Radio frequency identification (REID) is increasingly coming into use in industry as an alternative to the bar code. For example, keys, books in the library and lift passes are equipped with REID transponders. Also in the clothing branch, the identification of goods by radio signals is growing significantly. Consequently, with the help of the wireless communication capability of transponders, items can be registered through contactiess data transfer without interruption. As a response to the future demand of the textile industry, the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences has developed a textile transponder in cooperation with the clothing manufacturing company van Laack GmbH, Monchengladbach/Germany. This can be integrated by embroidering into the clothing manufacturing process. However, due to the fact that van Laack manufactures high-quality premium garments, the requirements concerning the fineness of the threads and the inconspicuousness of the electronic component in the garment were relatively demanding.
