Background: According to the personalization effect in multimedia learning, the use of personal and possessive pronouns in instructional materials (e.g., 'you' and 'your') is beneficial. However, current research suggests that the personalization effect is inverted for emotionally aversive content (e.g., illnesses). Objective: This study investigates whether a beneficial personalization effect can be observed for emotionally neutral health-related content whereas the effect may be reversed for emotionally aversive health-related content. Methods: In this study, 139 university students learned both emotionally aversive learning content on type 1 diabetes (within-factor) that was presented in either personalized or non-personalized language (between-factor). The presentation order of the content (neutral first vs. aversive first) was controlled (between-factor), resulting in a 2 × 2 × 2 mixed design. The dependent variables measured include learning outcomes (regarding retention and transfer), state anxiety, extraneous cognitive load, motivation and learning time. Results and Conclusions: In the transfer test, learners generally performed better when learning with non-personalized instructional materials than with personalized instructional materials, regardless of whether the content was emotionally neutral or aversive. The results raise questions regarding the robustness of the personalization effect and the underlying mechanisms of the inverted personalization effect. An alternative explanation to be investigated is whether the direct reference to a disease that the participants do not have (here: 'your type 1 diabetes') leads to schema interference, which could be responsible for poorer learning performance--even if the learning content about the disease can be considered emotionally neutral.

According to the multimedia principle, adding relevant pictures to text is beneficial for learning. This beneficial effect is particularly true for text depicted in pictures (illustrated text information) but not for a text that is not illustrated in pictures (non-illustrated text information). The multimedia principle was examined for threat-related content: spider-fearful participants (SFs) learned about spiders. Since SFs typically inadequately process spider pictures, a beneficial effect of pictures concerning illustrated text information was not assumed for SFs but only for non-anxious control participants (NACs). Participants (N = 123) were randomly assigned to either a text-only condition or a text-picture condition and classified as SFs or NACs. In line with this assumption, adding pictures to text was not beneficial for SFs but only for NACs, particularly for illustrated text information. Thus, the perceived emotional content of pictures can serve as a boundary condition for the well-established multimedia principle.

The COVID-19 pandemic required adjustments and limitations in university teaching, thereby challenging teaching concepts in anatomy requiring in-person contact, including the gross anatomy course. Therefore, the present study investigates the impact of COVID-19-associated adjustments on students' perception of the gross anatomy course's importance and quality, students' preferred learning setting and outcome, and their motivation to involve themselves in academic activities, including becoming a future peer-teacher of the course. Using paper-based questionnaires in Ulm, Germany, 397 (response rate: 82.3%) students of the winter term of 2020/2021 were surveyed using quantitative and qualitative items, which were compared with cohorts prior to the pandemic. Students reported a higher global rating on course quality during COVID-19 (pre-COVID-19: 5.3 ± 0.9, during-COVID-19: 5.6 ± 0.7, p < 0.001; 1 = very bad, 6 = very good). Students' perceived importance of the gross anatomy course showed a small but significant increase (pre-COVID-19: 4.2 ± 0.6, during-COVID-19: 4.3 ± 0.6, p < 0.001; 1 = strongly disagree, 6 = strongly agree). Students' motivation to apply as a peer-teacher remained stable, nevertheless, they reported less interest in transferring their knowledge to junior students. Finally, students reported that they spent significantly more learning time alone and their examination grades remained unchanged during the pandemic. Astonishingly, despite radical changes of the teaching environment due to COVID-19, students appreciate the offered teaching and highly valued the gross anatomy course.

When used in a sensible way, Interactive Whiteboards (IWB) are supposed to motivate and engage students in learning in the classroom. Thereby, they might also stimulate students who are usually more restrained, such as more anxious students. However, the body of research on the impact of IWB lessons is rather small. The present study investigated whether a 45-minute lesson with the IWB compared to a conceptual identical 45-minute lesson without the IWB would support learning and motivation within the subject English as a foreign language for German students. Moreover, the study examined whether the 45-minute lesson with the IWB compared to the 45-minute lesson without the IWB would be better able to counteract the detrimental effects of foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA). One hundred and two eighth graders from two secondary schools in Germany took part in this study and were either taught with the IWB (condition IWB; n = 53) or without the IWB (condition No-IWB; n = 50). Results showed that students in the IWB condition stated to be higher motivated and performed better in a vocabulary test than their counterparts in the No-IWB condition. FLCA was negatively correlated with performance in the vocabulary test. Other than expected, learning with the IWB did not compensate the detrimental effect of FLCA, meaning that learning with the IWB was more beneficial than learning without the IWB irrespective of a student's FLCA. Implications of the study will be discussed.

Purpose: This executive summary of a German national guideline aims to provide the most relevant evidence-based recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of nosocomial pneumonia. Methods: The guideline made use of a systematic assessment and decision process using evidence to decision framework (GRADE). Recommendations were consented by an interdisciplinary panel. Evidence analysis and interpretation was supported by the German innovation fund providing extensive literature searches and (meta-) analyses by an independent methodologist. For this executive summary, selected key recommendations are presented including the quality of evidence and rationale for the level of recommendation. Results: The original guideline contains 26 recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of adults with nosocomial pneumonia, thirteen of which are based on systematic review and/or meta-analysis, while the other 13 represent consensus expert opinion. For this key summary, we present 11 most relevant for everyday clinical practice key recommendations with evidence overview and rationale, of which two are expert consensus and 9 evidence-based (4 strong, 5 weak and 2 open recommendations). For the management of nosocomial pneumonia patients should be divided in those with and without risk factors for multidrug-resistant pathogens and/or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Bacterial multiplex-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) should not be used routinely. Bronchoscopic diagnosis is not considered superior to´non-bronchoscopic sampling in terms of main outcomes. Only patients with septic shock and the presence of an additional risk factor for multidrug-resistant pathogens (MDRP) should receive empiric combination therapy. In clinically stabilized patients, antibiotic therapy should be de-escalated and focused. In critically ill patients, prolonged application of suitable beta-lactam antibiotics should be preferred. Therapy duration is suggested for 7–8 days. Procalcitonin (PCT) based algorithm might be used to shorten the duration of antibiotic treatment. Patients on the intensive care unit (ICU) are at risk for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). Diagnostics for Aspergillus should be performed with an antigen test from bronchial lavage fluid. Conclusion: The current guideline focuses on German epidemiology and standards of care. It should be a guide for the current treatment and management of nosocomial pneumonia in Germany. Self-generated learning (SGL) activities are characterized as an active learning strategy that functions as a support for deeper comprehension. However, the question arises which factors could be essential to fully exploit the effectiveness of SGL activities. One possible factor may be the emotional state of learners during learning. Because different emotional states are associated with different styles of information processing, in turn, they may support learning with SGL activities. Consequently, this study addresses learning with a type of SGL activities, answering elaborative interrogations, and the impact of learners' emotional states. German students (N = 123) were assigned to one of four conditions, resulting from a 2 × 2 design with instructional material (elaborative interrogations vs. no elaborative interrogations) and emotional state (positive vs. negative) as independent variables. Results showed that learners learning with elaborative interrogations experienced the instructional material as more difficult than without elaborative interrogations. Learning with them led to a better transfer learning outcome of concepts that had to be generated by interrogations (not for concepts that were already readable in the text) and had no effect for retention. Unexpectedly, neither an influence of the learners' emotional state nor an interaction of both independent variables could be shown.

