Summary: Guidelines for managers of protected areas are an important component of conservation policies, on a par with large-scale frameworks and vehicles for conservation funding. In line with the recent literature proposing evaluations of conservation actions or political strategies to improve them, here we use an innovative, hybrid methodology, based both on an interpretative approach anchored in social sciences and a quantitative literature review, to identify available frameworks for evaluating conservation guidelines. The main result of this analysis is that the relevant literature in conservation is sparse and heterogeneous, but a relevant encompassing framework is provided by the literature in decision sciences based on the policy analytics framework. This evaluation framework consists of three criteria: scientific credibility, operationality and legitimacy. We then implement a pilot application by evaluating guidelines currently used in France to support all of the actors involved in protected areas management. The French Upper Rhine alluvial plain is characterized by a complex system of paleochannels inherited from Late Glacial to Holocene fluvial dynamics of the Rhine and Ill river systems, among other smaller rivers. These paleochannels represent valuable archives for understanding and reconstructing the fluvial and landscape evolution of the area. However, the Holocene temporal trajectories of the paleochannels, in response to a range of environmental changes, remain poorly understood. This study presents a detailed and systematic mapping and characterization of an extensive network of paleochannels spanning the entire width (19 km) of a reach of the central French Rhine plain. Based on qualitative and quantitative lidar analysis, field investigations, and provenance investigations of paleochannel infill sequences, five distinct paleochannel groups (PG 1 to PG 5) were identified in the study area. These paleochannel groups differ considerably regarding their channel patterns, morphological characteristics, and sedimentary sources of the infilling sediments. The interpretation of the different datasets indicates that the development of these different paleomorphologies is attributed to significant changes in hydro-geomorphodynamic processes in the area during the Holocene, especially lateral migrations of the Rhine and Ill rivers. The findings reported here are promising and will have significant implications for reconstructing the long-term (Late Glacial to Holocene) evolution of the Upper Rhine fluvial hydrosystem in response to various controlling factors. Diese Fließrinnen stellen wertvolle Archive dar, die für das Verständnis und die Rekonstruktion der fluvialen und landschaftlichen Entwicklung des Gebietes von zentraler Bedeutung sind. Die zeitliche Entwicklung der Fließrinnen im Holozän, als Reaktion auf die Veränderung einer Reihe von Umweltbedingungen, ist jedoch nach wie vor nur unzureichend bekannt. In Europe, large rivers have been greatly impacted by engineering and hydraulic works. The Upper Rhine channelization has notably led to a disconnection between the main channel and its floodplain and side channels. Between 1998 and 2006, unprecedented restoration projects led to the reconnection of nine Rhine side channels to the main channel or the Rhine Drainage Canal. The structures of recolonizing macroinvertebrate communities observed in the restored side channels, either in 2009 or 2010, were compared to the ones of three reference side channels. The aims of the study were (i) to analyze the recolonizing macroinvertebrate communities and (ii) to identify the drivers of the community structure. The restored side channels exhibited macroinvertebrate community structures similar to those of the reference side channels. These communities were characterized by a high abundance of nonnative and invasive taxa and a structure not linked to either the time since restoration or the water and sediment chemistry. Significant correlations existed between the macroinvertebrate community structures and the mosaics of habitats, driven by the variations in side channel morphometry and discharge. Therefore, the diversity of habitat characteristics of the side channels might help conserve and increase macroinvertebrate biodiversity at the floodplain scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Hepatitis E is the most common cause of acute viral hepatitis worldwide. Seroprevalence is approximately 15% in developed countries, and 22% in France. hepatitis E virus (HEV) can be transmitted via transfusions and therefore possibly intravenous (IV) drug use. Hepatitis E serology is routinely tested in patients who seek medical advice for addictive injection behavior at the addiction treatment, support