Introduction: Omni® (B Braun, Melsungen, Germany) is able to run continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH), hemodialysis (CVVHD), and hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF) modes. However, to date, there is no validated protocol to guide the use of Omni® in CVVHDF mode with regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA). Methods: We designed a protocol for CVVHDF-RCA tailored for Omni®. This protocol was tested in patients included in an observational study conducted in our center between January and March 2021. For all study patients, we collected baseline characteristics, laboratory results, CRRT circuit lifespan as well as plasma and effluent samples at 12, 24, 48, and 72 h of CRRT circuit initiation. At each study time point, we computed urea, creatinine, and β2-microglobulin clearance as well as effluent/blood ratios. Data from circuits in CVVHDF-RCA mode are compared with those in standard therapy (CVVHD-RCA) with the same device. Results: We analyzed ten circuits (5 patients) in CVVHDF-RCA mode and 32 (13 patients) in CVVHD-RCA mode. No adverse events related to the therapy were observed. In CVVHDF-RCA mode, median circuit running time was 68 (IQR 8.1) hours versus 46 (IQR 9.0) in CVVHD mode, p = 0.053. Therapy adaptations (dialysate rate and/or blood flow) were required in one (10%) circuit (15.6% in CVVHD mode, p = 0.56). Compared to CVVHD, CVVHDF was able to achieve similar clearance and effluent/blood ratio for urea, creatinine, and β2-microglobulin across the entire duration of circuit lifetime. Conclusion: The proposed protocol for CVVHDF-RCA for Omni® was associated with similar circuit lifetime, number of required adaptations and clearances to standard CVVHD-RCA. Summary: In this study, we show results from ambient noise tomography around the KTB (Kontinentales Tiefbohrprogramm der Bundesrepublik Deutschland), a continental deep drilling site located at the western edge of the Bohemian Massif, within the Variscan belt of Europe. At the KTB site, crustal rocks have been drilled down to 9 km depth. Before the drilling activity started, several active seismic surveys had been performed to explore its surroundings during the 1980s and early 1990s, in the frame of an extensive exploration of the area aimed at unravelling the characteristics of the continental lower crust that is exposed at surface in this location. Despite the exploration campaigns held at and around the KTB drilling site, there are important targets that are worth further investigation; these are related in particular to the obduction of lower crustal units to the surface, and to the mechanism of orogenic processes in general. Here we present a new 3-D shear wave velocity model of the area from cross-correlations of ambient seismic noise. The model is obtained by a unique data set composed of 2 yr of continuous data recorded at nine 3-component temporary stations (installed from July 2012 to July 2014) located on top and around the drilling site, and together with the data from 19 permanent stations throughout the region. This paper is focusing on the upper crustal layers, and we show velocity variations at short scales that correlate well with known geological structures in the region of the KTB site, at the surface and at depth. The PHQ-9 has become a measure of reference in depression research and clinical practice. However, the issue of the PHQ-9's unidimensionality has not been fully elucidated, and the usability of the PHQ-9's total score requires clarification. In this study, we examined the dimensionality, scalability, and monotonicity properties of the PHQ-9 as well as the scale's total-score reliability. We did so based on exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) bifactor analysis and Mokken scale analysis (MSA). We relied on a total of 58,272 participants (63% female; Mage = 43, SDage = 13) from 29 samples involving seven different countries (e.g., Germany, the U.S.) and five different languages (e.g., German, English). We found no concerning deviations from measurement invariance for our ESEM bifactor model, neither across samples nor across sexes, age groups, and languages. The PHQ-9 met the requirements for essential unidimensionality in the pooled sample and across sex-, age-, and language-based subsamples. In each case, the general factor was strong (e.g., factor loadings ranged from 0.725 to 0.893 in the pooled sample) and Omega Hierarchical values exceeded 0.900. The correlations between the general factor and the observed total scores were large (≥0.952). Our MSA, including multilevel MSA, revealed that the PHQ-9's scalability is satisfactory. No monotonicity violation was detected, suggesting that the scale's total score accurately orders respondents on the latent Depression