Pierre Fauchard, considered the father of dentistry, contributed to the development of different fields of dentistry that we know today. However, the contribution of this important individual to the fields of oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial pathology is unknown. This study aimed to identify Pierre Fauchard's contribution to these areas of dentistry. We focused on " Le Chirurgien Dentiste, or Traité des Dents " in both French and English, looking for information about the oral diseases diagnosed and treated by Fauchard. Information on patient history, disease description, treatment applied, and clinical follow-up was collected. A contemporary analysis of the diseases was performed, and the collected data were systematized, reported, and analyzed descriptively, according to the current literature on the addressed topics. Information on conditions such as scurvy, parulides, epulides, oral ulcers, dentoalveolar abscesses, dental alterations, and post-exodontia incidents were elucidated. During the 18th century, France was the leader in the field of dentistry, exemplified by Pierre Fauchard (1678-1761), who was given the title "the father of modern dentistry" for his comprehensive work, Le Chirurgien Dentiste. This paper examines an 18th century dental treatment in a barely 50-year-old male whose body was excavated from Saint Amé's Collegiate Church, Douai, France. This individual had 6 dental restorations, exceptional for that period. All fillings were on the occlusal surfaces of molars and extended at least to the superficial dentin. Panoramic and retro-alveolar radiography confirmed the presence of a radio-opaque filling material, and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and x-ray diffraction analyses demonstrated the exclusive presence of tin in these restorations. A letter to the editor is presented in response to an article, "Pierre Fauchard: the Father of Modern Dentistry," by Lynch O'Sullivan and MacGillycuddy that was published in the volume 201, 2006 issue.

The article reports the discovery of 18th century porcelain dentures with gold springs, belonging to Arthur Richard Dillon, Archbishop of Narbonne, France. The 200-year old teeth were excavated by archaeologists from a grave yard in London. The false teeth set now on display at the Museum of London is said to be a souvenir of perfect fit dentures invented in France in the 1770s.

The professional distinction of "surgeon-dentist," created in France in the 18th century, stimulated dentistry's early advance as a learned profession. By 1841, Pierre-Joachim Lefoulon coined the term "orthodontosie," which was the root of "orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics" as a distinct academic field and a specialty. In 1907, the American Orthodontist became the first scientific journal in the world completely devoted to orthodontics. Its failure after 5 years of publication prompted former editor Martin Dewey to find a new publisher for an orthodontic specialty journal. In 1915, the International Journal of Orthodontia was created with Dewey as editor. After some years, its name was changed to the American Journal of Orthodontics, which later became the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, or AJO-DO. Recherche sur la vraye anathomie des dents, nature & propriété d'icelles (1582) is the last dental book of the 16th century and the first in France. The part borrowed from Libellus de dentibus by Bartolommeo Eustachio is not the most interesting part of the book; the better part is when Hémard tells personal experiences with his picturesque words, showing violent situations of care at this epoch.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, empiries were travelling in Europe, coming, in majority from actual Italy. To attract the crowds, they put up boards on the street and play some pantomimes, parades or improvised scenes. In the 17th century this street show, little or none at all printed, was in a normal way in the day life. In the 18th century this street show is still alive and whole families as the Brioché, the Contugi, the Toscano, the Ricci, the Borsari have transmitted the art of the stage and the empiric practice. A few individuals of these families moved from empirics to be graduate dentists. In other families of dentists as the Talma or Fauchard it is the stage which brought some.

The author illustrates by the study of ancient texts the interest shown for equine dentistry since the age of times. The first detailed studies on the technique go back to the 17th century. The 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries were fertile in instrumental as well as technical discoveries; it was the time of creativity, and he quotes authors like Günther father and son, Frick, Goubaux and Barrier, Mérllat, Cadiot, and Colyer with his enormous work on animal dentistry published in 1936. During and right after the 2nd World War, it is the time of desertion, with only one exception, Erwin Becker, who out of Berlin gives an extraordinary prestige to the dentistry. The beginning of the revival seems to go back to 1975-1980. At this point of time, non veterinarian "dentists" breach in, the moust famous being Dale Jeffrey, who opens a school, creates an academy and publishes a newspaper. The author reviews all the existing teaching method. A new professions is born, the dental technician, one hurdle remains how to integrate it within the world of the veterinarians? The author presents the British example, the best regulated. He also shows how the French National Veterinary Schools have restored the teaching of dentistry. The author regrets that the Medias glorify the dental technicians under the pompous and improper trade name "equine dentists", to the detriment of the veterinarians.

This is an exploration of the great diversity to be found among those offering treatment of the teeth and determines what impact, if any, the change of regime had upon the practice of dentistry. The study is not restricted to the 'expert dentists' (already much studied by traditional histories of dentistry in France) but attempts to describe dental practice as it really was. In an attempt to paint as broad a picture as possible, it draws on material from such diverse communities as Lyons, Rennes, Sens, Dijon,Toulouse, Aix en Provence and Nancy. A description of the sources used is to be found in Appendix 1.

An attempt is made here to answer the question 'What is a dentist?'. Is he (or she) a successful pillar of society, wealthy and respected, or a lying charlatan, claiming all sorts of unbelievable cures and treatments. Were they specialists or was dentistry a sideline for some other trade or profession? This chapter discusses the evidence from France.

This chapter serves as a reminder of the political and social conditions in France over a period that embraces the Ancient Regime, the Revolution and the post-Revolutionary years. Contemporary legislation relating to the practice of medicine and dentistry in particular is outlined.

The influence of the Huguenots upon the practice of dentistry in England has received so little attention that their contribution has been largely overlooked, even though the competence of one particular family, the Hemets, led to royal appointments for three successive generations. This paper seeks to begin to redress the balance by chronicling some of the activities of this family.