and prevention unit of Toulouse University Hospital. We assume that hepatitis E is more prevalent in patients presenting with addictive injection behavior than in the general French population. Methods: Hepatitis E serological assays [immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG] were carried out for all patients presenting with addictive injection behavior during an initial evaluation. The controls were taken from a cohort of 3,353 blood donors living in southern France and who donated blood during the first 2 weeks of October 2011. Results: We included 52 patients presenting with addictive injection behavior and 103 healthy controls matched for age, sex, and area of residence. We found no difference between patients and controls for the prevalence of hepatitis E: patients vs. healthy controls: positive IgGs: 42.31%, 95% confidence interval (CI) (28.73–56.80%) vs. 43.43%, 95% CI (33.50–53.77%) (p = 0.89) and positive IgMs: 3.85%, 95% CI (0.47–13.22%) vs. 4.85%, 95% CI (0.16–10.97%) (p = 0.57). Conclusion: There was no difference in HEV seroprevalence between IV drug users and the general population, suggesting that the IV route of HEV infection is not significant in this population. Introduction: The Medical-Psychological Emergency Cells (CUMP) are integrated in France into the pre-hospital Medical Emergency Services (SAMU). The objective of this study aims to show an integrated course of care and the major interest of the inclusion of the Psychological Cells in the structures of the SAMU. Method: The CUMP of the Toulouse Area is made up of Psychologists, Nurses, Psychiatrists, professionals or volunteers sent or put on alert. Interventions take place immediately under the aegis of the prehospital medical care department or in a deferred manner within the first 48 hours. All subjects having at the time signs of acute stress, peritraumatic dissociation, behavioral disorders, are invited to follow-up consultations within 48 to 72 hours. The objective of this work is to show the continuity of care and the pathway of patients coordinated from an emergency call to several months beyond. Results: During 2021, 222 situations were handled, either individually or collectively. 94 were assaults (physical, psychological, or sexual), 55 were accidents (traffic accident, fire, explosion, etc.), 50 were confrontations with death (attending a suicide, death, etc.), 13 were traumatic bereavements, and 10 a context of a health disaster. Overall, 1,109 patients were seen immediately on site, 192 post-immediate in less than 48 hours and 197 had repeated individual consultations. Conclusion: 1) The participation of the same professionals in immediate and post-immediate care makes the prevention of chronic post-traumatic stress more effective. 2) The articulation with the care structures for lasting psycho-trauma establishes consistency in the course of care: sensitivity to signs of distress, dissociation or stupefaction. 3) The links with the pre-hospital emergency medical aid service make emergency specialists aware of the psychological component of traumatic events. Body piercing, which is prevalent in young adults, has been suggested to be associated with features usually related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) such as high-risk behaviours and psychopathological symptoms and might be motivated by a wish to deal with prior traumatic experiences. However, to date, no research has investigated the relationship between this practice and PTSD symptoms. The present research aims to investigate the possible relationship between body piercing and PTSD symptoms in French-speaking young adults. According to our results, having two or more body piercings was associated with a twofold increased risk for scoring above the cut-off score for PTSD on the PTSD checklist. Our findings suggest that two or more body piercings might serve as an identifiable marker for PTSD symptoms and may have important implications for clinical screening. Purpose: To quantify the importance of drug-drug interactions (DDIs) in the occurrence of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) reported with serotoninergic reuptake inhibitors in a pharmacovigilance database. Methods: All spontaneous reports of ADRs registered in 2008 by the Midi-Pyrénées PharmacoVigilance Centre that contained mention of one of the serotoninergic reuptake inhibitor (SRI) antidepressants marketed in France were reviewed. DDIs were identified according to the French National Drug Formulary (Vidal) and the interaction supplement of the French independent drug bulletin La Revue Prescrire. ADRs explained by DDIs were characterised. Results: Among the 2,101 spontaneous reports recorded, 177 involved at least one SRI antidepressant. Among the 156 ADRs