During their practical training, feedback for preservice teachers should address the demands of diverse classrooms. Using the critical incident technique within a participatory research framework, this study investigated whether and how mentors adjust their feedback in this regard. Based on a sample of 33 preservice teachers and 46 mentor teachers in German primary and lower secondary education, the results indicate that although pupils' differing prerequisites clearly presented challenges for preservice teachers, only part of the mentors referred in their feedback to these demands. Mentors who adapted their feedback referred to well-known methods for addressing differences in pupil performance and background and suggested specific novel strategies by specifying what is possible and expedient (or not) when pupils' prerequisites and backgrounds differ. These methods were found to enhance preservice teachers' self-efficacy and competencies in teaching diverse classes, and mutual diversity-oriented feedback also benefited mentors. In conclusion, the study identifies implications for feedback development.

Examined variation in and relationships among delinquency, attachment to adults, optimism about occupational future, and disposition toward aggressiveness in German adolescent apprentices. Found considerable variation across the four variables. Attachment to adults predicted attitudes toward delinquency and optimism regarding occupational future. High attachment to adults was associated with low delinquency-endorsing attitudes only among low-aggression apprentices. (Author/KB)

We report the long-term follow-up of children transplanted with Treosulfan (TREO)-based conditioning in Germany and Austria. Nine centres reported a total of 109 transplantations. Patients were stratified according to the paediatric TRM risk score derived from the paediatric BMT registry (PRST) and compared with the historical transplant population of this registry. Underlying diseases were malignancies, immunodeficiencies, and haematologic and metabolic disorders. TREO total dose ranged from 21-42 g/m2. Additional conditioning drugs included fludarabine, thiotepa, melphalan, CY and/or TBI. EFS at 3 years for non-malignant and malignant diseases was 88% and 49%, respectively. Leukaemia patients in remission had a survival of 51% at 3 years; nonremission patients relapsed and died within 18 months. TRM and OS in the low-risk groups 0 and 1 were similar to PRST controls. TRM in the high-risk groups 2 and 3 was markedly lower (9% vs 28% and 13% vs 53%, respectively) than in the PRST group, but OS was similar. In conclusion, TREO-based conditioning regimens in children resulted in excellent engraftment and long-term survival in nonmalignant disease. In high-risk malignancy, low acute toxicity was followed by low TRM but it did not translate into increased survival. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is currently the only curative therapy for the severe hematopoietic complications associated with Fanconi anemia (FA). In Germany, it is estimated that 10-15 transplants are performed annually for FA. However, because FA is a DNA repair disorder, standard conditioning regimens confer a high risk of excessive regimen-related toxicities and mortality, and reduced intensity regimens are linked with graft failure in some FA patients. Moreover, development of graft-versus-host disease is a major contributing factor for secondary solid tumors. The relative rarity of the disorder limits HSCT experience at any single center. Consensus meetings were convened to develop a national approach for HSCT in FA. Background: Risk stratification criteria for patients with Ewing's sarcoma family of tumors (ESFT) are still limited. We hypothesized divergent human leukocyte antigen (HLA) patterns in ESFT patients and compared HLA-A, -B and -DR phenotype frequencies of patients with advanced ESFT with those of healthy controls., Patients: HLA types of all German Caucasian patients with advanced ESFT and available HLA-A, -B and -DR data registered in the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Paediatric Registry for Stem Cell Transplantation and the MetaEICESS data bases (study group, n=30) were retrospectively compared with HLA types of healthy German stem cell donors (control group, n=8 862 for single HLA frequencies and n=8 839 for allele combinations). Study group patients had been immuno-typed due to eligibility for allogeneic stem cell transplantation for high risk of treatment failure, and thus constituted a selected subgroup of ESFT patients., Results: After Bonferroni correction for multiple testing (PC), phenotype frequencies of HLA-A24 remained significantly higher in the study group compared to controls (PC<0.05). Furthermore, several HLA combinations were significantly more frequent in the study group compared to controls (all PC<0.05)., Conclusion: We report an increased incidence of circumscribed HLA patterns in German Caucasians with advanced ESFT. Purpose: To evaluate the applicability of the Canadian CT Head Rule (CCHR) on head trauma patients in a German university hospital., Methods: 122 patients (m = 74; f = 48; 40 +/- 19 years) were examined with cranial CT due to minor head trauma. The need for cranial CT according to the CCHR was evaluated retrospectively., Results: With a sensitivity of 98.9 % and a specificity of 46.6 % all patients with the need for neurosurgical intervention were detected by applying the major criteria of the CCHR. Also, every patient with severe brain injury was detected by the extended criteria with a sensitivity of 99.6 % and a specificity of 34.1 %. This would have led to a reduction in the rate of cranial CT examinations by 45.1 % for the major and 22.1 % for the extended criteria. No patient with severe brain injury would have been missed by application of the criteria., Conclusion: The Canadian CT Head Rule for patients with minor head trauma is applicable with a very high sensitivity and the potential of significantly reducing the rate of cranial CT examinations in these patients.
