Gregorio Peces-Barba's general theory of fundamental rights does not have a lot of resonance in France. This article try to explain it. A first reason is lie to the fact that his theoretical proposition is far to the concerns, on the one hand, of legal dogmatics, which essentially focuses its work on the technical study of law, and, on the other hand, of the few French legal theorists or philosophers. A second reason may be that the concept of "fundamental rights" constructed and defended by Peces-Barba is quite different from the one that has finally widespread in France and that, anyway, it is not object of a significant theorisation, nor of a unified understanding. The attention that Foucault devotes to Hellenistic philosophy and its excerpts within the stoicism presented throughout the course The Hermeneutics of the Subject between the years 1981 and 1982, given at the college de France, on the problem of the subject's constitution, raises a look specific towards the constitution of an ethos based on techniques from which the subject sees himself under the eyes of the other and attentive to his directions. This relationship established between master and disciple throughout ancient philosophy, from the Greeks to the Hellenists, being accentuated in stoicism, draws the attention of the French philosopher, who, in turn, delves into the texts and letters of several philosophers of the School of the Portico. In this work, specifically, I try to make a small cut of Foucault's look for some notes made about Epictetus, one of the great names of stoicism. It is a brief reflection because the proposed theme is undoubtedly vast and inexhaustible, both on the part of the French philosopher and on the part of the Stoic philosopher in question. In this line, I will seek, in addition to suggesting a reflection, to problematize with Foucault the issues related to the constitution of the self, from the epictetian perspective, trying to open the way to think the subject of the present day that is constituted by the same ways as the Greco-Roman subject, that is, from the other. But the question is: who would be this other and even more, how to know and how to recognize this other as a subject that is constituted from practices and techniques of oneself? Although Rachel Bespaloff published only two short studies of Kierkegaard's works (1934-1935), her work, some of the first critical analyses of his philosophy, had a profound impact on Kierkegaard's reception in France. Despite the fact that she published no studies of Kierkegaard's works after 1935, her essays and letters nevertheless attest to a continued interest in the Danish philosopher, in whom she seeks a new source for philosophy. This paper aims to expose two possible views about knowledge of essences in Thomas Aquinas. On the one hand there is the critique of knowledge of philosopher Jacques Maritain, who will question that man's access to the essences of things would be as simple as usually occurs. This situation leads us to what we call a gnoseology-cal stance. On the other hand, we try to show that there is probably another horizon of different reading supported by the French philosopher. The article discusses French philosopher, mathematician, and political scientist, Nicolas de Condorcet's theory about liberty and property. The author compares Condorcet's ideas with British philosopher John Locke's, and explains that, according to Condorcet, property protection is essential to a society, while Locke claims that liberties' defense is more important. It is noted that Condorcet was recognized as a human rights activist, however his theory about property considers men, as beings able to have material properties, before being citizens.

On the 27th of July, 1978, Foucault held a lecture to the French Philosophical Society in Paris with the title "Qu'est-ce que la Critique? [Critique et Aufklärung]", which deals mainly with Kant's article "Answer to the question: what is Aufklärung?" of 1784. What I intend to investigate is how Foucault's reading of the Aufklärung creates a new dimension in his reading of Kant and modernity, an ethical dimension that would bring him close to some concepts articulated by Kant's critique, allowing him to situate his work within modernity, and at the same time would lead him to a broader retrospective approach to his own research. Thus, the reflection on the Enlightenment, as defined by Kant, and on modernity's critical ethos would take Foucault toward his own research, raising a perspective where it would be possible to outline what could be his philosophical project, even though understood as an open, continuously reformulated task. The article analyzes the notion of using transdisciplinarity in historical research in France. French philosopher Michel Foucault is said to be responsible for the introduction of the true historiographical revolution by shifting the focus to the exercise of power and subjectivity. The author compares the integration of transdisciplinarity into history to the quest for historicity. She points out that historian Nicole Loraux used transdisciplinarity effectively.

This paper presents the state of research on Hobbes in France these last 7-8 years. First of all, it explains how the generation of forerunners in the 1970s and 1980s has been replaced by the birth of a vigorous French school of Hobbes scholars in the 1990s and then by a new generation of academics during the recent years. The first part of this paper deals with the institutions and the institutional life concerned with Hobbes in France (Centre Hobbes, Groupe Hobbes, conferences, etc.). The second part is devoted to eight recent monographs on the English philosopher. The third one is focused on various collections of papers as well as special issues. The fourth part reckons five recent translations into French of some of Hobbes's works (Elements of Law, Latin Leviathan, Vitae, De cive). I publish here two letters by the French philosopher and mathematician Renéé Descartes. An essay of Emmanuel Levinas, an Italian-born French philosopher and Talmudic commentator, is presented. He was born in Kovno, Lithuania in 1906 into a family of Russophiles. It states that at age 11, Levinas and his family moved to Ukraine and was admitted to the Russian lyceum in Kharkov. It cites that he went to France in 1923 to study philosophy at Strasbourg University then went to Freiburg University to pursue his doctoral studies.

This essay treats the inspiration and nature of Yves Simon's philosophical life. His embrace of that life was importantly shaped by his engagement with the republican tradition in France, his passionate opposition to the fascist threat to France, and his later attachment to the aspirations of American democracy. However, his early philosophical interests took direction and inspiration from his encounter with Jacques Maritain who drew him to Thomism. His devotion to the truth was fierce, and he confronted honestly the threats to this defining quality of philosophical life from the pressures of social conformity and from the discouragement of seeing the inadequacies and disagreements in the history of philosophy. He came, as especially evident in his most influential book, Philosophy of Democratic Government, to esteem highly the virtue of prudence, seeking to protect it from both philosophy and social science. The article reflects on the debates of contemporary philosophy on ontology. It states that Emmanuel Levinas is one of the philosophers who challenge ontology and was considered the spiritual father of "difference" philosophy in contemporary France. The year 2005, that of Sartre’s centennial, saw a wide range of reactions to the œuvre of the philosopher, especially since the almost unanimously negative articles that appeared in France contrasted with numerous positive reactions in the rest of the world. This article reviews some of the most extreme critiques against Sartre, and reveals the opinion of one of the leading intellectuals from the post-colonial era, Brazilian Culture Minister Gilberto Gil, a fierce pro-Sartrean figure. By addressing the interesting symptoms revealed by this Sartrean barometer, the article tries to decipher the divorce that appears between Sartre and French society. The article focuses on how philosophers in France negotiate with the excess in apprehension and determination in the context of the return of religion, and argues why the thought is determined by the history of the twentieth century. The works of philosophers Emmanuel Lévinas, Jean-François Lyotard and Jacques Derrida are examined.

The article relates that artisans, at least for a short period of time, were more than just helping hands for René Descartes, a philosopher. Experimental practices and artisans have become a hot topic of interest among scholars of early modern natural philosophy. Descartes had started to question the artisan's inherent structured order as soon as he landed in Paris, France, in the mid-1620s. When Descartes began to study optics in the company of real artisans, his opinion of them wavered, and he began to develop theories on the design of machines and instruments which artisans operated in their crafts.