with at least one theoretical DDI, 41% (95% confidence interval 34-49%) could be explained by a DDI. The most frequent antidepressant involved in DDIs was escitalopram, followed by fluoxetine and citalopram. Among the 65 ADRs related to DDIs, 37 (52.9%) were 'serious', mainly bleedings, confusion and falls, hyponatremia and serotoninergic syndromes. The most frequent drug interactions occurred with psychotropics (antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, among others), followed by antithrombotic agents (antagonists of vitamin K, antiplatelets), diuretics and angiotensin II antagonists. The group with ADRs related to DDIs was older than the group with ADRs not related to DDIs. ADRs were threefold more 'serious' in the case of DDIs. Conclusion: Around 40% of ADRs reported with SRIs were related to DDIs. Most of these occurred after association with psychotropics, antithrombotics, or diuretics, especially in the elderly. Aim: Our aim was to identify prescribed drugs associated with violent behaviours using the French PharmacoVigilance Database (FPVD). Methods: All reports of adverse drug reactions (ADR) recorded in the FPVD between 1January 1985 and 31July 2008 and including the terms aggressiveness or violence were selected. We compared proportion of exposure to different drugs between cases (reports with violence) and noncases (other reports in the database). Results: Among 537 cases, 56 were included (48 men, mean age 46 years). Misuse was observed in ten cases (18%). In 25 cases (44.6%), a previous psychiatric history was documented. Main drugs involved were nervous system (63.6%) followed by respiratory (7.8%), alimentary tract and metabolism (7.8%), dermatological (5.2%) and anti-infective (5.2%) agents. Case/noncase analysis found an association with dopaminergic agonists (pergolide, pramipexole, bromocriptine, piribedil), benzodiazepines (alprazolam, bromazepam) and serotoninergic antidepressants (taken as a whole), but not antipsychotics or antiepileptics. Association was also found with varenicline, isotretinoin, interferon alpha-2b, rimonabant, benfluorex, topiramate and antiviral drugs (ribavirin, efavirenz). Conclusion: Dopaminergic agonists, benzodiazepines and serotoninergic antidepressants are the main pharmacological classes able to induce aggressive behaviour. Patients and methods: In order to investigate the effects of exposure to buprenorphine compared with methadone during pregnancy, a prospective multicenter study was conducted in collaboration with maternity hospitals, maintenance therapy centers, and general practitioners involved in addiction care. Ninety pregnant women exposed to buprenorphine and 45 to metadone were selected for the study. Results: During pregnancy, some women were exposed to illicit agents: cannabis (42% in the buprenorphine group vs. 58% in the methadone-treated group), heroin (17% vs. 44%), or cocaine (3% vs. 11%). Pregnancies ended in 85 vs. 40 live births, one vs. two stillbirths, two vs. one spontaneous abortion, two vs. one voluntary termination, and one vs. one medical termination in the buprenorphine and the methadone groups, respectively. Newborns had a birth weight of 2,892 ± 506 g (buprenorphine) vs. 2,731 ± 634 g (methadone) and a body length of 47.6 ± 2.5 cm vs. 47.1 ± 3 cm. 18.8% vs. 10% of newborns were delivered before 37 weeks of amenorrhea. Neonatal withdrawal syndrome occurred more frequently in the methadone group (62.5% vs. 41.2, p = 0.03). After adjustment for heroin exposure in late pregnancy, rates of neonatal withdrawal were no longer different between the methadone and buprenorphine groups. Twenty-one babies (84%) in the methadone group and 20 (57%) in the buprenorphine group ( p = 0.03) required opiate treatment. Conclusions: We did not observe more frequent malformations or cases of withdrawal syndrome in the buprenorphine group than in the methadone-treated group. Buprenorphine appears to be as safe as the currently approved substitute methadone considered to date as the reference treatment for pregnant opioid-dependent women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on the study conducted on French Upper Rhine basin in France. The research is aimed at establishing a quantitative functional hydrogeomorphological typology of the river to meet the requirements set by the European Water Framework Directive in restoring the river. Scientists studied four ecoregions which were delineated by expert opinion and validated by independent variables including 1-5 peak discharge, comparison of 10-year daily flow and low flow, valley bottom morphology and specific stream power. They have also analyzed a data set of 31 quantitative and qualitative variables for 187 field sites. Also discussed are the details of the experiment.

