The role of pre-vocational education in general compulsory education has become increasingly relevant over recent years, with the international debate focussing particularly on its importance in school-to-work transitions. This study considers curriculum design and the implementation of pre-vocational education in four countries with radically different cultures: India, China, Germany and the USA. Using a theoretically framed concept of relevance to inform curriculum analysis, it compares the widely divergent content of curricula. In addition to this, interviews with teachers in all four countries flesh out how the curriculum is implemented in practice. The study, which is based on the "prescribed curriculum" and "enacted curriculum" approach, demonstrates that a range of factors means implementation varies widely from country to country but that teachers in all four countries focus in pre-vocational education on equipping students with life-skills.

This article compares the pre-vocational education curriculum plans in lower-secondary schools in Germany and Mainland China, and their implementation. Choosing the curricula of certain school types in two selected regions in both countries, this research first carries out a content analysis of the curriculum plans, using the criteria developed from the curriculum development theory of Reetz. In the second step, based on the findings on the theoretical level, some semi-structured in-depth teacher interviews are conducted in both countries with the purpose of finding out the degree of curriculum implementation as well as influencing factors in the actual teaching practice. The investigation reveals that in both countries certain disparities exist between the curriculum plan on the one hand and the teaching reality on the other hand. The reasons for the disparity are largely different in the two countries and are closely related to the varied institutional settings, the financial situation, as well as teacher training, etc.

The application of anaerobic digestors to decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DWTS) has gained momentum worldwide due to their ease of operation, high efficiency, and ability to recycle wastewater. However, the microbial mechanisms responsible for the high efficiency and ability of DWTS to recycle wastewater are still unclear. In this study, the microbial community structure and function of two different anaerobic bioreactors (a primary sludge digestor, PSD, and anaerobic membrane bioreactor, AnMBR) of a DWTS located in Germany was investigated using 16S rRNA gene amplicon and metagenomic sequencing, respectively. The results showed that the microbial community structure was remarkably different in PSD and AnMBR. Methanobacteriaceae and Syntrophaceae were identified as the families that significantly differed in abundance between these two bioreactors. We also used genome-centered metagenomics to predict the microbial interactions and methane-generating pathway, which yielded 21 near-complete assembled genomes (MAGs) (average completeness of 93.0% and contamination of 2.9%). These MAGs together represented the majority of the microbial community. MAGs affiliated with methanogenic archaea, including Methanobacterium sp., Methanomicrobiales archaea, Methanomassiliicoccales archaea, and Methanosaeta concilii, were recruited, along with other syntrophic bacterial MAGs associated with anaerobic digestion. Key genes encoding enzymes involved in specific carbohydrate-active and methanogenic pathways in MAGs were identified to illustrate the microbial functions and interactions that occur during anaerobic digestion in the wastewater treatment. From the MAG information, it was predicted that bacteria affiliated with Bacteroidetes, Prolixibacteraceae, and Synergistaceae were the key bacteria involved in anaerobic digestion. In the methane production step, Methanobacterium sp. performed hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis, which reduced carbon dioxide to methane with hydrogen as the primary electron donor. Taken together, our findings provide a clear understanding of the methane-generating pathways and highlight the syntrophic interactions that occur during anaerobic digestion in DWTS. • The full-scale model for UPTF facility is established. • The transient coolant mixing process in RPV is simulated and analyzed. • The CFD best practice guidenline for the coolant mixing in RPV is concluded. The emergency coolant cooling system (ECCS) is designed to inject coolant into reactor pressure vessel (RPV) during loss of coolant accidents, ensuring the sufficient coolant inventory in the nuclear reactor core. During this process, the cold water mixes with high temperature coolant in the primary loop, making the wall of RPV and cold legs suffer severe pressurized thermal shock (PTS) and threatens the integrity of primary loop. In this study, coolant mixing phenomena in the experiment UPTF, which is a 1/1 full-scale model of the PWR with