The implementation of an ecosystem-based approach (EBA) is a core requirement of the EU Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) directive. Ecosystem-based management presents a fundamental challenge to established practices concerning the planning of marine space and the governance of human activities at sea. Experience to date indicates considerable variation in the application of EBA across Europe. This variation can be attributed in part to differences in underlying planning traditions and cultures. In this article, we examine the specific case of EBA implementation in the current maritime spatial plan for Germany's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Following an interpretive analysis approach, we critically analyse how the scope and function of planning are understood in German MSP policy and practice. A narrow understanding of planning as solely concerned with the spatial coordination of competing claims on marine space is traced to a legalistic terrestrial planning tradition with a long history in German public administration. This narrow interpretation of the role of planning is found to fundamentally restrict the strategic, performative capacity of German MSP and, in particular, the potential for German MSP to apply ecosystem-based management principles. In conclusion, we contend that the implementation of an EBA requires a fundamental shift in planning paradigms and modes of governance. This empirical case provides a basis for critical reflection on the capacity of EU member states to implement an EBA as understood under the MSP directive and the mode of planning this might entail. This research examined whether the informational advantage of an animation over a static picture (and over no visualizations as a control condition) can be compensated by presenting the information in the text that constitutes this informational advantage. In addition, it was investigated whether learners' spatial abilities acted as a compensator in learning with a static picture compared to an animation. Moreover, the underlying cognitive processes were explored by eye tracking measures. Two hundred and one university students were randomly assigned to one to six conditions resulting from a 2 × 3 between-subjects design with text information (with vs. without dynamic information) and visualization format (no visualization vs. static picture vs. animation) as independent variables and spatial abilities as continuous factor. For learning outcomes, results revealed that, other than expected, text information did not moderate learning with the different visualization formats. However, learners receiving visualizations significantly outperformed learners in the control conditions, and learners receiving animations significantly outperformed learners receiving static pictures in a transfer test. An analysis of the eye tracking data revealed that this beneficial effect of animations over static pictures was mediated by a pupillometry measure that is supposed to reflect effortful cognitive processing. Spatial abilities acted as a compensator in learning with the two visualization formats: The advantage of animations was particularly evident for learners with low spatial abilities, but not for learners with high spatial abilities. These results indicate that the informational advantage of animations over static pictures cannot easily be compensated through text information, but by learners' spatial abilities.

Purpose: The use of multi-level labels can enhance product visibility by enabling labeling of various items. Moreover, it can better accommodate the diversity on both the producer and consumer sides. However, studies on the willingness to pay (WTP) for premium levels of those animal welfare labels are scarce. Methodology: We investigate consumers' WTP for a four-level animal husbandry label introduced to the market by German retailers in 2019 by conducting an online survey with 1,223 German meat consumers using Van Westendorp's price sensitivity meter (PSM). Findings: There is a significant increase in WTP for level 3 of the husbandry label, but only a slight increase for level 4. One explanation is that consumers may have the mistaken belief that level 3 already includes outdoor access for animals. As a result of this expectation, consumers may not perceive much added value in level 4, which is reflected in their reluctance to pay a higher price. This is reinforced by the finding that once informed of the criteria, 18% of the participants reduced their WTP for level 3, whereas only 6% considered a discount for level 4. Furthermore, 40% were prepared to pay more for level 4 after being informed of the respective criteria than they had previously stated. Originality: To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to analyze and emphasize the importance of clear label communication, particularly for multilevel animal husbandry labels. In Germany, wolves live in a human-dominated landscape. The return of the wolf to Germany more than 20 years ago is a prime example of successful nature conservation; however, it has also led to conflict due to the high degree of landscape fragmentation and the feeding habits of the wolf. Here, the wolf diet composition was studied based on an analysis of 11,225 scats. Wolves in Germany mainly feed on wild ungulates, which comprise more than 94% of their diet. The predominant species are roe deer and wild boar, whereby in most territories roe deer dominate the diet composition. Depending on availability, red deer and fallow deer may also make up a high proportion of the diet. Seasonal and territorial variation in diet composition has been noted even in directly neighboring territories. Wolves preferentially hunt juveniles of the main prey species. With the exception of the mouflon, which has all but disappeared locally, no other ungulate species has vanished from the wolf's diet. Societal attitude acceptance can influence the digital transformation in agriculture. Digital technologies, such as robots in dairy farming, can lead to more sustainable, animal welfare-friendly and consumer-oriented milk production. This study used the example of the milking and feeding robots to investigate whether society accepts the use of robots in dairy farming and whether there are differences in society based on perceived risks and opportunities of digitalization in dairy farming and acceptance. To this end, an online-based study was conducted with a total of 1007 citizens in Germany. Overall, the respondents in this study suspect that the use of robots in dairy farming is associated with various risks but also with opportunities for society and for farmers in particular. However, these attitudes are quite heterogeneous. Four clusters could be identified: "proponents of robots", "indifferent citizens", "skeptical citizens", and "critical supporters of robots". Proponents of robots see only opportunities and little risks, whereas the critical citizens perceive not only opportunities but also many risks of using robots in dairy farming. The indifferent citizens show a rather indifferent attitude, in contrast to the skeptical citizens, who reject the opportunities at the societal level, while they agree with the opportunities of robots for farmers. This research contributes to understanding societal attitudinal acceptance and highlights differences in society that can help inform future decisions about the development and adoption of robots in dairy farming. People receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) endure long phases of therapy and immobility, which diminish their physical activity (PA) level leading to physical deconditioning. One of the reasons is a lack of clarity on the part of those who work in oncology clinical settings of their role in assessing, advising, and referring patients to exercise. Therefore, our study investigates reported physical activity counseling behavior of health care professionals (HCPs) and the patient perspective on this topic. Physicians (N = 52), nurses (N = 52) physical therapists (N = 26), and patients receiving HSCT (N = 62) participated in a nationwide cross-sectional online-survey. Patients' preferred source of information concerning PA was determined. We examined HCPs