Over the last two centuries, rivers have been strongly regulated, inducing notable sediment starvation and flow reduction. This regulation has altered aquatic habitats, biocenosis and ecosystem services. Gravel augmentation (GA) is increasingly promoted to restore bedload transport, rejuvenate bed sediments and diversify aquatic and riverine habitats. However, practical questions remain in terms of efficiency and sustainability. The objective of this study is to provide unprecedented feedback from three GA experiments conducted along the Rhine River downstream of the Kembs dam (France/Germany). The restored sites were monitored over periods of 1 to 7 years and the stockpile deposits (SDs) and channel responses were compared to highlight the strengths and limitations of such experiments. The monitoring was based on topo-bathymetry, bedload tracking and grain size surveys. Two-dimensional hydraulic modelling was also performed to link the SD erosion patterns to the critical flow conditions. We show that (i) SD erosion is dependent on the grain size of the introduced sediments and the local flow velocities, (ii) sediment dispersion occurred mostly along the thalweg and increased over time, with a progressive decrease in the virtual velocities, (iii) bathymetric simplification and bed grain size fining were observed when downstream sediment diffusion began, (iv) in the mid-term (~5 years), local channel diversification occurred due to the fragmentation of sediment waves, with deposition occurring preferentially on riffles, and (v) new sediment starvation conditions appeared when the sediment waves travelled downstream in the absence of an upstream sediment supply. These results allow us to propose operational recommendations and management scenarios to improve both the efficiency and the sustainability of GAs conducted in large regulated rivers. • The erosion of stockpile deposits (SDs) is highly dependent on local hydraulic conditions and sediment grain size. • The effects of GAs are transitory due to the downstream transfer of the sediment wave in the absence of an upstream sediment supply. • High channel morphological diversity downstream of gravel augmentations (GAs) increases their positive effects in terms of habitat improvement, especially for grain size fining. • Feedback from the 3 experiments allows us to formulate operational guidelines and management scenarios that foster the efficiency and sustainability of GA operations. River regulations ultimately degrade fluvial forms and morphodynamics and simplify riparian and aquatic habitats. For several decades, river restoration actions have been performed to recover geomorphic processes and diversify these habitats to enhance both river biodiversity and ecosystem services. The objective of this study is to provide quantitative feedback on the experimental restoration of a large regulated and by-passed river (the Upper Rhine downstream of the Kembs Dam, France/Germany). This restoration consisted of the construction of two transverse groynes and the removal of bank protection. A monitoring framework composed of topo-bathymetric surveys as well as flow velocity and grain size measurements was established to assess the channel morphodynamic responses and evaluate their effects on habitat suitability for five native fish species using habitat models. A riverscape approach was used to evaluate the landscape changes in terms of both the configuration and the composition, which cannot be considered with classic approaches (e.g., Weighted Usable Area). Our results show that the two transverse groynes and, to a lesser extent, bank erosion, which was locally enhanced by the two groynes, increased habitat diversity due to the creation of new macroforms (e.g., pools and mid-bars) and fining of the bed grain size. Using a riverscape approach, our findings highlight that the restoration improved eel and juvenile nase species due to slowing down of the current and the deposition of fine sediments downstream of both groynes. As a consequence, the restoration improved the habitat suitability of the studied reach for more fish species compared with the pre-restoration conditions. This study also demonstrates that the salmon habitats downstream of the restored reach were improved due to fining of the bed grain size. This finding highlights that, for restorations aimed at fish habitats, the grain size conditions must be taken into consideration along with the flow conditions. Furthermore, the implementation of groynes, while not a panacea in terms of functional restoration, can be a strategy for improving fish habitats on highly regulated rivers, but only when more functional and natural options are impossible due to major