COMPOSERS , *FLUTE music - Abstract
The article focuses on the flute compositions of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart commissioned by Ferdinand De Jean, a Dutchman who offered Mozart 200 gulden for 3 short, easy concertos and a pair of quartets for the flute. It discusses the difficulty encountered by Mozart in obtaining work after he left the patronage of Count Hieronymus Colloredo in 1777. It presents extracts from letters written by Mozart to his father from Mannheim, Germany regarding the De Jean commission and how it has become a bothersome chore for him. It explains why Mozart stayed in Mannheim despite the indifferent treatment he received from the music community.