self-assessed PA counseling behavior and patients' PA recall by assessing the use of the 5As (Ask, Advice, Agree, Assist, Arrange). Analysis of survey responses was descriptive. Univariate multinomial logistic regression examined whether sociodemographic factors and patient characteristics influence the response behavior. Physicians and PA specialists were patients' preferred source of information regarding PA. A large discrepancy between HCPs' perception and the degree to which HSCT patients recall advice became apparent; profound counseling steps like making referrals were less often recalled in our patient sample. Inactive patients reported to receive less basic PA counseling by physicians. Future research should identify the requirements to increase patients' recall concerning PA counseling in the setting of HSCT. Background: Although the majority of medical students in Germany pursue a doctorate, only a portion of them receive a standardized scientific training, which is reflected in the quality issues seen in medical doctoral theses. The course Medical Dissertation Basics was conceptualized and scientifically monitored in order to support medical doctoral students on the one hand and to improve the quality of their scientific work on the other. Methodology: The course consists of three modules. Module I, which is an introductory module, covers time and writing management and addresses how to approach literature and the principles of scientific work as well as the chapters required in a dissertation and the dissertation presentation and defense. In the practical module II, doctoral students write sections of their dissertation chapters and receive feedback via peer and expert reviews. Module III includes training on dissertation presentations and their defense. For objective analysis purposes, a multiple-choice test was administered before and after module I. Medical students from semesters 2 to 6 served as a control group. Questionnaires were used to subjectively analyze the training and support functions of modules I-III. Results: High participation rates and the fact that the modules were taught numerous times show that doctoral students accept the courses. The objective analysis of module I showed a highly significant knowledge acquisition of the course group (N=55) in contrast to the control group (N=34). The doctoral students rated the course modules I-III with grades between 1.0 and 1.25 (grade A+/A; N=20-65 SD=0-0.44), felt well supported and estimated their learning success as high. Conclusion: The study indicates knowledge acquisition in module I and a high doctoral student satisfaction with all modules. For an objective analysis of modules II-III, a comparison of completed doctoral theses (course participants vs. non-participants) would be appropriate but would only make sense in a few years. An improved moveable in vacuo XUV fluorescence detection system was employed for the laser cooling of bunched relativistic (β = 0.47) carbon ions at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) of GSI Helmholtzzentrum Darmstadt, Germany. Strongly Doppler boosted XUV fluorescence (∼90 nm) was emitted from the ions in a forward light cone after laser excitation of the 2s–2p transition (∼155 nm) by a new tunable pulsed UV laser system (257 nm). It was shown that the detected fluorescence strongly depends on the position of the detector around the bunched ion beam and on the delay (∼ns) between the ion bunches and the laser pulses. In addition, the fluorescence information could be directly combined with the revolution frequencies of the ions (and their longitudinal momentum spread), which were recorded using the Schottky resonator at the ESR. These fluorescence detection features are required for future laser cooling experiments at highly relativistic energies (up to γ ∼ 13) and high intensities (up to 10 11 particles) of ion beams in the new heavy ion synchrotron SIS100 at FAIR. Background: Though evidence on the detrimental impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in nursing homes is vast, research focusing on general practitioners' (GP) care during the pandemic in nursing homes is still scarce. Methods: A retrospective online survey among 1,010 nursing home managers in Germany was conducted during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic between November 2020 and February 2021. Associations between perceived deficits in GP care (routine and acute visits) and both general and COVID-19-related characteristics of nursing homes were analysed using multiple logistic regression analyses. Results: The majority of nursing home managers reported no deficits in GP care (routine visits, 84.3%; acute visits, 92.9%). Logistic regression analyses revealed that deficits in GP care (routine visits) were significantly associated with visiting restrictions for GPs and nursing home size. Small nursing homes (1–50 residents) were significantly more likely to report deficits in GP care (routine visits) compared to medium (51–100 residents) and large nursing homes (> 100 residents). Further, deficits in GP care (acute visits) were significantly associated with dementia as a focus of care and the burden of insufficient testing for SARS-CoV-2 among residents. Moreover, visiting restrictions for GPs were significantly associated with dementia as the focus of care and the COVID-19 incidence at the federal state level. Finally, COVID-19 cases in nursing homes were significantly associated with size of nursing homes, COVID-19-incidence on the federal state level and the burden of insufficient testing capacities for SARS-CoV-2 among residents. Conclusion: We found structural factors associated with GP care deficits during the pandemic. New concepts for GP care should be implemented in pandemic preparedness plans to ensure high quality, consistent, and reliable GP care as well as effective infection prevention measures in nursing homes. Background: Overall, 55% of the German population suffers from primary episodic headaches according to recent studies. Inadequate management of headache disorders is a significant medical problem. The prevalence of medication overuse headache (MOH) is about 1% with an estimated number of 800,000 people in Germany. Medication overuse (MO) and MOH are usually managed through a complex process of medication withdrawal and initiating of prophylaxis. However, patients who were successfully treated for MO or MOH have a high relapse rate in the following 2 years. Previously, continued monitoring of self-reported medication intake demonstrated lower relapse rates. The prevalence and burden of MO and MOH are high, and effective strategies to prevent the development of a relapse into MOH or de novo MOH are still missing. Therefore, the MOH trial was designed to assess the effects of combining self-reported medication intake with daily monitoring of the entered data and a personalized patient-specific medication intake feedback system in an easy-accessible app-based platform in order to prevent the development and relapse of MO(H).Methods: The MOH trial is a randomized, controlled, parallel, multicenter, prospective trial. A total of 624 migraine patients with frequent migraine attacks and 336 patients who underwent treatment for MO(H) will be randomly allocated to use either a customized app with or without individual feedback regarding their self-reported medication intake for 12 months. The primary outcome will be the proportion of patients developing MO or MOH for at least 3 consecutive months between baseline and end of study visits.Discussion: This trial will assess the effects of providing patients with feedback regarding their self-reported use of migraine medications and migraine days using a mobile software on the development or prevention of MO(H). We hypothesize that the development of MO(H) in patients with frequent episodic migraine (EM) or chronic migraine (CM) and relapse after treatment of MO(H) can be reduced by a feedback system. If this trial proves that using an app with specific and unspecific messaging to the patient is successful, this method, which is now investigated mainly in specialized headache centers, could later be extended to primary care, thus providing benefits for a broader patient group.Trial