constraints. Objective: To compare the relation between peritraumatic dissociation and acute stress and the early development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in victims of general crime.Method: A total of 48 subjects were assessed within 24 hours of the trauma, using the Peritraumatic Dissociative Experiences Questionnaire Self-Report Version (PDEQ-SRV). They were followed longitudinally to assess acute stress (2 weeks after the assault,) using the Standford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire (SASRQ), and posttraumatic stress (at 5 weeks), using the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) and the Impact of Event Scale (IES).Results: Among PTSD subjects mean PDEQ scores were significantly higher (mean 3, SD 0.9) than in those without PTSD (mean 2.3, SD 0.7) (t = 2.78, df 46, P = 0.007). Among PTSD subjects, mean SASRQ scores were significantly higher (mean 97.9, SD 29.2) than in those without PTSD (mean 54.8, SD 28.2) (t = 4.9, df 46, P = 0.00007).Conclusions: High levels of peritraumatic dissociation and acute stress following violent assault are risk factors for early PTSD. The aim was to evaluate the reliability of a newly-developed ball machine named 'Hightof', on the field and to assess its accuracy. The experiment was conducted in the collaboration of the 'Hawk-Eye' technology. The accuracy and reliability of this ball machine were assessed during an incremental test, with 1 min of exercise and 30 sec of recovery, where the frequency of the balls increased from 10 to 30 balls-min"1. The initial frequency was 10 and increased by 2 until 22, then by 1 until 30 balls ⋅min-1. The reference points for the impact were 8.39m from the net and 2.70m from lateral line for the right side and 2.83m for the left side. The precision of the machine was similar on the right and left sides (0.63 ± 0.39 vs 0.63 ± 0.34 m). The distances to the reference point were 0.52 ± 0.42, 0.26 ± 0.19, 0.52 ± 0.37, 0.28 ± 0.19 m for the Y-right, X-right, Y-left and X-left impacts. The precision was constant and did not increase with the intensity. (e.g ball frequency). The ball velocity was 86.3 ± 1.5 and 86.5 ± 1.3 km⋅h-1 for the right and the left side, respectively. The coefficient of variation for the velocity ranged between 1 and 2% in all stages (ball velocity ranging from 10 to 30 balls⋅min-1). • The Vosges Massif: a formerly half-glaciated massif. • 10Be- and 26Al-based catchment-wide denudation rates at the massif scale. • 40% of the studied catchments (9/22) are in cosmogenic disequilibrium. • Glacial deposits and former glacial cover correlates with 26Al/10Be ratios. • Sediments sampled in non-steady catchments might have survived several glacial cycles. Although catchment-wide denudation rates inferred from in situ cosmogenic nuclide concentrations measured in stream sediments has represented a ground-breaking progress in geomorphology over the last three decades, most of these studies rely on 10Be concentrations only. It seems that this current and routine one-nuclide approach to infer catchment-wide denudation rates has somehow overshadowed two key assumptions that are cosmogenic steady-state and short sediment transit time at the catchment scale. Although a paired-nuclide approach allow testing these assumptions, it is rarely performed on stream sediments and this can become highly problematic in slow-eroding, formerly glaciated contexts. In this study, we thus measure both 10Be and 26Al in stream sediments pertaining to twenty-one rivers draining an entire low mountain range: the Vosges Massif (NE France). The latter exhibits a sharp gradient between its southern and northern part in terms of lithology, morphometry and climate. Moreover, if its northern part remained void of glacial cover during Quaternary cold stages, its southern part was significantly and repeatedly glaciated. We aim to assess the factors that control the denudation of the Vosges Mountains and to quantitatively explore the impact of both repeated glacial cover and storage of glacially derived sediments on 26Al/10Be ratios, hence cosmogenic (un-)steadiness in modern river samples. Our results first show that elevation, slope, channel steepness and precipitation are primarily organised along a N-S increasing trend. 