research [Deutsches Netzwerk Versorgungsforschung e.V.]. Part one of this memorandum covers methodical principles and minimum standards for the subject areas of health services research "Epidemiological Methods for Health Services Research", "Methods for Organisational Health Services Research" and "Methods for Quality of Life Research", the second part the topics "Methods of Health Economic Evaluation" and "Registries for the Health Services Research". The Memorandum is addressed to health services researchers and to reviewers who are planning, conducting, publishing studies as well as evaluating research proposals and publications. Assurance of quality and increase of the health services research are the aims of the Memorandum III. According to the advanced knowledge in health services research the Memorandum needs regular updates. Therefore the Memorandum has to be understood as "work in progress".