Registration: German Clinical Trials Register DRKS00025961 . According to the personalization principle, addressing learners by means of a personalized compared to a nonpersonalized message can foster learning. Interestingly, though, a recent study found that the personalization principle can invert for aversive contents. The present study investigated whether the negative effect of a personalized message for an aversive content can be compensated when learners are in a happy mood. It was hypothesized that the negative effect of a personalized compared to a nonpersonalized message would only be observable for participants in a sad mood, while for participants in a happy mood a personalized message should be beneficial. A 2 × 2 between‐subject design with mood (happy vs. sad) and personalization (personalized vs. nonpersonalized message) was used (N = 125 University students). Mood was experimentally varied prior to learning. Learning outcomes were measured by a retention and a transfer test. Results were essentially in line with the assumption: For participants in the sad mood condition, a negative effect of a personalized message was observable for retention and transfer. For participants in the happy mood condition, a positive effect of personalized message was observable for retention, but no effect for transfer. Note that the manipulation check measure for the mood induction procedure did not detect differences between conditions; this may be due to a shortcoming of the used measure (as indicated by an additional evaluation study). The study emphasizes the importance to consider the inherent emotional content of a topic, such as its aversive nature, since the emotional content of a topic can be a boundary condition for design principles in multimedia learning. The study also highlights the complex interplay of externally induced and inherently arising emotions. Objectives: This study sought to validate the performance of the VT‐LVAD risk model in predicting late ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) in patients after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. Background: The need for implantable cardioverter‐defibrillator (ICD)‐implantation in LVAD recipients is not well studied. A better selection of the patients with high risk for late VAs could lead to a more targeted ICD‐implantation or replacement. Methods: The study evaluated the performance of the VT‐LVAD prognostic score (VAs prior LVAD, no ACE‐inhibitor in medication, heart failure duration > 12 months, early VAs post‐LVAD implantation, atrial fibrillation prior LVAD, idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy) for the endpoint of the occurrence of late VAs in 357 LVAD patients in Heart Centre of Leipzig. Results: From the initial 460 patients, 357 (age: 58 ± 10 years; left ventricular ejection fraction: 20 ± 6%; HeartWare: 50%; HeartMate III: 42%) were assigned to four risk groups according to their VT‐LVAD score varying from low risk to very high risk. After 25 months, late VAs occurred in 130 patients. The VT‐LVAD score was an independent predictor of late VAs (multivariate analysis; p = <.001; goodness‐of‐tip p =.347; odds ratio: 4.8). While there was no statistically significant difference between the low‐ and intermediate‐risk group, risk stratification for patients with high risk and very high risk performed more accurately (pairwise comparison p =.005 and p <.001, respectively). Conclusions: The VT‐LVAD score predicted accurately the occurrence of late VAs in high‐risk LVAD recipients in a large external cohort of LVAD recipients supporting its utility for more targeted ICD implantations. Abstract Static pictures have an informational disadvantage for dynamic processes compared to animations. It was investigated whether this disadvantage can be compensated by prompting learners to process the specific dynamic information. It was assumed that this processing would lead to a longer lasting knowledge representation. A 2 x 2 x 2 between-subject design with visualization format (static picture vs. animation), prompt (present vs. absent) and time of testing (immediate vs. after one week) was utilized (N = 263). Participants performed better on test questions about the dynamic information after learning with the animation compared to the static picture. Prompting learners led to higher perceived difficulty, less overconfidence and better performance in a factual knowledge test addressing the prompted information. The quality of the answers to the prompts mediated the knowledge differences between visualization conditions. However, prompts did not compensate for the informational disadvantage of static pictures, irrespective of time of testing. Aim: Showjumping is one of the sporting activities with a high injury risk. Unpredictable behaviour of the horse, considerable speed and the height of the rider in the saddle make this sport to one of the most dangerous, with the highest risk of injury and the highest mortality rate per competitor. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of dental trauma, the wearing of protective gear such as helmet, back protector and mouthguard as well as the knowledge of primary care after dental trauma.Material and Methods: Within the framework of this study, 608 female and male showjumpers from Switzerland, France and Germany were questioned in a personal interview consisting of 14 questions about general injuries, dental injuries and the usage of protective gear. The competitors were subdivided into different categories according to amateur or professional level, gender and age.Results: Of the 608 competitors, 189 (31.1%) had witnessed an accident involving tooth injury and 91 (15.0%) had suffered one themselves. The prevalence of dental trauma rose with increasing age and more riding experience. A total of 436 (71.1%) of the competitors were familiar with mouthguards, of which only three owned one. The main reasons for not wearing a mouthguard were both doubtful necessity (22.5%) and a generally low acceptance among the riders (26.3%). Less than half of the competitors (44.4%) knew that an avulsed tooth can be replanted and only 4.1% had knowledge about the existence of a tooth rescue box.Conclusion: The results of this study show that in equestrian sports still little is known about dental trauma and protective measures. There is currently much debate surrounding the housing systems for dairy cattle. Large farms, which represent a growing share of the dairy farms, prefer indoor housing systems whereas smaller farms concentrate on low-input systems by giving extended pasture access to milk cows. A consumer survey from 2013 with 1,009 German consumers dealt with consumers' attitudes towards outdoor and indoor systems as well as quality aspects of food. A factor and a cluster analysis are used to reduce the complexity and identify different consumer clusters. The results give recommendations for farmers, constructors of animal sheds, agricultural technology and the processing dairy industry concerning strategic decisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Shorter distances from coronary ostia to the calcified aortic valve may result in occlusion with potential infarction during transcatheter aortic valve implantation. We hypothesized that preoperative CT-scan measurements might predict coronary occlusion. Methods: Distances from the coronary ostia to the calcified aortic valve were measured during open heart aortic valve replacement in 60 consecutive patients. Distances were compared to preoperative CT-scan measurements evaluating distance of the coronary ostia as well in = 15). Results: The distances of the lower lip of the left and the right coronary artery ostia measured from the aortic annulus were 14.7 ± 3.9 mm and 13.4 ± 4.0 mm, respectively. The left, right and noncoronary cusp heights were 13.9 ± 2.5 mm, 12.8 ± 3.0 mm and 13.3 ± 3.1 mm, respectively. Coronary ostia topography indicated variations from the middle to the noncoronary commissure in 40% for the left and 63% for the right coronary ostium. CT-scan based measurements resulted in a distance of 12.8 ± 3.5 mm for the left and 13.9 ± 4.0 mm for the right coronary ostium, compared to 14.2 ± 4.2 mm and 13.5 ± 4.3 mm measured intraoperatively. A