10Be- and 26Al-derived catchment-wide denudation rates accordingly range from 34 ± 1 to 66 ± 2, and 41 ± 3 to 73 ± 7 mm/ka, respectively, in thirteen investigated catchments that are in cosmogenic equilibrium. Lithological contrasts may control the pattern of denudation with a higher erodibility of the sandstone-dominated catchment to the north compared to the crystalline-dominated catchments to the south. Our results also show that catchments in strong cosmogenic disequilibrium (26Al/10Be ratios from 1.4 to 5.2) spatially cluster in the SW part of the Vosges Mountains that was the most intensively glaciated during Quaternary cold stages. If this precludes any conclusion about controlling factors at the whole massif scale, this study is the first to quantify the impact of past glaciations on cosmogenic (un-)steadiness measured in stream sediments. A statistically significant relationship between the degree of depletion of the 26Al/10Be ratios and the spatial pattern of glaciation is found: the larger the former glacial cover in each catchment, the lower the 26Al/10Be ratio. Equally important is the significant correlation reported between the degree of depletion of the 26Al/10Be ratios and the proportion of glacial and fluvio-glacial deposits within each catchment. These two relationships underline the link between cosmogenic unsteadiness in the stream cosmogenic signal and long-lasting and repetitive ice shielding, and complex sediment routing systems in glacial environments, respectively. We thus argue to systematically measure 26Al in complement to 10Be and to test the steady-state assumption when it comes to infer catchment-wide denudation rates from modern stream sediments, especially in slow eroding, formerly glaciated landscapes. Introduction: Strict lockdown rules were imposed to the French population from 17 March to 11 May 2020, which may result in limited possibilities of physical activity, modified psychological and health states. This report is focused on HRV parameters kinetics before, during and after this lockdown period., Methods: 95 participants were included in this study (27 women, 68 men, 37 ± 11 years, 176 ± 8 cm, 71 ± 12 kg), who underwent regular orthostatic tests (a 5-minute supine followed by a 5-minute standing recording of heart rate (HR)) on a regular basis before (BSL), during (CFN) and after (RCV) the lockdown. HR, power in low- and high-frequency bands (LF, HF, respectively) and root mean square of the successive differences (RMSSD) were computed for each orthostatic test, and for each position. Subjective well-being was assessed on a 0-10 visual analogic scale (VAS). The participants were split in two groups, those who reported an improved well-being (WB+, increase >2 in VAS score) and those who did not (WB-) during CFN., Results: Out of the 95 participants, 19 were classified WB+ and 76 WB-. There was an increase in HR and a decrease in RMSSD when measured supine in CFN and RCV, compared to BSL in WB-, whilst opposite results were found in WB+ (i.e. decrease in HR and increase in RMSSD in CFN and RCV; increase in LF and HF in RCV). When pooling data of the three phases, there were significant correlations between VAS and HR, RMSSD, HF, respectively, in the supine position; the higher the VAS score (i.e., subjective well-being), the higher the RMSSD and HF and the lower the HR. In standing position, HRV parameters were not modified during CFN but RMSSD was correlated to VAS., Conclusion: Our results suggest that the strict COVID-19 lockdown likely had opposite effects on French population as 20% of participants improved parasympathetic activation (RMSSD, HF) and rated positively this period, whilst 80% showed altered responses and deteriorated well-being. The changes in HRV parameters during and after the lockdown period were in line with subjective well-being responses. The observed recordings may reflect a large variety of responses (anxiety, anticipatory stress, change on physical activity…) beyond the scope of the present study. Background: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components in a cohort of French patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and to determine correlations with sociodemographic, clinical, and treatment-related factors., Methods: From 2012 to 2018, 205 patients who met DSM-IV criteria for major depressive episode with moderate-to-severe symptoms (Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale score ≥ 20), and at least Stage II resistance according to Thase and Rush criteria were enrolled in the FondaMental Advanced Centers of Expertise in Resistant Depression (FACE-DR) cohort. Data on sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, lifestyle information, and treatment and comorbidities were collected, and a blood sample was drawn. MetS was defined according to the criteria of the International Diabetes Federation., Results: Overall, 38% of individuals with TRD met criteria for MetS. The frequency of MetS was significantly higher in men than in women only for patients aged 40 years or older (46.3% vs 35.2%, P = .0427). Moreover, whereas the management for diabetes was good, less than one-third of the