variable. Total-score reliability was good. This study provides robust evidence that the PHQ-9 can be used as a unidimensional measure of depressive symptoms by researchers and practitioners. Public Significance Statement: Because depression is a widespread condition with potentially lethal consequences, assessing depressive symptoms reliably and validly is of critical importance. This study indicates, with an unprecedented level of confidence, that researchers and practitioners are justified in employing the PHQ-9 as a unidimensional measure of depressive symptoms based on the scale's total score. Seismic anisotropy is a unique observational tool for remotely studying deformation and stress within the Earth. Effects of anisotropy can be seen in seismic data; they are due to mineral alignment, fractures or layering. Seismic anisotropy is linked to local stress and strain, allowing modern geophysics to derive geomechanical properties from seismic data for supporting well planning and fracking. For unravelling anisotropic properties of the crust, the teleseismic receiver functions methodology has started to be widely applied recently due to its ability in retrieving the three‐dimensional characteristics of the media sampled by the waves. The applicability of this technique is tested here by a field test carried out around the Kontinental Tiefbohrung site in southeastern Germany. We compare our results to previous investigations of the metamorphic rock pile of the Zone Erbendorf‐Vohenstrauss, drilled down to 9 km depth, which sampled an alternating sequence of paragneiss and amphibolite, in which a strong foliation has been produced by ductile deformation. The application of the receiver functions reveals the presence of two distinct anisotropic layers within the metamorphic rock pile at 0–4 km and below 6 km depth, with up to 8% anisotropy; the depth of these two layers corresponds to the location of mica‐rich paragneiss which show intense foliation, and finally proves the relation between the signal in the receiver functions, rock texture and presence of cracks. We have now the capability of providing insights from passive seismic data on geomechanical properties of the rocks, useful for geological exploration and engineering purposes, which will help influencing expensive drilling decisions thanks to future application of this seismic technique. The aim of this study was to compare the shaping ability of 4 different nickel-titanium systems, considering their variation in alloy treatment, kinematics, and design, used to prepare canals with severe curvature using micro–computed tomographic analysis. Thirty-two mesial roots of mandibular molars with severe curvature were matched based on similar morphologic dimensions and assigned to 4 experimental groups (n = 8) according to the canal preparation: ProTaper Next (PTN; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), Reciproc (RC; VDW GmbH, Munich, Germany), Reciproc Blue (RCB, VDW GmbH), and TRUShape (TRU; Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK) systems. Changes in 2-dimensional (area and perimeter) and 3-dimensional (volume, surface area, and structure model index) morphologic parameters as well as canal transportation were compared among groups using the analysis of variance post hoc Tukey tests with the significance level set at 5%. Preparation significantly increased all analyzed parameters. No statistically significant differences (P >.05) were observed between RC and RCB or between PTN and TRS in any of the analyzed parameters. In the cervical third, RC and RCB presented higher mean increases than PTN and TRU. In the apical third, there were no statistically significant differences (P >.05) among the systems. The instruments of greater taper may promote greater morphologic changes. However, regardless of the number of instruments (multiple or single), the type of movement (rotation or reciprocating), the type of heat treatment of alloys, and the particular characteristics of each instrument (taper and design), the evaluated systems did not result in different dimensional changes and canal transportation in the critical apical area. • There is a lack of studies in the literature regarding root canal anatomy and new generation of instruments with different designs and nickel-titanium alloy heat treatments. • No geometric changes and canal transportation in the apical third were observed in curved canals regardless of the number of instruments, type of movement, type of heat treatment of alloys, and the particular characteristics of each evaluated instrument. Topics discussed include feminism during the 18th century, kinship in late middle ages and women's associations in Leipzig. The symposium featured several historians including Antje J. Gornig, Thomas Krzenck and Sabine Tanz.