mild correlation between both measurements could be observed (r = 0.374, P= 0.188, left and r = 0.46, P= 0.09, n = 15). Conclusions: CT-scan-based measurements differed from the intraoperative measurements, however preoperative CT-scan evaluation may be a useful tool to identify patients with short distance of coronaries. Abstract: A new arthropod from the Lower Devonian Hunsrück Slate is described on the basis of four specimens. The body of Captopodus poschmanni comprises a head, a trunk with an anal portion. The high number of trunk appendages (≥66 segments) is unusual. The function of one pair of cupola-like structures of the head shield is unclear. The presence of large grasping appendages in the head superficially resembles the ‘short great appendages’ of other euarthropods and grasping appendages of thylacocephalans. The phylogenetic position of the arthropod cannot be determined in detail, though several morphological aspects indicate a phylogenetic position as a stem lineage representative of the Euarthropoda, the morphology of the trunk appendages seem to indicate a more advanced phylogenetic position. This new taxon underlines the exceptional diversity of arthropods within the Hunsrück Slate in comparison to other Devonian fossil sites and highlights the significance of the Hunsrück Slate for the evolution of early arthropods. In this study we investigate pollen and oxygen isotopes of moss cellulose from the peat bog ‘Dürres Maar’ in the Eifel low mountain range, Germany (450 m a.s.l.) to quantitatively infer mid-Holocene climate change for the period between ~7000 and 3800 cal. BP. Pollen was analysed on the same samples from which Sphagnum leaves were isolated to extract cellulose for the determination of its oxygen isotope composition (δ18OSphagnum). To quantitatively estimate January and July temperature and annual precipitation from the pollen data, we applied a probabilistic indicator taxa method (‘pdf-method’). The pollen-based reconstructions indicate July temperatures ~1°C higher around 6000 cal. BP than after ~5500 cal. BP, which is consistent with a ~1‰ decrease in δ18OSphagnum during the same period. While the pollen-based climate reconstructions indicate little variability in summer temperature after ~5500 cal. BP, winter temperature shows several pronounced cold excursions of ~2–4°C in this period, which was likely accompanied by changes in precipitation patterns. Test reconstructions leaving out specific taxa indicate that not only larger climate trends, but also relatively small-scale climate variability can robustly be reconstructed with the pdf-method. This is of particular importance for reliable reconstructions of climate variability not only during the Holocene, but also in former interglacials, for which archives are rare and pollen is often the only suitable proxy in terrestrial records. The stable isotope values agree with the reconstructions based on pollen for the time between ~4500 and 3500 cal. BP, but not for the period before 4500 cal. BP. Palaeoscorpius devonicus Lehmann, 1944 is known from only a single specimen, found in the Eschenbach Pit near Bundenbach in the Lower Devonian Hunsrück Slate of Germany. It is a key fossil, having been interpreted both as the most basal member of the Scorpiones and as one of the order's most likely candidates for an aquatic mode of life. Prepared both ventrally and dorsally, some aspects of its morphology remain problematic. Here, with the aid of new techniques, including computed tomography, we present a re-investigation of this scorpion's anatomy and a new reconstruction, with a particular focus on the species' original habitat. On the basis of the environmental interpretation of the Hunsrück Slate and the completeness of the specimen, previous authors concluded that P. devonicus was marine, but none offered convincing morphological evidence. Recent studies of the deposit's environment suggest that the Hunsrück Sea was part of an intrashelf basin, relatively close to the coastline, and fossils of land plants show that terrestrial wash-in occasionally occurred. Our revised interpretation of the fossil's morphology demonstrates that the scorpion was most probably terrestrial. Internal mesosomal organs are interpreted as book lungs, but other terrestrial adaptations are lacking. The absence of both coxapophyses and gnathobases makes determining the scorpion's feeding mechanism difficult. Interpreting the scorpion's character states within a phylogenetic framework, especially the possible presence of book lungs, implies either that the plesiomorphic position of P. devonicus is no longer supported or that the development of book lungs had already taken place early in the scorpion lineage. This paper presents a high resolution reconstruction of local growing season temperature (GST) anomalies at Dürres Maar, Germany, spanning the last two millennia. The GST anomalies were derived from a stable carbon isotope time series of cellulose chemically extracted from Sphagnum leaves (δ13Ccellulose) separated from a kettle-hole peat deposit of several metres thickness. The temperature reconstruction is based on the Sphagnum δ13Ccellulose/temperature dependency observed in calibration studies. Reconstructed GST anomalies show considerable centennial and decadal scale variability. A cold and presumably wet phase with below-average temperature is reconstructed between the 4th and 7th century AD which is in accordance with the so called European Migration Period, marking the transition from the Late Roman Period to the Early Middle Ages. At High Medieval Times, the amplitude in the reconstructed temperature variability is most likely overestimated; nevertheless, above-average temperatures are obvious during this time span, which are followed by a temperature decrease. On the contrary, a pronounced Late Roman Climate Optimum, often described as similarly warm or even warmer as medieval times, could not be detected. The temperature signal of the Little Ice Age (LIA) is not preserved in Dürres Maar due to considerable peat cutting that takes place in the first half of the 19th century. The local GST anomalies show a remarkable agreement to northern hemispheric temperature reconstructions based on tree-ring datasets and are also in accordance with climate reconstructions on the basis of lake sediments, glacier advances and retreats, and historical datasets. Most notably, e.g., during the Early Middle Ages and at High Medieval Times, temperatures were neither low nor high in general. Rather high frequency temperature variability with multiple narrow intervals of below- and above-average temperatures at maximum lasting a few decades are reconstructed. Especially the agreements between our estimated GST anomalies and temperature reconstructions derived from tree-ring chronologies indicate the great potential of Sphagnum δ13Ccellulose time series from peat deposits for palaeoclimate research. This is particularly the case, given that a quantitative δ13Ccellulose/temperature relationship has been found for several Sphagnum species. Although the time resolution of Sphagnum δ13Ccellulose datasets certainly wouldn't reach the annual resolution of tree-ring data, reconstructions of past temperature variability on the basis of this proxy hold one particular advantage: often due to relatively high peat accumulation rates, especially in kettle-hole bogs accumulated on temperate latitudes over periods of up to several millennia, they allow extending temperature reconstructions based on tree-ring series into the past to enhance our knowledge of natural climate variability during the Holocene. We present preparatory measurements for an improved test of time dilation at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI in Darmstadt. A unique combination of particle accelerator experiments and laser spectroscopy is used to perform this test with the highest precision. 