This article discusses a short-term study abroad program conducted in Berlin in English for college students. Guided by the academic goals of developing cultural competence, demonstrating cultural communication, and attaining a basic level of cultural literacy, this program, with its pre- and post-program academic components, offers an alternative to "German-language" study abroad programs.

The article focuses on the German artist Cosima von Bonin and the ways in which her artistic experiments expand painting as a field. The article discusses critics such as Dirk von Lowtzow who have observed that von Bonin's art lacks meaning or theme, her early work, which consisted of small objects, installations and photo-based art and the increased amount of textile works she produced through the 2000s. The article goes on to discuss the way in which von Bonin avoids legible commentary as to not "bug" the viewer and the various ways her works can be interpreted.

This essay reports that when essayist Botho Strauss published the enigmatic essay "Goat Song Rising" in the German weekly "Der Spiegel," in February 1993, it caused instant controversy. Strauss was labeled crypto-fascist, subversive and even dangerous. lgnatz Bubis, chairman of the Central Committee of Jews in Germany, suggested that Strauss was an intellectual right-winger and even responsible for increased anti-Semitism and attacks against Jews and synagogues in Germany. Strauss's essay marked a cultural shift in the early 1990s in Germany.