Using data from 28 countries in four continents, the present research addresses the question of how basic values may account for political activism. Study 1 ( N = 35,116) analyses data from representative samples in 20 countries that responded to the 21-item version of the Portrait Values Questionnaire ( PVQ-21) in the European Social Survey. Study 2 ( N = 7,773) analyses data from adult samples in six of the same countries ( Finland, Germany, Greece, Israel, Poland, and United Kingdom) and eight other countries ( Australia, Brazil, Chile, Italy, Slovakia, Turkey, Ukraine, and United States) that completed the full 40-item PVQ. Across both studies, political activism relates positively to self-transcendence and openness to change values, especially to universalism and autonomy of thought, a subtype of self-direction. Political activism relates negatively to conservation values, especially to conformity and personal security. National differences in the strength of the associations between individual values and political activism are linked to level of democratization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyses the rhetorical structure of the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) decision in the Germany v Italy case. The author maintains that in all likelihood the ICJ’s decision will exert great influence on future State practice. This is due to a number of different reasons, ranging from the particularly authoritative role that the ICJ enjoys in the epistemic community of international lawyers to the rhetorically persuasive use of the arguments by the Court in a judgment that is perfectly attuned to the Court’s main audience. Indeed, it is a well known principle in rhetoric that the adjustment of an argument to the audience is one of the most powerful tools to ensure adherence to whatever the speaker (or the Court in this case) may say. Between June and September 2010, widespread Italian consumer reports of unusual blue spoilage on fresh dairy products were publicized, resulting in the so-called blue mozzarella event. An inordinately high number of samples from mozzarella and whey cheese products of Italian and German production subsequently tested positive for Pseudomonas fluorescens. The aim of this study was to verify whether a selected P. fluorescens strain was responsible for this apparently unusual event. Molecular characterization of 181 isolated P. fluorescens strains was conducted using a newly optimized pulsed-field gel electrophoresis protocol. Although a high number of pulsotypes was found (132), only four pulsotypes were associated with more than one production plant, and only one German isolate had the same pulsotype as was detected in two Italian plants. This is the only evidence of possible cross-contamination among cheeses from the two countries. The overall results did not support the spread of contamination from German to Italian plants or the presence of one environmental strain that spread in both countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A simple model is proposed, at the macrolevel of variables aggregation, as a support for policy choice making in the control of goods transportation growth by possible alternative modes. The impact of feasible changes in the levying of “carbon tax” can be investigated with the proposed model, as well as the effects of investments in infrastructure and of the coverage of operational costs. Based on some transport externalities, various cost indices are identified and suitably minimized using optimization techniques, so that a quantitative definition of public policies can be derived. As an example, the model is used to evaluate application of alternative policies in Germany. This case study shows that the model system of goods transportation has a slight sensitivity to the public interventions considered. The application of the carbon tax shows significant effects on the increase of fiscal revenues rather than on the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and on the share of road transportation. Reductions in carbon dioxide emissions and in transportation by road are best achieved by higher investment in the infrastructures of alternative modes of transport, together with a reduction in fuel taxation. In this study, we show results from ambient noise tomography at the KTB drilling site, Germany. The Continental Deep Drilling Project, or 'Kontinentales Tiefbohrprogramm der Bundesrepublik Deutschland' (KTB) is at the northwestern edge of the Bohemian Massif and is located on the Variscan belt of Europe. During the KTB project crustal rocks have been drilled down to 9 km depth and several active seismic studies have been performed in the surrounding. Therefore the KTB area is here taken as a sample for testing and verifying the potential resolution of passive seismic techniques. The aim of this study is to present a new shear-wave velocity model of the area while comparing the results to the previous velocity models and hints for anisotropy depicted by former passive and active seismological studies. We use a unique data-set composed of two years of continuous data recorded at nine 3-component temporary stations installed from July 2012 to July 2014 located on top and vicinity of the drilling site. Moreover, we included a number of permanent stations in the region in order to improve the path coverage and density. Cross correlations of ambient noise are computed between the station pairs using all possible combination of three-component data. Dispersion curves of surface waves are extracted in the 0.07 to 3 Hz frequency band and are then inverted to obtain group velocity maps. We present here a new velocity model of the upper crust, which shows that velocity variations at short periods (down to 12 km depth) correlate well with geology of the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