four coolant loops in Germany, was studied numerically using the CFD software Fluent. The best practice guideline for coolant mixing study using CFD method in the reactor primary loop and RPV, including the suitable turbulent model, geometry simplification and mesh conditions, was concluded. The detailed three dimensional thermal hydraulic parameter distributions were achieved and the effect of coolant injection rates on the mixing process is also obtained. Results show that the mixing effect is enhanced due to the existence of reverse flow at the core entrance sections. The high injection rate provides more timely coolant supplement and reduces the possible core exposure time. However, as the injection rate increases, more intensive disturbance on the temperature and velocity fields appear, which is more likely to cause the thermal fatigue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Caroli Disease (CD) and Caroli Syndrome (CS) are rare disorders presenting with dilation of the intrahepatic bile ducts. CD/CS are associated with cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). However, the true incidence of CCA is still unclear, although it may serve as an indication for surgery. In this paper, we analyzed (I) the incidence of CCA in German centers, (II) reviewed our single center population together with its clinical presentation and (III) performed a thorough literature review. 17 large HPB-centers across Germany were contacted and their patients after surgical treatment due to CD/CS with histopathology were included. Medline search for all studies published in English or German literature was performed. Patients who underwent surgery at our department between 2012 and 2020 due to CD or CS were analyzed. In the multicenter study, 79 patients suffered from CD and 119 patients from CS, with a total number of 198 patients. In 14 patients, CCA was found (Overall: 7,1%; CD: 6,3%, CS 7,6%). Between 2012 and 2020, 1661 liver resections were performed at our department. 14 patients underwent surgery due to CD or CS. Histological examination showed synchronous cholangiocarcinoma in one patient. The literature review revealed a CCA-rate of 7,3% in large series, whereas in case reports a rate of 6,8% was found. There is risk of malignant transformation and patients with CD might also benefit from resection due to improvement of symptoms. Therefore, resection is strongly advised. As certain patients with CS require transplantation, treatment should not be guided by the relatively low rate of CCA but by the concomitant diseases that come along with hepatic failure. A new genus and species of marine reptile is described from the Pelsonian (Anisian, Middle Triassic) of Luoping County, Yunnan Province, southwestern China. This diapsid reptile with a secondarily closed upper temporal fossa is the sister taxon to Saurosphargis from the lower Muschelkalk (Anisian, Middle Triassic) of central Europe. It further emphasizes the close faunal affinities between the Eastern and Western Tethyan realm. The new taxon is convergent on cyamodontoid placodonts in having developed a dorsal body armor composed of small osteoderms. The underlying ribs are transversely broadened so as to establish contact along their length, thus forming a closed dorsal 'rib basket,' a unique morphology shared with Saurosphargis. Background: Surgical resection is associated with the best long-term results for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC); however, long-term outcomes are still poor., Objective: The primary aim of this study was to validate the recently proposed MEGNA score and to identify additional prognostic factors influencing short- and long-term survival., Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of a German multicenter cohort operated at 10 tertiary centers from 2004 to 2013. Patients were clustered using the MEGNA score and overall survival was analyzed. Cox regression analysis was used to identify prognostic factors for both overall and 90-day survival., Results: A total of 488 patients undergoing liver resection for ICC fulfilled the inclusion criteria and underwent analysis. Median age was 67 years, 72.5% of patients underwent major hepatic resection, and the lymphadenectomy rate was 86.9%. Median overall survival was 32.2 months. The MEGNA score significantly discriminated the long-term overall survival: 0 (68%), I (48%), II (32%), and III (19%) [p <0.001]. In addition, anemia was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival (hazard ratio 1.78, 95% confidence interval 1.29-2.45; p <0.01)., Conclusion: Hepatic resection provides the best long-term survival in all risk groups (19-65% overall survival). The MEGNA score is a good discriminator using histopathologic items and age for stratification. Correction of anemia should be attempted in every patient who responds to treatment. Perioperative liver failure remains a clinical challenge and contributes to a relevant number of perioperative deaths.