7Li+ ions are accelerated to 34% of the speed of light at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung and stored in the experimental storage ring. The forward and backward Doppler shifts of an electric dipole transition of these ions are measured with laser spectroscopy techniques. From these Doppler shifts, both the ion velocity β = ν/c and the time dilation factor [IMG] can be derived for testing Special Relativity. Two laser systems have been developed to drive the 3S1→3P2 transition in 7Li+. Moreover, a detector system composed of photomultipliers, both to monitor the exact laser ion beam overlap as well as to optimize fluorescence detection, has been set up and tested. We investigate optical-optical double-resonance spectroscopy on a closed Λ-type three-level system to overcome Doppler broadening. A residual, broadened fluorescence background caused by velocity-changing processes in the ion beam is identified, and a background subtraction scheme implemented. At the present stage the experimental sensitivity, although already comparable with previous measurements on slower ion beams at the TSR storage ring that led to [IMG] < 8.4 × 10-8, suffer from a poor signal-to-noise ratio. Modifications of the ion source as well as the detection system are discussed that promise to improve the sensitivity by one order of magnitude. Abstract: Middle Pleistocene warm periods are particularly useful for comparison with our present warm period. One of them, Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11, has been considered a potential analogue for the Holocene, whereas older interglacials, e.g. MIS 13, are distinctly different. However, terrestrial Middle Pleistocene sites, other than the Holsteinian, and quantitative climate reconstructions for this period are very rare in Europe. A unique terrestrial site in North Central Europe is known from Bilshausen, Germany. The sediments are varved and indicate that this interglacial lasted ∼25,000 years, more than twice as long as the Holocene so far. The warm period probably correlates to MIS 11, or possibly to MIS 13. A new palynological investigation with large pollen counts is presented which forms the basis for quantitative temperature reconstructions based on the probabilistic indicator taxa approach (the so-called pdf-method). The range of tree species that formed the vegetation during the Bilshausen warm period is reminiscent of the Holocene, but the vegetational as well as the reconstructed climatic development shows distinct differences. No pronounced initial successional phase is recorded in the pollen stratigraphy from Bilshausen. In addition, a mesocratic or optimum phase of forest development as in the Holocene is unclear in the Bilshausen sequence. Reconstructed temperature values are several °C lower than Holocene temperatures for most of the Bilshausen interglacial. Only for several millennia in the late phase of the Bilshausen interglacial were July temperatures higher than the Holocene July temperatures. Seasonality was much stronger during the Bilshausen interglacial and the temperature trends differ between the two interglacials. Likely reasons for the pronounced differences are, on one hand, global temperature, insolation changes and atmospheric circulation. On the other hand, more regional factors such as the configuration of the North Sea basin may also be responsible for the colder winter temperatures and stronger seasonality during the Bilshausen interglacial compared to the Holocene. Reliable absolute dating of the Bilshausen interglacial is needed, which would allow a more detailed evaluation of the forcing factors that determined the climate during the Bilshausen interglacial. At the 30th of June 1934 („Röhm-Putsch") the Nazi leaders also attempted to kill the "Fememörder" Paul Schulz, although they had stylized him as a hero only several years before. After a startling criminal case in 1927, in which Paul Schulz had been sentenced to death due to the murder of "betrayers" in the "Schwarze Reichswehr" he was admitted -- prior to his death -- to a specific cult, which the Nazi "movement" built around its "dead heroes". But in 1930 he was amnestied and had to be (re)integrated into the Nazi party -- as a living "dead hero". This paper investigates the Schulz-myth, which -- from that incident on -- evolved into a remarkable life on its own, endangering the national socialists and their concept of "martyrs". Two aspects are in the focus of this investigation: (1) The "Feme-prozesse" and the questions of who had an iconical (1927) and political (1934) interest in the corpse; furthermore the reasons behind this interest. (2) The characteristics of that iconification of Schulz intended by the Nazi propaganda as well as the problems evolving due to Schulz's survival after 1930 -- finally ending in the decision to liquidate both, myth and personality. Lakes Holzmaar and Meerfelder Maar are located in the Westeifel Volcanic Field less than 10 km apart. Both maar lakes are well known for their annually laminated (varved) sediments covering the past 15 000 years. Here, we focus on reconstructing the history of Holocene vegetation, human impact and climate using high-resolution pollen data. Detailed correlation between the two records using palynologically defined tie-points provides for the first time a test of the precision of the individual varve chronologies. The high-resolution pollen records of both Holzmaar and Meerfelder Maar show continuous natural successions of vegetation during the early and mid-Holocene controlled by the development of soil, climate, immigration and competitive expansion of thermophilous tree species. From 6500 varve yr BP onwards, human impact became an increasingly more important factor. Given the high chronological precision of both records, regional similarities, but also local differences of anthropogenically influenced vegetation changes, can be recognized. The reconstructed July temperature between 8500 and 5000 varve yr BP is around 1 °C higher than today, most likely in response to higher summer insolation related to orbital forcing. High variability of reconstructed July and January temperatures as well as annual precipitation around 5000 varve yr BP is a prominent climatic signal. Abstract: To investigate the potential of stable isotopes of Sphagnum peat deposits for palaeoclimate research and to inform sampling strategies, we present results from a study of selected Sphagnum plant constituents. We report a combined stable carbon and oxygen isotope record of cellulose separately extracted from Sphagnum branches and stem sections manually sampled from a ∼4000 year old peat, deposited in a small dry maar crater located in the Westeifel Volcanic Field, Germany. We have determined the species composition of each individual sample of Sphagnum branches to address the sensitivity of the stable isotope records to potential changes in Sphagnum assemblages. The youngest approximately 3000 years old peat section consists of scarcely decomposed Sphagnum plant material. From the bog''s surface to a depth of ∼60 cm the predominant species is Sphagnum magellanicum. Between ∼60 and ∼550 cm the peat predominantly consists of Sphagnum capillifolium var. rubellum. At greater depths the decomposition status increases, species identification is, however, solely achievable if the record under examination consists of moderately decomposed peat. The stable carbon and oxygen isotope values of cellulose from Sphagnum stem sections are significantly lighter than those of the branches. Both isotopic offsets between the different plant compounds exhibit a strong degree of correlation, are statistically highly significant and observable down-core. The stable carbon isotope offset averages to 1.5‰, however, presumably decreases with increasing age of the plant material. In contrast, the averaged oxygen isotope offset of 0.9‰ is consistent in time. Our results imply that if no differentiation into Sphagnum branches and stem sections prior to stable isotope analyses is possible, erroneous interpretations of the isotope records are likely, since down-core changes in the ratio of branches to stem sections in the peat profile are most likely. This also implies that the removal of all non-Sphagnum plants or plant fragments is insufficient to retrieve stable isotope signals from peat deposits exclusively reflecting palaeo-environmental conditions. Even isotopic records from bulk Sphagnum cellulose comprise of two different signals: firstly, an environmental signal based on the plant response to external controls. This signal is, however, masked by a second plant physiological signal originating from the isotopic offset between branches and stem sections. