In this article, ambassadors of the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) Open Educational Resources (OER) Advocacy Committee (OERAC) provide a snapshot of regional and global Open Educational Resources (OER)initiatives. This committee has been active since 2017 with membership renewed biannually. The ambassadors work to further OER awareness and understanding, to increase global recognition of OER, and provide policy support for the acceptance and application of OER. This overview highlights national and regional initiatives associated with the UNESCO OER recommendation and the five action areas that include: building capacity and leveraging OER; developing supporting policies; ensuring equity and effectiveness; encouraging sustainable OER model development; and, promoting and facilitating international collaboration. In addition, monitoring and evaluation of the action areas are suggested to be prioritized. This overview is not exhaustive, and much work remains to implement the OER Recommendation at scale, maximize its implementation, connect these recommendations to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), along with the futures of education with a new social contract for education, individuals, and the planet.

Background: The aim was to compare parent and child-reported health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of children born with esophageal atresia (EA) and determine factors that affect the level of parent-child agreement.Methods: We included 63 parent-child dyads of children born with EA aged 8-18 from Germany and Sweden. The generic PedsQL 4.0™ questionnaire and the condition-specific EA QOL questionnaire were used to assess children's HRQOL from parents' and children's perspectives. The PedsQL™ Family Impact Module was used to assess parental HRQOL and Family Functioning.Results: On an individual level, intra-class correlation coefficients indicated strong levels of parent-child agreement (.61-.97). At the group level, the analyses showed no significant differences between the responses of parents and children. When a disagreement occurred, parents were more likely to rate generic HRQOL lower than the children (19-35%) and condition-specific HRQOL higher than the children (17-33%). Findings of the binary logistic regression analyzes showed that the child's age, gender, and country (Germany vs. Sweden) were significant predictors of parent-child agreement in condition-specific HRQOL. We did not identify any significant variables that explain agreement for the generic HRQOL.Conclusion: The parent-child agreement is mostly good, suggesting that parent-reports are a reliable source of information. However, discrepancies may occur and can be explained by the child's age, gender, and country (Sweden vs. Germany). Both perspectives are essential sources for treating EA patients and should not be considered right or wrong. Instead, this information broadens the perspective on pediatric EA patients. Aim:  Despite advances of outcomes of esophageal atresia (EA), knowledge on patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is sparse. Due to the heterogeneity of EA, larger cohorts need to be investigated to ensure reliability of data. Aim was to determine generic HRQoL after EA repair in a Swedish-German cohort.Patients and Methods:  Ethical approval was obtained. A total of 192 patients (2-18 years; 134 Swedish; 58 German) were included. Clinical data were reviewed. EA was classified in "severe" and "mild/moderate." Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 Generic Core Scale (PedsQL 4.0) was used in appropriate versions (2-7 years; 8-18 years; self- [SR] and proxy report [PR]) to determine generic HRQoL.Results:  Swedish and German samples were clinically and demographically comparable. HRQoL was lower in "severe EA" versus "mild/moderate" (2-18 years; total score; PR 85.6 vs. 73.6; p < 0.001) and Gross A versus Gross C type EA (2-7 years; total score; PR 61.0 vs. 79.3; p = 0.035). Total HRQoL was higher in the Swedish versus German sample (2-18 years; total score; PR 82.3 vs. 72.7; p = 0.002). HRQoL was impaired in the German sample versus healthy population (2-18 years; total score; PR 72.7 vs. 82.7; p = 0.001). In German patients (8-18 years), HRQoL was higher in SR versus PR (80.7 vs. 74.7; p = 0.044). Patients' age and presence of VACTERL association or isolated anorectal malformations did not affect HRQoL. Various differences were detected regarding different dimensions of PedsQL 4.0.Conclusion:  In this first international study, we found several differences in perception of generic HRQoL. HRQoL appears to be determined by the type of EA and severity rather than patients' age or the presence of typical associated malformations. Country-specific differences may be culturally dependent, but further investigations are suggested. A condition-specific instrument validated for EA may provide additional insights. Objectives Direct assessment of the patient perspective is necessary to thoroughly understand patients' experiences of disease. We aimed to examine information from children with short stature on their perceived HrQoL within 5 European countries. Methods Patients, identified through clinical databases, were approached by their clinicians according to the inclusion criteria regarding a diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency or idiopathic short stature and age requirements. A focus group methodology was applied in 84 children and 112 parents. Based on a category system, individual statements were allocated to domains. To evaluate the emerging topics, qualitative content analysis was conducted. Domains and respective coding frequencies per category were compared across countries and respondents. Results The highest number of statements produced by the children and parents were related to social (29%) and emotional needs and concerns (28%). In particular, children stressed their experience of social exclusion but also their perception of social support. Regarding emotional needs, they stated mainly the desire to be taller in order to be less teased by peers. National differences were identified, for example, Swedish (22%) and British (16%) children and their parents (Sweden 26%; Britain 23%) stressed physical HrQoL aspects, whereas German children (21%) strongly focused on treatment aspects, mainly the benefit of treatment. Conclusion Comprehensive knowledge of the impact of a chronic condition such as short stature on wellbeing is an important precondition of effective treatment. Because socioemotional topics were rated in all the countries to be most important, interventions aimed at improving HrQoL should target social and emotional responses to short stature. The King George III copy of the Gutenberg Bible, held at the British Library, has been analyzed using Raman spectroscopy to determine the palette of pigments used in the illuminations on this work. The palette is found to comprise cinnabar/vermilion, lead tin yellow (type 1), carbon-based black, azurite, malachite, an organo-copper complex (a "verdigris"), calcium carbonate (chalk), gyp-sum, gold leaf, and basic lead carbonate ("lead white"). This is in agreement with contemporary descriptions of the pigments used for the illuminations. One pigment could not be identified, specifically the organic dark red/purple color used for the foliage. The palette of this copy of the Gutenberg Bible has been compared with those used for six other copies, held at Eton College and Lambeth Palace, England, the Bibliothèque Mazarine and the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and the Staatsbib- liothek zu Berlin and the Niederskchsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek (SUB) Göttingen, Germany. The palettes are shown to be similar to one another, even though the styles of the primary illuminations differ. The two Gutenberg Bibles held in Germany, printed on vellum, have the more expensive palettes, which include lazurite. The SUB Göttingen copy has the most extensive palette with 16 pigment-related materials having been identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of tannic acid as a reagent in histological methods is traced against a background of widespread use in science and technology from times of antiquity. Numerous light microscopic methods involving tannic acid, particularly in conjunction with iron and silver, have been described for a variety of tissue components. In most applications, tannic acid functions as a mordant. Current use is generally restricted to methods based on its affinity for collagen. The most significant histological use of tannic acid in contemporary times is as an adjunct to conventional glutaraldehyde-osmium-heavy metal fixation and staining for ultrastructural studies of tissue structures not normally clearly demonstrated. Tannic acid reacts with various components by mechanisms which are often not fully understood.