patients with high blood pressure or dyslipidemia were treated for these conditions. Multivariate analysis showed that individuals with abnormal plasma c-reactive protein levels had a 3-fold increased risk (95% CI, 1.5-5.2) of having MetS, independent of other potential confounders., Conclusion: The prevalence of MetS is higher in patients with TRD than in those with other psychiatric disorders and characterized by a considerable undertreatment of some components of MetS in this population. Diagnosis and treatment of the components of MetS should be systematically performed to prevent the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases in patients with TRD. Background: Previous studies have identified factors associated with admission to hospital after suicide spectrum behaviors. In this study, we aim to identify specific factors associated with psychiatric hospitalization after self-poisoning. Given earlier findings suggesting that alcohol use disorder is not associated with hospital admission, we also aim to consider its impact, as well as blood alcohol concentrations, on hospitalization decisions after a suicide attempt., Methods: We studied the association between demographic features, suicide intent, psychiatric characteristics and admission to hospital in self-poisoning patients in an emergency department in France., Results: Suicide intent, a past history of suicide attempts, bipolar disorder and depression were associated with psychiatric hospital admissions. Despite alcohol use disorder being known to be associated with a suicide risk, it was not linked with psychiatric hospitalization. A positive blood alcohol concentration in the emergency department likewise had no association with admission to a psychiatric ward for inpatient care., Conclusions: Our findings were similar to those reported for other suicide spectrum behaviors. Alcohol use disorder was not associated with admission for inpatient psychiatric care, whereas depression clearly was. The cause of this discrepancy must be determined in future research.

In urbanized areas, small streams can be greatly damaged by urban inflows and combined sewer overflows. These polluted inputs can be several times higher than the natural stream flow over short time periods. Sound knowledge of the spatial distribution of the discharged pollutants in sediments is therefore crucial for designing monitoring strategies and suitable remediation operations. This field study combines geomorphic characterization, hydraulic conductivity measurement and pollutant assays in sediments of a small suburban river. The study site was divided up into geomorphic units: riffles, pools and runs. The last two were grouped into one class named "pool-runs" owing to their closely similar open channel flow hydraulics. Benthic and hyporheic sediments were sampled at 2m intervals. Conventional particulate pollutants (Cr, Pb, N(org), P(tot) & C(org)) were assayed in samples. The main result was: pollutants were not randomly distributed in the stream sediments, but their location showed clear concentration differences by geomorphic units, with preferential accumulation in the hyporheic zones of riffle units and a lesser one in the hyporheic zones of pools. A decrease in hydraulic conductivity was significantly correlated with an increase in pollutant concentration. This occurred mainly at the transition between riffles and pool units. The down-welling water fluxes in the sediment calculated using Darcy's formula reflect this slowdown. Our findings highlight the need to take into account the geomorphological and hydrological functioning of a stream to accurately locate the biogeochemical hotspots to be treated and thereby develop more relevant monitoring and remediation methodologies., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. The present study examined individual latent changes in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms over a 60-month period after an industrial disaster. Participants were recruited from survivors of a factory explosion. Participants were assessed retrospectively for peritraumatic reactions and acute stress symptoms. Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms were then assessed at 6, 15, and 60 months. Using structural equation modeling, the authors tested 3 hypotheses of individual latent change: stability of PTSD symptoms between 6, 15, and 60 months; change between 6 and 15 months; and change between 15 and 60 months. Only one model provided a good fit suggesting that PTSD symptoms evolved between 6 and 15 months after trauma exposure and remained stable at the individual level thereafter., (Copyright © 2010 International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.)