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli isolates have been increasingly reported in different reservoirs. The aims of this study were to investigate the presence of ESBL-producing E. coli in fresh vegetables and to characterise their ESBL gene-carrying plasmids. Among the 245 samples from vegetables investigated during 2011-2013, seven putative ESBL-producing E. coli (salad n = 2, sprouts n = 5) were found. They were subjected to ESBL phenotypic confirmatory tests, detection/sequencing of ESBL genes, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), phylotyping, XbaI-macrorestriction analysis, multilocus sequence typing and transformation. Transformants were characterised by AST, S1-nuclease PFGE, replicon typing, conjugation and investigated for co-located antimicrobial resistance genes. Two ESBL gene-carrying plasmids were sequenced using a HiSeq 2500 system. The seven isolates were confirmed as ESBL producers, displayed unrelated XbaI-patterns and unique sequence types (STs) and belonged to the phylogroups A, B1 or D. The ESBL genes were located on plasmids. Two plasmids carrying bla CTX-M-14 genes (incompatibility group IncK or IncHI2) were seen in isolates from salad (ST973) and sprout (ST527). Two bla CTX-M-15 - (IncFIB; non-typeable) and the IncN bla CTX-M-65 - and IncHI2 bla CTX-M-125 -carrying plasmids were found in isolates from sprouts (ST410, ST847, ST10, ST542). All plasmids were conjugative, except for the IncFIA-FIB bla CTX-M-2 -carrying plasmid. Sequence analysis of two plasmids identified the ESBL genes in close location to other resistance genes: sulfonamide resistance gene sul2, streptomycin resistance genes strA and strB, the plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance gene qnrS1 and bla TEM-1 (sul2-strA-strB-IS66-bla TEM-1 -tnpR-ΔtnpA-ISEcp1-bla CTX-M-15 -Δorf477-ΔtnpA-qnrS1) or the fosfomycin resistance gene fosA3 (ΔISEcp1-bla CTX-M-125 -ΔIS903B-fosA3). Background: BK polyomavirus (BKV) infection and BKV nephropathy (BKVN) are risk factors for allograft function and survival., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed BK viremia and BKVN in 348 patients who received a kidney transplantation donated after brain death (n=232) or living donation (n=116) between 2008 and 2013. A total of 266 patients were treated with standard immunosuppression consisting of basiliximab induction, calcineurin inhibitor (CNI), and mycophenolic acid (MPA, n=219) or everolimus (n=47); 82 patients received more intense immunosuppression with lymphocyte depletion, CNI and MPA (n=38) or everolimus (n=44)., Results: BK viremia occurred in 33 (9.5%) patients in the first year and in 7 (2.0%) recipients in the second year after transplantation. BKVN occurred in 4 (1.1%) patients in the first year. Donor and recipient age, diabetes, previous transplantation, and type of transplantation (donated after brain death vs living donation) were not risk factors (P>.05). BK incidence did not differ depending on induction or maintenance immunosuppression., Conclusion: Incidence of BK viremia is independent of recipient characteristics, type of transplantation as well as induction and maintenance immunosuppression., (© 2016 John Wiley & Sons A/S. We extended our previous genome-wide association study for psoriasis with a multistage replication study including 8,312 individuals with psoriasis (cases) and 12,919 controls from China as well as 3,293 cases and 4,188 controls from Germany and the United States and 254 nuclear families from the United States. We identified six new susceptibility loci associated with psoriasis in the Chinese study containing the candidate genes ERAP1, PTTG1, CSMD1, GJB2, SERPINB8 and ZNF816A (combined P < 5 × 10⁻⁸) and replicated one locus, 5q33.1 (TNIP1-ANXA6), previously reported (combined P = 3.8 × 10⁻²¹) in the European studies. Two of these loci showed evidence for association in the German study at ZNF816A and GJB2 with P = 3.6 × 10⁻³ and P = 7.9 × 10⁻³, respectively. ERAP1 and ZNF816A were associated with type 1 (early onset) psoriasis in the Chinese Han population (test for heterogeneity P = 6.5 × 10⁻³ and P = 1.5 × 10⁻³, respectively). Comparisons with the results of previous GWAS of psoriasis highlight the heterogeneity of disease susceptibility between the Chinese and European populations. Our study identifies new genetic susceptibility factors and suggests new biological pathways in psoriasis.

The C-type lectins DC-SIGN and DC-SIGNR bind and transmit HIV-1 depending on the tetramer formed by "neck" region and carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD). Recent studies indicated polymorphisms in neck region of DC-SIGNR were more frequent and associated with susceptibility to HIV-1 infection, whereas no similar trends were observed on DC-SIGN for rare variations of DC-SIGN among the researched subjects in those studies. In our present study, we found 9 genotype variations of DC-SIGN neck region among HIV infected Germans and 3 variations among HIV infected Chinese, respectively. Comparison of those variations between Chinese and Germans reveals strong ethnic discrepancies, and no significant evidence indicates those variations have resistance to susceptibility to HIV-1 infection.