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: An ad hoc peer-review committee was jointly appointed by Drug Authorities and Industry in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in 1999/2000 to review the evidence for a causal relation between phenacetin-free analgesics and nephropathy. The committee found the evidence as inconclusive and requested a new case-control study of adequate design. Methods: We performed a population-based case-control study with incident cases of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) under the age of 50 years and four age and sex-matched neighborhood controls in 170 dialysis centers (153 in Germany, and 17 in Austria) from January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2004. Data on lifetime medical history, risk factors, treatment, job exposure and intake of analgesics were obtained in a standardized face-to-face interview using memory aids to enhance accuracy. Study design, study performance, analysis plan, and study report were approved by an independent international advisory committee and by the Drug Authorities involved. Unconditional logistic regression analyses were performed. Results: The analysis included 907 cases and 3,622 controls who had never used phenacetincontaining analgesics in their lifetime. The use of high cumulative lifetime dose (3rd tertile) of analgesics in the period up to five years before dialysis was not associated with later ESRD. Adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were 0.8 (0.7 - 1.0) and 1.0 (0.8 - 1.3) for evercompared with no or low use and high use compared with low use, respectively. The same results were found for all analgesics and for mono-, and combination preparations with and without caffeine. No increased risk was shown in analyses stratifying for dose and duration. Dose-response analyses showed that analgesic use was not associated with an increased risk for ESRD up to 3.5 kg cumulative lifetime dose (98 % of the cases with ESRD). While the large subgroup of users with a lifetime dose up to 0.5 kg (278 cases and 1365 controls) showed a significantly decreased risk, a tiny subgroup of extreme users with over 3.5 kg lifetime use (19 cases and 11 controls) showed a significant risk increase. The detailed evaluation of 22 cases and 19 controls with over 2.5 kg lifetime use recommended by the regulatory advisors showed an impressive excess of other conditions than analgesics triggering the evolution of ESRD in cases compared with controls. Conclusion: We found no clinically meaningful evidence for an increased risk of ESRD associated with use of phenacetin-free analgesics in single or combined formulation. The apparent risk increase shown in a small subgroup with extreme lifetime dose of analgesics is most likely an indirect, non-causal association. This hypothesis, however, cannot be confirmed or refuted within our case-control study. Overall, our results lend support to the mounting evidence that phenacetin-free analgesics do not induce ESRD and that the notion of "analgesic nephropathy" needs to be re-evaluated. This article discusses the German-Danish experience on national minorities and cross-border cooperation in their borderlands. The Danish-German region in an international context usually is referred to as Schleswig. The Danish part of the region is named Sønderjylland, whereas the German is called "Landesteil Schleswig" or South Schleswig to emphasize that Schleswig is divided between Denmark and Germany. The recognition of the national minorities in the borderlands is based on the principle of the individual's free and unrestricted affiliation with the groups. This affiliation may neither be challenged nor disputed by the authorities. Although the expert committee of the Council of Europe under the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities in 2002 urged the German government to compile more reliable statistic information on the national minorities, both Germany's government and the Danish minority refused this recommendation, pointing to the fact that minorities were persecut- ed during the years 1933-1945 based on registers, and emphasizing the principle of voluntary identification.

Swinepox virus (SWPV) is a globally distributed swine pathogen that causes sporadic cases of an acute poxvirus infection in domesticated pigs, characterized by the development of a pathognomonic proliferative dermatitis and secondary ulcerations. More severe disease with higher levels of morbidity and mortality is observed in congenitally SWPV-infected neonatal piglets. In this study, we investigated the evolutionary origins of SWPV strains isolated from domestic pigs and wild boar. Analysis of whole genome sequences of SWPV showed that at least two different virus strains are currently circulating in Germany. These were more closely related to a previously characterized North American SWPV strain than to a more recent Indian SWPV strain and showed a variation in the SWPV-specific genome region. A single nucleotide deletion in the wild boar (wb) SWPV strain leads to the fusion of the SPV019 and SPV020 open reading frames (ORFs) and encodes a new hypothetical 113 aa protein (SPVwb020-019). In addition, the domestic pig (dp) SWPV genome contained a novel ORF downstream of SPVdp020, which encodes a new hypothetical 71aa protein (SPVdp020a). In summary, we show that SWPV strains with altered coding capacity in the SWPV specific genome region are circulating in domestic pig and wild boar populations in Germany. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: It was the aim of the quality control program of the randomized trial HIT '91 (intensive chemotherapy before irradiation versus maintenance chemotherapy after irradiation) to assess prospectively the quality of neuroaxis irradiation with respect to the protocol guidelines and to evaluate acute toxicity with respect to treatment arm.Patients, Materials and Methods: Data of 134 patients undergoing irradiation of the craniospinal axis were available. Positioning aids, shielding techniques, treatment machines, choice of energy, total dose and fractionation were evaluated. A total of 651 simulation and verification films were analyzed to assess the coverage of the clinical target volume (whole brain, posterior fossa, sacral nerve roots) and deviations of field alignment between simulation and verification of first treatment. Field matching between whole brain and adjacent cranial spinal fields was analyzed with respect to site and width of junction. Acute maximal side effects were evaluated according to a modified WHO score for neurotoxicity, infections, skin, mucosa and myelotoxicity.Results: In 91.3% of patients contemporary positioning aids and individualized shielding techniques were used to assure a reproducible treatment. In 98 patients (73.1%) linear accelerators and in 36 patients (26.8%) Cobalt machines were used. Single and total dose were administered according to the protocol guidelines in more than 90% of patients. In 20.2% of patients the cribriform plate, in 1.4% the middle cranial fossa and in 21.1% the posterior fossa and in 4.5% the 2nd sacral segment were incompletely encompassed by the treatment portals. Ninety-five percent of deviations of field alignment were less than 13.0 mm (whole brain) and 12 mm (cranial spinal field) with a random error between 4.9 and 7.6 mm (whole brain) and 6.9 mm and 9.9 mm (spinal canal), respectively. In 77.5% of patients the junctions between whole brain and cranial spinal fields were placed without a gap. A gap between 5 and 10 mm was left in 15 patients (18.7%), exceeding 10 mm in 3 patients. Acute neurotoxicity and skin reactions were mild, the rate of infections was low in both treatment arms. However, myelotoxicity resulted in interruptions of radiotherapy in 31.9% after intensive chemotherapy as compared to 20.0% without preceding chemotherapy.Conclusions: In the HIT '91 trial a precise radiotherapy of craniospinal axis has been performed in the majority of patients. Our findings indicate that the high quality is possibly an important contributing factor for the therapeutic outcome. However, preceding