Objective: Doping Preventing Medical Centres (Antennes Médicales de Prévention du Dopage) were established in France in 2000 in order to help sportsmen using illegal substances. These services are also information centres on illegal substances (drugs or others) used in sport. The aim of the study was to analyze the characteristics of sportsmen outpatient clinics in Antenne Médicale de Prevention du Dopage Midi-Pyrénées (AMPD-MP)., Methods: We present the results of outpatient clinics in AMPD-MP from 2002 to 2008. A descriptive analysis of demographic data, substances used and sports practised were performed., Results: During this 7 year-period, 35 outpatient clinics were performed [32 men, 3 women, mean age: 28 years (extreme values: 18-47; 10 patients ≥ 30 years)]. They were mainly involved in national (16), international (8) or regional (7) competitions. The main sports involved were rugby (9) followed by cycling (5), athletics (3) and body-building (3). The most frequently used illegal substances were cannabis (15) followed by glucocorticoïds (9), androgens (4), indirect sympathomimetics amphetaminics (4), beta 2 adrenergic agonists (2) and NSAIDs (2). Two veterinary substances (clenbuterol, boldone-veterinaire) were also found in body-builders., Conclusion: This study shows a clear under use of Doping Preventing Medical Centres by sportsmen and practitioners. It also indicates a relative high age for sportsmen referred to the centre. The main sports involved were rugby and cycling. Cannabis and glucocorticoïds were the drugs more often involved in doping behaviours.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the power of self-reported peritraumatic distress and dissociation to predict the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in school-aged children., Methods: School-aged children aged 8 to 15 years admitted to an emergency department after a road traffic accident were enrolled (n=103). Participants were assessed with the child versions of the Peritraumatic Distress Inventory and the Peritraumatic Dissociative Experiences Questionnaire within 1 week. Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms were then assessed at 5 weeks., Results: A significant association between peritraumatic variables and two measures of PTSD symptoms was demonstrated. However, in a multivariate analysis, peritraumatic distress was the only significant predictor of acute PTSD symptoms (beta=.33, p<.05)., Conclusions: As has been found in adults, peritraumatic distress is a robust predictor of who will develop PTSD symptoms among school-aged children., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Inc. This study compared, 18-24 months after an industrial disaster, in two groups of children (those with clinically relevant PTSD symptoms versus those with low PTSD symptoms), the child's perception of family cohesion and adaptability, the child's experience of the explosion, and parental characteristics. Enmeshed family cohesion or rigid family adaptability were more frequently found in children with low PTSD symptoms. PTSD symptoms in the mother, living in a family of 3 or more children, and being female were significantly associated with PTSD symptoms in the children. The assessment of traumatized children should include assessment of family's adaptability and cohesion.

This paper reviews recent data on the pharmacovigilance of antiparkinsonian drugs and drugs inducing parkinsonian syndroms. Sudden sleep attacks were first described in 1999 with dopamine agonists. In fact, they can be induced by all the dopaminergic antiparkinsonian drugs. Favorising factors are duration of the disease, dose of dopaminergic drugs, daytime somnolence or dysautonomia. This adverse drug reaction can be serious leading, for example, to road accidents. Cardiac valvulopathies were more recently (end of 2002) described with pergolide. Thus, this dopamine agonist should now be prescribed as a last choice among dopamine agonists. Dopamine drugs (levodopa as well as dopamine agonists) can induce hypersexual behaviours or pathological gambling. Among the long list of drugs inducing parkinsonian syndroms, recent data suggest the involvement of serotoninergic antidepressants, valproic acid and trimetazidine. Finally, these data on pharmacovigilance allow to precise the physiological role of dopamine: beside its motor and psychic effects, dopamine is also involved in the sleep-arousal control. It is also an important mediator for pleasure, hedonic regulations and sexual behaviour. This review also underlines the major role of spontaneous reports to the pharmacovigilance systems to identify new adverse drug reactions.

Objective: Peritraumatic dissociation is a risk factor for developing PTSD. The Peritraumatic Dissociative Experiences Questionnaire (PDEQ) is a self-report inventory used to assess dissociation that occurred at the time of a trauma. The aim of this study was the validation the PDEQ in French., Method: Ninety French speaking traumatized victims presenting to the emergency department were recruited. They were administered the PDEQ shortly after exposure and others trauma-related measures 2 weeks and 1 month posttrauma., Results: Principal components factor analyses suggested a single factor solution for the PDEQ. Significant correlations between the PDEQ and acute and posttraumatic stress symptoms indicated moderate to strong convergent validity. The PDEQ also showed satisfactory test-retest reliability and internal consistency., Conclusion: This study is the first one to investigate such detailed psychometric findings on the PDEQ. This confirms the unity of the concept of peritraumatic dissociation and the value of the PDEQ-French Version to assess it.