intensive chemotherapy caused marked toxicity of subsequent irradiation leading to a high rate of interruptions. Our database is subject to a future analysis of recurrences. Two different ventilation techniques were compared in a seven-centre, randomised trial with 181 preterm infants up to and including 32 completed weeks gestational age, who needed mechanical ventilation because of lung disease of any type. Technique A used a constant rate (60 cycles/min), inspiratory time (IT) (0.33s) and inspiratory: expiratory ratio (I:E) (1:2). The tidal and minute volume was only changed by varying peak inspiratory pressure until weaning via continuous positive airway pressure. Technique B used a lower rate (30 cycles/min) with longer IT (1.0 s). The I:E ratio could be changed from 1:1 to 2:1 in case of hypoxaemia. Chest X-rays taken at fixed intervals were evaluated by a paediatric radiologist and a neonatologist unaware of the type of ventilation used in the patients. A reduction of at least 20% in extra-alveolar air leakage (EAL) or death prior to EAL was supposed in infants ventilated by method A. A sequential design was used to test this hypothesis. The null hypothesis was rejected (P = 0.05) when the 22nd untied pair was completed. The largest reduction in EAL (-55%) was observed in the subgroup 31-32 weeks of gestation and none in the most immature group (< 28 weeks). We conclude that in preterm infants requiring mechanical ventilation for any reason of lung insufficiency, ventilation at 60 cycles/min and short IT (0.33 s) significantly reduces EAL or prior death compared with 30 cycles/min and a longer IT of 1 s. We speculate that a further increase in rate and reduction of IT would also lower the risk of barotrauma in the most immature and susceptible infants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Great-appendage arthropods, characterized by a highly modified anterior limb, were previously unknown after the Middle Cambrian. One fossil from the Lower Devonian Hunsrück Slate, Germany, extends the stratigraphic range of these arthropods by ∼100 million years. Schinderhannes bartelsi shows an unusual combination of anomalocaridid and euarthropod characters, including a highly specialized swimming appendage. A cladistic analysis indicates that the new taxon is basal to crown-group euarthropods and that the great-appendage arthrapods are paraphyletic. This new fossil shows that features of the anomalocaridids, including the multisegmanted raptorial appendage and circular plated mouth, persisted long after the initial radiation of the euarthropod [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The inverted classroom approach is characterized by a primary self-study phase for students followed by an on-site, face-to-face teaching phase that is used to deepen the prior acquired knowledge. Obviously, this teaching approach relies on the students preparing before the on-site phase, which in turn requires optimized preparatory material as well as defined working instructions. The major aim of this study, therefore, was to investigate the effect of different preparatory materials and working instructions for the self-study phase of an e-learning-based inverted classroom on the knowledge gained by medical students in biochemistry. Furthermore, we analyzed whether collaborative dyadic learning during the self-study phase is more effective than individual learning with respect to knowledge gain. Methods: The study was performed in a biochemistry seminar for second semester medical students at Ulm University in Germany. This seminar was held using an e-learning-based inverted classroom. A total of 196 students were divided into three homogeneous study groups that differed in terms of the working material and instructions provided for the self-study phase. Knowledge gain was measured by formative tests at the beginning of the on-site phases. Questionnaires were also handed out asking about motivation, interest and learning time in the self-study phases. Results: Students who were told to prepare in collaborating dyads during the self-study phase performed better in formative tests taken at the beginning of on-site phases than learners who were told to prepare individually. The study material that was provided was of minor importance for the differences in formative testing since almost all students prepared for the on-site phases. With the dyadic learning approach, both students benefited from this collaboration, characterized by a higher motivation and interest in the topic, as well as a longer time spent on task. Conclusion: Our study provides strong evidence that the study material, but more importantly the instructions provided for the self-study phase, affect students' knowledge gain in an e-learning-based inverted classroom. Abstract: The paper deals with the activities of the Bergbau-Forschung Coal Petrography Laboratory in Essen (Germany), which, under the influence of Marie-Therese Mackowsky, developed into a stronghold of the industrial application of coal petrology. In 1979, the formerly independent Section for Mineralogy and Petrology was merged with the Chemistry Section. This synergy has widened the research limits and resulted in higher efficiency of projects being carried out within both units. Since 1990, after transforming Bergbau-Forschung into DMT GmbH, a worldwide competition within hard coal and hard coal-based coke markets, together with the switch of the industry towards alternative energy sources, have significantly lowered the importance of the domestic coal mining industry. This in turn resulted in reduction of coal research programs. However, it is stressed that, in spite of transformations of the applied coal petrology experienced during the past 50 years, some achievements are still as applicable as ever. Among them, the method of predicting coke strength using maceral analysis and coal types, published by Mackowsky and Simonis [Mackowsky, M.-Th., Simonis, W., 1969. Die Kennzeichnung von Kokskohlen für die mathematische Beschreibung der Hochtemperaturverkokung im Horizontalkammerofen bei Schüttbetrieb durch Ergebnisse mikroskopischer Analysen. The second part of this paper presents some examples of coal petrography applications, which are still important in carbonization processes. Mackowsky discovered that the pyrolytic components were influencing the coke homogeneity in coke ovens and affected coke quality parameters such as CRI and CSR. These highly graphitic layers and lenses prevent gasification of the inner zones of coke lumps, thus lowering the reactivity of metallurgical coke. Moreover, it also seems possible to predict wall load and maximum internal gas pressure as to prevent coke ovens from damage. Mathematic equations developed especially for the selection of coking coals and evaluation of coal blends for carbonization are also based on petrographic analyses, together with other factors such as bulk density and chamber width of the coke oven. The industry has myriad spray-on, brush-on and scrape-on products to offer, the producers of which claim them to have corrosion- and wear-reducing effects. Until now, pump users have had to take a trial-and-error approach to finding out which, if any, such products actually do help. Now, in order to shed some light on the dark area of coating technology, KSB has conducted an extensive series of pertinent tests at its materials laboratory in Pegnitz, Germany. Objective: To analyze the lifetime incidence of benign gynecological tumors. Study design: The German Cohort Study on Women’s Health was launched in 1998 as historic cohort study with prospective follow up. The study ascertained self-reported information on tumors by calendar time. The incidence of benign gynecological tumors was calculated from the data of the first cohort period. Results: The cohort comprised 396,000 women-years of observation and 1676 benign tumors were observed. This lead to incidence estimates of 27.0, 18.6, and 23.3 per 100,000 women-years of observation for all benign tumors of the uterus, ovary, and breast respectively. Conclusion: In absence of other data, it is reasonable to use incidence rates generated by a large cohort of German women as a best estimate for the population up to 65 years of age.
